As we make our way to the Weekly Shop this Monday lunchtime, we assess the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our own weekly squads.

As always, the player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re focusing solely on the FantasyBet player list.

Better buys

It’s difficult to pinpoint clean sheets in this midweek set of fixtures. Only five teams managed to shut out their opponents in the previous Gameweek, while the current lack of defensive nous on offer is reflected by the fact that eight sides conceded two or more goals last time out. Even Manchester United, who have been resilient at home – keeping seven clean sheets in eleven outings at Old Trafford – have conceded in the last two in front of their own fans. Nonetheless, given that opponents Stoke have scored just once in four matches across all competitions, David de Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m) looks a relatively strong pick for the keeper spot.

Southampton secured a win at Old Trafford courtesy of new signing Charlie Austin but that was only a second goal in four away trips, including blanks at Norwich and Crystal Palace. Arsenal should be capable of keeping out a goal-shy Saints side, having registered three clean sheets in their last five league outings. Only Mesut Ozil has accrued more bonus points than Laurent Koscielny (FantasyBet 6m) from the Gunners and the central defender also has three goals already this campaign.

A home tie with Aston Villa is a promising opportunity for West Ham to get back to winning ways after going three matches without a victory. Dimitri Payet (FantasyBet 7.5m) has created nine chances over the last four Gameweeks, so the Hammers playmaker looks key to breaking down a stubborn Villa backline that have conceded just once in three. The Frenchman has failed to contribute over the last two but a goal and assist against Bournemouth shows his ability to serve up substantial scores – at that price, he’ll be a popular pick this week.

Manchester City’s title bid may well rest on improving their unflattering away form. After picking up a first win in seven road trips at Watford, they were then held to a draw at Upton Park but a victory at Sunderland tomorrow night would reinforce their title credentials and put pressure on table-toppers Leicester, who they face next week. The Black Cats have conceded 20 goals in their last nine matches and with Sergio Aguero (FantasyBet 13m) in exhilarating form, scoring four goals in his last two, it’s difficult to see Sam Allardyce’s men keeping the Argentine quiet.

Poundstretchers

With United still plagued with injury problems in defence, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson looks a viable budget enabler for the Saints showdown. Coming in at just 4.0 in FantasyBet, he’s started the last two matches for the Red Devils across all competitions.

Leicester may have had a goal scoring slump at the start of the New Year but they’ve made up for it with some impressive defensive displays that have delivered four clean sheets in their last five league matches. Kasper Schmeichel (FantasyBet 4.5m) has chalked up three straight shut-outs at the King Power, making 16 saves over that run, and is unlikely to be too concerned as he welcomes a Liverpool attack that have failed to net in three of their last five outings across all competitions.

An injury to Jan Vertonghen brings Kevin Wimmer (FantasyBet 4.5m) onto our radar as a cheap route into a Tottenham defence that’s conceded less goals (19) than any other side. The Austrian is expected to slot in alongside Toby Alderweireld for the trip to Norwich tomorrow, though a run of five matches without a clean sheet may prove a deterrent.

While West Ham’s raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (FantasyBet 5.5m) offers a threat going forward, James Collins (FantasyBet 4m) offers a budget alternative for those unwilling to commit too much funds to a defence that have kept just one clean sheet in six. Certainly, visitors Aston Villa make the Hammers backline worthy of consideration – Remi Garde’s team have found the net just once in three away trips. Further up the pitch, Michail Antonio (FantasyBet 5m) also offers value as an alternative to Dimitri Payet – the midfielder has had nine attempts on goal over the last four and has scored or assisted in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Wilfried Zaha (FantasyBet 5m) was awarded the assist for Jan Vertonghen’s own goal in Palace’s home loss to Spurs and followed that up by scoring a solo effort against Stoke in the FA Cup. With Connor Wickham suspended and Yannick Bolasie sidelined, Zaha’s threat in the final third could be crucial at home to Bournemouth.

Benik Afobe (FantasyBet 6m) should also cause some problems at Selhurst Park, given that Palace have conceded 11 goals in their last four matches. The Cherries new striker has netted in successive matches and looks to have settled quickly since arriving from Wolves, with six shots inside the box and five chances created in three appearances.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the midweek fixtures. Tomorrow I’ll also bring you up to date on my progress in FantasyBet, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

    2) Lukaku + Moreno ---> Aguero + Williams/Someone Else (Suggest) (-4)

    3) Lukaku --> Aguero

    9 years, 11 months ago

Im sure its busy as all get out on the board here and Ive been away from the site for a while, but I really need some collective input here.

In a draft league where new players are added to the free agent list, for any manager to add immediately, so I am trying to pick the best strikers and a mid to boost my team

Currently picked up Khazri and Paloschi yesterday. Still have Mitrovic. It is of vital importance that I have players who look to be regular starters. Someone like Pato doesnt interest me so much cause I dont think he will be a regular.

