Following on from our look at the teams with the most favourable upcoming schedules yesterday, we now turn our attention to those which are perhaps best avoided over the coming period. Unsurprisingly, those with a blank Gameweek 30 populate our thoughts as Fantasy managers await for notice of rescheduled fixtures caused by this weekend’s cup postponements.

Everton

frisking

The Toffees undoubtedly face a tricky run in the short-term, with the Gameweek 30 blank followed by testing clashes against Arsenal and Man United. From an attacking perspective, those two sides have shown some vulnerability of late, though, conceding eight and five goals respectively, while they’ve also allowed nine and eight big chances respectively over the same period. Watford have remained stingy at the back of late, however, conceding just three goals in their last four, so the likes of Romelu Lukaku (8.8) and Ross Barkley (7.2) don’t look to have much upside over the next few weeks. Roberto Martinez’s men could have a double if their trip to Anfield is scheduled for Gameweek 34, along with the home fixture against Southampton. While those aren’t the most favourable of match-ups, the nature of the double Gameweek (DGW) means owning at least one Everton attacker seems a likely plan. Everton then travel to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 35, which looks a decent fixture given the Eagles have conceded nine goals in their last four matches, and allowed 10 big chances in the process, the second highest number in the league behind Aston Villa.

The outlook is similar from a defensive viewpoint, with returns appearing unlikely in the next two matches against Arsenal and Man United. The Gunners have scored exactly two goals in their last three away matches, while United have netted seven times in their last three encounters at Old Trafford. The Watford fixture does appear pretty kind, though, having only scored four goals in nine, and while clean sheets may be tougher to register against Southampton and possibly Liverpool in Gameweek 34, we may see Everton defenders such as Seamus Coleman (5.8) and Ramiro Funes Mori (5.5) begin to come onto our radars come Gameweek 33, while Joel Robles (4.3) could act as a handy enabler should he remain the first-choice goalkeeper, having played the last five league matches.

West Ham

frisking

Dimitri Payet (8.3) punished the 31,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses who transferred him out last week with a 13-point haul in the 3-2 win over Everton, but with a blank this weekend followed by just one favourable clash, at home to Crystal Palace, over the next five Gameweeks, his place in our 15-man rosters certainly looks open to debate. Chelsea and Leicester have both conceded just four goals in as many matches, and have been among the stronger defences in the Premier League over the last few months. As already touched upon, Arsenal’s defensive statistics haven’t been very impressive of late, but that still looks a fixture unlikely to yield too many goals for Slaven Bilic’s side. As is the case with many of the sides that face a blank this weekend, the likelihood is that many will face a DGW34, which in West Ham’s case would include the home fixture against Watford. Although the Hammers would then face a blank in Gameweek 35, given Payet’s exploits so far this season, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists, the Frenchman would surely be on many Fantasy managers’ wishlists once again. Michail Antonio, at just 5.4, is also worth considering, bearing in mind that he’s averaged 5.5 points per appearance since arriving at Upton Park.

Given Palace have netted in their last seven matches, it’s probably fair to say that fixture is not particularly friendly for the prospects of the West Ham defence, in addition to tough clashes against Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester. In fact, those four opponents all feature among the top seven sides for shots from inside the box over the last four matches, so the chances of registering significant defensive returns appear pretty slim. Watford’s stuttering attack could make the possible double in Gameweek 34 hold some appeal for those looking to invest in a Hammers defender, but in truth the benefits of owning Aaron Cresswell (5.7) or any member of the Hammers backline look extremely limited, given the upcoming fixture list.

