Last week, Tottenham confirmed the signing of AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen for a reported fee of £17m. The Dutch international is the club’s second summer signing following the arrival of midfielder Victor Wanyama from Southampton last month.

Having penned a four-year contract at White Hart Lane, the 22-year-old is optimistic of quickly securing a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans.

“Harry Kane? People can say what they want but I’m not afraid of anybody…He is a great striker but we will see how it goes. We can complement each other, I think I can learn a lot from him. I hope to play a lot, to score a lot of goals and to win prizes. I have a great chance to develop myself here. I can train with a young, talented group with very good staff and I’m ready to develop myself. I can grow with this group, it’s a very talented group and next season we’re in the Champions League as well, so that’s very nice.”

The History

Born in Heesch, Netherlands, Janssen started out his youth career at SV TOP and FC Oss before moving to NEC Nijmegen at the age of 12. The forward then signed up with Dutch giants Feyenoord in 2009 and spent four years at the club’s academy, playing a part in the U19s national title-winning side in 2013.

Janssen was subsequently released at the end of the 2012/13 campaign, though, and moved to Eerste Divisie side Almere City. In two seasons for the club, Janssen made 74 appearances in all competitions, scoring 32 goals and registering 12 assists, before being acquired by AZ last summer.

The five foot 11 frontman started slowly as he stepped up to the Eredivisie, failing to score in his first 367 minutes of league action, but enjoyed a sensational second half of the campaign, ending with 32 goals and seven assists from 49 appearances in all competitions.

Janssen represented his country at all youth levels from Under 15 upwards and most notably at Under 21 level, scoring eight goals in 10 matches. Handed a senior debut against France in March, he went on to bag a goal and assist in a 2-1 win against England four days later – so far, Janssen has three goals in five appearances in his fledgling international career.

The Prospects

While Tottenham enjoyed a hugely successful season last term, the one glaring weakness in their squad was a lack of cover for Harry Kane. Pochettino has wasted little time in addressing that issue, and speaking about his latest addition, believes Janssen has both the physical and mental characteristics to make an impact in the Premier League:

“Vincent is still very young and his potential is massive to develop. He has a profile that fits perfectly for us. He has quality in the box and he’s a striker that likes to fight and work for the team. That is perfect for us. We are very happy and excited that he has joined us. His human profile is perfect for the team, we always care about that. In general, he’s a player that fits the team.”

Pochettino is a firm believer in the 4-2-3-1 formation, so initially at least, it would be somewhat surprising if Janssen forces his way into the Argentine’s first-choice starting XI. The Dutch international scored all of his goals last season from inside the box, highlighting the fact he’s very much a traditional “number 9,” with predatory instincts that are particularly impressive for such a young player.

Last season, Janssen averaged a shot every 18.1 minutes, which was a better rate than any forward in the Premier League last term and superior to Kane’s 22.1 minutes. While predominantly left footed, Janssen is a composed finisher with either foot, and has clever movement in the box. Although he’s not blessed with searing pace, the former AZ front man has a good awareness, and is capable of holding off defenders with his strength.

Kane’s packed schedule over the last 18 months is also a factor. The only forward to start all 38 league matches last season, the England international – who has been named in the first XI in 56 successive top-flight matches – has also spent his last two summers representing England in the 2015 UEFA European Under 21 Championship and at Euro 2016.

Indeed, although Kane ultimately ended the previous Premier League campaign as top scorer with 25 goals, he struggled at the start of the season and scored just once in the opening nine Gameweeks, suggesting he suffered some fatigue from his international exertions. Initially then, we may see Pochettino using Janssen to help ease the burden, perhaps as a substitute late in matches to help the Dutchman settle into life in the Premier League.

There has often been a suggestion that Kane could drop back into a slightly deeper role given his strong ability to link the play, though, so should Janssen find his feet quickly, it’s something that can’t be fully ruled out. That would, of course, dent Dele Alli’s Fantasy prospects, with the former MK Dons player perhaps having to operate in a slightly deeper midfield spot if Kane moved into the support role.

