Sturridge and Oxlade-Chamberlain both score twice while Hull City hold on in an entertaining night of EFL Cup action, offering us valuable clues on the Gameweek 10 teamsheets. Here’s how three Premier League teams booked their quarter-final spots.

Liverpool 2 Tottenham 1

After using no out-and-out strikers for much of the campaign, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp went with two against Spurs, and Daniel Sturridge (9.9) took the chance to double his goalscoring returns for the season, with all four of his strikes coming in the EFL Cup.

The England international scored either side of the break, from assists by Marko Grujic (4.5) and Georginio Wijnaldum (7.6). Spurs rallied late on after Vincent Janssen (7.8) converted a penalty following a Lucas (4.4) foul on substitute Erik Lamela (6.8), but the Reds were good value for the win.

Klopp made 11 changes to his weekend team, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino opted for 10, and in many ways the match mirrored Liverpool’s win over West Brom. They dominated, went 2-0 up, failed to kill their opponents off and had to endure a nervy end to proceedings after conceding against the run of play.

With Divock Origi (6.6) also starting and Danny Ings (5.5) given a run-out when the young Belgian was beset by cramp, it afforded Anfield a rare sighting of all three Liverpool strikers in action.

Klopp’s post-match praise for Sturridge, however, was notable for its absence of any suggestion that the forward was much closer to a regular starting berth in the league.

“That’s his talent, that’s his strength. He’s a finisher, he’s a really good striker, there’s no doubt about this. I was never in doubt about this, even when he didn’t score. That’s not in question.”

Despite his goals, then, Sturridge will surely be handed a bench role for the visit to Crystal Palace at the weekend, with Klopp again opting to start Roberto Firmino in the central attacking role. Wijnaldum got 90 minutes and is now in a position to push Emre Can for his start but, again, Klopp would seem likely to stick the side that won the points against West Brom last time out.

As for Spurs, Pochettino’s decision to start with Trippier and Davies would suggest that both Kyle Walker and Danny Rose will line up for the visit of Leicester City in Gameweek 10. Janssen’s start last night would also hint that Son Heung-min (7.7) will be given another opportunity to lead the attack, despite being replaced on the hour mark after a disappointing display against Bournemouth.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold (Clyne 68), Lucas, Klavan, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Stewart, Ejaria, Grujic (Can 89), Sturridge, Origi (Ings 68).
Subs not used: Karius, Lovren, Mane, Lallana.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Vorm, Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wimmer, Davies, Dier (Wanyama 67), Winks, Onomah, Carroll (Lamela 61), Nkoudou (Harrison 84), Janssen.
Subs not used: Vertonghen, Lopez-Sabata, Walkes, Amos.

Arsenal 2 Reading 0

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s (5.8) brace confirmed Arsenal’s superiority over their spirited Championship opponents.

The midfielder scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season – already his best-ever return for the Gunners before October is even complete. He took advantage of a Reading mistake to open the scoring after 33 minutes and sealed the deal in the second-half from an assist by substitute Olivier Giroud (8.8).

The return to action of the French striker, who has been restricted by injuries to just 54 minutes in the league this season, was a boost to coach Arsene Wenger’s forward options. Less pleasing was the performance of fellow striker Lucas Perez (7.9), who looked lacklustre before being replaced by Giroud.

Wenger’s defensive depth was also strengthened by Carl Jenkinson’s (5.0) first start following a nine-month knee injury lay-off. With Mathieu Debuchy (4.7) out of favour, Jenkinson is likely to provide much-needed cover for Hector Bellerin (6.6) at right back.

But the night belonged to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who received lavish post-match praise from Wenger.

“He’s powerful but he also finishes well and he’s added that to his game. That’s certainly linked with confidence, hard work in training, and he looks to be following Theo Walcott in that way. He’s not a long way away from the starting XI…I feel that he is regularly involved.”

The 23-year-old does, however, face a difficult task finding his way into the Arsenal starting XI given that Wenger will also have to accommodate the talents of Aaron Ramsey. In addition, with Giroud and Perez pushing for a central attacking role, Alexis Sanchez may eventually be considered for a shift back to the flank, further reducing Oxlade-Chamberlain’s opportunities.