Crystal Palace

frisking

As was the case with West Ham, Palace also have to face two of the most dangerous attacks in the league in the form of Leicester and Arsenal. The Eagles do travel to Upton Park in Gameweek 32, but while the Hammers last two home matches have seen them register slender 1-0 victories, it remains a difficult looking away fixture for the south London club. Relief could be provided by the visit of Norwich to Selhurst Park a week later, though, with the Canaries only scoring three times in their last four matches, creating just four big chances in the process. Palace’s possible DGW34 could see a trip to Old Trafford thrown in alongside a trip to the Emirates though, so we can probably expect the ownership of Scott Dann (5.8) to fall from 21% in FPL over the next few weeks, particularly given the Eagles have conceded 23 goals in their last 10 matches.

There has been no stand-out Fantasy asset among the Palace attack until Yannick Bolasie’s return to full fitness, but with the blank followed by difficult match-ups against Leicester and West Ham, the winger appears unlikely to be worth taking a punt on. Both teams have only shipped four goals in as many matches, though the Foxes have conceded 38 shots from inside the box over the same period – the fourth most among all 20 clubs. The Norwich fixture again stands out as the most favourable over the next six Gameweeks, but with the possible double including matches at both Arsenal and Man United, Palace assets may be something of an afterthought.

Be Wary Of…

Man United
The schedule for Louis van Gaal’s side over the next four Gameweeks (blank, mci, EVE, tot) looks hugely testing at both ends of the pitch. Clean sheets look unlikely up against the likes of Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane, while United’s major attacking threat, Anthony Martial (7.6), may well struggle to get much joy from those fixtures.

The prospects of United players will probably hinge on whether their home match against Crystal Palace is rearranged for Gameweek 34, creating a very favourable DGW (AVL, CPL). That would certainly bring Martial and many of his team-mates firmly back into our thoughts, despite the subsequent blank in Gameweek 35.

Watford
Odion Ighalo has seen his price drop from 6.4 in FPL to 5.9 having failed to score in his last six, and while the Hornets upcoming fixtures (STO, ars, EVE) aren’t totally without hope, the Nigerian is clearly not one who currently warrants a place in our three-man frontlines. Should their trip to West Ham be rearranged for Gameweek 34, though, he could possibly return to our radars, with a visit to West Brom the current Gameweek 34 match-up, followed by a favourable trip to Norwich.

Quique Sanchez Flores’ side still aren’t conceding too many goals, but in truth it looks unlikely Watford defenders will be of much use in the short-term. Again, the likes of Nathan Ake (4.4) may perhaps be decent enablers should that double in Gameweek 34 come to fruition, but otherwise it looks best if we look elsewhere for our budget options.

West Brom
The Baggies now face a blank this weekend following Arsenal’s 4-0 win against Hull in the FA Cup on Tuesday night, with the trip to the Emirates now perhaps being moved to Gameweek 34, when they currently host Watford. Tony Pulis’ side already face difficult away fixtures to Man City and Tottenham in Gameweeks 33 and 35, though, so while matches at home to Norwich and away to Sunderland in the short-term means Baggies defenders in particular are still valuable assets, they may not make the cut as we prepare out 15-man squads for the impending doubles.

Likewise, the in-form Salomon Rondon (6.5) could provide a nice differential in the short-term in favourable match-ups against Norwich and Sunderland, but in reality he remains unlikely to see any investment, particularly with those tricky away fixtures that follow.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why Fantasy managers should become Watford and Reading Fans

One of the questions on last night’s Scoutcast was whether those wildcarding for the double gameweek games of GWK 34 should be worried about blanks in GWK 35.

    The simple answer is yes.

The more detailed answer is that we should all become Reading and Watford fans this weekend.

    Here’s why.

So far the only teams already with a double gameweek to come and certain to play in GWK 35 are Liv, ManC, New and WBA.

That doesn’t give us a lot of scope so we need more.

Those reinforcements could come after this weekend in the FA Cup quarter finals

    These are:

    Reading v Palace
    Everton v Chelsea
    Arsenal v Watford
    ManU v West Ham

Of these already ManU and West Ham are out of GWK 35 reckoning. Their fixture is blank as inconveniently they both play each other in GWK 35 meaning the winner of their FA Cup tie is irrelevant.

