Diego Costa crowns another professional away performance from Antonio Conte’s men as Chelsea run out 1-0 winners over Middlesbrough. Elsewhere, Eden Hazard frustrates, while Marcos Alonso confirms his reputation as the most forward-thinking of defensive options. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s Teesside tussle.

On the Rise

Diego Costa
The Spaniard’s relentless form continued with an opportunistic strike, his tenth of the season and his fifth goal in the last six Gameweeks.

The goal, plus the fact that 10% of FPL managers handed Costa the armband, will again ramp up the pressure on those holding Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku following yesterday’s blanks and with toughening fixtures looming for the pair.

Still sitting on four bookings, Costa has now navigated through six Premier League outings without earning the caution that will trigger a one-match ban. Those who have held off investment on that basis will be beginning to wonder if it will arrive before the Gameweek 19 cut-off.

Costa will now be free to face the Spurs defence in Gameweek 13 and follows that with a crunch trip to the Etihad.

However, from Gameweek 15, Chelsea’s fixtures are nothing short of superb and, assured of starts over the busy Christmas spell, Costa’s stock seems destined to rise further.

While Hazard clearly represents a key midfield investment, the prospect of doubling up on Chelsea’s twin threats looks difficult to resist from Gameweek 15 onwards – barring that potential ban.

Marcos Alonso
The left wing-back has now returned a clean sheet in each of his six starts for Chelsea.

Curiously, Alonso has returned just a single bonus point in that time – mainly because, of all the four FPL defenders fielded, he returns the fewest defensive actions.

However, Alonso’s attacking promise was again evident at the Riverside.

Pushing forward almost as a left winger, he is clearly benefiting from linking with Eden Hazard, with defences distracted by the Belgian’s menace and leaving space for Alonso to exploit.

His end product was lacking and often is, but, given the frequency of his attacks and his presence in the box from both open play and set-pieces, further attacking returns look inevitable.

Coupled with Chelsea’s peerless resilience, Alonso appears to be the obvious top bracket defensive target.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
It’s incredibly harsh to knock Hazard following the first blank in five Gameweeks and, while his form and potential as a Fantasy asset remains far from “in decline”, our confidence in the Belgian as a rounded captain candidate can be questioned.

Having earned a reputation in previous seasons as an asset heavily biased towards home fixtures, he has so far reinforced that theory with his returns to this point. Hazard has now produced just a single goal on his travels: only 28 of his 82 points have arrived on the road.

While that will be a minor concern for most, it’s clear that Hazard is still a work in progress as an all-round candidate for the armband.

He has the advantage over Costa at Stamford Bridge but, home and away, the striker has a clear edge as a reliable and consistent scorer of points. Costa has scored in six of his past seven road trips.

Despite today’s failing, Hazard’s stock has to remain sky-high ahead of Chelsea’s festive fixtures and his place at the top of the Watchlist is untouched.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Haz, Mane, Firmino, Red, Capoue
    Kun, Luk, Austin

    A) Luk to Giroud
    B) Luk+Capou to Kane+De Roon
    C) Luk+Red to Giroud+Siggy

Want to unlock double of South, and thinking of ditching Mane on GW14.

Which is the better attack going into the Christmas period?

    A) 3-5-2

    Kdb - Hazard - Firmino - Coutinho - Siggy
    Kane - Austin - Anichebe

    B) 3-4-3

    Hazard - Coutinho - Firmino - Siggy - Snoddy
    Kane - Costa - Austin

Trying to avoid Arsenal & City for the December run as fixtures are not the best and rotation is likely to happen. It's basically between Costa & Kdb for me.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Should be both around the same mark, KDB probably if they both play the same amount of mins. KDB is more injury prone though I feel and might be rotated because Pep is Pep. So Id say Costa + Snod > KDB + Anichebe.

My main dilemma now: Siggy or Theo?

Siggy has pens, Theo has better goal threat and slightly better fixtures.
Bob Bradley looks hopeless but Siggy is nailed, Theo has a slight risk about him but I reckon he's fairly nailed - will maybe miss one game over Xmas.

Think Siggy will outscore him from GW15-20.

Walcott faces Everton(GW16) & City(GW17) both away and is likely to miss a match or 2 because of rotation.

