Eden Hazard could be out for two weeks after undergoing scans on a groin injury. Geoff Cameron wins an appeal over his three-match ban, Arsene Wenger is keen to rest his regulars for FA Cup duties, whilst Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson remain sidelined for Liverpool’s cup clash with the Potters tonight.

Hazard Undergoes Groin Injury Scans

Reports indicate that the groin injury that forced Eden Hazard off against Palace last weekend isn’t as bad as first feared. The Belgian underwent scans on the injury yesterday and although tests have suggested there is no serious problem, Hazard may still miss the next couple of weeks as he recuperates.

The Scout Says: With a single goal and three assists to his name all season, it’s somewhat surprising that Hazard still sits in over 12% of FPL teams, given his 10.8 price tag. Chelsea’s form has clearly taken a turn for the better since Guus Hiddink arrived and although the Belgian has continued to struggle for both form and fitness, team-mates Willian (one goal, four assists), Oscar (two goals, one assist) and Diego Costa (three goals, one assist) have stepped up in the four matches since the departure of Jose Mourinho. At just 7.1 and 8.2 respectively, Willian and Oscar are far more reasonably priced for those looking for a route into Hiddink’s midfield as the Blues prepare for four home fixtures (WBA, EVE, MUN, NEW) in the next six Gameweeks.

Cameron wins appeal

The FA have written off Geoff Cameron’s three-match suspension after the USA international was wrongly awarded a red card for violent conduct at the weekend.

The Scout Says: In light of the FA’s about-turn, Cameron will be available for selection when Norwich City pay a visit in Gameweek 21. The versatile American – who’s classified as a defender in the Fantasy Premier League – relinquished his centre-back berth earlier in the campaign but recently has been favoured over Charlie Adam in central midfield. Although Cameron (4.3) offers out-of-position potential from that slot, his negligible goal threat (two in 131 appearances) and rotation risk ensure that Philipp Wollscheid (4.5) is a more attractive route into the Staffordshire outfit’s rearguard. Glen Johnson (5.3) has tallied five more attempts (13) and three more key passes (15) than any of his defensive team-mates but carries a more prohibitive price tag. Ultimately, Stoke as a whole have conceded the joint-fewest goals (11) and carded the most clean sheets (eight) since Gameweek 8 but could struggle to sustain that momentum as they prepare to lock horns with Leicester City and Arsenal across the next three Gameweeks (NOR, ARS, lei).

Wenger looking to rest regulars this weekend

Arsene Wenger confirmed that he intends to rotate some of his players when Arsenal welcome Sunderland to the Emirates in their FA Cup third round clash on Saturday:

“Of course I will give them a rest. I will give them a couple of days, an extra rest, but you never know what shape they come back in! It depends what you do when you have a rest! You can come back more tired!”

The Scout Says: Arsenal are to be commended for grinding out a result against Newcastle United last Gameweek, but they were second best for much of the encounter – as evidenced by the fact they mustered half the visitors’ tally of shots on target (six to three). A period of rest for their regulars – ahead of a challenging trip to Liverpool next Wednesday – could pay dividends then, with Mesut Ozil among those that Wenger is monitoring carefully. On the flip side, this cup interlude could afford Alexis Sanchez the freedom to generate some match fitness on his return from a hamstring strain. Wenger hinted earlier in the week that the Chilean could feature against the Black Cats, potentially lining him up for a cameo at Anfield.

Cherries Appeal Francis Dismissal

Bournemouth have confirmed they are set to appeal the red cad accrued by Simon Francis for appearing to deny Jamie Vardy a goal scoring opportunity at the King Power Stadium last weekend. Eddie Howe was initially set to accept the one-match suspension but has had a change of heart as it could effect Francis’ disciplinary record later in the season. The downside is that if the governing body deem the appeal to be a frivolous one, they are within their rights to double the defender’s ban.