    1) Will Doumbia displace Mitrovic and should I drop the latter for him?
    2) Should I throw Paloschi back and get N'Doye, which is looking more attractive if Fletcher leaves.
    3) Should I throw Paloschi back for Doumbia and have him and Mitrovic, able to use whoever is starting?
    4) Should I throw back Khazri for Townsend?
    5) Is there another player new to the PL at MF or FWD that I should be thinking about instead of these?

Cheers to any replies. Deadline day is madness.

Sorry, I don't think I can help much but I do know Mitrovic is nailed. I wouldn't throw him anywhere.

I'd also try and get Townsend as the knows the PL and is therefore less of a risk.

        Thanks Doos.

Yout think N'Doye is nailed on regardless if Fletch leaves or not?

If I get N'Doye, does that further my case to drop Khazri for Townsend? It comes down to having 2 SUN players or 2 NEW. Not really thrilled about that, but what can I do :p

I think some people are in for a shock, I think Guardiola will absolutely blitz the league. Everyone else required astronomical improvement, because we could be about to see football that we never have in England before. It could be great for the league, because when the top team falters, the rest seem to follow suit. Everyone now needs to up their game, the standard will have to be very, very high, because it certainly will be at Man City.

Why? He's won the CL twice and crafted possibly the greatest club side in history. Our league, at the top, is absolutely miles away from the level that Guardiola has been operating at, as shown by our recent CL displays. It seems to me a very Anglo-centric perspective, this whole "can he do it on a...blah blah blah".

Anyhow, I think he is about to prove himself here.

doubt it. What Guardiola did at Bayern did was par for the course - he took over the year after they won the CL, and then didn't win the CL for them.

At Barca since Cruijff the fans have been used to good football and success, and basically he just took over and slightly improved Rijkaard's team.

          1. Barcelona the season before Pep took over = 67 points in La Liga
Barcelona in Pep's first season = 87 points in La Liga

He took Rijkaard's team, who were struggling, immediately sold Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Deco, and made them arguably the best club side in history.

With regard to the importance of the manager - Alex Ferguson?

The sheer amount of money swishing about in the EPL next season will see all teams going more ballistic than ever signing players with the aim to keep in where the money is.
In fact it will be interesting seeing most teams in the league having squads better than anyone else in the world bar your mega clubs like Barca, Madrid and Bayern.
I just hope they find a way to give the young development players a bit of a go!

I fully agree. He transformed that Barca team into world beaters when they weren't at that level beforehand (albeit at a very good level).
Then he went to Bayern who had just had the perfect season, and he improved them again..
Now he goes to arguably his worst club, but with the most room to grow and improve, could be a Sky Blue short term future in England.

He didn't improve Bayern. They were a treble winning team, and the most exciting team in europe at the time who also handed Guardiola's Barcelona their most humiliating drubbing in recent years. Heynckes built that Bayern team. Guardiola mopped up at the Bundesliga sure, but that's akin to winning league titles with Celtic or PSG.
Rijkaard built most of that incredible Barca team. Guardiola inherited both.

I agree that he inherited Heynckes team, but I still think he improved upon it, introducing his brand of football to a group of extremely top-end players and getting them on board.. He certainly didn't take them backwards.

At Barca he VASTLY improved Rijkaard's team. Another level completely.

IMO Bayern were far more exciting before he took over. I think they've a better squad nowadays but they've been soundly beaten in Europe under him.
He definitely improved the Barca team but most of the parts were already in place. He cleared out some dead wood like a fat Ronaldinho, but the bulk of the Spanish European Championship winning team 2008 + Messi & Alves were there for him. If you think back to what Barca were like in 2003/04, Rijkaard really did an incredible job.

How can you say Pep's Barcelona are possibly the greatest club side in history? They were not a great side because they did not win the European club back to back.

There are other club which did. Saachi's AC Milan side are regarded as one of the greatest club side's ever.

They were not a great side!? Did you ever watch them play!?

I can't say they were the greatest side ever because, at 24, it would be impertinent to claim knowledge of all prior sides. What I can say, however, is that they are by miles the best side I have seen, and many people far older, and more knowledgeable, than me believe that they are the greatest side ever. That's why I said "possibly" and "arguably".

Yes I have watched them play countless times. A team I remember which struggled to break down teams who sat in a low block. Inter and Chelsea- CL.

One of the reasons why Pep left Barcelona was by his own admission, lack of variation in attack to break down teams, just as Inter and Chelsea games showed.

It'll be interesting to see him in such a competitive league. I don't know enough to question his abilities, but I will say that Barca and Bayern dominated their leagues (either exclusively or as part of a two-team stranglehold). He's yet to test himself at a mid-table (or even lower-top-table team).

Unfortunately the City job is not going to provide this sort of challenge either

I just hope they find a way to give the young development players a bit of a go

That's the thing they won't. With a few exceptions. Hence the ever weakening English national team.

    McCarthy Butland
    Ward B.Davies Bellerin Moreno Simpson
    Willian Alli KDB Ozil Mahrez
    Kun Kane Lukaku

Start Hennessey (BOU) or Butland (mun)?

Leaning towards Hennessey, but Utd being dire in front of goal makes it a bit of a dilemma.