If Reading beat Palace and Chelsea beat Everton, this is great news for us as we can also add Everton and Palace to teams playing in GWK 35.

If Everton beat Chelsea, this is good too, as the GWK 35 Everton v Place clash would be blank but Chelsea and Bournemouth that week would be on.

If Watford beat Arsenal then the Arsenal v Sunderland clash is on – giving us two sets of promising players.

The worse case scenario is that

    Palace beat Reading
    Chelsea beat Everton
    Arsenal beat Watford

That means we lose Palace, Everton, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Arsenal and Sunderland in GWK 35 and the following fixtures remaining

    Villa v Sou
    Lei v Swa
    Liv v New
    Man City v Stoke
    Tott v WBA

Some good players there but it would bring to an end any realistic dream of having a full and credible 15 of double gameweek players in GWK 34 that can be taken into GWK 35.

If the worse case scenario does happen, then I'd prefer this. Means those with more planning will score much better, like this gw coming, and also I will have to hold to some Lei/Tot players that I wouldnt really want to get rid of anyway.

While the 15dgw players may be the dream, how often have sgw players outscored popular dgw picks? I cannot see myself getting rid of Mahrez, and my current plan is to keep Alli as well.

Bit of a gamble dumping these players but I guess it depends on where you stand OR. There is nothing stopping you getting ali or mahrez back in after the dbl

most people have a lot of value tied up in Mahrez, so bringing him back in would be hard

    5. But it's all relative - if "we" have a bad GW34/35 combo, then everyone else does as well (trying not to use the "c" word!), and would suggest we would still have the edge in maximising and planning the blanks/DGWs/chips we did before - we would just need to do it a different way perhaps.

Not necessarily the case. If we have a bad gw34/35 combo then the noob that know nothing about gw35 blanks may have a very nice team in 35 and a team not overly stacked with the poor dbl teams in gw34. Since it is the season of the noob then maybe this is the most likely scenario ðŸ™

This is, of course, for those looking to WC in GW33. Those who can easily get 11 DGWers (fixtures permitting) for GW34 via FTs and are planning a GW36 WC will be looking for the opposite.

If Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal win, isn't there a chance that Sunderland Everton game to be rearranged in GW35 weekend ? Both Sunderland and Everton will have no games either in the cup or league.

Yep I think that is a possibility. Was something someone flagged up the other week when I suggested there could be a tgw.

Just hope the PL are quick to announce the rearrangements after the FA cup games, and these scenarios all impact massively on transfers for next week in terms of when WCs will be played.

      2. Yep - very possible.

This sort of thing is why I've always said the PL needs to wait until after this weekend to confirm the dates for the rearranged matches, rather than this "on or around 10th March" nonsense.

Some games can be confirmed now though, as they are not affected by any other games. Particularly I hope to get an announcement about City Newcastle game as it may affect my transfer this week.

          1. Definitely - Newcastle v Man C date is the key to everything for me. Going to be in a right quandary with my transfer this week if there is no announcement!

The "worst case" still gives an option of this gw33 (34) team of dgw'ers:

      DDG Elliot
      Kompany Dawson Cresswell Daniels Bortwick-Jackson
      Firmino Milner Yaya Wijnaldum Payet
      Aguero Berahino Lukaku

(funds permitting (if not, there are cheaper options from most teams))

Having rolled the transfer from 34 and using 2fts in 35 you could have

      Elliot
      Kompany Dawson Huth* Dier* (Bortwick-Jackson)
      Firmino Milner Yaya Wijnaldum (Payet)
      Aguero Berahino (Lukaku)

If you're willing to take a hit or two it could get even better. And this is if all the fa cup results go in the worst way.

So there may still be hope.

Cheers. Are you planning on only having players in gw34 with a dgw, or are you considering keeping the likes of Mahrez, Kane etc? I think I'll go "all in" myself but it wouldn't be the biggest surprise if say Kane got more points playing stoke than Berahino did playing Watford and Arsenal, for instance.

