The Stock Check

United leave it late, Leicester keep on rolling and Watford make it back-to-back wins as Gameweek 31’s midweek schedule begins. But there’s another blank for Lukaku and a bad night for McAuley owners. Here’s the Stock Check.

On The Rise

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was a strange night for Zlatan and a stressful one for the 14.6% of us who captained him against Everton.

Back from his three-match ban, the Swede failed to take a great early chance, was denied what looked like a legitimate goal by the most marginal (aka incorrect) of offside decisions and finally got his reward with a late, late penalty.

More than 121,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers brought Ibrahimovic back into the fold with an eye on Manchester United’s hectic end to the season.

Two matches in Gameweek 34 and a further double still to be confirmed lay at the heart of that decision, but the striker’s recent form has been patchy – two goals and an assist from his last six and  blanks at home against Watford, Bournemouth and Hull City prior to last night.

The worry for his owners is that Jose Mourinho, who is already dealing with a number of key injuries, will target the Europa League as United’s best chance of securing top-tier continental football next season.

If he starts saving his best for Thursday nights – beginning with a trip to Anderlecht next week – then Ibrahimovic could factor on the rotation list. Already we saw a suggestion of that future policy, with Mourinho preserving Antonio Valencia for last night’s stalemate.

But for now Ibrahimovic is back, scoring and facing Sunderland next.

Jamie Vardy, Marc Albrighton
The Leicester City striker is another with European football to look forward to next week, but that’s where the comparisons end.

Vardy now has five goals from five league matches under Craig Shakespeare; a manager who currently seems solidly behind the old ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ mantra when it comes to team selection.

Another excellent haul of nine points was the reward for the 7.4% of FPL managers who captained the England man last night, who also enjoyed a 161,000+ ownership surge.

Vardy’s in clinical form, scoring five goals from just eight attempts. Over the same five-match period, both Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa have had twice as many efforts on goal for rather less reward.

Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid could be the spanner in Vardy’s works, however. With the Foxes now nine points clear of the drop zone, Shakespeare might finally start resting key players to target further European joy.

Leicester’s domestic schedule could also slow Vardy’s momentum – their next four league matches are all away from home.

We’ll learn more when the teamsheet for Sunday’s match at Everton is announced.

Albrighton needed just 29 minutes against Sunderland to remind Shakespeare of his qualities, setting up both goals in an outstanding eight-point cameo.

The winger missed the weekend win over Stoke City with illness and his replacement, Demarai Gray, did enough to retain his place last night.

But Albrighton’s impact when he came on for Gray against the Black Cats seems likely to have settled any arguments as to who should be first choice now. He also has form on his side, providing four assists from his last four appearances.

Shakespeare’s set-up favours him – under the new manager, 31.7% of chances have been created down the left, compared to 19.5% down the right, with 54% of crosses supplied from Albrighton’s flank.

At 1.0%, he offers differential prospects and, at 4.9, great value as well.

Troy Deeney
Rested for the weekend win over Sunderland, the Watford skipper was back with a bang last night, recording his first double-digit return of the campaign.

Deeney’s 11-point haul came courtesy of a goal and an assist – the first time he’s managed both in a match all season – and consecutive wins for the Hornets surely lays to rest any lingering worries over relegation.

The striker now has six goals from his last eight starts and at 6.9 offers value to go with fine form.

Swansea City and Hull are to come over the next three Gameweeks, but before that, there’s a trip to Spurs and despite a double Gameweek to further boost Deeney’s appeal, Watford’s run-in is tough.

They still have both Merseyside clubs, Man City and Chelsea to face before the season’s end, with a trip to the champions-elect forming part of a double Gameweek yet to be rescheduled.

At best, Deeney looks good for the short-term only,

In Decline

Romelu Lukaku
A wretched, shot-free performance in the Merseyside derby persuaded 64,000+ managers to sell the Belgian ahead of last night’s trip to Old Trafford.

He was much improved against United, firing in five attempts (although only two came inside the box), but blanked for the second match running.

What might save Lukaku from further sales is his home form – 10 of his last 11 goals have come at Goodison – as Everton prepare for back-to-back matches on Merseyside against Leicester and Burnley.

But there’s no double Gameweek for the Toffees, three of their last five matches are away and they still have a visit from Chelsea to come.

Sticking or twisting on Lukaku could be a defining decision for many – he’s in 45.7% of all squads – as the season reaches its climax.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan
With Juan Mata likely to miss the rest of the season, we thought the Armenian could emerge as a key figure in Man United’s busy run-in.

But he was dropped to the bench against Everton following direct and decidedly public criticism from Jose Mourinho.

Mkhitaryan was given 26 minutes last night as United chased an equaliser against their increasingly defensive visitors, but the Red Devils remain overly reliant on Zlatan Ibrahimovic for attacking returns, and our Fantasy squads look set to mirror that situation.