Elsewhere, Alex Iwobi’s 90 minutes is a little troubling – he has started the last five Premier League outings, which may suggest that his role could be under threat for the visit to Sunderland this weekend.

Arsenal XI: Martinez, Jenkinson, Gabriel, Holding, Gibbs, Elneny, Maitland-Niles, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Zelalem 80), Iwobi, Reine-Adelaide (Giroud 66), Perez (Willock 72).
Subs not used: Macey, Bielik, Bola, Sheaf.

Bristol City 1 Hull City 2

Hull City avoided a fifth straight defeat by the skin of their teeth in a nervy win over Championship opponents.

Record signing Ryan Mason’s (4.9) set-play deliveries proved to be the difference, with two of his corners headed home by Harry Maguire (4.4) and then Michael Dawson (4.4).

But the Tigers were out-shot 19-11 by their hosts, and only a last-gasp clearance on the line saved Hull from extra-time in a thrilling finale.

Boss Mike Phelan went with a 3-5-2 system and made six changes to his team, including starts for left wing-back Josh Tymon (4.0) and strikers Abel Hernandez (6.0) and Adama Diomande (4.6).

Leading FPL points-scorer Robert Snodgrass (5.7) didn’t travel as he faces up to four weeks out with an ankle injury.

The result was welcome, but the performance doesn’t augur well as Hull face up to a trip to a newly-resolute Watford and then a home match with the in-form Southampton ahead of the November international break.

Hull XI: Jakupovic, Maguire, Dawson, Davies, Elmohamady, Livermore, Mason (Huddlestone 79), Tymon, Henriksen, Diomande, Hernandez (Meyler 89).
Subs not used: Kuciak, Clucas, Maloney, Weir, Bowen.

Leaves me with about 13M for 3 defenders. Some sort of wildcard like this in 5 weeks with maybe Slimani/Mahrez/Siggy thrown in somewhere.

    Thoughts?

    Choose GW11 onwards:

    A) KDB
    B) Hazard

KDB has the better fixtures but too much rotation at city and he's looks a bit injury prone if over played.

Hazard is in form and is playing more centrally but fixtures are a bit tough. He also only seems to score points in home matches, he has 5 home fixtures up till GW19.

I can also keep KDB as a placeholder for Hazard till fixtures get better is that worth it?

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Double Digit kings

When looking for a captain ideally you want a candidate that has the strongest chance of gaining a double digit score.

With nine Gameweeks gone I thought I’d take a look at those that have already racked up at least two double digit scores.

    Forwards.

Just four have achieved two double digit hauls.

    Costa, Lukaku, Aguero, Austin.

This says to me that a player like Austin, against a weak side, offers a great a chance of a double digit pts haul and arguably should be considered as a captain more often. Gameweek 11 away to Hull for example looks a good Gameweek to captain him. Lukaku too in Gameweek 10 is arguably a great pick. But with just 4 pts for a goal wouldn’t it be better to consider midfielders more often.

Let’s have a look at how they did in terms of double digit hauls….

    Midfielders

With six achieving double digit returns on three occasions it is clear the odds are stacked in favour of a midfield captain.

    Here are those six

Sanchez, Coutinho, KDB, Milner, Chadli and Capoue.

Of these Chadli looks a good armband option during an easy home game. Sanchez, KDB and Coutinho are also strong options.

KDB is particularly interesting as if you don’t want to captain Aguero, and are even considering ditching the Argentine, then the Belgian could be a great route to captaincy hauls when Man City have a kind fixture.

Personally I’d discount Milner and Capoue as captaincy options. Milner relies on penalties in the main and Capoue profited early on from an unsustainable goal to shot ratio.

Meanwhile, there are a further 12 other midfielders who also offer strong captaincy shouts with two double digit hauls this season.

These are Walcott, Hazard, Sterling, Antonio, Son, Firmino, Mane, Lallana, Ozil, Allen, Stanislas and Payet.

This shows that captaining the likes of Allen may not seem as off the wall as it first appears, especially when Stoke have an easy game.

    Conclusion

Midfielders are far more likely to bring in a captaincy haul. On current form Sanchez, KDB and Coutinho look the best bets. Although Walcott's stronger underlying stats compared to Sanchez may soon swing the balance of power in his favour.

Worth mentioning that only one defender has returned a double digit return twice – Koscielny.

