Nothing can be taken for granted this season.

Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet, Sergio Aguero’s ability to fluctuate from a frustrating liability to an essential goal machine and the Liverpool midfield: blessed with brilliance and then cruelly cursed by misfortune.

It was Manchester City who provided the early rise and fall on today’s rollercoaster, first reassuring some with Aguero’s presence on the teamsheet, while disappointing owners of Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones and Ilkay Gundogan.

Then Aguero took over.

Like Harry Kane in Gameweek 12, he transformed the most ordinary team performance into a personal haul that revived his stock and forced an immediate re-assessment of plans.

Strategies were re-written with Aguero’s brace, only to be torn up by the events that were to follow at Anfield.

We had such expectations of Jurgen Klopp’s attacking three against Sunderland but, when the whistle blew on Merseyside, we were left mainly with blanks, and the scars of Roberto Firmino hobbling off and Phillipe Coutinho stretchered from the field.

Following minor concerns for the Brazilian and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard over the international break, this latest setback appears far more significant.

We should perhaps wait on a scan and the full prognosis but, already the reaction to Coutinho’s agony has been marked: he tops the Fantasy Premier League “transfers out” column and will surely continue to shed owners before we know the true extent of the damage.

A possible tragedy in Liverpool’s superb season, for some Fantasy managers, the loss of Coutinho will be a game changer that opens up a new and all too convenient strategy.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s relentless form that continued today in a dramatic 5-4 Swansea City victory lifts the Icelander to the forefront of our transfer thinking.

Along with Chelsea’s Pedro, he will surely vie to replace a potentially stricken Coutinho and, in doing so, free up funds to investigate Diego Costa, or more likely, the Harry Kane option in attack.

Those previously considering an exit for Aguero, myself included, may now be presented with an alternative route.

The 33% owned Romelu Lukaku could now be sacrificed with funds liberated from Coutinho’s sale providing a means to acquire Kane.

Aguero, thanks to his goals and a cruel twist of fate at Anfield, could now be locked in once again.

The City striker, along with the unfortunate Coutinho, were part of a turbulent day that offered a stark reminder to all of just how quickly fortunes can shift.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hazard > Siggy done.

Hazard is a joke of a player. Simply Can't perform away from home. A dismal Everton performance made him look world class when really he is at best streaky and at worst a blank specialist (see last season for further evidence).

Wow. Complete and utter pathetic justification and you clearly aren't convinced.

If you want to see how good his FPL performances have been this season then tell me how many midfielders have outscored him this season?

Look at the underlying stats. He clearly has a problem away from home.

People forget their opinions and attitudes towards Hazard around GW5.

Clearly you're pissed and not speaking rationally. He is by no means essential and I don't even own him, but his performance against Everton was better than any other player in the PL this season. Two blanks don't make any player a blank specialist. Last season is irrelevant. Siggy's chances against Spurs are slim. You should've waited one more week. Good luck though.

I'm thinking longer term. I'm wildcarding in GW15 and there are no obvious picks for GW14. Might as well get a WC player in cheap and get some price rises.

His performance against Everton was largely down to Everton's experimental 3-4-3 system, which was a disaster. Consistency is the issue with Hazard.

That's what I love about FPL. In the end, you decide. You own it; it's yours. If you want to captain Lukaku because you have a half-cooked theory, then you can do it and no one can stop you.

well that's just the stupidest comment I've ever seen on this site. Hazard is anything but a Joke of a player. At best he is the best midfielder in the league by far. No other mid does what he does as consistently. He's no more streaky than any other player and the blank specialist comment is ridiculous. Last season was a one-off where the whole team were bad (mou) and he was injured all year (hip). Did you happen to notice his previous 3 years. Unbelievable!!

Agreed. Any defender over 6.0 (or 5.5 actually) really has to deliver in this season of no clean sheets to be worth it.

With the upcoming fixtures a VVD can be a bargain.

I think people are only getting him in because they have a (probably) injured Coutinho and it could cost them in terms of price waiting a week. Imo Coutinho will almost certainly be out next week and probably at least 2 GWs, so I am shipping either way as I don't have too much value tied up in him. With Lallana also out, Firm doubt (probably nothing serious), possible Sturridge injury, the pool mids have kind of lost their appeal to me. Swansea a good long term pick in my opinion with form, fixtures and involvement in a lot of Swansea's goals. Will probably cost you between 0.2-0.5 to wait for next week making the transfer.

