Sergio Aguero is a white knight for Fantasy Football managers, always there to salvage a dire Gameweek with his goals.

Over the last two seasons, he has amassed a total of 50 strikes in the Premier League and already has two double-digit Fantasy Premier League point hauls in this campaign.

Above all, he scored a sensational nine goals across two unforgettable Gameweek 8 fixtures in 2014/15 and 2015/16, turning our seasons on their heads.

But after averaging a mere point per match across his last three Gameweeks and with speculation surrounding Pep Guardiola’s relationship with the striker, doubts are setting in.

With this in mind we ask the Burning Question – should we even consider ignoring a fit Sergio Aguero?

Simon March (2014/15 FPL Champion) says….

My dad is playing Fantasy Football for the first time this season and, while chatting about his team last weekend, he told me he was planning on transferring Aguero out, grumbling about his recent poor scores and apparent lack of value for money.

Almost by reflex, I launched into a lengthy lecture about how Aguero is the “best player in the game”, that he’s capable of scoring five goals in a single match, and, with his ever-high ownership, it’s sometimes too dangerous to even consider not captaining Aguero, let alone not having him at all.

“Owning Aguero”, I confidently declared, “is basically the cost of entry in Fantasy Football”.

As soon as the words left my mouth, though, I was hit by the memory of having said something similar about Eden Hazard early last season.

Admittedly not without good reason, Hazard had, after all, been the top-scoring player the previous season, but, on reflection, I kept faith with him a few Gameweeks too long, all despite his obviously miserable form.

It’s true that my season didn’t really get going last year until I eventually ditched him. So I wonder now if it’s ever really sensible to declare anyone ‘untouchable’, even Aguero.

But are the situations really comparable?

Yes we’ve experienced a notable drop in returns from Aguero in recent weeks but, unlike Chelsea last season, Man City aren’t currently in the midst of an epic meltdown.

Aguero will continue to get chances and, if he gets chances, he will eventually get goals. With Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace among a few decent upcoming fixtures for City and Aguero, you have to believe that this will happen sooner rather than later.

I can’t help thinking that Aguero has, in recent weeks, encountered a ‘perfect storm’ of momentum-stalling events; form-interrupting suspension, fatigue-inducing international trips leading to inconsistent starts and a succession of fixtures against three of the best defences in the league.

His returns have dipped, but with these hurdles seemingly behind him, I’m reasonably confident that Sergio will get his groove back soon. So I’ll be keeping hold, for the time being at least.

Jonty says….

To see if Aguero’s lack of Fantasy returns is indicative of poor form or just bad luck, I thought I’d delve a little deeper into his statistics using the Members Area Comparison Tool.

For this exercise, I compared his first three matches, where he scored three times, with those three, recent dire games.

In terms of goal attempts, he’s still doing fine, averaging four a game over his recent barren spell, compared to five over the start. But here’s the key factor, just 2.7 of those were in the box in the last three matches, compared to 4.3 early on this season.

Clearly, Pep Guardiola’s instructions for Aguero to broaden his game are working, to the detriment of close range shooting.

There’s further bad news.

He’s not proficient at creating chances and providing those killer passes for team-mates to score from.

Crossing, through balls, chances created and passing are all down over the latest three matches. This is worrying as, even without that close range shooting. it doesn’t look like we will have assist potential to fall back on.

Another factor to consider is that Aguero’s slump in form could be part of a wider malaise across the City squad. This is certainly a view backed by community regular F Society among others earlier in the week.

City and Aguero may well see an upturn in form, which offers hope to his owners. The Argentine’s accuracy is another cause for optimism.

Over the last three matches, half his shots have been on target, compared to just a third during those first three lucrative games.

But for 13 million, we don’t want doubts and questions marks, particularly when Harry Kane is due to return for Spurs soon with a far lower price tag.

Another blank against West Brom and I’ll be seriously considering transferring him out, focusing my City cash on Kevin De Bruyne.

Paul says…

For a number of seasons, Aguero – when fit – has been proven royalty across the Fantasy games.

So far, this year hasn’t been about his fitness.