Sunday’s trip to Sunderland will give us a clearer idea of the midfielder’s place in his manager’s plans, but he’s far from an assured starter as things stand.

Gareth McAuley
FPL’s second most popular defender provided precisely zero points for his 33% ownership base in West Brom’s fractious defeat at Watford, providing a blow for those banking on the Baggies option as an FPL autosub for the rested Antonio Valencia.

McAuley was subbed for the first time this season, his 56th minute departure ensuring a painful Fantasy blank.

Tony Pulis explained his decision post-match – “I’d targeted James (McClean) and Gareth because they had played the two full games – so I really wanted to get them off” – so at least injury was not a factor.

But the Baggies’ schedule is not an encouraging one.

They have no Gameweek 34 fixture and await a rescheduled double Gameweek that will involve a trip to Man City.

With Liverpool and Chelsea also still to face, returns from a West Brom defence that’s managed just one clean sheet in seven matches aren’t exactly guaranteed to improve.

McAuley will surelly need to add to his six-goal tally to justify his continued existence in our squads.

I kept Lukaku with no expectation of points for 30 and 31, even benched him this GW, because I expected different results for 32 and beyond.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Vardy a keeper and is Ibrahimovic one to ignore?

Taking these two popular strikers I thought I'd canvass your views on which deserves a place in our team.

Arguably on current form those with the Leicester marksman will be looking to keep. Five goals in five is simple too good to ignore. Despite tough fixtures is there also an argument for drafting him in now as well, for non owners?

And what of Ibrahimovic. Many Vardy owners had a swap with the Big Swede coming in for the Foxes talisman mapped out for GWK 32. But is the veteran United striker worth the transfer and outlay. Granted he scored a penalty last night, but will rotation loom large come DGWK 34? And will he manage to match the likes of Vardy, Aguero, Lukaku and a returning Kane given United's failure time and again to convert their chances?

    1. Sweetboi
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

Gonna keep Vardy this week and then switch to Kane (if fit) next week. Probably get Ibra for the DGW in for Lukaku.

For the record I've just watched Mourinho's post game itvw on the BBC website and at the end he couldn't be any clearer - he might rotate his team for the Chelsea game (GW33). And knowing the guy he is already talking about it now so he is not publicly accused ofetting his old club win that game by putting a B side.

So if Vardy sits out 32 and Ibra 33, having Ibra and Vardy right now - like I do - is not a good thing

Been a great two game punt for me especially captaining him last GWK.

But I do think that the CL and Everton - even with that defence - at home make Ibra perhaps better.

Leicester often do well against teams that come at them to get a win, not necessarily ones that sit deep and defend.

Everton will want to get a win at Goodison. So - Vardy could be a good option this week too.

Ibra for me. A manager with an ego the size of Mourinho is not gonna want to finish outside of the top 4 especially as he's up against Pep. Ibra is rersted, be amazed if he doesn't start all the prem games, Leics are safe, im willing to wager that they'll slack off saving themselvs for Europe. rergardless of prem minutes

Ibra goal disallowed and only scored 2 points less than Vardy last night. There's as much chance Vardy is rotated as Ibra and Ibra has a game more

I've got both at the moment (Ibra Lukaku Vardy frontline), but I'm thinking about moving on from one soon. I'll probably hold until GW34 for Ibra's double, and then do a Ibra-Vardy > Kane-Gabbiadini move. Will also free up some funds to upgrade Zaha after his own double, too.

I think Leicester are pretty much safe now and motivation for their players could be a factor with one eye on the Champions league.

Rightly or wrongly I’m considering bring Vardy in ... Reason's being:

Everton – Coleman / Williams out
Palace – Showing defensive resolve, but fans will want them to attack at home, that could work to Vardy’s advantage
Arsenal – Didn’t he score a brace against them last season. Defence weak
West From – Safe and on the beach
Watford – HOME GAME - BRING IT ON!
City – Scored a hat-trick earlier this season
Bournemouth – HOME GAME - BRING IT ON!
Spurs – HOME GAME - BRING IT ON!

I reckon I will stick with the plan and switch Vardy (thanks for the points) to Ibra for 32. If Vardy looks like beating his fixtures, it's easy enough to get him back in, but for now a rested Ibra against Sunderland is worth a try.

To answer your question Jonty, I think Vardy is a keeper and I'm ignoring Ibra!

I don't think Shakespeare will be resting any of his best players in the league anytime soon. He saw first hand the results of that strategy earlier in the season, it doesn't work for them. And the fixtures aren't too bad, despite being away from home the defences they face aren't all that, with the exception of Palace!

Ibra and Manchester United as a whole flatter to deceive. This result, coupled with Mourinho's assertion on Monday that if they don't take 6 points from the Everton and Sunderland games he will rotate, makes me not want to invest in Ibra at this time.

