Sergio Aguero seals Man City’s place in the Capital One Cup final by scoring the decisive goal in a 4-3 aggregate win over Everton. Kevin De Bruyne is stretchered off with a worrying-looking knee injury, whilst Ross Barkley notches the visitors’ opener at the Etihad. Elsewhere, Duncan Watmore bags a hat-trick as Sunderland’s reserves put six past neighbours Newcastle.

Aguero Seals Final Spot for City

Manchester City emerged as 3-1 victors (4-3 on aggregate) in a high-octane showdown at the Etihad, booking their place in the Capital One Cup final against Liverpool. Joe Hart, Bacary Sagna and Kevin De Bruyne were rested from the start, with Pablo Zabaleta, Raheem Sterling and Willy Caballero earning call-ups. De Bruyne eventually emerged from the bench at the 66-minute mark and went on to find the net before serving up the assist for Sergio Aguero’s winner. Unfortunately, however, the Belgium international had to be stretchered off with what appears to be a serious knee injury. As for the other Sky Blues recruits that made contributions, Fernandinho popped up with the opener, while Raheem Sterling claimed an assist.

The Scout Says: Having also served up back-to-back braces in the league, Aguero’s pinpoint header provides non-owners with further justification to invest in the 13.4-priced forward – who currently ranks third with regards to “transfers in” (106,000) this week – ahead of a trip to Sunderland. Considering that the Wearsiders chart top for goals conceded (46) and second for shots inside the box conceded (213) across the entire campaign, Aguero will fancy his chances of racking up the points yet again. Runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll with over 61% of the votes, the only real surprise now is that the Argentine’s ownership (25%) is still relatively low – he’s only the fifth most popular forward in the FPL game. Beyond the Black Cats clash, the Sky Blues embark on back-to-back home ties against two of the top-four sides, as Leicester and Spurs roll up to the Etihad. Although they’ve recorded shut-outs in their previous two match-ups at the Etihad, Leicester City (42) and Tottenham Hotspur (41) place second and third, respectively, for goals scored this term, suggesting that Man City’s inconsistent rearguard may find clean sheets hard to come by.

Pellegrini sweating over De Bruyne injury

During injury time of the second half, De Bruyne sustained a knee injury while tussling for the ball just outside Everton’s penalty box and subsequently left the field on a stretcher. Quizzed on De Bruyne’s status after the match, Manuel Pellegrini revealed:

“The doctor thinks, but he cannot be sure, that it’s a problem in his medial ligament. We’ll see how it is but it’s impossible to know before tomorrow. I’m optimistic he won’t be out for the rest of the season. We’ll see how important the damage is. It’s not the cruciate ligament; it’s the medial we think. Kevin has been a very important player all season. He didn’t start this game as we have nine games between now and next month. It is difficult to know. He is with the doctor, it could be the medial ligament. Tomorrow we will have more news but it is not a nice injury.”

The Scout Says: Assuming he’s ruled out, the Belgian’s 23% ownership might elect to stay within the same camp in their search for a replacement, given that Yaya Toure (three goals in seven) and David Silva (one goal and an assist in two) boast decent form and stand to profit from Aguero’s hot streak. However, prospective investors in those players will be wary of the fact that Man City and Liverpool – by virtue of their involvement in the Capital One Cup final on Sunday February 28 – now have blanks in Gameweek 27. By that same token, their opponents in that round of fixtures, Everton and Newcastle, also experience a bye week, diminishing the immediate appeal of players like Ross Barkley and Georginio Wijnaldum. That quartet of clubs will consequently enjoy a double Gameweek, which – dependent on their progress in the FA Cup – looks likely to be Gameweek 25, 34 or 37. On the flip side, both Dele Alli and Dimitri Payet are rendered more alluring De Bruyne replacements because of their respective schedules. The former travels to Norwich in Gameweek 24 and welcomes Swansea City in Gameweek 27, while the latter hosts Aston Villa next time out and faces a visit from Sunderland in Gameweek 27. De Bruyne’s 10.7 price tag also makes bringing in Alexis Sanchez (10.8) a straightforward swap. After returning to action last weekend, the Chilean is the fifth most transferred in midfielder in FPL, though his fixtures over those two Gameweeks – at home to Southampton then away to United – look a little more difficult.

