The hectic Christmas period continues now, as we pop out to the Weekly Shop, assessing the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our own weekly squads.

As always, the player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re once again scanning the players lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

Arsenal picked up an eighth clean sheet of the campaign in the 2-0 win over Bournemouth and look set for a ninth with a home clash against Newcastle up next. After Laurent Koscielny was rested against the Cherries, Arsene Wenger’s backline could see further rotation but Petr Cech (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.3m) should be a safe starter – the summer signing has made 39 saves in nine matches at home, an average of over four per game, and faces a side that’s failed to scored in their last two matches.

The goalless draw against Chelsea was Manchester United’s seventh shut-out in nine league matches at Old Trafford this season. While the Red Devils have been struggling up front, the backline has consistently delivered, with Louis van Gaal’s policy of building from the back ensuring that Fantasy managers can rely upon his defence. Chris Smalling (FantasyBet 6.5m, PremierPunt 9.2m) has been a considerable influence and welcomes a Swansea outfit that have blanked in six of their last nine outings.

Mesut Ozil (FantasyBet 9.5m, PremierPunt 12.8m) posted his biggest haul of the season against Bournemouth – a 14-point return was his sixth double-figure total in twelve appearances. It’s difficult to ignore the German for the visit of the Magpies and a double up with one of Aaron Ramsey (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 12.1m) or Theo Walcott (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 11.8m) is likely to be a popular tactic – over the last four Gameweeks both have made seven attempts and recorded a single goal apiece.

The goalless draw with Manchester City meant Jamie Vardy (FantasyBet 7.5m, PremierPunt 8.2m) has failed to score or assist in back-to-back appearances for the first time this term. A visit from a Bournemouth side that have conceded 21 goals on their travels – only Norwich and Sunderland have been worse – indicates a third blank is unlikely. The Foxes frontman recovered from illness to play the full match against City and he’ll be desperate to get back amongst the goals as the King Power outfit step up their title tilt.

Poundstretchers

Leicester City may not have scored in the last two but a clean sheet against Manchester City is always an achievement. It was a third shut-out in seven in for the Foxes, not a bad record for a team that generally throws caution to the wind and only picked up six in total last season. Kasper Schmeichel (FantasyBet 4.5m, PremierPunt 7.0m) picked up all three bonus points after keeping Sergio Aguero quiet with five saves – the Danish keeper has secured a save point in seven of nine matches at the King Power and could be in the points at home to Bournemouth this weekend.

Sunderland picked up three clean sheets in Sam Allardyce’s first five matches but have conceded in each of the subsequent five. Trips to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City were never likely to yield much, though, and the visit of basement-dwellers Aston Villa affords the Wearsiders a glimmer of hope. Even if Villa do score, Patrick Van Aanholt (FantasyBet 4.5m, PremierPunt 7.2m) offers a chance of attacking returns – the Dutchman has produced five attempts and seven key passes over the last four Gameweeks.

Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 8.6m) has now netted four goals in five appearances, with a penalty and assist in the 4-3 thriller with Everton confirming the Austrian as a compelling Fantasy pick. The Potters travel to the Hawthorns to face a West Brom side who uncharacteristically boast the second-worst home defensive record this season, with 16 goals against in front of their own fans. Having just scored four at Goodison, Mark Hughes’ side roll up to the weekend derby in fine fettle.

With Graziano Pelle set to miss Southampton’s trip to Norwich with a knee injury, we turn to Shane Long (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 6.6m) instead. The Republic of Ireland international has been an able replacement for the Italian, scoring three goals in his last four starts and firing 10 attempts from inside the box in his last four appearances. If you’re backing the Saints attack to do well against the promoted side, provides a budget differential requiring less funds than Dusan Tadic (FantasyBet 7m, PremierPunt 9.4m) or the misfiring Sadio Mane (FantasyBet 7.5m, PremierPunt 11.0m).

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into this week’s fixtures. I’ll bring you up to date on my progress in our partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt – in my articles next week, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

I agree it might skew them a bit but its not just goal attempts, they were top for shots in the box, crosses, chances created etc etc

You can't completely discount that. Anichebe played really well for them, but not sure if he will start again.

Also, out of those four defenders, Wolly has the least amount of attacking potential. The other 3 could be very well give you attacking returns.

I don't chase CS anymore, they are tough to predict.

While everyone seems to be going nuts about arnatauvic, is anyone else considering Sigurdsson (after next week) as a differential?

Doos midfield tables includes him doing well for shots on target

Comparison with arnie throws up an interesting result..

I guess the main issue is Swansea maybe lacking the team threat but this should improve with the fixtures?

Yeah, there is one. Maximum limit of 1000 limits. Just above the BPL Table and Logo on the right hand side of your screen.

Btw, just a general question, do you think WBA will get a cleanie out from the Stoke game? I saw the Stoke game against Everton and I think Arnautovic and Bojan were getting too much space behind the Everton defence, especially the full backs. Surely Pulis is going to be a tougher task?