It’s perhaps unlikely but such a scenario would certainly boost the appeal of Christian Eriksen, who finished fifth last season among midfielders who made 15 or more appearances for total shots (one every 30.7 minutes), while the Dane was fourth among midfielders for chances created (one every 26.9 minutes).

Given Janssen’s goal scoring record last term, albeit from his only season of top-flight football, it’s likely the Dutch international will be handed a price tag of around 9.0 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). With plenty of uncertainty surrounding his initial pitch time, few Fantasy managers are expected to invest in the striker from the off. Nonetheless, his addition to the Spurs squad allows Pochettino to manage Kane’s minutes a little, particularly when the Champions League group stages start in September.

Handed a schedule that sees them face just two of last term’s top eight in the first nine Gameweeks, Tottenham’s attack looks likely to catch the eye of FPL managers from the offset. Kane remains the most appealing pick, though Eriksen and Alli – price dependent – will also be in the mix when we assemble our 15-man squads.

For now, Janssen is best monitoring, then, though Pochettino’s team sheets through the final pre-season friendlies should hopefully lend some insight into his thinking. If the new boy can quickly acclimatise and force his way into the first XI, he could be another one to consider as a route into an attack that produced more attempts on goal than any other over the 2015/16 campaign.

                And probably FPL wise too.

Can't say how Calleri would do. Barley know the name. Not a great scoring record though, and the least proven by a huge margin, so on that basis he's the last I would put my money on FPL wise at least.

I don't think people are writing him off - just waiting for the right time. It's just that he hasn't had a rest in nearly 2 seasons worth of football. And that showed at the Euro's. Also has CL, and his buddy Dembele is missing the start.

How many assists has Dembele actually provided for Kane? Mere concidence imo. Kane to score v Everton GW1, v Palace GW2 and oust Ibra in any template team that will create itself

That doesn't matter. Have you seen Kane's performances when Dembele is and isn't on the pitch? He is a real engine in that midfield, very underrated player who I rate very highly. No one can play his role in that squad and it seriously affects Kane.

It isn't a coincidence. Kane scoring when Dembele on field doesn't directly mean that Dembele has been providing those assists.

Many on here, including myself, noted last season that Kane's average position with and without Dembele were very different.

When Dembele was on the pitch, Kane used to be further forward, without him though, Kane was given duties to fall deep to pick up passes and then move forward from there.

                        May 3rd:
"For example, the contrast in results when Pochettino is without his key men is alarming. With Mousa Dembele and Dele Alli together in the team so far this season, Spurs are unbeaten in the Premier League - winning 16 of those 20 games and drawing the other four.

However, when one of the pair has been missing it's been a very different story with only five of those 16 matches having been won and four of them lost. Without Dembele alone it's grim reading with Spurs having lost three of the last five that the Belgian has missed."

Always thought the same. If Dembele is playing the no 10 role and laying goals on a plate for Kane i'd agree he's a miss but he's cm/dm. Sheer coincidence although a team with Dembele in is better than one without

I don't see it being a direct link to kane's goal output, put it that way. Loads think differently which is fair enough but i don't go for it

That's like saying he's only dependant of the guy providing him the assists.

One other thought - when Dembele wasn't playing earlier on last season, wasn't Alli then in his position as opposed to no 10?

I'd say he's more dependent on the likes of alli and eriksen for sure. I rate Dembele - seems to go unnoticed a lot in the media but he's superb whenever i see him. I just don't go along with the no Dembele no goals theory. Stats may prove otherwise but i'd always buy Kane in FPL (at the right price) whether Dembele's in the team or not

I think everyone has 'go to' players that they'll always prefer to get. Many will always go for Aguero or say Payet as a midfielder. Last 2 seasons Kane has been in mine more than anyone else i'd guess

True, he goes unnoticed. But he is brilliant with his dribbles and passing rates, creating more room for the likes of Eriksen and Alli who are more directly linked up with Kane. Without having any evidence I'm pretty sure Kane's goal tally is higher with Dembele than without. (I could find out, but meh...)