A midfield with Coutinho, Sanchez, KDB and Chadli could offer sensational returns and four great captaincy picks across the Gameweeks. To achieve this though it could mean jettisoning Aguero.

Ya i get the whole additional point for cleansheet and scoring but generally i'm just more comfortable captaining a forward.

I guess its because they are more likely to score atleast 1. Its purely psychological.

Going for different captaincy options with the likes of Aguero and even Sanchez misfiring in recent gameweeks has proved a shrewd move for many so far. With an easy home game for example those mentioned above have already proved themselves.

Maybe, but Stoke's too unpredictable for my liking.

Someone like Ighalo(if Success is out) or Fatso Deeney this week vs Hull could be a masterstroke though. Or Defoe vs Hull in GW 12.

Yep it's always a great idea to look for a punt when there is no standout option. This week could be one of those. I went Walcott for his 2GW's ago.

But Joe Allen? C'mon. I personally don't think he is even 4th mid material. A good fifth mid yes but that's about it.

That he has two double digit returns this season - the same as Walcott, Hazard, Sterlin, Son, Firmino, Mane, Ozil and Payet - all of which people are happy to captain.

In addition if you had membership you'd see that his underlying stats are sustainable - unlike Capoue.

And now you're putting his name up there with the likes of Hazard and Payet 😯
There is a reason Allen is priced at 5mil this season, look at his history.

I don't need a membership to see his underlying stats. The reason I never got Capoue was due to poor stats. Allen's stats are ok but nothing great.

      Your theory isn't to good.
Check how many times players like Austin (Deeney, Benteke etc) failed to score against weak side and how many times mids like Chadli (lots of themy) failed. Also I wouldnt say that "midfield with Coutinho, Sanchez, KDB and Chadli could offer sensational returns" as it would effect on rest of the squad.

The article says that it is worth considering those players. It also points out that Sanchez, Coutinho and KDB have been strong captaincy picks.

All I'm doing is opening up the discussion. How you interpret that is up the each. Some will want to take more risks and go for different captains. some will want to play it safe.

Also that midfield basically comes down to Aguero v KDB.

Many can quite happily have a great team with Coutinho, Sanchez, Chadli (or equiv mid price option) plus one of Aguero/KDB.

Well, I Sánchez was my captain against both Burnley and Middlesbrough, and he didn’t score against any of those teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if he fails to score against Sunderland this weekend.

Any player can fail to score against a weak side.

should be pimping chadli but a bit torn on him. his score against spurs for example was everything falling into place perfectly, 1 chance and thankfully he took it. barely got a touch so couldn't create anything either. then the score finished 1-1, basically the only scorline he could get 2-3 baps with just 26bps (same as the sunderland game). then his monster score was 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 shots and 2 key passes i seem to recall.
he's definitely good value, but also feel he's getting dealt some very good cards so far. saying that one of the reasons to get him (the counter-argument to him playing for west brom) was goals would so often come with bonus due to a lack of competition from his teammates

His stats aren't amazing, but as Jonty was talking about on the Scoutcast, his goal involvement is high. That was my thinking with getting him in, anyway; West Brom don't score many historically, but when they do score, there's a good chance Chadli will be involved.

I agree with this, but there's always a fine line between identifying the good finishers and the lucky runs. Personally I feel Chadli is more in the clinical category looking at his points per minute record at spurs, but there will be others that know him better than me as I've hardly seen him. But there's no way I'm getting a west brom forward until their fixtures turn, let alone would I consider the armband.

Jonty, just watched the scoutcast and found a bit of a hole in your finding's about Aguero and his stats galling off, granted they have but you failed to tie it in to the most important fact in that so have City, no wins on 4 or 5, 2 goals scored in the last 3, do you not think they go hand in hand?

When City were flying at the start of the season Aguero was flying with 10 goals in 5 and several shots, now the whole team has stalled Aguero has stalled but then so has Sterling, why was this not brought up? Seems a bit short sighted to just point at Aguero's lack of former while ignoring City's obvious dips, are their midfielders now playing like 'bad defenders'? Strange logic.

The question you also failed to address is if you think City will continue that slump with West Brom, Boro, Palace and Burnley up next, if their productivity goes up than surely his does too as theye gone hand in hand over the first 9 games, when City do well, he does, when they struggle to score/win, he does, see a pattern?

