Undiluted woe for United, unbridled joy for Southampton – Thursday’s Europa League matches were a study in contrast. Here’s how the two ties panned out.

Fenerbahce 2 Manchester United 1

Injuries, goal droughts and a manager publicly shaming his players; dropping to third in their Europa League group was the least of Manchester United’s worries following a dreadful performance in Turkey.

Even Wayne Rooney (8.6) scoring for only the second time in 14 matches this season did little to lift the gloom on a night of unremitting negativity for the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba (8.2) limped off with a thigh injury that makes him a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Swansea. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) replaced him and again failed to score – he now has just one goal from his last 11 matches – while the team as a whole enjoyed 70% possession but did precious little with it.

A makeshift defence missing Eric Bailly (5.4), Antonio Valencia (5.5) and Chris Smalling (5.9) conceded a goal within two minutes and never recovered. Only the latter, who has a knock, is a short-term injury worry and the pair drafted in as centre-halves in Turkey, Daley Blind (5.8) and Marcos Rojo (5.2), looked uneasy all night.

Coach Jose Mourinho started Ander Herrera (6.3), who is suspended domestically, and Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6) in midfield in a bid to give Juan Mata (7.4) a rest. But the pair produced so little that the Spaniard was brought on at half-time.

By then, the die had been cast, as Mourinho was quick to point out post-match.

“A team that concedes after two minutes is a team that is not ready, not mentally prepared, not focused, not concentrated.”

Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.9) replaced the ineffectual Marcus Rashford (6.9) for the final half hour but had little impact, with Mourinho talking down his immediate prospects.

“He has to do more. That is as simple as that. We have big expectations in the club and lots of players for these positions. He has to play better than Mata and Lingard and Martial, and it’s a simple as that.”

After such a night to forget, the same could be said of the whole side.

Swansea City will suddenly fancy their chances of a Gameweek 11 “upset”, with United’s squad currently looking bereft of assets to tempt even a cursory glance from us Fantasy managers.

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Darmian, Blind, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Schneiderlin (Mata 45), Pogba (Ibrahimovic 30), Rashford (Mkhitaryan 61), Rooney, Martial.
Subs not used: Romero, Jones, Young, Fellaini.

Southampton 2 Internazionale 1

The Saints exorcised any demons left over from their unfortunate loss in the San Siro by grabbing a glorious win against their Italian opponents in the reverse fixture.

Inter had pinched victory against the run of play in Italy and threatened to repeat the trick when they scored from their first shot of the match at St Mary’s.

But a Virgil van Dijk (5.4) equaliser, after Oriol Romeu (4.5) had hit the bar, and then a Yuto Nagatomo own goal from a Dusan Tadic (7.2) cross turned everything round in a blistering second-half performance.

Tadic had blown a chance to level the match just before the break when he had a penalty saved. Charlie Austin (6.7), who was not on the pitch at the time, should remain the club’s spot-kick man if Tadic’s weak effort is anything to go by.

Austin came on in the second half, replacing Jay Rodriguez (6.3), one of five changes coach Claude Puel had made from the side that lost to Chelsea on Sunday.

In came Maya Yoshida (4.3), Sam McQueen (4.5) James Ward-Prowse (5.1) and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (4.3).

Puel has generally juggled his resources well, but the workload for two of his attacking stars, Tadic and Nathan Redmond (6.0), has been high. Record signing Sofiane Boufal (6.8) was again on the bench, but played no part. Whether that suggests he will figure in Sunday’s trip to Hull remains to be seen.

The 12.8%-owned Austin, however, looks almost nailed-on for a start at the weekend.

Southampton XI: Forster, Martina, Yoshida, van Dijk, McQueen, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Højbjerg, Redmond, Tadic (Davis 76), Rodriguez (Austin 58).
Subs not used: Lewis, Clasie, Fonte, Boufal, Bertrand.

