The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Get the violins out...

I gambled on Balotelli this week thinking his form and favour with Mancini plus just 10 minutes in Carling Cup made him a guaranteed starter ahead of Dzeko alongside Aguero. Needless to say, I was wrong, he was subbed on for 21 mins.

Shall I stick with him over the coming GWs? Or has the game changed, again?

If there is a pattern to who will start, only Mancini can see it. So hard to predict.

Maybe keep him for a week or two just to try to get something out of him (you can rationalize it by telling yourself you're attending to other transfers you need to make), but I don't think he's a very secure long-term option with other striker's doing the business.

Massive gamble. Always a rotation risk given Dzeko and Aguero's form/abilities.

The game will be the same with those boys for the foreseeable future. Both Dzeco and Balo. play better when they are kept on their toes. Aguero is the man and the others get some gravy here and there

Seemed to be be everywhere today, like a roaming striker. Saw him on the left exchanging passes with Silva, then on the right blocking the keepers clearance so Dzeko can score in a central position! Silva drifts a lot too between flanks. It's part of what makes him dangerous, he's not a nicely boxed CF - don't be too worried.

not sure, but if he does for another game or two, then Hernandez is gonna get scouted with a fine-toothed comb. Looking to ship Suarez soon, was thinking Aguero in, but if Hernandez is getting regular starts and getting service from rooney, he's well and truly on the radar

In my opinion he shouldn't have too. United have good CM's already, cleverly and anderson have been good and of course there is still Fletcher and Carrick. These guys aren't the most exciting United players but if SAF didn't have faith in them for this season he would have got Sneider in the transfer window

Is anderson good? I'm genuinely asking.

I'm in the States, and we don't get every game broadcast here, so I only get to see so much of each team. Anderson always seems slightly anonymous. And up until half way through the season last year, he had like 2 goals in 2 years (maybe not accurate, but something quite low).

This year its a few goals, an assist, some bonus... is he actually influential in the team in a meaningful attacking way this year?

He is a terrible player and one of the worst shooters I have ever seen. He's prone to brain explosions and has no technical nous whatsoever. Occasionally he will do a "no-look" pass that, while being ridiculously telegraphed to anyone who has ever played the game, will stun the easily fooled.

Lol no wasn't that an anomaly? At the start it was Rooney, Welbeck, Mexican Solksjaer up front, Cleverley then gets injured and United abandon the kind of passing game they play with him and shut up shop collectively. Even Nani wasn't getting forward much. Seemed like a product if circumstances, not his new role.

I know lol. Nani has been possibly offering worst points per million of all my players. I think Cleverley is the difference between a great utd mid and an average one. They go virtually tiki-taka with him, ponderous without. Works great with Nani and Rooney. Remember community shield v City? United mid rinsed them there. But city have grown and grown, both in squad and mentality.

      No.
Rooney played centre-mid the entire match, and even Cleverley was further forward for the majority.
Whenever Hernandez plays, Rooney plays deep...when Hernandez and Welbeck play, Rooney seems to play centre-mid, like yesterday.

Right that seems consistent. So when Welbeck doesn't play and it's just Rooney and Hernandez are we talking the 4-4-1 (Rooney) - 1 (Hernandez) we saw last season? Presumably the midfield may be reshuffled to accommodate this.

Did just my second 4 point hit of the season (and my first early transfer of the season) this morning (night over there) and went Kuyt and Sturridge > RVP and Ramsey, left me with 0.0 left over and if I did it now i'd be 0.2 short and soon 0.3 once Ramsey goes up.
Dont like price chasing but I had to this week.
Got in Kuyt for 2 weeks for Nani which was really f*cking dumb BUT... Nani only got 3 points in the 2 games, Kuyt got 2 last week and Dyer who comes in for Kuyt got 2 so the move got me a point lol

Maybe a few crucial passes and plenty of dangerous runs into the box.
At 6.5, and considering his fixtures, I think he is worth a try..

It was a toss up between him, Drenthe and Walters for me, went with Ramsey because he plays for a better team and probably because I support Arsenal 😕

Which midfielders a must-haves at the moment besides Silva and VDV? Mata is ok, but Chelsea have tough fixtures coming up...

No such thing as a must-have.
But the first 2 you mentioned are darn close.
The others are a lottery, at the moment Mata is on top, but that could easily change if Nani/Young run wild against Sunderland.
I don't believe in tough fixtures for the high-priced players as they can easily score/assist against anybody.

Ramsey and Walters are must haves for the season. I thought Ramsey was the best player on the pitch yesterday, very unlucky not to get some FPL points. The boy is a class act, he makes the game look effortless. Superb football brain.

    Morning guys
I just get in the flying Dutchmans: RVP and VDV with 4p hit (Nasri and Adebayor out)
and i continue live without United player, is it too risk?

    Krul (Vorm)

    Enrique Raylor ShawX Simpson Laet

    Silva VDV Ramsey Sinclair Dyer

    RVP Aguero Suarez

who's the best 4M Def to replace De Laet?

        - i think noone better Dyer at his price, he played very well yesterday. maybe i will change him to Allen if i need money.

        - yes, i choose Suarez for long term, but when he have tough fixture i will change him to Adebayor.

        - Hernandez? no mate, you always dunno what Ferfie does. I'm a fan of Man Utd but i think only United player we should have is Rooney. Silva is the best, VDV wasnt registered in Europe and that's a very good point about him this season. Nani and Young many roatation risk, I scare of Fergie. maybe Jones is good for short term.

    good day guys!

i've a techinical problem n need the help from some of the experienced players here..

so far my strategy was planning towards a gw 12 wc.. as it seems, i feel pretty good sitting on my current squad. hence my dilenma.

if i were to use my wc during the period for the "2nd"free wc (ie during the period after the transfer window closes), which one will be used? rationale for the qns is that if the free one is activated first, then there'll be less incentive for me to keep my wc for now

    any help is much appreciated!

