On a busy transfer deadline day, we bring the curtain down on Gameweek 3, pondering the prospects of City’s renaissance man, whilst surveying the options in the light of yesterday’s FA bombshell.

The Player

Alexis Sanchez deserves a mention but, for his continued ascent under Pep Guardiola, we have to doff our caps to Raheem Sterling.

Having simmered with a pair of assists in his opening two Gameweeks, Sterling’s contribution in Sunday’s win over West Ham United was emphatic.

An extra yard of pace, a renewed willingness to take on his defender – Sterling was already rekindling past performances from his bygone Liverpool days.

Now with two goals to his name, the City wide man will surely be flowing with confidence ahead of the biggest stage of all – a Manchester derby.

We should have reservations when discussing what is still a developing talent.

Sterling can go missing, he could quickly swing back to mediocrity but the underlying numbers and the role he’s playing in Guardiola’s system certainly provide room for optimism.

Now priced at 8.2 and rising, Sterling’s form is out of the bag and the masses have caught on.

Experienced heads may resist being turned by a unpredictable talent, but Sterling appears to be key component of Guardiola’s plans and in a fluid attacking system, is producing statistics to rival even the top bracket strikers.

The Team

After picking up one point in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal finally found their mojo with a 3-1 destruction of Watford on Saturday.

Alexis Sanchez’ 16-point return, courtesy of a goal and two assists, served a timely reminder of his talents as the Gunners prepare for an inviting run of fixtures that will surely invite investment.

Mesut Ozil also notched at Vicarage Road and looks the likeliest to rival Sanchez for our affections. His consistency on his way to a 19 assist return last season is still fresh in our memory – he’s the plodding Fantasy talent to Sanchez’ explosive but unpredictable returns.

In a season where new grappling laws have already boosted the number of spot-kicks, Santi Cazorla – as evidenced on Saturday – may also emerge as a viable option if, as expected, he cements his start.

Then we’ve got the impact of new signing Lucas Perez to consider – a potentially intriguing option as an 8.5 forward.

Suddenly the Arsenal attack is alive.

At the back, there’s also room for optimism, with fellow new boy Shkodran Mustafi expected to shore up an uncertain and unsettled rearguard.

We remain sceptical on their title credentials given the strength of the opposition gathering, but Wenger’s side are certainly back on the radar as a source of Fantasy talent.

That begins in Gameweek 4, where Sanchez and Ozil present viable captain options.

The Talking Point

Whilst deadline day is a major distraction, news of Sergio Aguero’s FA charge for an “alleged” act of violent conduct is still sinking in.

It seems likely that the charge will be upheld and that Aguero will accepted a three-match ban which will see him sit out the Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 Etithad clash with Bournemouth.

His 51% ownership must now consider their options.

Benching Aguero over the next two Gameweeks is one route available, but having his funds in reserve is surely debilitating when there will be those re-investing his millions back into their squads.

In addition, Aguero’s price will likely drop, possibly by 0.3 or more by the time he returns for Gameweek 6. By benching him, we would be turning down an easy route to making perhaps 0.2 in funds; even that little could prove precious over the season.

The Wildcard looks the way to go. Without it we can swap out the Argentine but we can’t maximise the funds he liberates without a second free transfer or by taking a points hit.

With a Wildcard active, Aguero’s cash can be used to perhaps land Diego Costa or Romelu Lukaku, with change available to upgrade a mid-price midfielder to either Sanchez or Ozil.

That’s an intoxicating possibility that’s hard to resist which perhaps also offers up a new Gameweek 4 captaincy option.

The only danger is that we will get used to having Aguero’s funds distributed throughout our squads, paving the way for us to start questioning re-acquiring the Argentine for Gameweek 6.

Tricky one but B for me. Lukaku has no form but with those fixtures surely he'll score soon?

Might be worth waiting to see whether Everton sign another striker today as they've been heavily linked to do so

B easily (Costa never gets bonus, and scores one goal, then yellow card so he's gonna net you 4-5 points pr game... and not sold on Barkley...atleast not vs Sterling)

I was wondering if anyone has seen much of Ibra in big games before and has any knowledge on how he performs?

