The second round of group matches conclude with Saturday’s fixtures, as DraftKings managers look to construct eight-man squads from the remaining six nations.

Over in Group E, Belgium are left scrapping for survival following their abject display in the defeat to Italy. They must now find a way past the Republic of Ireland who head into that encounter having earned a point in their opener against Sweden.

Belgium must surely seek a victory, which should lead to a more open affair, drawing the sting from the attacking talent on show. Belgium’s teamsheet looks difficult to predict, however, with DraftKings managers having to shop late should they look to Belgium for goals.

There are two matches in Group F with Austria facing an identical scenario to the Belgians. They suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Hungary and now head into an enthralling clash with Portugal. Fernando Santos’ men were held by Iceland, with Cristiano Ronaldo contained; they cannot afford to be similarly subdued against the Austrians.

Iceland take their point earned against Portugal into their meeting with Hungary in what looks set to be a cagey affair. The Hungarians can seal passage to the knock-outs with a victory, although Iceland’s disciplined rearguard is likely to be in evidence once again.

We’ve studied the likely narrative of the three fixtures and sifted the assets on offer to provide our DraftKings picks to help steer your selections ahead of Saturday’s contests.

Vierinha – Portugal, – $4400
Deployed as a winger in his Porto days, he’s now recognised as a talented right-back for Wolfsburg and his country. Vierinha came through Portugal’s disappointing performance against Iceland with some credit, raiding down the flank to provide 12 crosses, 10 of which came from open play. Along with Raphael Guerreiro on the left, we expect his service from the flanks to be a factor again in the crunch meeting with Austria.

Nani – Portugal, $9300
While Ronaldo registered ten efforts on goal against Iceland, nine were from outside the box, leaving it to Nani to provide the most potent threat. He notched Portugal’s goal and all five of his goal attempts arrived from inside the penalty area, with three hitting the target. With four crosses supplied, Nani enjoyed a profitable evening and will head into the clash with Austria looking to emerge from Ronaldo’s shadow once more.

David Alaba – Austria – $7500
The Bayern Munich man did his upmost to drag Austria through their defeat to Hungary. He fired in six efforts on goal in the 2-0 defeat – no other midfielder registered more goal attempts in the first round of matches. That continued the trend seen in qualifying when Alaba, deployed as a box-to-box midfielder, provided more goal attempts per minute than any team-mate, whilst also ranking second for crosses. Alaba will surely be a key figure as Austria seek to salvage their Euro 2016 campaign.

Attila Fiola – Hungary, – $4000
Iceland mustered just four efforts on goal against Portugal and, while they could show more ambition against the Hungarian’s, investment in the Magyar back-line looks viable. Fiola just edges out fellow full-back Tamas Kadar in our reckoning as he demonstrated more intent to get forward from right-back, both in the win over Austria and in the warm-up matches heading into the tournament. Fiola also tends to win more tackles and played as a striker in his youth, so could even deliver an unlikely goal.

Robbie Brady – Republic of Ireland, – $5000
A mainstay of our Premier League DraftKings line-ups, Brady continues to translate his impressive points output to the international stage. The Norwich City man contributed ten crossed balls in the 1-1 stalemate with Sweden, continuing a trend that saw him supply 93 crosses in qualifying – ranking third for midfielders overall. Classified as defender in DraftKings, his supply line looks pivotal to the Republic of Ireland’s chances against Belgium, with set-pieces likely to play their part.

DraftKings contests for Saturday’s matches are now available, including a $3 entry “Striker” with a $10k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I take it we don't really know how much prices will change after the group stages. I'm assuming, probably like a lot of others, that the price fluctuation will be quite modest....but will it?

Really no way of knowing for sure.

Part of me is tempted to wildcard to try and grab the risers - it won't be far away from the players I would pick anyway, and if they do turn out to be bigger changes than most expect, it'll be a better differential for me than any player could be.

The worry is that players go up in big lumps...If KDB is no longer in the game would Payet become the 10 mill mid...Nolito an 8.0 fwd...blah blah blah...

It could have a massive shake up for all we know...or maybe not.

I hear you. Personally, I think it can be a big time game changer. But they give us no cue of how to predict it, so it's worse than risky to trust any predictions.

Of course, we have to do _something_. In want of knowledge about price rises, I have some trust in that a team that scores a lot of points cannot be a team that drops in value, and thus don't plan to change much because of this.

Maybe fabregas' one would be generous, but Djourou clearly got the last touch before Mehmedi's volley and no assist. And yet Alli falling in the box is an assist apparently....