Three sub appearances in a run of four matches would have been inconceivable during his time under Roberto Mancini or Manuel Pellegrini, yet it’s a situation we’re facing up to just two months into the Pep Guardiola era.

You can point to his unparalleled statistics over the last few years – but those were not under Guardiola.

The new manager wants a different Sergio from the one we’ve become accustomed to.

He needs his frontman to harass and press and track back to win possession from opponents. Perhaps that stray elbow into the face of Winston Reid back in Gameweek 3 was the first crack of frustration.

Yes, Aguero didn’t see red at the time and was banned retrospectively, but there’s no doubt that it was a highly unusual act from a player who has never been sent off for City.

Of course, he will continue to score when given a chance. His talent and ability to put the ball in the back of the net isn’t in question.

Perhaps, as City become more familiar with Guardiola’s approach, the Argentine will remain as essential as ever.

There is no question this recent run of team sheets needs monitoring. There’s only so much grace that nostalgia can buy you in Fantasy football, particularly for 13 million.

Mark says…

It seems strange that, having attempted to build an ill-fated strategy without Aguero last season, now I find myself attempting to build a campaign to retain his services.

There’s no doubt that this is a testing time for Aguero as a Fantasy asset.

Forget the returns and statistics for a moment; my concerns mainly surround his relationship with his manager and the role he’s being asked to play.

As I mentioned on the ScoutCast several weeks ago, Aguero’s words on Guardiola while on duty with Argentina puzzled and worried me.

Guardiola’s response on Aguero’s reaction to criticism compounded matters.

Why did such an exchange happen in the press in an age where clubs scrutinise every breath taken by managers and players. For me, the statements made were by design – loaded with intent.

Guardiola has since expressed his belief in Aguero, but I’m not entirely confident that the striker can be Pep’s player.

We know from experience and from his recent words on the Joe Hart and Claudio Bravo, that he won’t back down – there is no compromising Pep’s masterplan.

For now, I’m holding, but only because I don’t see a major benefit in taking the risk on a potential upturn in Aguero’s output.

Until Harry Kane’s return, and there’s a major improvement in fixtures for Arsenal and Spurs in defensive terms, I can’t see myself using the Aguero funds effectively.

He’s still an attacker in potential the most attacking Premier League side, and he’s still a lethal finisher who will convert opportunities that come his way. Those are facts that have convinced me to give the situation time to heal and improve.

Eventually, should my doubts remain, I will be forced to consider selling on. For now, until the concerns escalate with another couple of blanks or worrying press, I’ll be holding.

But the exit plan is already being drafted.

Right Deadzone, I need your views.

Not happy with the Saturday/Sunday article set up. I thought the Stock Check would work on Saturday night but, the fact is, I often need to sleep on things and have the clarity of Sunday morning to sort my thoughts.

Having said that, I want a Saturday article out after the matches - never really liked the Scoreboard, although I know some found it handy.

    So, I need your thoughts.

I'm thinking of re-introducing a short-sharp Knee Jerk article on Saturday evenings - or an Early Learning piece, with some first, unexpanded thoughts, to be developed the next day with Scout Notes or perhaps the Stock Check.

Or, shall I leave as it is. Currently undecided and would like some feedback. Thanks in advance.

Basically, the knee tended to focus on one issue of the day and be a bit more opinion led. It was sometimes hard to produce, due to having to reserve some time Saturday evening but, as I'm now working most Saturdays, it should be doable. Although sometimes, genuinely, no one single event springs out.

I just want to avoid waking up Sunday morning and wanting to add to the Stock Check because something has been forgotten.

maybe just the real basics of the scoreboard with a few sharp sentences to sum up each games main fantasy assets. best of both. there is usually a lot to digest on saturday nights and unless you are making very early transfers you won't need to much info at that time. best to peruse it on easy sunday mornings!

I feel that the Stock Check is very much a "knee jerk" article. Players who scored points are going up and those that didn't are going down. But then maybe if, as you say, you sleep on things and do a more considered article it might become less so.

So, I would say make the change as you suggest.