In the next 6 he has City, Liverpool and Chelsea as well as a fairly solid Leciester so tricky ties if he struggles in the bigger match-ups.

    1. Vlad

Ibra has scored to all clubs in Italy serie A, to all clubs in France (but Psg ofc), and in the season he played in Spain he has scored in el Classico to real.
He is the 5th or 6th CL scorer in history.
Ibro can score anytime to anybody.

Ofc better teams defend better. From those mentioned I only see Chelsea as a tough game and city ofc. He already scored to Leicester and pool defense .. Hmm.. They can just take goals from any side.

Thoughts on Milik, Pompeyfan? Is there optimism in Amsterdam after selling him for such a huge ammount of money? And did his loss affect the team in a bad way (such as the 1-4 defeat against Rostov) or are there other factors?

      1. pompeyfan
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

pretty much everyone is delighted to have sold Milik for so much. €15m would've been a fair fee so to get more than double that is great. He was never going to be the answer.

The season has started off terribly, mainly because we haven't had enough creativity in the middle. This should now be fixed by signing Ziyech. It is also difficult having so many new players to gel in the team; Sanchez, Casseira, Dohlberg & Traore. They've all looked good but it takes time. Cillessen didn't help with giving away away goals in both rounds of CL qualifying, but thankfully he's also gone now.

Hopefully things improve now, and we can make a go of the EL and challenge all the way in the league

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

To be honest, I am happy for Milik, he seems to fit well in the Napoli system - looked better than in the few Ajax games I saw last season.

The 1-4 defeat to Rostov came to me as a huge suprise and I was wondering what happened, hopefully Ziyech can be the answer - fantastic signing, no doubt. You are probably right that they need time, especially with a new manager and with star players being sold in the summer. Good luck in the EL and in the league 🙂

I guess most fans are just very conservative in their thinking on what sides are good and what sides are bad, and if they never heard of a side before then they assume that the side must be bad. Rostov left Zenith with their millions and administrative power without the Champions League football, things like this don't happen out of luck.

Then use WC to get Aguero back in later. You would also want Liverpool coverage in attack form gw6.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

I asked whether people were wildcarding last week, back in the days when Aguero wasn't set to miss two games, Andre Gray's old tweets were still secret and Arsenal midfielders were quiet.

But should both be suspended for a few games, and given Arsenal's kind run and immediate strong form - who now is thinking of wildcarding?

If so what key players are you bringing in? Who is leaving? And are there any 4.0 ish player left to add in?

The trouble with a pre Jan 1 wildcard deadline is that good team management means you are unlikely to need it from October onwards. Last year I used mine early and honestly didn't once wish for another until the DGWKs came along. Also the guy that won it didn't even use his pre xmas wildcard.

I think this or the next international break are the best times to take advantage of price rises and ditch obvious under performers.

Fair enough, but every season is different and I'd rather have my WC in my pocket in case a real crisis happens and everyone else will be struggling rather than a rigid WC timing strategy - luckily I already have Sanchez and no massive under-performers/non-starters at the moment, so no real need to WC atm 🙂

The problem this season is that a lot of teams have just added first team players. So we don't really have a good sense for lineups and form. Makes sense to wait until the next international break in my view, unless forced

I am contemplating it, but would ideally like to just sell Aguero now and wildcard him back in later. The problem with this though, is that a lot of my players are one more bad game away from dropping in value. Ibe, Tadic, Friend, Pieters, Firmino are all players on their way down, and players I might get rid of in WC. So, maybe wildcarding now, saving FT gw5 and using 2 transfers (or maybe 3) for gw6 in getting Aguero back in is the best plan.

Nope.. Have used 2FTs on Martial + Aguero -> Ozil + Ibra..

Have a few possible dodgy players now - Bojan, Walcott, Amat, Jaku but hoping I can survive, monitor them and get them out over the weeks if needed

if I was wildcarding I'd want Sanchez, Benteke, Williams, some kind of 4.0 ish player

Optional extras would be Sterling and one of Costa or Lukaku. Defoe also appeals.

Punts would include my old favourites Josh King or Jason Puncheon.