      1. Camp No No
        • 12 Years

It may be a very 2nd string though. Most of their defence has a yellow card, and they might well rest all who are under threat of getting suspended.

        1. GreennRed
          • 14 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

That's what I said. A second string Italian defence is still quality. No point in what ifs for third round, go for broke against the chocolate-makers.

          1. Camp No No
            • 12 Years
            9 years, 7 months ago

Ok. I think where we differ is that I'm afraid that 2nd string Italian defence is not that good. Suppose it's this:

            --------------------------Sirigu
De Sciglio - Ogbonna - Barzagli - Darmian

Ok, it's kind of classy, although far from the all Juve defence, but more importantly: would that be the first time they'd play together? Defences always need time to learn to coordinate their actions. I'm sure you'd get your fair chances to score against them.

      2. Camp No No
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

Bonucci, Chietini, Buffon, De Rossi and Motta have a yellow. Maybe one of Motta and De Rossi starts anyway, but I could see them resting that whole Juve defence, Buffon included, to be sure they'll have them all in the round of 16.

Unless Ireland wins Belgium, in which case Italy has to get at least a point to win the group.

They might prefer finish 2nd though, the group winner will have some tough fixtures ahead.

    2 questions:

I've got my armband on Giaccherini too. No way I'm moving him to KDB.

KDB needs a goal, or an assist and clean sheet to match. Needs more than those to pass. Not worth the risk imo.

This may seem like a silly question but.

If you don't make any squad changes during the gameweek you get autosubs right?

If you change your captain does this count as a squad change and do you lose autosubs then?

I only ask this because there is a member of team Russia in frogball who looks to be depending upon autosubs but is stuck with Muller captain. He would lose 9 points in autosubs though if he changes it possibly

Denayer has a very small chance of playing

But we'll see the line up so no problem 😀

McDonald's game conundrum. Are people tranferring out players that have a high rotation risk gw3 (Juanfran, Niloto for example) when youll want them back for round of 16 and there's a chance their price will go up?

I wouldn't, not only for the price change, but also that Spain hasn't won the group yet. They need at least a draw against Croatia, so there's every chance that Nolito starts even if he wouldn't finish the match. Juanfran _should_ be dropped, not rested, though (my opinion, not a prediction).

I see this all the time just because you do not rate a player does not mean he is going to be dropped or rested or is under any threat of being dropped or rested . Unless I see something from Del Bosque I am going to assume those players are going to start .

Even though Dragovic is suspended he's still substitutable. Handy if you wanna sub out a player on minus points.

The grand GW 2 WC plan:
          De Gea (Rui Patricio)
          Giaccherini Bonucci Hector Juanfran (Guerreiro)
De Bruyne Perisic Kroos Hamsik Payet
          Bale (Nani, Nolito)

I'm hoping this team looks like getting points in matchday 3 because it looks set for the R16. Just downgrade Bale and upgrade Nani.

Pure OCD kicking in here, can't choose who to sub out for KDB, Giroud Muller or Ozil.

Ozil had a solid game, Giroud is gorgeous and Muller is the pure lad. Decisions of a manager.

Isn't it a better idea to wildcard after the QF instead of before?

We have a wildcard after the group stages. So wildcarding before the QF would mean selecting your players for only 1 game. Since the teams that finished first in their group, will play aginst teams that finished third, chances are pretty high those will be the teams where you will select your players from and those will also most likely be the teams that go through to the next round. So wildcarding after that round won't change much in your team since 4 transfer will cover most of the players from kocked out teams. After the QF, there are only 4 teams left and lots of your players will be out of the tournament by then, right?

That all makes sense, but you lose the opportunity to bank some cheapos. After the QF/Ro16 there will probably be a lot fewer (possibly no) 4.0 defenders and 4.5 mids. You will want to bank one or two of these to ensure you have the funds to buy the starting team you want.

I've seen this argument before but will 4.5 players actually rise. The only point in having them is because they are cheap, rather than usefull. But will a Albanian 4.5 midd rise in price? Or isn't is possible to buy a player that is already kicked out of the tournament?

The point is not about price rises. It's about the possibility that once we are into the knockout stages, players from the knocked-out teams will not be available. When you are constructing your perfect team for the knockout stages you will want some cheap bench fodder to allow you to afford good players in your 11. Once the knocked-out teams' players are shut out, you cannot buy them. There is a very good chance that those handful of 4.0 players will not be available to buy once the group stages are over. So it helps to have one or two in your team before that happens.
