Suspensions

The FA have this evening confirmed Luis Suarez has been found guilty of racial misconduct towards Patrice Evra and have handed the Liverpool forward an eight-match ban and a fine of £40,000, pending appeal.

The Independent Regulatory Commission announced the decision as follows:
1. Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1);
2. the insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra’s colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2);
3. Mr Suarez shall be warned as to his future conduct, be suspended for eight matches covering all first team competitive matches and fined the sum of £40,000;
4. the [penalty] is suspended pending the outcome of any appeal lodged by Mr Suarez against this decision.

The fourth point here is crucial- the Merseyside club have 14 days in which to contest the decision, which means that Suarez is available for selection over the next fortnight. The length of time until appeal takes in four Premier League games- (wig, BLA, NEW, mcy) – and with Kenny Dalglish’s side struggling for goals right now, there’s every chance that, for as long as the club feel he is in the right frame of mind, Suarez will take part in these games.

Liverpool have since released a strongly worded statement this evening and it’s pretty obvious, upon reading, that not only are they firmly behind their player, they will also be appealing this decision. The following excerpt sums up their thoughts:

It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

With the suspension on hold until after the outcome of any appeal, then, it’s impossible to speculate what games Suarez could potentially miss. Given that the FA have taken two months to reach this decision, it’s fair to say the likely appeal won’t be rapidly resolved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

In light of the Suarez verdict, and as a Scot, I'd just like to announce that I am launching a class action law suit against Matt Groenig for his appalling and derogatory portrayal of Scottish people via Groundskeeper Willie as stereotypical ginger haired, sub average intelligence, subservient, stingy kilt wearing morons

I'm going for £100m punitive damages. And the Simpsons to be taken off the air. Who's with me?

Everyone did, Hoilett had loads off target. Davies may get 3 and Reo may get 2 because they did f*ckall after their scores and most likely didn't suffer negative ppi's. The 1 point may be hard to figure as Ngog went off early. Thinking Petrov just off of influencing balls and the assist.

I was thinking, to reward players that play for long term, and by that I mean multiple seasons, if each season you were allowed to carry forward one player at the price you bought them for the previous season?

Just thinking it will be so annoying to see someone like Vorm probably go up to £6m+ next year when you took the risk to get him in so cheap this year. It would give the game a bit more long term continuity?

    Answer me this fellow scouters,
Regardless of whether Suarez was or wasn't guilty or whether there was enough evidence in the first place, he WAS found guilty.
Now to me an 8 game ban for someone who has been found to racially abuse someone is pathetic, Rio got 9 months for forgetting a drugs test, not even having been proven to have taken any (though you would say noone is that stupid to forget..)

My question is that we make such a big deal about driving racism out of football, if we decide that someone has been found to have been racist surely they deserve a considerable punishement?

8 games is a few more than you'd get for a mistimed tackle.

Racism is horrific regardless of the circumstance and if you are going to take the brutal step of saying someone is guilty of it, then you should be prepared to sufficiently punish them, and i would say it is something closer to a kung-fu kick or failing a drugs test then a straight red. Should have been at least 5 months.

    Discuss.

There is a campaign called "Kick racism out of football"....

Yet to hear about this "Ban racism from football for 8 games"...

If Suarez has been found guilty of racism, he needs to be made an example of, racism in football is as big an issue as any, including drugs and drug tests.

No, as much as I'd love that to happen.

But what kind of message does it send out to the youngsters that they can go around using the n' word and get a relatively minor punishment like an 8 game ban and 1/3 of a weeks wages.

As mentioned, Rio was banned for 9 months for missing a drugs test, Mutu was handed an 8 month ban for failing a drugs test, and I think racism is an equally serious issue to drug-related offences. Just my opinion.

True, but as soon as Evra has made the complaint and it becomes public knowledge, the FA has to make a statement by giving out a severe punishment, which they have done, even if arguably, it could have been justified to be even more harsh.

And if Evra was genuinely offended by what Suarez says, he has the right to make the complaint.

It would however have been better for everyone to have conducted the whole matter out of the public eye.

You will be hard pressed to find a people/country more persecuted/repressed/hurt than the Scots - a thousand years of invasion and rule by the English and Scandinavians. But history is history

I don't see a single mention of the Scots in that article.
The article seems to suggest it was a response to the N word. Kind of fair enough being kept as slaves and having their home countries torn apart n all.
I don't agree with any racial terms used in the derogatory sense for the record. We have plenty of unoffensive angst words without having to use ones that are historically disgusting.

You can't even hurt someone's feelings by calling them a cracker or honky as the words aren't associated with the oppressor making like miserable for the minority. People weren't barred from restaurants, from good schools, from sports teams,- or even worse - spat at in the street, beaten up, even strung up, for being white.