Yeah seen those 2 fixtures. Siggy has wba and mid away then - both very tough attacking fixtures for a team like Swansea.

Everton look very off the pace atm, so I think Arsenal will do well there

I have worse than that. I've managed to get by okay so far with a value front line of Kun, Defoe and Austin. Losing Kun this week, and beefing midfield. Defence isn't expensive either, but solid - Alonso, Cedric, Evans, Friend, Amat

A lot of cash for someone when for 1 or 2m less there are similar points. Will be worth it in long run cos he's very consistent. Sharing an attacking pot with any from Silva, Gundogan, Yaya, Aguero, Nolito, Sterling, Icenacho, Navas etc. Hazard a better pick for me. Himself and Costa sharing pot of decent Chelsea attacking spoils

I'm sooo hoping this "Sell Aguero" nonsense gathers real momentum. It reminds of the time a few years back when Ronaldo was earning double digit returns week in, week out and Mark commented on how fickle a bunch us managers were when we sold him in our droves after he eventually blanked one weekend!

How out of form is he? Three goals and an assist (against Barcelona) in his three games prior to Saturday hardly warrants the need to press the panic button imo.

Sure, Sergio didn't score in six games in all competitions between 28th September and 26th October but that's his Modus Operandi. Click on the "Choose Another Season" filter on the link below and you'll see what I mean...

    http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=44554&season_id=149

As recently as GW10, 81,140 managers decided that after three blanks enough was enough and disowned him only to have Kun ram 16 points right up their back passages 😯

The 13k who have punted him so far this GW better get well lubed up then!

🙂 I finally left the keep Kun at all costs camp. He's still going to get hauls and do brilliantly, that I know. One thing you forget to mention is that lots of options we can replace Kun with are doing very, very well also. 16 point haul is tough to miss out on, but a double digit haul from a replacement for 3m less? I'll take that.

Which games do we think Aguero is going to face rotation in?

From 10th to 18th December they play 3 times:

    Leicester (a)
    Watford (h)
    Arsenal (h)

4 days inbetween each game enough?

Over Christmas it's only really 31st Dec (Liverpool away) and 2nd Jan (Burnley home) where they're in quick succession but after that there's FA Cup anyway so another chance for a rest.

Could we see him play all games barring injury?

He is playing a different role under Pep, he has to do a lot of work off the ball as well so it's not the same as under Pellegrini and Mancini.

A different role that has seen him score 8 goals in 9 starts?

Costa has 10 goals in 12 starts.

I don't follow this logic, so you may not captain him along with 10 other starters in your team.

Do you expect him to score no goals or assists in this period?

If you don't captain Hazard in this period is there any point in keeping him when you could also find cheaper mids and use the extra money in other positions?

Where do you draw the line? You won't captain Costa so why own him when you could have Defoe?

      1. Christina.
        • 15 Years
        9 years, 17 days ago

Hazard has decent fixtures, is 2.5m cheaper and no CL. Kun has CL and Ars, Chel and liverpool in the run up to 2 Jan.

I don't expect Kun to score no attacking returns, obviously just trying to move the 2.5m I can save around my team to get rid of the cancer called Williams/Fuchs/Allen. As long as the replacements keep up with Kun I can't see the problem.

Let's not talk about fixtures, the reason Aguero is 13m is because he's been as close to fixture proof as you could get in the time that he's been in England.

I understand that people want to sell to spread the money about, I may do it myself in a few weeks, it's just the justifications that are odd because you could pick holes in all of them.

It's a guessing game. It has always been. Can't blame people for having fun and trying to justify their transfers on here. Everyone seems to think they now best.

Take Kane. He looked destined for 2 pts in the 89 minute. Ended up with 13pts 5 minutes later.

I'm not blaming people for selling, don't care either way tbh, it's just reading people trying to convince themselves that he's a bad pick that's open to debate which is all we are doing.

There's a bloke a few posts up saying he doesn't score at home, must have not watched football last year or the year before.

I sometimes wonder if many on here actually watch games. Anichebe and Sunderland with him in the team actually look pretty good offensively. I know he has history of going cold, but right now, he looks a great pick in a 352.

Also makes Defoe that much of a better prospect