Would pick Firmino personally, I've never rated Coutinho as an fpl asset.

Surprised to see the lack of Eriksen love here. Alli/Kane expected to be tired after the Euros, while he had the full summer off. On all set pieces (excluding penalties) , and was the midfielder with the most shots in the 2015/16 season.

eve CPL LIV sto SUN mid to begin with is a pretty decent start too. Am I missing something?

I dunno about anybody else but Eriksen is nailed in my team if he's 9.0 or less.

I'm expecting to pay 8.5 for him. Won't buy him if priced higher I don't think.

I'm hoping for 8.5 as well but would go as high as 9.0. That's still likely to be at least 2m cheaper than Kane.

Eriksen worked wonders for me last season. Been considering him for GW1 squad too. Alli's yellow cards might just lean me to Eriksen

The downside of Eriksen is that he gets these sporadic hauls which keeps you ticking, when you probably need to sell him.

Eriksen is in my team (pending price) likely to be the main manage could even get a penalty with Kane having a rest at the start.

Spurs despite db are a worry

Coutinho was the one with most shots wasn't he?

Eriksen gives hauls for like 2 games in a row, 3 if your lucky, and then poof! nothing for like 7 games after it, won't be going anywhere near him.

I rated Eriksen last year (and the year before despite not being on here) and didn't get much love.

That said, the advice was good - and I'd agree. Never drop but never captain.

Seems like Diego Costa is returning to Atletico. What a team they are...

Batshuayi looks more and more appealing.

Could this mean Batshuayi and Hazard upfront (if Conte plays his preferred 2 uptop)?

Big fan on Michy. Could hit the ground running, be interesting to see his price. I don't think FPL Towers would be aware of Diego Costa news.

Really really really hope Costa leaves Chelsea after the GW1 deadline. 😀

But that's probably too much asked. 🙁 If he only leaves after the FPL opens, then the problem is that everybody and his dog starts with Michy as he'd be a known sub 8.0 Chelsea starting striker. In that case I might wish Costa left before the game opened so that Michy would be adequately priced.

Bat shouldn't cost more than 9.5m imo. That's how much a "proven" Soldado cost at the time he was Spain's main striker

This the TV deal from the season coming, last year on the old deal, Leicester got ~£95m & Villa got ~£65m

Still big money, but not quite as ludicrous as awarding Villa 9 figures.

More importantly I'm giving my ankle a try out in a game of 5 a side tomorrow.

Takes a little getting used to but lace up ankle braces are your friend. Been wearing them over 25 years because of broken ankles and multiple ligament injuries. I'm 47 now and play multiple times a week with no ankle issues.

I don't fancy any picks from Pool. All I can see is rotation from a manager who seems to like...well...rotation. I think he showed his colours last season.

Wijnaldum might complicate things more if it means Firmino goes up top.

I would like a Liverpool attacker BF but there's just no way of knowing who to pick.
Even if the answer is Firmino, there's the likes of Eriksen Mkhitaryan, Barkley, for around the same price

every team has this problem, it's not like other teams have 2 strikers they play every week.

Sturridge will be first choice with Origi second, Firm can go up top too and Ings will prob play in the cups.

Harry Kane absolutely fell out of the stalls last season but still ended up top goalscorer with 25 goals. Assuming he isn't afflicted with Third Season Syndrome this time, surely he has a chance of netting 30?

He started slow last season, surely it's wiser to wait and see how he and Spurs start the season before getting him in the team.
He's definitely one to watch closely, but surely not a first striker option from the very start.

For some reason I'm not convinced that Sturridge is first choice. He should be but Klopp preferred Origi or even Firmino in some of the big games last season.

we had a lot of games in a short space of time and unlike BR Klopp knows how to handle Sturridge and keep him fit. He won't play every game but barring a serious injury I would say he plays 25/30 PL games and should score about 20 goals

What is the maximum you guys are ready to invest on Vardy?
I'm thinking 8.5M but it will more likely be 9.5M-10M right?

Vardy and Mahrez to no longer offer value for money, however a defender is still very much appealing.