I guess it would be hard work but just a bit of 'mid gw' info would be interesting, similar to the 'tracking the veteran analysis'. For example something like average number of players still to play, captains etc.

They (or somebody?) produces the tracking the veteran articles where they look at the average ownership of players, captains etc. Something similar to that to perhaps give a feel on a Saturday night as to what sort of game week it is.

I notice a lot of people here like to post mid gw their scores and number of players left to play. I thought an article just showing the averages would be interesting.

occasionally it deteriorates to something totally unusable.

i would like busy times to be punctuated with lots and lots of real hottopics, not just one or 2.

I like he knee jerk, captures what we may all be thinking or feeling at the time, can help team planning earlier or at least help raise questions we haven't considered backed with a little fact and few stats. Scoreboard is redundant now FPL do it themselves better. Less in depth than a stock check or meatier articles so a light read for a busy weekend. I like it

Definitely knee jerk...but with a twist.

Emotions run high on here after another crushing disappointment or another week of "I nearly did...blah blah blah"

The Scoreboard idea was a little too clinical whilst the knee jerk fed the emotion of the day, rightly or wrongly, and encouraged a reaction. As the person who runs this site perhaps you should consider a knee jerk article that deals with the good and the bad.

In effect really stir the pot...

Definitely need something on the evening after a round of games. Would go crazy without it.

I like the stock check, but it's just when a player only gets just a couple of sentences that it disappoints.

Maybe a reaction piece called "What just happened?" that sets up some of the big talking points to be expanded on later.

Being new to here, I find the format a bit confusing.

ie. Everyone jumps from the last article to the new one as soon as it's published. Last article is almost 'dead' immediately.

It's almost like it should be one long continuous Bulletin Board with the articles embedded in. Let's face it most of the discussion is general anyway and not confined to the topic written by the site owners.

As soon as a new article is published, the other one dies for posts/ responses, when actually there are a lot of valid opinions still to post.

ed. That's why you get a "Captain Sensible" article an then lost of posts saying anything about who to captain.

Does this make sense, or is it because I haven't used the forum too many moons yet?

My second suggestion is just a very simple player of the day, team of the day, talking point of the day... etc. I think it's diffiult to go into detail for a game week when it isn't over.

Tbh, the scoreboard was dry and boring an doesn't really serve a purpose with all that information provided by FPL anyway.

Kneejerk sounds good. Or you could do something like a 'Rough/Smooth' of the day of select players - track transfers/captaincies of say yourself, Jonty, Granville and Ville Ronka. Players everyone usuallly asks about on matchdays anyway. It'd be similar to the stock check in a way as it would be assessing how certain players did but the twist of having a direct effect on FPL teams.

Perhaps you could have 3 articles - Scoreboard (to merely list the bonus points), followed by Stock Check (to mention a few players who have done particularly well or badly or got themselves injured, rotated, red-carded or played in a new position) in the evening, and then Scout Notes (to give more considered and detailed reports on the previous day's matches) the next morning.

I quite like Stock Check, and prefer it to Scoreboard which only repeats information that can also be found at fpldiscovery.

But we shouldn't really be giving our readers the impression that Knee Jerking is a good thing - suggesting a few names for them to consider bringing in or dropping out is fine, but they shouldn't be encouraged to do it immediately.

Great thread to read, some nice ideas here. I would add that it might be nice to offer a quick reaction to the day's events by commenting on a few different categories of expectations: who you think performed according to script, who surprised you/caught you off guard, and who you think deserves to be considered in a different light.

Three sections, each with a different title, a few lines about each player. In fantasy baseball we get these quick reaction pieces daily, and they are a nice way to highlight players worth further consideration, for better or for worse.

Just a simple match of the day article. If you're going too do the scoreboard try to make it look like other websites. I go straight to the bbc website for details if that helps. Colour code the big point scorers and their baps.

I like Doc Wakey's concept of "stirring the pot" but I also like the rough/smooth format as suggested by Pochecino. You could transfer these two in, maybe for a hit.