    Kun lukaku deeney

This looks UGLY...but bear with me:

    a) Will Keane (bench fodder) / Lovren (play most weeks) / Nyom (rotating)

    b) Frazier Campbell (bench fodder) / Stones (play most weeks) / Nyom (rotating)

    c) Campbell (bench fodder) / Smith (rotating) / Evans (rotating)

    A / B or C if pushed?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    RMT Updated

The Professor has been busy with his abacus this week carrying out a refresh of the Rate My Team tool in the Members area.

    http://rate-my-team.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/

Key updates include better recognition of Heaton's save point potential, Allen's number 10 role and Chelsea's improved form under their 3-4-3 formation.

Those no longer nailed on have also taken a slight tumble.

Feel free to take a look if you have Membership and let us know your thoughts or any further suggested changes here.

The new RMT is suggesting I take a -8 hit and bring in Hazard, Stones and Morgan for Kos, Valencia and Sterling. A 17 point swing over the next few GW. Yikes. I was all for holding!

Lol at Mark and those at FPL, they have no shame, on the Scoutcast they speak about being unable to own both Sanchez AND Hazard and have just started a twitter campaign that will no doubt lead to articles on here suggesting why you should 'look elsewhere' from Sanchez.

Trying to manipulate the market again or force mass sales of Sanchez because you can't fit both in and don't want to risk going without?

    No shame.

I'm calm 🙂 I'm just laughing at the abusing of 'power', where's the tweets guiding people to sell Sterling after 4 blanks? Antonio had them for less, I'm sure Capoue had them too.

Off course, we won't see those as he won't want to lose money on him.

It's not harsh, he made a case in the scoutcast to sell Sanchez because he couldn't afford both.

Low and behold the seeds of doubt has been planted in others heads trying to force mass sales to make that decision easier to make.

I'm saying he's manipulating the way he wants the game to be played, thats clear with highlighting positives about a player with 4 blanks that's he wants to hold while drawing negative's to players he wants to sell so he's not alone, it's no longer subtle, everyone is competitive and I don't doubt Mark/@officialFPL is.

Some coffee would help with that yawn.

I don't think anyone who posts on here is entirely impartial - each post about player selection inevitably has some bias in it depending on who the poster has in their squad - I'm pretty sure I'm influenced by it. I don't think Mark & co. are above this - whether they should be is a matter for debate, but I'd doubt it's completely possible. The scoutcast is all about opinions, so I'm happy to hear them, biased or not.

No doubt at all, the scoutcast is about their opinions and you either tune in or you don't.

I just question the integrity of taking said opinions to the official FPL handle to try and influence sales/bandwagons that fit with said opinions.

Sorry but if you're out in the public domain you are there to be shot at, no offence meant.

I'd agree with that public domain comment. Maybe it's just the medium. I think Scoutcast is fair game for any opinions to be aired, perhaps the FPL Twitter account shouldn't be the place.

Just a short response to this first - if you believe I've the influence to change the entire FPL market, how do I go about offering an opinion on anything, either in person, or via the site?

          Long answer...

The ScoutCast and the articles with the category "Opinion" are just that. They are not some veiled attempt at myself or anyone on the site attempting to benefit from shaping the market.

It's inevitable that, at times, my team and my transfers are going to reflect my opinion.I play the game like everyone else - I'm not faking it for the purpose of running the site - I can only apologise if my opinion spills over and sometimes clouds the "correct" judgment call. But I'm literally not the only voice on the ScoutCast or behind the selections put forward on this site.

We often get criticised frequently for not offering clear opinions and views and the accused of Machiavellian schemes when we dare come off the fence.

I'd like to think the majority listen and read the material that is clearly opinion and make up their own mind.

            Good response Mark.

I think the opinion bit is the most pertinent part of your response as I got caught out a little in replying to a previous article when I disagreed fundamentally with an opinion on Austin being nailed on for league games after the manager was quoted as saying the opposite in that he could "not" play all the games.
I guess due to the professional nature of your site a lot of us reading these articles take it that we are reading fact but I have started to look at things more from the writers point of view after that that last article and I'll chime in if I disagree but I don't get as worked up over it.