Barkley nets for beaten Toffees

Despite taking the lead through Ross Barkley in the 18th minute, Everton were unable to threaten much beyond that point, recording just four attempts and two shots on target throughout the match. Romelu Lukaku had a subdued evening, failing to notch a single shot at goal as he continued the form that’s seen him score in just one of his last six league outings.

The Scout Says: Tallying zero goals and three assists in his previous nine league starts, Barkley has given his 36% ownership little to cheer about since Gameweek 15. Moreover, his underlying stats over the past four Gameweeks are somewhat lacklustre, with the Liverpool-born midfielder racking up four shots inside the box and two key passes. Nonetheless, the Toffees’ schedule (NEW, sto, WBA) affords him and an out-of-form Lukaku (four consecutive blanks) with ample opportunity to banish their lean spells. Certainly, both men will be heartened in the knowledge that Newcastle have shipped the fourth-highest volume of goals in away matches (23) prior to their Goodison Park visit.

Watmore stakes a claim

Duncan Watmore bagged a hat-trick for a second-string Sunderland outfit as they trounced Newcastle 6-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on home turf yesterday.

Elsewhere for the Wearsiders, Big Sam has recruited Ivorian centre-back Lamine Kone from FC Lorient. Speaking on the Paris native, the Black Cats boss said his physical attributes should hold him in good stead in England’s top tier:

“Strengthening our defensive options was a priority for us and Lamine is a player that has impressed me when I’ve seen him play. He is big and strong, attributes you need to play in central defence in the Premier League, and his arrival will give us healthy competition for places in a key position.”

The Scout Says: With five goals in four outings, Jermain Defoe remains the prime route into Sunderland’s attack. Across the last four Gameweeks, the ex-Tottenham stalwart placed fourth among forwards for shots on target (seven). The Wearsiders impressed as a whole during that time frame, ranking joint-top for goals (nine), top for shot accuracy (45.7%) and top for shot-conversion rate (25.7%). Nonetheless, they’ll struggle to maintain that potency in the final third as they prepare to embark on a challenging trio of fixtures (MCI, liv, MUN). Irrespective of whether Kone is able to forge a route into the starting XI, Patrick van Aanholt – who’s netted four goals in as many starts – will be near impossible to displace as the choice source of defensive coverage among Sunderland’s ranks. Regardless, their unforgiving run of match-ups doesn’t bode well for a back line that’s not posted a clean sheet since Gameweek 15.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    KDB replacements.

With KDB looking like facing a spell on the sidelines and a blank fixture in GAmeweek 27 his owners will surely be looking to ditch him.

For me as a non Payet owner the West Ham man looks the best replacement due to fixtures and form (well on the eye test at any rate)

Alli - is your easy budget replacement

But what if there's a double gameweek before the blank?

In that case Firmino looks key and possibly another ManC asset such as Silva.

Who are you replacing KDB with and why?

I don't own KDB but I own Walcott who I sold for Firmino. My reasons were that he is playing OOP atm , great form , great stats and a potential DGW 🙂

          Agree about Firmino fixtures.

          But have mare this week:

Alli, Payet, Firmino, Ozil & Mahrez
I currently have Mahrez on the bench - is this wise?
Who would you prefer to bench?

I brought him in before the C1C Semi's anyway as I wanted him regardless of DGW's personally . I already had Payet and Alli , so it was an easy decision

It's all an illusion. I'm a non KDB owner and already own Silva as a differential. Toying with the idea of swapping Silva for Payet but likely to swap Ozil now instead.

Sánchez for me. Already own alli, mahrez, Payet and ozil. Firmino would be a good option were it not for the upcoming blank, leicester away and Liverpool as a whole who I don't trust. No Chelsea mid's have convinced me at all, so I don't really see any other option then Sánchez for me. Unless there's a dgw coming up of course in he 25, but that seems very unlikely

Likely to do KDB to Silva then next week probably Ozil to Sanchez. Have Payet and Alli already but also tempted by Firmino should there be a double. Don't want to rock the boat too much while the DGW is still in the air so KDB to Silva seems the best option.

Any idea on price fall of KDB. Currently at 10.7, I am okay if it falls down to 10.6 since I brought him at 10.2. Can it fall 0.2 more before the deadline?
Had benching dilemma before KDB's injury...so am inclining to transfer him next week. But need confirmation about the price not falling to 10.5 before the deadline!!