I think it would be sensible to keep one or two single players with form and fixtures. But in the main I'd be looking at dgwkers.

I think Mahrez may stay - but happy to let Vardy go. Happy to dump Kane if Costa is fit and available.

Agree. I also think maybe Özil over Payet, given Arsenal's great gw34 fixtures. Out of the "draft", who would you ditch for Mahrez? Milner?

Yes, if I'm keeping Mahrez I guess Milner is the one to go. I'm somewhat "lucky" because I switched Mahrez out for Mirallas a couple of weeks earlier this season (a punt gone bad), so I don't have as much value tied up in Mahrez as many others 🙂 Always a silver lining, I guess.

A problem that we won't get away from if we're wildcarding in GW33 (to use the bench boost in 34) is that we probably won't have (at least not all of) Mahrez, Vardy, Özil, Kane, Alderweireld, consistently good scorers, in GW33.

Could be a "hide behind the couch"-week. "lucky for us" the fixtures for Spurs (United at home) and Arsenal (west ham away) aren't very good, but Leicester is playing Sunderland, and could really punish us for relying too much on the GW34 BB.

        Any thoughts?

Good article, thanks Jonty although I agree with some of the points already mentioned by posters above, you additionally need to consider the possibility that some of the already postponed games could be accommodated in GW35 to help ease the backlog.

Just as a reminder, these are the games still awaiting dates:
      Liverpool v Everton (GW27)
      Newcastle v Man City (GW27)
      West Ham v Watford (GW30)
      Sunderland v Everton (GW30)
      Man Utd v Palace (GW30)
      Liverpool v Chelsea (GW30)
      Arsenal v WBA (GW30)

And so referring back to your worst case scenario above

'That means we lose Palace, Everton, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Arsenal and Sunderland in GWK 35'

Actually they could easily reschedule Sunderland v Everton into GW35 for example especially as Newcastle are away that weekend and Liverpool are at home, am sure both sets of fans and the police would welcome it rather than a midweek game.

I think until this weekend is over there is too much uncertainty, and I am sure they will not announce any fixture changes until this weekend's FA Cup ties are completed.

Even then though there may be a massive amount of uncertainty remaining of course if any games are drawn so the wait may just go on for a little bit longer I am afraid.

Good point. Will wait and see - the more the merrrier in GWK 35 as that makes the whole GWK 33 wildcard, GWK 34 bench boost DGWK and GWK 35 having a strong XI much easier to navigate.

my thought have always been that the wildcard 33, bench boost 34 for 15 DGW is a bit of a fantasy

I'll probably still be doing this strategy anyway - but I won't be taking Mahrez out of my team and lose about 1.2m on him given I've owned him from day 1! Others may come in to that category to lesser extent.

I think whatever happens you can easily plan for a rosta of 11-12 DGWs with 2 or 3 single game week "big hitters" on the bench who have good GW35 fixtures

all of which actually means that the WC36 and Bench Boost/Triple Captain 37 carries more weight - because the loss of such big players is easier to swallow for 3 games rather than 6 - both in terms of team value and them actually scoring points.

The more I think about it, the more in dislike the 15 BB players anyway.

I think having to keep Mahrez, Kane, Vardy and Alli and maybe one defender from them for SWA or WBA is actually much better.

      Then having 10 DGWers.

In this scenario I guess I could probably work towards DGW34 without even using my wildcard...

Your worst case scenario is also the most likely. Personally I have money on Palace for the cup, so I hope they get through regardless of fantasy effects 😀

You can have 3 Liverpool players, 3 City, 1 Newcastle and 1 the WBA.

With two FTs and -4 is possible you a very reasonable XI in GW35.

In particular, the more unpredictable for the games, the better for me.

