Jurgen Klopp rings the changes as Liverpool are held at Exeter as the FA Cup Third Round gets underway. Elsewhere, Eden Hazard is set to miss Chelsea’s home match with West Brom and Claudio Ranieri is optimistic on Jamie Vardy’s midweek chances of recovery.

Reds Set for Replay

Jurgen Klopp made wholesale changes to the side that beat Stoke at the Britannia in midweek as Liverpool made their way to Exeter. Christian Benteke was the only first-team regular in a side that also contained the likes of Jose Enrique and Tiago Ilori, who was recalled from a loan stint at Villa earlier in the week as a result of the club’s injury crisis in defence.

The Reds went behind twice but fought back to earn a draw; youngsters Jerome Sinclair and Brad Smith came to the rescue as Benteke turned in another disappointing display. The result means that Liverpool will face a replay later this month – adding to a packed fixture list that also includes an upcoming Capital One Cup semi-final second leg against Stoke.

After the match, Klopp discussed the hectic schedule and his problems in defence ahead of the midweek visit of Arsenal:

“It’s only a situation that we have, it’s no problem. We had some more games than other teams because we are still in the Capital One Cup, we played Europa League, that’s all. The main problems we have is because our centre-halves are injured in this moment. We had five centre-halves at the beginning of the season and at this moment no centre-halves, that’s the situation, but next week it could be different. Then we have to see what we can do, we work on it, and go on.”

Friday Press Conferences
After our update from Thursday’s press conferences yesterday morning, we take a look around the remaining sides for any news and worthwhile soundbites:

Eden Hazard, Radamel Falcao and Loic Remy have all been ruled out of Chelsea’s showdown with Scunthorpe on Sunday. In his Friday lunchtime press conference, Blues boss Guus Hiddink also conceded the Belgian is set to miss Wednesday evening’s league encounter with West Brom:

“Hazard will not make midweek [v West Brom]. We must be careful because a player must not fall again after twice being injured in a physical trap. This time we must take a little bit more time. He was fit to play but he got an unfortunate slip in the Crystal Palace game. We must be careful to maybe [bring him back] one game or half a game later than one or half a game too early.”

Leicester’s new signing Demarai Gray is available to make his debut at Spurs, though the Foxes are without Jamie Vardy, Jeffrey Schlupp and Matty James. Discussing Vardy’s fitness after the striker underwent minor groin surgery, Claudio Ranieri revealed his top scorer could yet make Wednesday’s Gameweek 21 visit to White Hart Lane:

“He’s okay. He trained today and he’s working with the physio. I think he should be ready for the league match [against Spurs]. I said to my physio I don’t want to lose him for a long time. If he’s ready for the second match against Tottenham, okay. If not, Aston Villa.”

Man City remain without Vincent Kompany, Wilfried Bony and Samir Nasri for the showdown with Norwich. That trio are joined on the sidelines by Eliaquim Mangala, who has failed to recover from the hamstring problem that forced him off against Everton in midweek. Addressing his side’s growing injury problems in defence, Manuel Pellegrini revealed he’s considering fielding Bacary Sagna in the heart of the back-four:

”We will see tomorrow the 11 starters, but Bacary is an option to play as a centre-back. He has done it before in the past and he likes to play in that position. He is an important option especially now that Pablo Zabaleta has recovered from his injury and he will start playing.”

Man United will be without Phil Jones for their match against Sheffield United, though Anders Lingard is available for selection once again. Louis van Gaal hinted at making changes for the weekend showdown:

”We have to wait and see because I have a lot of players who are in the ‘red zone’ [in terms of fitness], overloaded, and that I decide later. Young is not injured but he is overloaded and in the ‘red zone’. More players are in the ‘red zone’ and we have to decide if they can play against Sheffield United or not.”

Jack Colback is a doubt for Newcastle’s trip to Watford. Fellow midfielder Vurnon Anita has been ruled out, whilst Steve McClaren has revealed that Papiss Cisse’s groin injury isn’t as bad as first feared:

“Papiss has been out on the field running and as long as he keeps running he could be back training next week. On medical advice we are letting him rehab and he is progressing very quickly in that rehab. There may come a point where he breaks down or he comes right the way through and he is fit. It is that kind of injury. He is progressing well and he is on course to join us midweek. Hopefully we will see him soon.”

Matt Jarvis remains sidelined ahead of Norwich’s clash with Man City, though Alex Neil has revealed the winger is very close to a return. New boy Ivo Pinto won’t be included for this one as he’s only had one training session with his team-mates so far.

Tottenham are without midfield trio Mousa Dembele, Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard for their home encounter with Leicester, though Mauricio Pochettino revealed the former two are “very close” to a return.