Hi Jafa! Yep. clocks have gone back all over Europe so there was an extra hour in the pub for me. 🙂

42 is much better than my score, but above average. Unless Tottenham and Stoke score loads and keep clean sheets then I'm effed for this week but think I have a decent squad. No urgent changes required.

Captaincy choices are the bain of my FF career. It would actually be better for me if VDV tore a hammy in training tomorrow since my VS is RVP. But I have faith, albeit usually misguided. 😉

My worry is that TOT will get medieval with QPR and end up with a 6-0 drubbing. At least I've actually got VDV.

        3 players saved my bacon.

I'm ruminating and cogitating over keeping Rooney, only because I held onto Drogba (not literally) for too long last season after his bout with malaria. I'm not sure the inflictions of a hair transplant will last that long. Hopefully not the root cause of his drop in form.

It was a public holiday here yesterday so a lot of the pubs were closed so they opened late last night because of the change in time.

I feel like I've just put instant coffee in a microwave.

I'm keeping Rooney - don't get why some see him as a perma-DM.

The only thing Rooney is likely to catch is syphilis and I'm pretty sure that won't stop him scoring on the pitch. 😕

...and keeping up the theme-where in the world are ya?

Yep VDV. Crazy thing is, I thought I'd done it - at least twice because I'm always pressing the wretched confirmed button.

Oh well. At least I got VDV cap'n'd in Metro and I'm doing a lot better in that game than this one. 😕

Price means nothing - more volatile this year. I wouldn't worry about Sturridge - most weeks he will score and it means little who the opponents are.

Sitting on 35 with Wilkinson, VdV and Ade (c) to come. Some enjoyable football so far besides that 2 minutes of disaster when Kompany got sent off, lost his cleanie and then Graham hit an own goal past Vorm 🙂

Schedule? Mata did his bit...at last....did not expect the Rvp haul...makes me think back to last season when he went on a nice run...I just can't believe no one in my mini league are buying him 😕

Roonpig and Sturridge seems to becoming a problem....I'm considering on getting a ManU def maybe instead of Roonpig. Think it's the time ManU will go on a CS run with low goalscoring.

Sorry to butt in on the NZ conversation... but sturridge is giving me the twitch too. No direct replacement (Talent - Nick Bendtner is too uncertain... he'd have wooed me last year as a punt, but I'm trying to learn from my mistakes and not punt this year).

So it means a strategic choice -- go quite cheap up front or pick up another cheap-ish mid and go heavy up front. I'm looking to go heavy up front when I ship sturridge. Turn him into a 9m+ man.

I think you really need to load up front, Don.

At least with Sturridge, you have a top player at a top 5 club. They are always going to score. At the moment, if Sturridge continues to start, he is a real bargain at 6.7.

Man U are bugging me. Had mata and surez out for Rooney and Ramsey planned for gw12. Now not sure..... Maybe hernedez instead of Rooney? No mids seem worthwhile. Maybe cleverly but hate getting players that are average even in a good team

Worth holding surez a till 13 or 14 to see what develops?

is it worth using a free transfer NOW to do rooney>rvp?
won't be able to it later when rvp rises again. rooney does not seem to be playing at the top but looking at his fixtures makes me want to stick with him.

It was encouraging to see Gervinho unselfishly lay that pass off for RVP's first. They could form a good partnership if he keeps his head. What I didn't like was RVP crossing for little Theo to get squashed going for headers. And Walcott played very well yesterday - I don't say that very often. He laid on two brilliant passes that should've been converted.

    Does this solve Rooney problem?

problem ... Sick of him and need Van persie but no other coverage

solution -- have two free transfers so Rooney out for Van persie AND adebyour (already have VDV) out for hernandez

To me this looks ok , i will reconsider should Adebyour have a gret game tomorrow. Figure i need some man u coverage , but only way to get van oersie is to lose rooney.
Hernandez should play a fair amount in the easy games , and dioes seem to get points , and is at least going to be the furthest forward.

So is hernandes and van persie better than rooney and adebyour /

Nice, hoping Spurs run wild today. Last time i relied on a big game against QPR for my players I ended up with 0 from 3 (stupid Chelsea)
Went Kuyt and Sturridge > Ramsey and RVP
0.0 in the bank so had to act quit, hope it doesnt bite me in the arse.
Doing Nani > Kuyt last week has put my 1 point up compared to if I hadnt done it, so it wasnt a horrible move after all 🙂

Bored with talking about transfers until at least Tuesday night, so will watch the latest ep of "The Walking Dead" now, which had a great first season.

But on the topic of favourite TV shows, then I'll suggest a few which you may never have heard of but were absolutely effing excellent:

The Trip: Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon comedy.
The Staircase: Documentary about a murder accusation (DO NOT read the reviews before watching)
Would I Lie To You: BBC panel quiz show.
Ripping Yarns: Michael Palin and Terry Jones spoof traditional English boys comics. Tomkinson's schooldays is a classic.

(Just FYI, my top TV series of all time include The Wire, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Office, The Thick Of It and Dexter, up until series 5)

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

Well that was a sadly disappointing start to series 2, but anyway....

Forgot to mention Breaking Bad. Doh! Right up there with The Wire. Already have the Sopranos but not watched it yet, but a quick looksie at "The Shield" looks like it might be interesting.

Really can't be arsed with The Apprentice but Gavin and Stacy looks good though.

"Trust" was on my to download, erm I mean rent legally on DVD list.

        Thanks to all of you.