If you save a FT in GW 34, you'll have 2 FT in 35. So if you would choose 9 players in your WC team that have both a DGW in 34 and a SGW in 35 it would mean you get: 3 LIV players 3 MCI players and 3 of NEW/WBA.

You can then use 2 FT to transfer out 2 players that had a DGW in 34, but no fixture in 35 causing you to still have 11 players in 35.

Let's say you would bring in Firmino/Coutinho/Sturridge/Kompany/Silva/Aguero/Wijnaldum/Janmaat/Foster in your WC team in 33. Those 9 players have a DGW in 34 and have a fixture in 35, leaving you to use your 2 FT in GW 35 to bring in 2 extra players in order to be able to field 11 players.

Finally, if you bench 4 players that do not have a fixture in GW 35 for that GW, it means you'll already have 4 players that have a DGW in 37 again.

How do we know that Man City's DGW will be week 34. I'm not seeing anything that gives me that certainty. Surely it could be week 37 too

But the later you use a WC (33 vs 36) mean that you run the risk of more rotation as by GW37 most positions such as relegation and Europe leagues are settled.

GW33 WC and bring in 9 players who play dgw34 and also 35.
Other remaining 6 just play dgw34 with gw35 blank.
Save FT gw34. Use 2 FT gw35 to transfer two blankers for players who play gw35 (nice way to get back spurs/leicester assets back).

      Shouldn't be a problem.

hat would you do with that defense ?
Toby - Fuchs - Targett (Azpi - Koscielny)

    1.2 ITB

With Targett being a rotation risk, should I take a hit to be sure to field 3 ?
If yes, who would you ship (Targett,Kos or Azpi), and for who ? (Williams, Wollshied, Daniels ?)
Will probably wildcard in GW 33

I reckon he may be a decent option for a few weeks, if Man Utd knock Watford out the cup and Watford end up with two games in week 34. Should the double week arise in 34 as predicted, I'd be looking to go heavy on the likes Ozil, Payet, Lukaku, Firmino etc. A cheaper forward option like Ighalo may help make that achievable. I know his form hasn't been great but I wouldn't bet against him scoring against any of the below.

      Week 33: Everton (H)
      Week 34: WBA (A) & possibly West Ham (A)
      Week 35: Norwich (A)

United blank in GW35 is not confirmed. If United and Palace both lose this weekend then chances are their GW30 game will be rescheduled in GW35 rather than giving both teams the weekend off.

    1. True - especially if Everton beat Chelsea as well (Palace due to play Everton GW35).

They have blanked out because they can't play WH that week. One of WH or United will be in the SF in GW35.

If United and Palace lose and Everton win then GW35 is open for United-Palace.

So depending on the fa cups.... maybe it will be better to bench boost in gw 37?? And triple capt in 34?

This surely wld mean we don't have to make the tough decisions to drop... mahrez etc yet.

How hard wld it really be to get 11 dgw players and 4 decent subs that assist with the strain on gw 35

Possible but Man City v Stoke is already schedule that weekend and as the postponed game is Man Utd v Palace then I guess they may have difficulty agreeing both Manchester clubs playing at home the same weekend, police consideration etc.

If they do then Man Utd would definitely have to be on the Sat as City game on Sunday already set for TV.

I sold Bellerin, kept Azpi. Bellerin's theoretical DGW looks better, but I flicked through the fixtures and there were more coming up where I'd rather play Azpi so that's what settled it for me.

          Mad Max was.

          1. I was disappointed with Mad Max - just seemed to me to be 2 hours of cars blowing up with very little plot.

True. There was no plot. The way the movie was made made it good.

Best defender to bring in the gw with budget of £5.9?

    Schmeichel
    Wolls Daniels Williams ...........
    Mahrez(vc) Alli Arnie
    Vardy Kane(C) Aguero

    Gomes Ozil Payet Dann

I'm thinkin Dier, though that would be 3 spurs players
    (Already have 3 Leicester)
