Spurs are woeful and Leicester resolute on a night of diminished Champions League returns for the English sides. Here’s how the rather insignificant amount of action played out.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1

Spurs slipped to third in their group after another nervy and unconvincing attempt to make Wembley their Champions League home.

Eric Dier (5.2) hit the bar from a free-kick and Dele Alli (8.2) might have had a penalty, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were otherwise outplayed, hurried when in possession and stretched when without, as the visitors out-shot them by 11 attempts to nine.

More worryingly, they are now winless in six matches in all competitions and have scored just twice in their last five – and both of those were from penalties.

With Erik Lamela (6.7) missing out due to a hip problem, Pochettino recalled midfielder Moussa Sissoko (6.7), who is still banned domestically. Striker Vincent Janssen (7.7) dropped to the bench and full back Danny Rose (5.9) was rested, presumably with Sunday’s North London derby in mind – Ben Davies (4.8) took his place.

Janssen was soon involved, however, as Mousa Dembele (5.4) went off with a knock, which meant a return to midfield for Heung-Min Son (7.5). The South Korean, who has failed to score in his last four league starts, was a peripheral figure throughout. Close to 90,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have now cut their losses on him this week alone.

With their injury list slowly growing, Spurs’ squad is starting to look rather thin. They have sorely missed the goals of Harry Kane (10.7) is recent weeks and the England man’s possible return from an ankle injury for the weekend’s match at Arsenal cannot come soon enough.

However, with Pochettino confirming a twisted ankle for Dembele, he’ll be a major doubt for Sunday’s clash – we all know by now the impact that his absence can have on Spurs and, in particular, Kane’s scoring rate.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Dembélé (Janssen 30), Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen (Winks 66), Son (Nkoudou 73).
Subs not used: Vorm, Rose, Nkoudou, Onomah, Carter-Vickers.

FC Copenhagen 0 Leicester City 0

Sometimes the stats say it all: two teams; 29 attempts between them; only three on target. Result? Goalless draw.

But that was an outcome which suited Leicester just fine, with the Foxes needing just one more point from two matches to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Coach Claudio Ranieri made three changes from the side who scrapped to a draw away at Tottenham, with Luis Hernandez (4.3) in for Danny Simpson (4.9), Daniel Amartey (4.5) replacing Andy King (4.8) and Jeffrey Schlupp (4.9) coming in for Shinji Okazaki (5.7).

Islam Slimani (8.4), still struggling with a groin injury, didn’t even travel, which meant another start for the in-form Ahmed Musa (7.0).

The Foxes became the first side to keep a clean sheet in their first four Champions League matches, and it was no surprise that Ranieri reserved much of his praise for Kasper Schmeichel (5.0), who produced a fine late save to secure the draw.

City are now starting to replicate their Euro form in the Premier League. A good run of forthcoming fixtures – West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Watford and Sunderland – could prompt investment in the champions, particularly at the back.

Ranieri would seem unlikely to be concerned with resting players for Sunday’s meeting with West Brom given that an international break now looms.

However, the likes of Marc Albrighton (5.1) and Okazaki will be pushing for recalls, while Simpson would seem likely to slot in at right-back. Hernandez, Schlupp and perhaps Musa look the most likely to come under threat.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernández, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs, Mahrez, Amartey, Drinkwater, Schlupp (Okazaki 71), Vardy, Musa.
Subs not used: Zieler, King, Albrighton, Simpson, Okazaki, Gray, Ulloa.

    -Walker owners-

    Are we keeping for now?
Fixtures aren't the nicest (3 tough away games in the next 5), and Spurs don't look quite as solid at the moment

I've had him from gw1 and he's been an absolute godsend, but am starting feel like maybe it's a decent time to cash in and look elsewhere?

Going by last night's game, I'd say ditch...

But I would hold on to him if you've had him since GW1

No shame benching him for this weekend mate

It's rly hard...I have him since GW 1 and I saw he as season keeper but now I'm thinking about switching to Fuchs and then to Alonso, or even straight to Azpi

I got rid for Fuchs so I could afford Son > Coutinho and Deeney > Austin. Took a -4.

Walker rotates really well with Bellerin for the next 15 game weeks, so I am keeping them both. Just the next 5 or so we need to be wary of. Season keeper

This is true, but too many transfers to bring them out/in again when fixtures tidy up. I think both of them will be top of the charts for Def at the end of the season.

      I would say yes.

KDB is in top form at the moment (the whole season really) and should provide some heavy returns the next few games.

Sanchez could go either way. But seeing Arsenal's fixtures and knowing their form in November, I would say it's very likely he does nothing.

It's still risky though...as expected for players of that caliber.

Don't own him but it's a difficult decision if it's for a hit.

If it's for free and you're getting someone like Coutinho then I think an argument can be made for getting rid, same as last week.

I think it's fair to keep him this week, if you take this week in isolation.