West Brom duo James McClean and Salomon Rondon could be in line for recalls after serving out their respective three-match suspensions last week. Tony Pulis has also revealed that Jonas Olsson has a chance of recovering from a hamstring injury, though Victor Anichebe misses out with a similar complaint.

Absolute disgrace they put the Swansea game back a couple of weeks ago after fans had already booked hotels etc and it only helps Swansea as we have early kick off v Spurs. Swansea will probably only play reserves in the cup anyway. We've got Arsenal away!

Fantasy Football Scout dail hot topic

Who will be the best differential in GWK 21....and beyond?

For this I'm looking for a differential that will give immediate returns plus prove a consistent scorer over the next few games as well.

For me Swansea and West Ham look the best place.

Ordinarily I'd pick Andy Carroll but I'm not convinced he will stay injury free over the next six. Against Bou though I think he's a good bet.

So for me its old favourite Payet as my West Ham pick. For Swansea - Sigurdsson is my pick. I think he'll score consistently over that period.

Seriously though, I do believe he will begin to start scoring some goals and Southampton will have improve. There is a reason why most Southampton fans thought he would be their top goal scorer this season.

Agree with Jonty about Siggy, Payet I think will get his first attacking returns at home to City in a few weeks and he could be a great differential.
Martial will be if things continue to improve at United.

      lets look at mid candidates:

payet: the silva of last season a real 678 plus tickover guy. good fixtures with an in form if injury prone striker. nailed on and lanzini out makes him go to guy. only issue is hammers dont look full of goals. good pick

siggy: old stager hero for me from gw1 last time. great fixtures but strikers form to help assists a big minus. ok pick.

sanchez: have to wait for a bit on him and many will have enough arsenal for now

oscar and willian: good fixtures chelsea better attitude under gus and potentially lethal striker. haz out so will get ball and opportunties both good picks

mane : having been burned twice by him this season im not considering. all depends if he sees january as a shop window and starts producing but again no striker form or team form bar arsenal game. he will get a haul soon but could be away at a big club rather than banker home game. if tadic was getting the minutes he is the better pick for me.

and i know the due word is frowned upon but eriksen if rested and refreshed may come good

not even tempting yet, better and cheaper available with more goals/assists an for less money, but of course if he scores a couple in next couple games, then things will change

I'd hold till kun actually starts scoring. KDB could easily outscore him at home. They poor away not sure he worth the extra over the likes of ighalo Costa etc.

    Bench (Cech-Simpson-Dawson-Stanislas)

      Depends on where / in whose place they play imo;
He should in my opinion take Stanislas's place. Which should suit him fine and give him chances to show his quality. He should be let of the leash for counter-attacking because of his pace and not shackled with tracking back.

Got 1 FT 7.2 ITB so can get anyone. Got the idea of Ighalo to Aguero but undecided as Ighalo has been so good.

Mane is annoying me as well so kinda need to do Mane to Payet/Siggy/Oscar. Will decide after the cup games.

            How about you?

Will have to let go of Silva for my 3rd city spot if I want Kun and Alli seems like the perfect enabler for that so leaning towards

              Silva+Giroud ➡ Alli+Kun

However, considering Liverpool's injury crisis at the back and Lukaku's potential ankle injury I'm considering selling him instead of Giroud for the next two (mci, che)

Buying him back for GW23 would end up costing me a 0.3.

This game is all about points anyways, not cash. I've never really done a move like that knowing I'll get them back later on.

Based on your experience do you personally think its worth it?

              1. BabyB
                • 12 Years
                9 years, 11 months ago

Personally, i wouldn't. Not so much for the money but the use of a transfer when you may need it for another player later on. City have been poor defensively and Everton could have scored more than one in the cup so i would keep Lukaku unless some definitive statement that he won't play. Just seemed like an ankle knock so not that serious?

You already have walcott and ozil against liverpool. Never been one for a triple up in attack but others disagree.

For me, those transfers look solid. What formation would you end up playing?

Thanks for the insight! Triple is a bit much in most circumstances but it was set up that way for a potential Bournemouth or Newcastle blowout 😕

Depending who I end up benching between Mahrez/Lukaku.

I've been shifting between 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 all season thanks to Ighalo and been pretty successful bar 2-3 gameweeks where I got the benching wrong.

surman to answer the question and only play 2 strikers this week
all too premature for me before the cup matches pan out

Why are people selling Ighalo? Before the City game he'd scored in 6 games in a row and he's getting chances every week. Unless Deeney gets an injury, I fancy Ighalo to keep doing what he's doing

But why would you sell an in form striker? Surely your team has more pressing problems?

Arsenal saved €3.5 million by not offering Abou Diaby a contract extension as he is already out for the season at Marseille without playing a single game.

They could have saved themselves 10m by putting him down a few season back

If City get a DGW, which 3 players are we planning to get from City?

Silva, KDB and Aguero - all out attack?

Or maybe City mid, def and Aguero?