He can go to 10.5 before deadline. He'll probably be red-flagged by then so this will make the 3rd fall less likely - but still possible.

in fairness that was shocking last night from the officials.whatever about offsides, handballs, and penalties-theres a large degree of subjective interpretation of all of those, mainly because the rules are so murky-but a ball over the line is a ball over the line. at least one of them should have seen it.

Yes, it was out but Everton's goal should've never counted, City hit the post twice, scored a 3rd goal, etc. Was also ridiculous dealing with the media in the whole Stones situation in the summer.

The amount of dross that comes out of his mouth these days is pathetic, even more so given how poorly he's been doing for 2 seasons now.

[Copy-pasted from behind the "new post -line" under the previous article:]

So, about last night, just how dire was Yaya's tracking? When City was able to set their defence with time, Yaya positioned very well in line with Delph and Fernandinho, but when he had to run it just looked like he doesn't have that in him.

This has been already noticeable before in this season. Just look at that West Ham match, for example. Payet tormented everybody, but everybody tormented Yaya. Just look how Koyauté "flies" past him to assist the first goal. I say "flies", because Koyauté hardly even really accelerates, nor dribbles Yaya. He just takes a couple of steps and Yaya turns slower than milk to follow him. Song passed him with similar ease for his long range effort. So did everybody else.

Yaya may look like he doesn't care, but I think he just can't run anymore. His average positions are very similar to those of Fernando, Fernandinho and Delph, but the heat maps and the live image both testify that these three all play both higher and deeper in midfield than Yaya. The volume of his game is just poor. You see it when City gets a fast attack, Yaya watches it from the half-way line, and when opponent hits them fast, he does the same.

This may be his last season. Maybe should be. He's still excellent when the game is rather still, though. When he doesn't have to run at all. When City is in possession in the final third, trying to unlock the opposition defence. Then he's good. But I still wouldn't buy him anywhere, except to a dominant smaller league team as a player-coach (I'm pretty sure he could make a fine coach one day). And to my FPL side as long as he keeps on getting fielded at City.

I'd just try and wait until you have defensive issues and then go for it. I'm not convinced by that chip really and can see myself going the whole season without using it.

I'd never purposely make my defence bad so I can use it.

I'm not sure AOA is that good for a double game week anyway - defenders can often get great points. Also remember it's one chip in one week. You'll more than likely want Triple Captain during a double, or wildcard or even bench boost.

One more thing. If we think that Townsend's "effective" position, what he could be good at if he was taught to stick to his role well and stop shooting from distance, would be a traditional winger, dribbling down the flank and hitting crosses in the box, does this effectively mean that he's doomed to never be a very useful player at the top level anymore?

If I recall, Pearson's Leicester kicked lumps out of him when he did. I think he got a different injury in that game.

I can't seem to leave this place yet. Here's a goal everybody should see and make some noise about so it would make this years list of Puskas Award nominees:

Maybe if it wasn't totally inept goalkeeping

Sure he's no Neuer, and has his arms badly positioned for a second when Okrah takes his shot, but inept is very harsh. That is a surprising move, the GK was clearly looking for him to cross, which happens to top GK's too, because it's unlikely anybody takes that kind of shot from such small angle. The long shots that make the list almost without exception are scored because of a GK's positional error. Yet they're fancy goals. And so is this. And only because it was scored in a not fancy Sudanese league doesn't mean it's not an awesome shot.

He left an enormous gap at the near post. That's more than enough invitation for most attackers, albeit they wouldn't got the rabona route.

In Messi's goal, the GK leaves a much greater gap between him and the post, and Messi exploits that with an easy shot. Didn't prevent Messi from finishing second in the vote.

In Florenzi's goal Ter Stegen is so far from their goal he can no longer reach it, in Lloyd's goal the Japanese GK not only has left too big gap to her goal, but runs clumsily semi-backwards - she could have covered it, had she taken a better run! Finished 3rd and 4th in the vote. Djeng's goal, bit the same: middle of the goal, from huge distance, the GK let's it pass between his hands.

Zlatan's Puskas award winner a couple of years ago was a massive fail by Hart.

So, shut the f up, GK mistake has never prevented a goal from being nominated for the Puskas award.

Also, I want some European big league club to give Augustine Okrah a trial. Don't mean it has to be Real Madrid, but a club of even the level of Palermo, Utrecht or Reims could see if they can make some use of those skills. Nothing much to be lost there.

I don't. But I would hazard a guess that YouTube is probably the best place to look. No doubt there is a channel you can subscribe to.