PS. Austin C in GW11, nailed on.

Wrong thread but yes that's a good point. We have limited time on the scoutcast to go into further detail - but overall my conclusion was that Aguero's goal attempts are actually very similar - he's just being asked to do an unfamiliar role.

Its a bit chicken and the egg. Are City failing because their best striker is being asked to be someone he hasn't been for the last few yrs. Or is his failure to score to do with an overall slump.

It is highly possible that the two are linked. City fails when Aguero fails, Aguero fails when his team mates fail.

But it's not just Aguero failing, Sterling was must have a few weeks ago, he's also fallen off a cliff so the panic that Aguero has somehow lost his super powers seems a bit misleading, would be very concerned if City had won the last 4 scoring 2 or 3 a game with him having nothing but the whole team are in a sticky spot, if they bounce back at the weekend and win 3 nil than would you bet against him being involved?

To highlight his dip in output without the context of his whole teams doesn't really tell the whole story.

I do agree though that while he/they are struggling then it is a good time to try out other captaincy options like Chadli or Austin.

Even tho Hull are terrible defensively and Middlesbrough are really good defensively in recent weeks.

And even though Aguero may not even start on current evidence with CL while Austin is nailed on and in better form.

These are the questions I think we need to be asking ourselves when it comes to captaincy.

It depends how much Puel thinks of the competition but now that they lost in the San Siro, they could use a result in that match. On paper, Hull away is the match to rotate compared to Inter home

                  You're just second guessing him.

The facts/pattern have been quite clear in Europa weeks where the PL has been the priority with more of the squad being used in the Europa, no need to look any deeper into it and guess based on hunches.

That's fair enough but you only base it on a guess which is the opposite to what's been happening so it's a throw away comment.

Austin is the perfect example, when he wasn't starting in the league he was starting in the Europa, when he started in the league he started getting benched for the Europa, we can all guess wildly I guess but the evidence is all there if you want to make an educated guess.

Strongly agree that midfielders are the best captaincy options at the moment.

Gone all in the midfield this year with KDB Sanchez Coutinho Firmino and Allen, will look to get Chadli for Allen soon via a defensive downgrade.

Coutinho, Aguero, KDB and Sanchez the most reliable captains IMO.

The day I capt a WBA player is the day they cart me off to the funny farm.

      WBA goals for to date:

      1,1,0,1,4,1,1,1,1

If another member of your squad isn't a more appealing capt choice in any given gameweek then your doing something wrong and shouldn't be playing this game.

I might be going for mata(c) this week..burnley at home isnt a fixture to play out defensive minded team like the past 2 weeks. I guess mata might start this week. I love to take punts looking upon the fixtures and not the form

If someone still owns zlatan this week might be the best to captain him..

Points won in the Premier League by Man Utd this season:

When Juan Mata starts = 13 out of 15

When Juan Mata doesn't start = 1 out of 12

Nice, one of my favorite ways to look at captaincy. Any idea how I can search for the article on it from last year, consistency vs explosiveness? Am thinking of doing another one when the next international break hits. Cheers.

          An excellent article.

Double-digit scores correspond to Explosive or better in your table.
So last season, after 12 game-weeks, only Lukaku, Mahrez, Ozil, Sanchez and Coutinho had 3 or more double-digit returns.

But the Consistent column (5-9 points) could also be very useful, depending on how predictable the double-digit returns were.
The players achieving the most 5+ points returns were Vardy (11 times), Payet, Ozil and Smalling (8), Mahrez, Kompany, Kolarov and Sagna (7) and Lukaku, Ighalo, Pelle, Giroud, Tadic, Mata, Cech, Myhill and Gomez (6).

Did you do the promised follow-up article to attempt to speculate as to whether the double-digit returns could have been predicted?

Thanks for the response -- this was exactly the data gathering I was thinking about. Incredible how consistent and explosive Mahrez was in the first half of last season, or how impressive the City defenders were through 12 GWs.

I did start an article on figuring out the best predictors -- it looked at RMT, Captain poll, Fixture ticker, and underlying stats like ICT. I decided to use FFS metrics because they are accessible, fairly understandable to this community, and somewhat objective since they are not a creation of mine. It was an immense undertaking and I simply ran out of time and steam, but RMT and Fixtures did surprisingly well.