Yes it wasn't the correct decision to keep him this long but nothing can be done about the last 6 GWs now. After the break we will be able to make our choice of replacement! 🙂

Yep, big mistake keeping him on my GW6 wildcard. I'll never forgive Heaton for his heroics last GW, though.

I'm eyeing up Lukaku as his replacement, I think. Costa's 4 yellows are off-putting and it's more funds ITB for a good Wally replacement, if needed.

    Morning guys,

    I'm thinking of going a bit maverick;

    Team is;

    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - Stones - Holebas - Friend - Amat
    Sanchez - Firmino - Bolasie - Allen - Capoue
    Costa - Aguero - Lukaku

    2ft 0.0

    Thinking of taking a -4 to do the following;

Bolasie, Costa and Capoue to Hazard, Austin, and 4.4m 5th mid (possibly De Roon)

    Yes, or No?

Would really like to lose Benteke and Capoue & Collins are haunting me for a few weeks now, can't find a time to get rid of them and their price is about to drop again.

    Few options :

    C Benteke & Capoue to Keane & 8.1M (-4)

He has a poor injury record and if he's not fully fit it's also an excuse to have him withdraw from the England matches. It's not like we don't have other options with Giroud and Ramsey back, Ox in good form

      1. Konstaapeli
        • 9 Years

It's NLD, so Wenger will play the strongest side he can. If Walcott is fit to play, he'll play.

Ramsey has a poor injury record, he's just played his first game since Aug, same as Giroud, Wenger has said he'll be cautious with Ramsey, Ox is in OK form but you wouldn't play him in the derby through choice.

Injury records won't prevent a player playing in this, Wenger will play his best team that's fit.

Walcott will come off the bench vs Spurs at best imo. Why would he start him with his injury record? When they have Ox, Giroud and Ramsey fit.

    1. _Freddo
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Because if he passes a fitness test he won't be injured.

If he's fit enough to come off the bench he's fit enough to start, the lack of risk will come if he's not fit enough for the bench because Wenger don't need to risk him as a sub.

      1. Bubz
        • 12 Years

I don't think being fit enough to come off the bench is the same thing as being fit enough to start. He hasn't played any football for 2 weeks. His match fitness will be down. It would make more sense to bring him on for 15 minutes than play him for 70

Wenger has so many options right now that he does not have to have half fit players on the bench, that's the point.

If he passes a test he's passing it and available to start or like last week, he won't be involved.

If you believe he won't start than you should sell.

It's not like Walcott doesn't have a history with injuries though. It's already gone from should be okay for Tuesday to now still not knowing for this weekend.

You're right though - so many options, which to me means Walcott may not start even if just back from injury.

Big game though so who knows!

He's been training this week, there's pictures of him in a training game before the Ludagorets game in the Standard.

He hasn't been inactive which imply that Wenger may have just been protecting him for this huge game.

                Potentially yes.

By the way I saw your other reply (I deleted mine really quickly as it repeated itself but you must have seen it 🙂 )

By history of injuries I meant that he may be someone who needs a bit of time to come back and Wenger may want to ease him back in. Not that he wouldn't play any of them because they all have injury concerns.

You said it yourself that they have options. If Giroud plays up front then they have Sanchez, Iwobi, Ox, and Ramsey who could fill the spots either side of Ozil.

I'm not saying he's 100% going to play and I'm not saying he's 100% not but there's enough doubts there for me to justify why people want to sell. For me it's not as black and white as if he's fit he plays. Yes he's been great this season but they have options.

I wondered where my reply went 🙂

No you're right, I don't doubt that there's enough reason to sell, I do doubt that if he's fit he won't play, Wenger will want his A team out for this.

Playing Spurs and playing Sunderland are completely different ball games.

One of the key things for me is I think they'll play Giroud up front and straight away that means there's on less wide slot available.

I could be wrong but he's come back firing and Wenger might prefer a big man up front.

We'll see though. I could be wrong, Walcott may start, get a hat trick and I'm on for another awful week 😆

I raised the giroud point as a pro-Ozil anti-Sanchez option yesterday, but was quickly dismised. Unless Wenger goes 4-4-2, which he might, I think Sanchez will be more withdrawn.

Theo seems to bring the best out of sanchez regardless of where thy play, too.

I've been looking at the Arsenal forums.

Ramsey still looks like he's not fully recovered/fit yet. Ox doesn't fit into Arsenal's system as much and they all don't like Gru.

Even if Gru does play, they expect Theo and Alexis to Flank.

90% of them wager that Walcott has been protected for this game as he's been one of their best players this season.

I don't doubt any of that, if Walcott is fit. But he clearly isn't. He's obviously having some problems if the injury that he was supposed to be recovered from by Tuesday is still needing a late fitness test

He's been training this week, there's pictures of him in a training game before the Ludagorets game in the Standard.

He hasn't been inactive which imply that Wenger may have just been protecting him for this huge game.

        Exactly what I just did.

Saved 2 FTS to get rid of one of Sanchez or Walcott for their tough fixtures.

No brainier to me if you can do it.