By people I mean me 🙂

Kane got in some good positions today and was really unlucky to have 1-2 goals. Proven goal scorer. Finding fitness after injury with some games against poor defense to get his confidence up. I wouldn't be surprised if he scores 5-8 goals before the new year.

Wouldn't call it "really unlucky" not to have 1-2 goals from today's match, but that is just me. I absolutely hate watching him as a player, as I usually think he looks pretty bad until he somehow finds the net. I wouldn't be surprised if he got 5-8 goals in the next 6 GWs either, but would be surprised if he got 2-3 goals either.

Dunno. Palace, Hull, Swansea and Burnley look absolutely ripe for picking points off. The best striker/mid against any of those, on any given gameweek, is worth about 10 mill.

Nothing for him tonight but I thought Hazard looked nothing short of the best player in the prem. He just seems to wander around at will with the ball..

He makes it look so easy.

Spurs pressed really well in the first half and Chelsea don't really have the individuals to play out from the back and resist the press which led to a lot of Courtois long balls and a high turnover of possession.
Dembélé played out of his skin and ran the game but Spurs tired and Chelsea's 3-5-2 stretching the pitch got the better of them, you could see Spurs still pressing but there was always an out ball in the second half, usually Moses or Alonso wide on the touchline. Good game in all.

Would you take a hit to fix this shambolic defense. If no, which two would you play?

    3) Smith (LIV)
    4) Fuchs (sun)

    1. Licious Lizard

People are always saying on here that you shouldn't take hit for defenders. Not sure I agree 100%, but it depends who you are looking to bring in and how long term it is imo.

Would probably be weird with it and play smith and Fuchs

      1. fedolefan
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

The hit has to be a long termer like an Alonso or even a Lovren so that you come out ahead after 2-3 fixtures. Think I'll probably just look at some bookies odds and go with that. Don't see a cleanie for any of them.

ASmith is good, the others sell for what? 15.4? You can still buy well for that. I'd consider both Valencia & Clyne as almost premium quality now for 11.0 and that leaves 4.4? Get a cheap rotator with BOU, maybe a MID 4.4, Chambers.

Certainly a lot of capacity for the week to still get better there imo.

I'm exactly the same, the only difference being a -4 to top it off!

Why do you all completely ignore all the other competitions when talking about form and the like? It's all football. Seems like many people just ignore half the data.

Whom are we talking about specifically?

I think other data sometimes needs to be looked at more closely to check it's relevance. If it is a against a weak European team or a lower level league team it is a bit different to facing Chelsea for example.

Although I did convince someone to not buy Brown Ideye once off the back of a match where he played the whole math including extra time and penalties against Oxford United where didn't get a sniff on goal and even missed a penalty.

Generally I agree with you, it just sometimes needs the data looking at a bit more closely to check it's relevance to what you want to know.

That's no different to premier league games. Playing hull and Chelsea are very different.
Probably more often goes the other way where people dismiss trips across to Europe to supposed minnows when these can be the most difficult opposition.

So Aguero scoring 2 goals agains Gateshead in th FA cup 3rd round. You give it the same weight of relevance as if those 2 goals had come against Chelsea?

I agree it is relevant, just not as relevant

The season Lukaku got loads of goals in Europe, everyone on here said he had a terrible season.

Maybe he did from their fpl point of view. Goals in Europe have as much prediction power for future premier league games as goals in the prem though eh.

    Best 3rd striker?
Defoe vs Austin? Maybe even Benteke?

Defoe best value with upcoming fixtures in my book.

Actually meant Austin. Got hesitant as Defoe could do well, but has some tough fixtures here and there.

No, I agree with you. Weigh every performance individually.
Just don't ignore half of them. From Gateshead to Barcelona and everything inbetween

Only A. Wouldn't do B for a hit. Just play Williams or even Evans instead of a hit for Friend who might still be injured and might let in a Snoddy goal 🙂

    Morning DZ.

    Have 2FT

    Heaton / Pickford
    Kos / Lovren / Amat / Pieters / Holebas
    Haz / firmino / coutinho / wally / fletch
    Kun / Lukaku / Austin

    Lukaku > Kane and?

    A) kos > Alonso
    B) coutinho > pedro
    C) coutinho > siggy
    D) coutinho > mata

Think I'm moving coutinho on regardless of how bad the injury is...

B or C imo - C more nailed, B playing for a better team, but you already knew that

If you're brave enough (or stupid - I seem to be confusing the 2) you can try the Kane rotation with Kun, depending on Lukakus performance tomorrow.

This will probably allow you Couts to KdB,Mane,Ozil maybe even Sanchez (depending on money ITB)