My goal for this goround will be to run the tables again like last year, and then use the Captain Sensible articles to track which of those four predictors actually have been most successful so far.

Any suggestions on more accurate or more efficient ways to go about it are always appreciated.

Did the RMT tool and Fixture Ticker appear to be actually better than the Captain Poll and the underlying stats for predicting the best captaincy choices last season then?

And for fixtures, would you choose the team playing against the weakest defence, or the team with the greatest difference between the strength of its attack and the weakness of its opponent's defence?

If I recall, as I started to check the results, RMT was pretty regularly hitting on about 6/10 getting at least a "consistent" return as we've defined it above. Captain poll was not that strong. The other challenge was just what you said -- team form as solely using the Fixture Ticker or also using some of the methodology in the Captain Sensible articles? I really liked the in-form attacks vs out of form defenses part of those articles.

I need to think more about how to track "explosiveness" or double digit hauls, but I am leaning towards someone being near the top of all the predictive indicators as maybe being judged to be ready for an explosive performance.

Just the right kind of activity for an international break.

                  Thanks, TM245.

Triggerlips is conducting a survey (The captain challenge) comparing the predictions of Bonkers the Robot, Captain Polls, Bookies Odds and Playing the Fixtures.

Most of them have about 5/9 scores of 5+ points so far this season, but Bonkers and Fixtures have the highest and lowest combined scores respectively.

I suppose Bonkers could be considered as his equivalent of our RMT tool, but 5/9 still does not sound that brilliant a success rate.

Bonkers and our RMT probably both take account of a number of different factors, but one difference between them is that Bonkers appears to take more notice than our RMT of recent FPL points and therefore rates Ibrahimovic, Aguero and Sanchez far lower than our RMT does.

Interesting and I have had Payet (C) on three occasions...
But I am gonna go against the grain a little bit this week and take a punt on Deeney (C) at home to struggling Hull. Just watched the Scoutcast and he wasn't mentioned at all but he may score big this weekend with a bit of luck!

Interesting midfield mentioned at the end. I have a similar(ish) one in mind if I jettison Aguero - Walcott, Coutinho, KDB, Hazard.

I am also thinking seriously about 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 now. The striker situation is fraught. Costa and Lukaku are fine but Costa will miss a game soon enough and Lukaku's fixtures are turning away from him. Liverpool and Arsenal effectively don't have a striker. Aguero is a big question mark. Zlatan has the stats but not the conversion and United don't look in great sorts. Vardy has the fixtures upcoming but he is off it this season. And after that you have mid-price and budget strikers who are more erratic and more dependent on fixtures.

4-4-2 or 3-5-2 with Barrow as 1st sub looks good to me. Barrow could be very useful, especially over Xmas, and the playing strikers could be 2 from Costa, Lukaku and Kane.

Also possible I guess. I like to be able to rotate players using FTs. If you have 3 or 4 options for 2 positions you can play form and fixtures. With a Costa/Kane/Lukaku front 3 you don't have anywhere obvious to go in the event of a suspension or injury.

Do we still think 352 is the way to go or is 343 more preferable?

The problem is the lack of strikers returning regular points. Costa and Lukaku are two. Aguero has past history. Not sold on Zlatan for his price. I see a lot of teams have Deeney but he has 3 goals in 9 games, hardly groundbreaking stuff.

Any three of Aguero, Costa, Lukaku and Austin seems the way to go. Not a very big pool of players to choose from.

either really, everyone will have their own unique blend of prices and fixtures facing all their options in certain weeks.
actually think the most reliable options are in defence right now making 442 a great option as well

3 big defenders from tottenham, arsenal, maybe chelsea now, man utd then rotate between 2 tiddlers rather than the 3.

Didn't realise Ayew was coming back already - that's good news.

Who knows with Mkhi. He should be on the bench at least. If he's not, I think it's fair to suspect something else may be going on behind the scenes as he's supposedly over his injury and has been training for a couple of weeks already, I believe.

Ayew is apparently back! And am very optimistic about him, potentially even starting oop

I think you're right about Mkhi, if we don't see him in the next 2 games, then the rumours about him falling out with Mourinho are obviously true. But I'm thinking now would be the perfect time to bring him in as part of a shake up in a very limp attack