            1. Diva
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 1 month ago

It seems to me that Pulis defences tend to struggle most against quick wingers. I'm not sure Shaqiri et al fit into that category or not. If they can turn WBA's "full backs" inside out then they could cause WBA problems I think.

The latest thinking I read was Curtis is looking likely to be that post for a while. If so I am interested because it is Curtis who has deployed Siggy in that way. If another manager comes in it's all up in the air again.

Very attacking, high press. Believes in youth and development.

Poche on steroids pretty much. Several narcissist qualities as well, but kinda like Mourinho, those 'faults' is what makes them so good especially with media. (hates the press and rich naive club owners alike)

I've personally witnessed him turn around a national team (Chile). Bielsa is the reason Chile and all its players are so globally recognized currently, not the current manager in Sampaoli. He did wonders at Marseille last season as well.

We also should be keeping our eye on Shaqiri, just in case this game propels him into a run of form. I'm very impressed with Stoke, those 3 (including Bojan) are linking up incredibly well. Bojan makes them tick though, they almost gave up the game after he went off.

As far as Siggy, incredible underlying stats last couple weeks, when he has played! Just doesn't have a defined role in that squad right now. He has been playing on the wing, as a #10, as a false #9, off the bench etc

Just too much uncertainty around Swansea right now to make them a reliable FPL asset. If Bielsa rumors are true and he ends up going there, then I'd be very very interested in Siggy as I'm positive Bielsa will get the best out of him.

Like with a lot of cases of picking the riser before it happens, I think it is best to wait for it to start happening (do you agree?). but def worth keeping on the radar.

Yep, agreed. Although, I'd argue he has shown us something being back in the old position and has just been unlucky not to have picked up points though?

With a couple of poor defensive teams upcoming, Sunderland and Everton, he seems primed as a differential choice?

I can ot afford any of the defenders at the top of Bonkers list escept the Palace ones and already have Ward. Life would be much easier without Danny Rose as could buy Davies for 4.1

Had a nightmare trying to even boot this site today, let alone post. Hope you're all having a decent time.

Could any of you give me any suggestions as to what to do with my team - do I have the right starting XI for starters and would you change anything?

    Butland

    Bellerin Smalling Dann

    Mahrez KDB Ozil Arnie

    Lukaku Vardy Ighalo

    (Ruddy Toby Alli Cresswell)

would love some feedback from the hardcore enthusiasts whilst everyone else is out drinking!

what would you guys recommend for my team?

    DDG
    Bellerin, Wollschied, Moreno
    Mahrez, Ozil, Ramsey, KDB
    Vardy, Kane, Lukaku
    Myhill, Alli, Nyom, Francis

2.8 in the bank, and 2 free transfers. what do you guys think?

That team looks really good. Not sure what I'd do, probably replace Francis with a player whose team defends better? WBA?

Ighalo was my Wilson upgrade way back now, and I thank God I did it. I've always kept at least £6m spare just in case Aguero starts firing but I definitely won't be bringing him in until he starts playing regularly again. Get Ighalo though!

Vardy > Iggy IMHO. I've got Vardy, Lukaku and Iggy and I'm considering on transferring Vardy if he blanks this week.

Good evening mate, you could possibly upgrade Francis to Dann, otherwise your defence is strong. Forward line also looks very decent, and my only other suggestion is perhaps looking at transferring Ramsey. While I am a fan of him and he is very popular on here - personally I tend to stray away from Rambo because he is deployed very deep in Arsenal's line up, normally in CDM.

I got Ramsey in when his position changed, seems to have changed back now.....who would you put in instead? I could trade him to someone cheap and put Alli on the pitch?

Obvious choice would be Arnie - unless you already have him? I've just brought him in as my 4th mid.

I have failed 5 captains in a row,

    GW 19 - Ramsey - 4 points
    GW 18 - Lukaku - 4 points
    GW 17 - Lukaku - 12 points
    GW 16 - Kane - 4 points
    GW 15 - Kane - 4 points

My reasonable weeks are being ruined by poor captaincy picks. each of these weeks I had 3-4 better picks which I didnt go for. I normally pick decent captains but recently seem to have lost my mojo. any tips?

I have Bellerin, Dawson , Moreno , Simpson & Sagna.

I'm playing Bellerin, Simpson and one other.

Dawson has similar attacking stats to Vardy these last two weeks. Despite Vardy regression it's still pretty impressive. Don't really go off stats myself but it's interesting nonetheless

Definitely agree with Bellerin, hopefully he doesn't get rested!

Concerned though about Toby vs high-octane Everton attack, and also have doubts over Dawson vs Stoke in recent good form... Plus I also brought in Arnautovic and don't really fancy him attacker vs defender in my lineup...

For the exact reason you just mentioned, I didn't bring arnautovic in. Plus I'm indifferent between him and Barkley so might as well save the FT