The Scout Says: At present, Francis is only set to miss the upcoming FA Cup clash with Birmingham but an extension would also see him miss their Gameweek 21 home encounter with West Ham. The Cherries defence chalked up just one clean sheet through the first 14 Gameweeks but has since notched three shut-outs in six outings, augmenting the allure of their budget rearguard recruits. Aside from being tasked with taking penalties, Charlie Daniels ranks top for attempts (10), joint-top for shots inside the box (seven) and top for key passes (21) among Bournemouth’s back line – incidentally, only Alberto Moreno (39), Aleksandar Kolarov (32) and Aaron Cresswell (26) chart above him for chances created over the season. As such, he represents the south-coast club’s prime defender as they gear up for a favourable quartet of fixtures (WHU, NOR, sun, cry).

Jagielka in line for weekend return

Roberto Martinez intimated that Phil Jagielka could start for Everton when they play host to Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup this Saturday:

“He is not fully fit. The FA Cup third round is a more realistic target to start. But even having Phil on the bench gives you a lift. If we can maintain that defensive intensity it will be important because our play going forward is as good as anyone in the league.”

The Scout Says: In the nine league fixtures that Jagielka has started and finished this term, the Toffees conceded 1.22 goals per match and posted a clean-sheet ratio of 0.33. Conversely, during the 10 fixtures that their captain has missed due to a knee ligament injury, the Toffees conceded 1.6 goals per match and carded a clean-sheet ratio of 0.2, suggesting that Jagielka’s presence has been sorely missed. For now, we’re unenthused by an Everton defence that’s notched one clean sheet in seven outings and faces back-to-back trips to Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks.

Reds Duo still sidelined for cup clash

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Daniel Sturridge has missed recent training sessions because of niggling muscle complaints:

“Daniel had some problems this week, not serious, but he could not train, he could not make the next session. We had to wait a day, the muscles here, something like this, how a pre-season can be. It’s a pre-season without games so it should not happen too much but some little things happen and you’ve always got to handle this.”

Jordan Henderson, meanwhile, is undergoing treatment that Klopp hopes will bring an end to his persistent heel issue:

“We don’t really know because we have to wait. Each day, each hour, each minute. The thing that happened with the tendon in the foot is good, it’s painful but it’s good. We hope that when the blood is out of the foot, then the situation is solved. But at this moment we have blood around the heel. So he cannot train or play but we hope it is not serious. He is having treatment, everything we can do to bring the blood out of the foot we are doing but we cannot rush. It’s time we need and I can say nothing else.”

The Scout Says: Sturridge’s ongoing injury travails are affording Christian Benteke a free run at the lone-striker berth. The Belgium international boasts two goals in three starts but has flattered to deceive for the majority of his pitch time, carding the worst shot accuracy (25%) among all forwards that clocked at least 200 minutes across the last four Gameweeks. His erratic finishing reflects Liverpool as a unit, given that only Newcastle rank below the Reds in terms of goals (one compared to two) and shot-conversion rate (2.5% to 2.6%) since Gameweek 17. Considering that two of the league’s top-three defences are next on the agenda (ARS, MUN) for Liverpool, that trend could be set to continue.

Guys, this is my line up for GW 21. Does anyone have any thoughts?

    De Gea (Butland)

Alderweireld, Ward & Wollscheid (Bellerin and McAuley)

Alli, Ozil, Silva & Arnautovic (Mahrez)

    Kane (C), Lukaku & Iglaho

I've already used my FT on Ramsey to Alli so other than taking any hits I'm all set I think.

    Cheers!

Hazard has a minor groin strain and is out for 2 weeks.
Vardy has a groin operation and is out for 7-10 days.

Very strange. Someone at Leicester is not telling the whole story.

What would your current starting 5 be if you could pick anyone?

    I'd go with
    Curry (just, over Westbrook)

    Leonard
    Durant
    Drummond

Yes he is....Although, Alli inwards as a U21/H player is a priority to help with the flow of picks and stay within the 10 player limit further down the line with transfers,..as is Ighalo for the flow of funds. With three transfers we have to consider both in the right order as well as just having a list of picks. It's not just a straight forward swap who we want when we want.

It is, when fixtures are 'nice'. However, this is where luck takes over from skill.
Having the players is one thing, the skill element. Not benching their points/picking the correct player from the pool is luck of the day. FPL is cruel.