Watch some Louis CK. "Being white" is a clip I recommend.

Nothing much more than any other small country in close proximity to a larger one, I never said the Scots were oppressed. If anything the Scots have been oppressors in since the Act of Union (in conjunction with the rest of the Kingdom of Great Britain) in regards to the Empire . Before that the Scots did have a shitty time due to the Kingdom's small size in comparison to its neighbours, but I reiterate nothing too out of kilter with what was standard at the time for small kingdoms.

Wrong. Words represent ideas and values. They represent and create oppression. They reinforce an uneven status quo that benefits some at the expense of others.

              You're discussing Art/Expression - where even loathsome ideas/words might have value. That's a bit different from a workplace/society itself.

And suggesting that 'honky' is in any way as destructive as 'n------' is just silly.

yeh its bad but ffs, he used a word, alright its a naughty one and im not trying to justify it but he said something in the heat of the moment. The media blowing it out of all proportion if anything advertises racism more than if no-one had said anything! no-one bloody noticed it anyway. I'm not quite like Sepp Blatter with the handshake scenario but I do understand what he was trying to say. People say stuff all over the world, in the pub, on the street, on facebook. Before anyone tells me that its not cool, i know its not. Its not acceptable at all but I reckon they've probably got that one about right. If someone was prejudiced to me like that, i'd just call him a tw*t and would probably still shake his hand at the end of a game. In 10 years I bet you won't be allowed to fart on the pitch!

For a verbal slur? When you'd get less for potentially ending someone's career? No way

Its wrong, no one's denying that, but we need to get some perspective and people should be prepared to have a bit of a thick skin

I've lost count of the number of people on here that have, to paraphrase, called Suarez a buck toothed ugly c*nt. You could equally contrive that those kind of comments are massively derogatory and self esteem destroying to thousands of people.

Either every derogatory hateful comment based on appearance is villified or none are. Otherwise you are just perprtuating the difference further

I would say eIght games sends the message that the FA takes racism seriously. It's the longest non-drugs-related ban I can remember for years.

As for Rio's drug test, recreational drugs shouldn't be subject to tests anyway so he ought not to have been banned.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember that Rio didn't take a test. On multiple occasions. How can anyone other than Rio or Man Utd insiders know what kind of drugs he may or may not have been taking?

All the facts at the time suggested he'd missed the test because he knew he'd fail.
The rumour mill said it was recreational drugs. Seems way more likely then steroids.

Yeah, they were the rumours I heard. Unfortunately for him at the time he thought it was wiser to avoid testing which leaves doubts about which drugs he may or may not have taken.

ps there is no eveidence against suares just one mans word against another its pathetic how FA can decide this just to make an example.
Evra's statement includes that he doesnt think suares is racist , but themain point regardless of what happen its cleard there is not enough evidence to make a call like that -- pure joke just to show Sep Blatter and the world how we deal with racism. How pathetic is that, the whole thing hasnt got anything to do with Suarez

How many of you would keep your jobs if you had been racist?

Larkytown, I'm afraid you are a moron. Racism is a bit different to a 'verbal slur.' You are attacking a race of people, not just one person, not that i'm defending abuse at players. If you don't understand why racism is so horrific why don't you pick up a history book and read about all the sufferings those that are usually targetted by racism have had to endure.

I'm surprised that the FA went for 8 myself, but then again I imagine they'll drop it by several games upon appeal.

I have absolutely no idea what malarkey Liverpool is spouting with their 'mixed heritage' defense - shockingly non sequitur.

But 5 months seems radical, even to someone like myself who feels Suarez is an odious little troglodyte. Bans like that are for offenses that challenge the integrity of the game itself (drugs, gambling on games, etc.). Especially for a first offense - not Suarez's, but the first time for a ban re: racist language.

I agree with your sentiment but I think 8 games and 40K is a sufficient punishment. It's actually the longest ban for something happening on the pitch I can remember, and it should serve both to show that the FA is taking a stand, to teach him to lessen and to show others that it's not OK.

          Problem?

Either the language is being used/proven, in which case it *should* be punished each and every time ... or it will be determined that it wasn't used/lack of evidence = no penalty.

          Where's the problem?

Your logic could be used to suggest that rape shouldn't be penalized as there might just be many reports of the crime as a result - and I *know* you think that's crazy talk. Come to sense.

You're right.. The recent suspense and early sub gave me that feeling about Allen. As you also have the same 3 Swan players as me, did you feel you have too much of them?

I mean I had problem to field them. They are only good at home and, to maximise our squad, we will be liklely to bench Vorm + Naylor in away game and will automatically consider to bench Dyer too. I feel lack of choices or coverage with three swan on the bench almost every week they are away and it made me don't want to get a replacement from Swansea as I wanna keep Vorm and Naylor.

Umm.. Not sure if you see it differently.