Out for me would go Aguero, Tadic, Stones, Heaton - if Pickford is still number one, Gray and probably Ramirez - I see rotation in his future and Middlesbrough are not creating anywhere near the chances I'd like to see.

Either save two transfers or take a hit. Key though is have some kind of route back so basically two players - one forward - one somewhere else that can turn into Aguero and a viable other.

So for example Benteke and Sanchez could become Aguero and a 5.5 mid....if you wanted to get Aguero back.

A good wildcard needs to have the flexibility to ensure the squad can cope with getting Aguero back in for no more than one hit.

Yeah, I prefer taking -4 now and WC Kun in later. Thinks can change a lot in 2 weeks.

On the point of Ramirez, Jonty, look out for Ramirez' performance against Palace at home in GW4. So far this season we've played two away and one home; the home game he was excellent against Stoke and the two away games he looked tidy but stifled.

Due to Karanka's pragmatic approach away from home, we may see Ramirez become a bit of a homer in terms of FF points.

If our squad remains as it is, then there is no risk of rotation in the short to medium term in my opinion. Fischer and Adama Traore could change this long term, once they have bedded in, but we just don't have the quality in the three attacking areas behind the striker to not play Ramirez at the moment and Downing's work on the left in proving extremely important to our shape at the moment for him to be moved central.

Bringing in one of Sanchez / Ozil, Hazard, Benteke, an Everton defender... list goes on and on really!

I activated the WC on Saturday. Had too many risks of price drops (Payet, Tadic, Vardy) and wanted to jump on the bandwagons (Hazard, Sterling) to hopefully gain some funds. I may actually go back to some of the players I shipped off if they drop in value!

I'm looking to bring in Sanchez, Williams, an Arsenal defender. Up front there are some intriguing options, I'm very tempted by Wilfried Bony if he does move to Stoke.

I've built my initial team for first 3 gameweeks, being sure I will use my WC during 1st international brake. No better moment for first WC, imo... Transfer window shutting, most of squads settled, form starting to shape up and 2 weeks to tinker around your team. Lots of ingredients for a good WC

Fairly set on taking a hit, and bring him back later, not WC'ing now unless more injuries during international break. Key questions are

      - Özil + Lukaku/Costa or Sanchez + Benteke/Zaza/Defoe
      - Ship Lamela or Redmond in addition to Kun

I'm pretty set on waiting till at least GW8 to bring him back in, Sanchez/Özil/Lukaku or Ibra as captains in the meantime

      Walker* | Stones* | Shaw | McAuley | Amat
      Snodgrass* | Redmond | Hazard | Mahrez | Capoue
      Ageuro* | Gray* | Ibra

Blinking annoying as I'd saved 2 FT's to do Eriksen & Oscar out to get Hazard in. With Eriksen, Kun, Gray, Stones all likely to drop plus doubts over Townsend and Firmino I may have no choice!

If Gray escapes punishment I may get Haz for Oscar and Vardy in for Kun then wildcard Kun back...

    Hazard – Barkley – Tadic – Ramirez
    Aguero – Ibra – Gray

    Jakupovic – Capoue – Shaw - Amat

    1 FT

    What should I do:
    A. Aguero ➡ D.Costa
    B. Aguero ➡ Lukaku
    C. Tadic + Aguero ➡ Sanchez + D.Costa (-4)
    D. Tadic + Aguero ➡ Sanchez + Lukaku (-4)

so, if lukaku is 9.0, and likely not on penalties (thou you never know with baines), and bony is 7.3, likely on penalties, why not bony?
beautiful run of fixtures after next game...

Lukaku is a known (albeit streaky) quantity at Everton. Who knows how Bony will settle.

It looks like an even bigger gamble.
      Though don't doubt Bonys potential.

    Play WC?

    Jaku, Foster
    Valencia, Walker, Friend, Kone, Amat
    Townsend, Tadic, Hazard, Fletcher, Barkley
    Gray, Kun, Ibra

    I think I will

30 gw without wc thats a huge no-no. but you would have hard time to pick anyone without doubling or playing poker, double eve cpl or che, and bring in ozil/sanchez for kun and 2/3/4th mid