I've already done it to avoid the drop. At this stage you may as well wait, unless it looks like the second drop is about to happen or Ighalo is set to rise.

Actually... Ighalo is currently on 89% on FPLStats, so it won't be long...

People on there saying it's fake/not a great achievement, it's incredible. In regards to assessing Man City's poor away form, & using that as a basis for benching their players away in the future or to indicate they'll repeat this pattern again, is a fallacy in my view. This stigma that KDB & in turn Man City being poor away from home argument has lacked crucial context. Yes, they haven't performed up to expectations & have been 'poor' as a result, but I'm not convinced people are looking at a very important side to this flawed argument. Their fixtures away from home so far have been a stark contrast to their homers, facing many renowned defenses & top teams.

        - Away: (wba, eve, cry, tot, mun, avl, stk, ars, lei, wat). Scored 10 goals in 10 matches & performing (relatively) predictably according to fixture strength bar the blip in the Villa game. They blanked vs Man U, Villa, Stoke, & Leicester, those are three defenses who were all in-form & tightened up prior to the Citizens visiting. Only conceded 9 goals away from home, & boasting a better defensive record away. They kept 6 CS's in this time vs (wba, eve, cry, mun, avl, lei), again, pretty predictable performances for the most part. Conceding a nasty 4 goals (44% of their total) vs Spurs, 2 goals vs Stoke, 2 vs Arsenal, & once vs Watford (OG really). Again, they performed accordingly, three attacks who were in-form, or gaining form in Stoke's case, scoring 8 goals in their next 5 matches.

        - Home: (CHE, WAT, WHU, NEW, BOU, NOR, LIV, SOU, SWA, SUN). Whopping total of 29 goals scored here in those 10 matches, averaging nearly three goals per game 😯 They've yet to blank & have scored more than two goals in all but two games here vs Hammers & Liverpool. Flat-track bullies indeed. They've conceded 11 goals, interestingly only 2 of their 8 total CS's have come from home, (vs WAT & CHE) both coming courtesy of Man City's early defensive prowess in the first 5 GW's. Like the Spurs game away, it's not often Man City concede more than once (or twice for that matter), but they conceded a huge 4 goals vs Liverpool (roughly 36% of their total).

        - Remaining Home: (EVE, CRY, LEI, TOT, AVL, MUN, WBA, STK, ARS). Very tough home schedule here, after these next two & bar Villa, they face a barrage of tough away defenses & notorious parked buses (lookin' at you Pulis). Looks highly probable we'll be turning towards Man City's remaining away fixtures as a more predictable & reliable source of points, IMO.

        - Remaining away: (whu, sun, new, liv, nor, bou, che, sou, swa). So with the context in-play & with a highly alleviated, kinder away schedule, surely now there's a justified reason to be optimistic that their form will coincide with better fixtures, no? To me, it seems very likely that with the fixtures flipping can only lead to this away stigma being battered very soon & for the better.

Is the age of the striker gone? Having a formation based heavily on Def or mid with only 1 or 2 starting forwards is the way to go or not?

Based on the fact the lack of consistently scoring forwards this year compared to mids and even defs? Is 3-4-3 just a comfort blanket that has no real advantage?

What do we think are the main contributors to Kane getting returns? Are any patterns emerging to you guys (for example, the Dembele vs Alli theory that Kane needs Dembele's service to perform well).

Furthermore, with Dembele out, can Kane break that pattern and continue to provide us with a differential to Kun, or should we be looking to get Kun in if we can?

Lukaku has been in the best form of his life and has assists and baps in his locker too, and Ighalo's value (and form) make him quite hard to drop too, so that leaves an inconsistent Kane as the only potential makeweight for Kun.

      __________________________________________

      SECOND MINI-QUESTION:
Is Alli at an awkward price in that he's too expensive for 5th mid (and not nailed on enough potentially) yet not good enough to replace Mahrez / Siggy as our 4th mid?

Is it now the right time to get rid of Vardy (and/or even Mahrez)? It'll be hard to get Vardy back with big price increase. Should he just be kept on the bench with strong fifth mid to cover that up?