3 CS in their first 5 looks pretty realistic, the LCFC of last season would certainly be able to acieve that.

I'm ready to part company with Maherz having own him for 38 gw last season but somehow Vardy still feels value for money.. team season wander probably. Very good player most definitely

Impossible to say that Vardy is value for money without prices out yet.

What do you guys think of Viktor Fischer (Middlesbrough's new signing) as a cheap midfielder option?

Middlesbough have a great run of fixtures at the beginning:
Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Fischer scored 10 goals before christmas last season (albeit in the Eredivisie) and is a midfielder who plays more like a striker and was touted to be the next big thing before he sustained a 14 month injury 2 years ago.

I am very tempted by him, as I can't see many midfield options with good fixtures other than city and chelsea at this point in time.

What are the thoughts on Silva this year...ignoring the fact that he a had a stinker last year due to injuries.

I've wrote a few times on here that Prince Silva has for a few years been a bit of an oddity in his style of play in the prem, although that's made him a perfect fit for Aguero. To my mind, as stated previously, he was the one footballer who was made for Barcelona in the days of the Xavi, Inniesta, Messi pomp...he was the perfect fit for them and I was amazed he didn't end up there.

Will Pep build on his style of play given his past management or did he change his style at Bayern ?

                              I'm hoping for that.

I'm sure FPL pay some mind to affordability across the game...so to that end he may well be one to drop a tad. Remember the 8.5 Arsenal mids last year?...that took us all by surprise.

And they must be aware of so many wanting to go for KDB & Aguero ..so would be good to give silva as a cheaper alternative to mix things up a little

KDB is a great player and no doubt but it's still Silva and Aguero who have the best understanding of any Duet in the prem...and by a distance. Sadly injuries are against them but i'm certain that given an injury free run Silva can still top KDB for pts...or at least match him. He could be 2.0mill cheaper.

This is the first season Leicester have qualified for UCL and probably aren't going to again this season. As for Chelsea, it's in fact the opposite.

Giving up CL for money sounds lame tbh.

I think Leicester have to accept that some players are gonna want to move on, just like it was at my club Blackburn..

Also according to Marotta, Juve is not going to pay Higuain's release clause, which is what Napoli ask them to pay. So, at least there's one rival less for his signature if that situation remains the same.

If Juve won't pay then I doubt super tight Arsenal will

You'ed think Juve deal must be tied a little to if they are to get a load of cash for Pogba

They apparently want Higuain to replace Morata, without having to sell Pogba. They're selling a whole a lot of other players.

Anyway, the point is that the price is rumoured to be lower for Arsenal who are not direct rivals. 😉

That said, De Laurentiis said that they have no intention to sell him, so probably any buyer candidate has to trigger the clause.

That way, at his age, Higuain is probably stuck at Napoli. Not a bad deal anyway.

The release clause is €94m. Arsenal won't pay that but Napoli would negotiate with them if Higuain asks to leave. They're not willing to negotiate with Juve because they're rivals.

We don't need to sell Pogba to fund Higuain. Morata brought us €30m and Zaza is expected to bring €25-30m if he leaves. Pereyra will be €15-18m as well.

That being said I can't see the deal going through. I expect us to settle for a cheaper more realistic target like Gabriel Barbosa.

Are Tottenham's fixtures good enough to consider Eriksen? I am struggling to find enough good midfield options (have KDB and Mkh as definites), and so am having to rock a 5 at the back atm.

Hit me with your best midfield options (any price) and why...

Ramsey , fancy him to have a good year ...Although no set pieces , may be rested and where he plays is not decided ...I think he plays the right of an attacking 3 that's a bit fluid

4.0 not nailed, 10.5 was better last season, 5.5 injury risk, 4.5 and 4.5 don't rotate well. Like the 7.0 pick as long as he keeps set pieces.

4.0 can become 3.9 or 3.8 if you do an iffy 4.0 pick. The 4.0 should be a very low ownership player, with no risk of falling, who is a place holder for the first "Simpson" to emerge...and they will.....