Couthino is looking amazing too anyway, it's not like there aren't other amazing midfield options.

If Arsenal had 2 easy fixtures I might see it differently but it's just not worth it against a Spurs & Man U defence..

If Walcott plays any part this weekend then expect him to be named and playing in the England squad for their busy schedule.

If Walcott is left out of the squad this weekend then Arsenal have the perfect excuse to ensure he gets left at home to continue recover and so getting 2 weeks rest.

Given the current amount of good cover that Arsenal currently have for his position then if I was Wenger I know what I would do.

Walcott has already had a 2 week rest so he doesn't really need another one. If he is fit Wenger won't leave him out of the squad because of internationals, his number one priority is to win the game. If I could afford Hazard I would probably take the hit and sell, just to avoid the anxious wait.

@ pete firstly , sanhez upfront has been working especially against teams that press more i.e. spurs so wouldnt think wenger would change it up just cos giroud fit again now. Secondly to think that on walcotts form he has to compete with any of those players youve mentioned is farcical imo.

I've already sold him. I don't want two Arsenal mids, and I'd prefer to keep Sanchez. Walcott may start, but I don't see him playing 90 mins with the other options Wenger has.

If Walcott was pictured training with the first team before the Lodogorets match, then he has already passed a fitness to play test. To me, the fact that he was fit to start the Euro match and didn’t, implies that some caution has already been built into the schedule and Wenger has taken the opportunity to give Walcott an extended break. This suggests, to me, that he is being saved for the prestigious London derby, particularly as he has been, arguably, Arsenal’s most influential player so far.

It’s also worth noting that two weeks is not a long enough lay-off to significantly dent match fitness, indeed, it is not much beyond an optimal recovery and with most of the week training with the firsts, I’d predict he starts.

    Morning all,

I have 2 ft's and wondering what to do with them.

    0.3ITB

    Current team:

    Foster Boruc

    Macauley, Amat, Morgan, Friend Holebas

    Walcott Sanchez, Firmino, Allen, Capoue

    Costa Lukaku Aguero (C)

I'm thinking I might get rid of Foster and get in Heaton?

    Maybe save the extra FT?

The other option I'm looking at is:

    Walcott --> Couthino
    Foster --> Jaku

    Thoughts??

    More from Arsene Wenger:

    - on whether Mesut Ozil will be rested during the international break
I got a noise of that, yes. I think it would be an intelligent decision and I would welcome the decision but we have to wait until he [Joachim Loew] gives his selection out to see if Mesut Ozil will get a rest or not.

    - on whether Aaron Ramsey will regularly play on the right
I just consider the next game and try to find the balance with the players to be in a position where they can give their best for the team. Aaron Ramsey has come back from 11 weeks injury you know, he has to come back, you do not come back [and have that] magic. It takes time but he can bring us his strengths in every single position - wide or central. He prefers to play central, to be central, and I can understand that. But when he plays wide he has enough freedom to be central as well.

    - on whether Aaron talks to him about that
Yes, of course I speak with all of the players about their performances, about their positions. Most of the time I think you want the players to be happy and to play in their best position.

Ramsey has always wanted to be central but he's played on the right so many times that I'm almost certain it will happen again this season, just perhaps not so regularly.

they both have LIV, which have not been very solid. EVE has only kept 3 CS's out of 10. than SOU play Palace, Boro, Stoke, BOU...still feel he is the better option.

I'll say A may just edge it for me then.

3 transfers made so heres my team for GW 11, gtg? *is for transfers in

    Heaton* (Foster)
    Walker, Smith, C.Dawson (Collins,Evans)
    Redmond*,Allen*, Coutinho, Alexis, Firminho
    Aguero, Lukaku (Grabban)

Bench ain't too strong but I'm looking to possibly improve it for Christmas time when more changes will be made between starters & bench players.

Made some dangerous early moves Saturday night as I would have been priced out if i'd waited
Antonio, Benteke and Valencia out, Coutinho, Austin and Fuchs in (-4).

All 3 players I took out have fallen .1 each and Cout (+.2) and Austin (+.1) mean that i'm 0.6 better off in theory!

Hopefully Austin will come through tonight unscathed... or better yet, have a nice rest!

Sat/sun transfers are great. If theres a rare injury a -4 is worth having a great team value over the season

good moves imo. I did something similar on Sunday with Austin and Allen in. could not keep losing this much value in players

Firmino is the only player in the prem that would take his shirt off after a goal against Crystal Palace. (Owner)

Hi all, my team for this week is:

    - Foster -
    Fuchs - Stones - Blind
    Firmino - Coutinho - Gundagen - Redmond
    Aguero (c) - Zlatan - Lukaku

    Jaku - Capoue - Love - Amat

I did Sanchez Friend and Marney to Coutinho, Gundagen and Fuchs for - 4.
Risk keeping zlatan, but it is swansea and in the near future zlatan and Firmino or coutinho will become hazard and Kane with money left over.

    Wild card still intact.
    Thoughts?