Last season there was a Main Wildcard that could be used at any time, plus a January Wildcard that had to be used during January.

This year instead we have a First Wildcard available from GW2 to GW19, plus a Second Wildcard available from GW20 to GW38.

Selling Lukaku would give my strikers 6 home games in the next 2 GW:

How he convinced the others to allow him an £8.5m midfielder coming off the back of 16 points in his last 2 games, playing for the champions at home to Sunderland is beyond me. He must have been using weapons grade Jedi mind tricks that week.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 21

This season we have revamped how we involve the community in our Scout Picks. Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

The big difference this year is the launch of the Scout Pick Champion Lottery. If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 2pm tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Thursday 3pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.
In addition, from this week FantasyBet (https://www.fantasybet.com/) are offering Community Champions the chance to win free entry into their £500 Guaranteed ‘Big Weekly’ game worth £22 by taking on our Scout Picks in a specially set up game ahead of Gameweek 11. In addition the eligible Community Champion who beats the Scout Picks by the highest margin every month will win a free entry into the £600 guaranteed ‘Boss’ game worth £55.
This is an extra offer that is available to any community champion who is 18 or over and not based in the US.
Champions will not be able to be selected as a champion for a second time. The champion will be revealed in a new midweek Scout Picks article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

He's on 68.5% at the moment so I'd imagine he will rise this week. Aguero is not far behind him though so they will probably both go up.

Looking at Siggy vs Alli in depth and I'm none the wiser 😕

    The stats
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/12380/
Broadly similar over the last 6 weeks and for fixtures played context they've put up the above numbers in a similar level of matches. Siggy's were harder oppo but he had more home games.
Alli: wba, NEW, sot, NOR, wat, eve
Sig: LEI, mci, WHM, WBA, cpl, mun

    Price
    Alli: £5.4m
    Siggy: £7.0m
Alli wins this comfortably but then price isn't really a factor this season, with many people sitting with huge stockpiles itb and expensive players to get rid of (Ramsey in my case)

    Baps potential
Alli:9 baps from 10 returns in 8 games
Siggy: 4 baps from 4 returns in 4 games
Alli: 10.6 Baseline BPS per 90
Siggy: 9.0 Baseline BPS per 90
Alli is in a stronger spurs side so the extra bbps is offset by the higher bar set for getting baps. This is basically a tie.

    Security of starts
Alli is playing exceptionally this year, he's a midfield equivalent to Kane last year in terms of breakout performance. I don't see him being rested/dropped more than twice for the remainder of the season barring injury.
Siggy is one of swans best two players, won't get dropped unless the new manager is a madman.

    Security at #10
Alli has played deeper at the start of the season but been pushed forward by Poch over the last two months.
Siggy is preferred there by the interim manager.
Both look good bets to stay there in the short term at least.

    Upcoming fixtures
Alli: LEI, SUN, cpl, nor, WAT,
Sig: SUN, WAT, eve, wba, CPL,
both turn a bit sour at 6 gameweeks and I'm playing short term for now. Both have very comparable fixtures.

      Neither for me.. Yet.

Alli is too casual and Siggy is too differential..

KdB - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez and then that 5th spot I might go for someone more expensive than Siggy/Alli... Thinking maybe Yaya..

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 12 months ago

        I'm sat on

Mahrez, Barkley, Yaya, Theo & Ramsey

and looking to get rid of one of the Arsenal boys. Payet is another option but injury return and an inherent distrust of West Ham is warding me off.

Alli for me. Maybe my judgement is slightly clouded by Siggy's propensity to blank for weeks whenever I own him, but Alli just looks a fantastic prospect. Stats are great, but they don't replace instinct from watching matches, and I have never ever been convinced by Swansea as an attacking side at all, whereas Spurs are a very good side. Alli just looks more threatening than Siggy to me, purely on watching both sides.

Also, while price has not been an issue so far, I would certainly look to save where possible. Alli will rise more quickly than Siggy, which may make it more difficult to justify in future, and with Aguero and Sanchez returning, and Chelsea looking stronger, value could soon become key.