Anyway excellent site and excellent resource tool for us all so please keep up the good work.

Mark, thanks for the response, it's good to know you're not too big to answer criticism.

Off course you're entitled to an opinion, no one said you wasn't, I was just pointing out that your opinion has a wide reach and there's a line between personal opinion and the opinion of the offical game, for example, why would the official game think its a good idea to look elsewhere from the games highest scoring player?

I've been coming on here since 07/08 as Chill Pill/F Society and have seen this grow from a small blog to a monster so let's not pretend that you don't have the reach to influence or make/break bandwagons (or at least to get them started) I don't remember you getting 4k+ votes on a poll back in the day and your influence is far greater now you've linked up with the official game and have their outlets to plant seeds into people's minds that eventually snowball into bandwagons (good or bad) the Antonio one sticks out this season, sorry but it does, that was created and rammed home with articles, gifs, constant tweets etc

Anyway, I'm a fully paid up supporter of the site just expressing an opinion, it tickled me as I listened to the scoutcast this morning at work and said in another group that the next player to get the 'Aguero treatement' on these platforms would be Sanchez if he failed to score against Spurs based on the vibe I got from the scoutcast and your inability to have Sanchez and Hazard, not even an hour later the tweet was pushed out asking if 'we should look elsewhere' he didn't even have to blank.

Good luck if/when you chose to sell him and no offence meant.

We the tweet came from a segment I produced for the FPL show on possibly sacrificing Sanchez because of the doubts with Giroud and mainly due to Hazard's appeal.

I'm not in control of the tweets - I had no idea it was being tweeted or the content of the tweet. I just did the segment for the show based on my view of the Sanchez situation.

It's hardly an agenda though - why would I want to drive down the price of one of my own players? I'm not selling yet and may not sell at all - I'm just trying to get across that Sanchez is likely to be the player to go to make way for Hazard because we're soon going to want to inject funds elsewhere - probably the defence.

I'm aware that, via the show and this site, my views have a wide reach. I think I'm quite comfortable with the site audience but, via the show, it's more tricky. That's a difficult one because it's on me to contribute to the content of the show and, inevitably, my views will leak into that - but, like with the Sanchez piece, I do try to caveat it.

It is laughable that you think that a tweet from Mark will have sufficient influence to "force mass sales" of Sanchez. Most owners will be more than happy with his output to date, I don't think they're just going to sell on Mark's say so.

Not to mention that it's ludicrous to think that he'd want to manipulate the markets in such a way.

Most people can't afford both, so it is good to have opinion on the alternatives. That's what the Scout is for.

Let's put that theory to the test with some negative Sterling tweets highlighting no goals, no assists and no BPS in the last 4.

Will probably more than likely end up in the Scoutpicks.

There isn't a need to highlight this; if you even vaguely follow football you know he hasn't got points for a few weeks. More interesting is the fact he got an assist midweek and whether or not he is starting to look more like getting back to his form earlier this season.

But I'd probably recommend Austin in this week for Hull (if you're gonna double up, do it vs Hull), and then move Redmond next week for someone like Allen/Gundog. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get rotated a little more after the internationals.

I believe that they are all lost - his counter will then reset when the game comes back up tomorrow lunchtime. However this was the case last season and I'm not sure what happened this season to those who had gone up 0.3 - so things may have changed.

Do you think if both blank this weekend that they will still continue to rise over international break? I faltered on doing Shaq and Capoue to Allen and Gundogan earlier this week in hope for better injury news. In hindsight, with funds invested heavy up top, should have just gone for it.

            • 16 Years

If they blank? Because of their respective prices their will more than likely be some residue purchases while their hauls are still recent memory. But it shouldn't be anything like what we are seeing currently. But a 0.1 rise should still be possible.
