The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To be honest, I'm stunned Milner didn't play. Since when did Big Dunc ever pick a differential that didn't even start? Anyway, here's my team, not sure what to do next week....any thoughts?

    Hennessey (Begovic)
    Warnock Simpson ShawX (tierney)(Naylor)
    Nani VDV Milner Hoolahan>who? (Bannan)
    Rooney RVP Sturridge

Was originally thinking Hoolahan>Cleverley....only 0.1 in the bank. Thanks in advance fellas 🙂

Toying with using my WC after a few very poor weeks. How does this look?

    Begovic Vorm
    Walker Wilkinson Enrique Simpson Monk
Ramsey Silva B. Johnson VDV Sinclair
    Aguero Adebayor RVP

Fairly crap defence I know but could downgrade Begovic and upgrade Monk possibly?

Also thinking I should wait I week as I currently have Given & Agbonlahor home to Norwich next week. But I really want to shift Woodgate, Moses, Kompany & Bosingwa and also Agbonlahor even if he does have Norwich at home

i thought sturridge today was absolutely shocking, 1 and half minutes into game, had the perfect oppurtunity to slide it into torres, easy as would of been a goal, then not much longer could of done the same thing, but way too slow and unaware that he could of done so, yes, i have torres, thats why im angry, but still, didn't think he would of played so poorly today. Fortunately blackburn lie ahead 🙂

May be true, but i'll always have faith in torres, and no better chance to prove himself than at blackburn nest week, shipped mata out for VDV this week, no doubting that before today mata was looking like a dodgy decision in terms of transfers, however i cant see him pulling it out every game like he kind of did today. Lampard is sensible enough, may even get him in instead of silva.

I am not surprised it wasn't given because Walcott did all the work. RVP just gave him a short pass 35-40 yards out. However, it will be reviewed. I think it will be given because it was not a case of Walcott losing possession and then winning it back. Won't know till after Monday's game I expect.

Understand the point, but 'keepers can get assists with a long boot, whereupon the scorer does 'all the work'

I think it'll be given, too. But if not, meh. He performed well beyond expectations - people should be happy with that.

If I recall correctly, I remember someone getting an assist for a Fabregas goal and all he did was start the ball forward to start the half! Still an assist. Just like Young's assist to Rooney on the free kicks.

Any kind of 'tap' still counts as an assist. The key point is therefore did any MC player touch the ball. Its not clear from the replay but if yes then no assist, if no the an assist will be given irrespective of how tenuous it was. As an RVP owner then yes it should be given!

U can only get 1 clean sheet a game, u can get more than 1 goal a game and no one is really keeping regular clean sheets. I'd rather have a shitter getting me 2 points a week than an expensive defender getting me that. Defenders are dead to me.

I think it's best to be flexible about how you weight the spending between def/mid/str - depends on varying form and value thru the season so it's not necessarily stupid to spend £30+ on strikers. My worry is that Roon is playing too deep though so I'd downgrade him.

    two unrelated questions:

    1) don't want to get rid of my only united cover but is rooney to rvp the right move to make?

and 2) 20 points behind my rival in head to head. he's got vdv and simpson left to play while i've got vdv (c), adebayor, walters, and woodgate left to play (with simpson coming off the bench if woodgate doesn't play). what are the odds of me beating him?

:Look at the price of the top scoring defenders at the moment and that should answer your question.

Clean sheets have been like rocking horse poo this year from what used to be nailed on defenses.

Man u shipping 6 at home and now chelski with 5 - what are the odds?

Big points and especially bonus points come from goals and assists ask yourself who scores and get assists and fit the rest around them...

I have 5 of those 6 and spread the rest around defense.

I also have Walters, Jones, Enrique, Raylor and Vorm who have been reasonable points scorers.

Moses I just can't bring myself to sell, De laet is driftwood and will get sorted later and ruddy for later gameweeks when they rotate better.

Interesting point raised on the Chelsea chat page.

Striker runs through fouled by defender but would still have had the keeper to beat, this a goalscoring opportunity so red card. See Bosingwa incident.

Striker runs through fouled by goalkeeper and one defender covering, yet this is not considered a goalscoring opportunity despite the fact the keeper is not even there and why Szczesny was not sent off.

I just cannot understand why the first incident is considered a better 'goalscoring opportunity' in the rule book than the second when quite obviously it is the other way round.

I did say in my post if you had bothered to read it properly that szczesny wasn't the last man, it is just that one on one vs a defender with keeper MIA is a better chance than one on one vs a goalkeeper. But seemingly the rulebook would not agree with that.

          Sending-off offences

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences:

          serious foul play
          violent conduct
spitting at an opponent or any other person
denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
receiving a second caution in the same match

A player, substitute or substituted player who has been sent off must leave the vicinity of the field of play and the technical area.

And, from the Interpretation of Law 12/Fouls & Misconduct:
Denying a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
There are two sending-off offences that deal with denying an opponent an
obvious opportunity to score a goal. It is not necessary for the offence to occur
          inside the penalty area.
If the referee applies advantage during an obvious goalscoring opportunity and
a goal is scored directly, despite the opponent’s handling the ball or fouling an
opponent, the player cannot be sent off but he may still be cautioned.
Referees should consider the following circumstances when deciding whether
to send off a player for denying a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity:
          • the distance between the offence and the goal
          • the likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
          • the direction of the play
          • the location and number of defenders
          • the offence which denies an opponent an obvious goalscoring opportunity
may be an offence that incurs a direct free kick or an indirect free kick

          ________________

Nothing here indicates a 'hard-and-fast' last-man standard ... but I've only checked for about 3 minutes. So, probably a subjectivity that you don't like - but not an objective contradiction.