😀 A kindred spirit who avoided Ayew & Gomis in week two.

There's definitely a strong argument on the price point but then Sanchez is the only player out there that I want that I can't readily afford and if I'm still tied in knots next Monday I'll probably go down this route but its the same arguing that made me go for Phil Jones over Mikey Smalling 10 weeks ago, so if I get a sniff of Siggy I'll probably ignore the price argument.

With the eye test I like Alli but haven't watched swans outside of MOTD in a while. Consensus is drifting Alli's way it seems...

Going Alli myself because of the price. Also hoping that he'll get better returns as he's in the better side.

Do think Sigurdsson could do well in upcoming fixtures though.

I am going some other way. Willian for the next 2 (WBA, EVE) and then jump on Payet bandwagon while he settles himself after injury. Hope it'll work 😉

Siggy is a proven quality player. He's worth a try.

But I'm looking to use my 1FT on Moreno>Spurs def as I wasted my one FT last week doing Ramsey>Wally(C). Else I'd have got Siggy. Also Lei defence has been mean for past few weeks.

I know that I am not a member but from the stats I have , Alli seems to have more shots INSIDE the box. Also , Alli is winning a large no. of fouls atm which adds to his assist potential IMO. The fact that Alli will be rising in price is also a positive. And for me to get Sanchez in the next 2-3 weeks , I cant afford Siggy without downgrading Kolarov which I am not very keen on.

Discuseed my opinion on the matter here:

        http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/01/04/lineup-lessons-gameweek-20-part-one/?hc_page=4#hc_comment_12335784

I´m actually with both Alli and Sigurdsson in my team. Alli on the bench for next gameweek. Might change dependant on the cup games.

I still have a feeling they will have similar points for the next 6 gameweeks but if someone is going to edge it´s Siggy imo. Siggy might be on pens for the new manager as well (he´s on pens for iceland). Has been immense with Iceland as well, few of the players around him there are playing in the premier league. Alli is on his first season so I doubt he will be consistent. Siggy hasn´t done much all season, he´s due to do something!

Both teams are not all out of attack, rather defensive, Alli has more potential for clean sheets I think.

I´m not objective as an icelander though, but regardless I´m going to have them both, going differential to catch up!

sig 1 goal in 10, 3 all season, and 1 assist
ali 4 in last 10, 5 for season and 5 assists
not got either, ali would be one, sig being pop this week after 1 goal in 10 !
dunno what the fuss is all about, unless he gets more goals in next couple games wouldnt even consider him as there are still better options, and cheaper ones with more goals/assists

Siggy played as a Forward against Man U, resulting in a goal. With Gomis falling out of favour with Alan Curtis, this could mean Siggy continues in the forward role.

Spot kick duties too as Shelvey's on the verge of a transfer out to CPL or NEW.

For fixtures, another view is by removing the SUN and WAT since they both have them in the next 5

      That leaves:

      Alli: LEI, cpl, nor
      Sig: eve, wba, CPL

I'd sooner have Alli for those, given Everton are a solid side (maybe not at the back but still)), and WBA at the Hawthorns are very tough to breakdown. Even Palace on the road are tougher than Palace playing at Selhurst this season. Not to mention that Swansea have still not been prolific in front of goal for quite a while now. If I thought Ayew would stay at CF I'd sooner punt on him than Siggy, but both are decent options, I just think Alli plays for the better, and more attacking team with better fixtures. Cheaper too, allows cash to bring in Costa/ Sanchez if they pick up more points over the next few weeks.

I'm going to fall into the classic "coverage" trap here Balders, but, since you don't have Kane I think you should go with Alli for Spurs attacking coverage.

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 11 months ago

That may or may not change Enzo. That said Kane + Alli would look good too.

Alli. Already got my hands burned with Siggy. Could have bagged Alli's points over the 3 fixtures had I not gone in for Siggy! Swansea simply do not score!!

Without wishing to blow my own trumpet, I translated a book about Borussia Dortmund which has come out as an ebook. I know there are a couple of Borussia Dortmund fans on here and I think it would be an interesting read for them. Of course, Jürgen Klopp features heavily as well.