My favourite part of the site is actually the Preamble. Is it doable to write some kind of companion piece to that, right after the end of each gameweek?

Mark - My honest views for what it is worth: I really look forward to the Stock Check on a Saturday night, it is a great article, however presumably due to the amount of words we rarely see it before MOTD. This is really frustrating and to be honest makes the site looks unprofessional as from 7.30pm to 10.30pm the last article up to comment on is the matchday discussion still for the 5.30pm game. I used to like the Scoreboard not so much because of the content which although was concise, was available elsewhere but more so because it came up as a new discussion thread straight after the 5.30pm game finished. The return of the Knee Jerk looks good but for me what is most important is to be able to get a new discussion thread up as soon as the 5.30pm game finishes and if that means less information than is currently in the Stock Check then it is a big thumbs up from me.

      Mark,

The scoreboard was good wen we had to wait for.bos but it's a bit redundant now.

I like the stock check... it is a knee jerk and I reckon alot of people connect with it with the emotions or a good or bad day...

That being said.... why not still do that and then once the week is over... do a summary.... that would cover it both ways...

U have a preamble but how bout ur thoughts after the games have been played? I personally like hearing about others mess ups and victories.

My thoughts. Agree the Scorecard article is nothing spectacular and also agree the Stock Check needs some thought. I wrote on here a couple of weeks ago about the need to put up an article straight after full time as there is too much time before a new article arrives and we have dugout discussion lingering too long. 'From the Gut' would be my working title and as it says its a stream of early consciousness around what we have just seen/heard which can be half written in the final 15 minutes of the matches and polished off post final score and then put up. Just let the article express what everyone is thinking - emotions and all! Probably the least polished article from an editorial perspective but its 'From the Gut'.

      Hope this helps.

Like the sound of this, doesn't need to be polished but just needs a quick turnaround to separate the action from the 5.30 game from a review of the whole days proceedings.

      Hi Mark,

As a Member for last 3 years+ (but rearly comment) this topic has brought me out of my shell...

I much preferred the previous set up... The score board was an excellent one stop shop got a round up on points & bps - not just for your own team but for rivals too without having to dip in & out of several FPL website pages (which are often slow on Saturdays)

The Knee jerk was just as good as a the stock check as it clearly indicated which player(s) was likely to be volotile in Price before the next deadline.

Scouts notes coming back are a must - they were the foundation and the heartbeat of this site, of which initially brought me to be a regular visitor... I find myself visiting less & less these days!

Good luck with the decision but the fact you have raised this as a hot topic indicates that deep down I think you already know the answer - if it's not broke don't fix it.

      Regards

I think the problem has an answer self contained. Do the article as it is on Saturday but reserve the right to upgrade it with overnught thoughts. It would help to see the thinking process that overused Saturday's thoughts and be thus more considered.

Yup. Many do. His first true test is Man City. He has been lucky to inherit two super teams and win everything with them. Bayern spell was a failure to the objective eye given that he got humiliated every season when facing a top team. Winning Bundesliga meant something when there was Klopp's Dortmund to compete with but not after Bayern bought all their best players. What Pep did with Barca Enrique is doing the same. If you think Pep is a great manager then Enrique is as well. Looking at Enriques disaster spell in a tough league like Serie A with Roma, you will see he is pretty average.

The last time I contemplated selling Aguero he had gone three or four games without doing anything.

I gave him one more match against Newcastle. He scored 5 goals.

My rule of transferring out a player after a set number of games doesnt really apply to Aguero.

I would love to sell him and invest the money elsewhere. How can you guarantee he wont hit a hat trick in his next match?

      D) Shaqiri

Gone from transferring out Walcott and Antonio to potentially keeping both....

Could use FTS on Baines to Fuchs instead

Walcott is one of the fastest fallers atm, this will only increase if he fails to start tomorrow (looking likely). I'd bear that in mind

Why are you keeping Antonio? I am doing -4 to take him out for Mane. I have zero liverpool cover!

I would hold, but if you choose to go for a Liverpool mid, I prefer Coutinho or Firmino. Mane not scoring well on the BPS