Teams find it so difficult to win at Old Trafford that even Manchester United can't manage it..... 😉

United really needs to win all games, but not sure if Mourinho will go for the fourth place or a win in EL. Probably both and play Ibra as much as possible. Vardy can be let go after the weekend (or before) for Kane depending on his fitness. Would have no problem with a forward line of Kane/Ibra/Aguero if they were less expensive, think all three will have really high scores til the end of the season,

I think this situation is all about context and who you already have. If I had Ibra I wouldn't switch him to Vardy, and probably vice versa too this week. Definitely not for any hits.

Lukaku is a similar one, as is Aguero - if they're in your squads there are very strong reasons to keep them. But drafting them in may have a major knock on effect.

I think - if fit - the two I'd like in a few weeks are Kane and Ibra (and a cheaper one - probably Carroll). I own none of them currently...but saying that Lukaku is undroppable and has nice next few fixtures, Aguero is on form and Vardy is on fire.

Not sure there's a right answer, more going week by week and swapping.

As Simon says, this decision and plan is highly dependent on ones forward line composition. Some of us have 1, 2, or even 3 high priced forwards. I've got three, and will move vardy or lukaku to Kane once Harry is ready. The other may go to Gabbiadini. Not sure yet. I think Ibra stays though.

        Neither keepers for me.

Vardy (tough fixtures and mind will be elsewhere now that CL is back)

Ibra (rotation risk and man utd do not fill me with confidence)

But of the two I would prefer Ibra.

Aguero mighy have a lot to say yet. Watching this space

Ibra becomes a really good captaincy option @SUN in a week when some of the others candidates seem to be facing defences that have tightened up of late. One would assume JM puts out a better XI on Sunday. Vardy>Ibra(c) looks a sound move, even for a hit.

Unless Shakespeare explicitly says he will not rotate, I'd be very wary of Vardy for next two fixtures. Leicester now look pretty safe, and obviously Leicester will prioritise the CL games against Atletico.

I have Ibra, and am also concerned about rotation but think he will at least get Sunderland game at the weekend, then will see after that. I'll likely hold on for GW34 unless Mourinho states that Ibra will be rested.

Plan to hold Lukaku and cheaper striker (currently Origi) until GW33, and look at swapping one for Benteke for GW34.

Kane returning will be a head scratcher though!

          Tue 4 - Sunderland (won 2-0)
          Sun 9 - Everton (A)
          Wed 12 - Atletico (A)
          Sat 15 - Palace (A)
          Tue 18 - Atletico (H)

If Vardy does play all minutes and that is a big 'if', he'll play 5 games in 14 days. I think it's clear that Shakespeare will probably now prioritise this first Atletico match and he'll need Vardy pressing Atletico non stop.

I plan to do my original transfer which was Vardy to Luk (having wildcarded for these midweek games)

Leicester playing a champions QF perhaps for the first and last time ever. Why are they playing on Sunday and not Saturday? Surely the league should have switched the match to Sunday to give them a chance. Now 2 days rest including travel to Madrid to play an excellent AM side. I fear for them next Wednesday, could be a humiliation. What is Shakespeare supposed to do? If he plays his strongest team on Sunday will they recover in time to play their best? He'll be gambling surely. I can't see Vardy play8ng the full 90 that's for sure.

Need a differential move in my ML so plan has been to ditch Vardy for Kun (C) V Hull then bring in Ibra for 34. It may be that's taking up too many transfers that don't involve DGW players though so maybe i just hold Vardy against an Everton defence with major injury/defensive issues....But, will he be rotated, it's a tricky one.

Have both, likely to keep both for the next week and then decide what happens after Europe.

If I had to make a move would ditch Vardy to clear funds for Arsenal, City and Southampton targets. Vardy > Welbeck; Carroll > Sane.

You want him to haul. I understand your worry, but mathematically it's clear - you want your team to get the most amount of points. If Sanchez gets 20 points, that's a massive bonus for you. OK, it's not 40 if you'd captained him, but it's better to win than not win at all, regardless of size.

Yep, but you'll pull away from everyone who doesn't even own him - the majority of the game.

Final day of the season, if everyone owns him around you - yes, the captaincy becomes more pressing - but in this context, you want as many points as possible.

Not sure why some coments above miss this simple mathematical face: If his effective ownership (EO--percent owned in the top 10k + % captained in the top 10k) is more than 100%, you do not want him to score well, except for minileague effects. Obviously if you have him and a minileague rival does not, you want him to score regardless. But in OR terms, when non-captaining you want him to score when his EO is less than 100%, and you do not when it is more than 100%. There is no argument about this. When he has more than 100% EO his every point pushes you down in OR when you do not captain.

        Quick poll. Would you? 1FT

        a) Llorente > Caroll
        b) Llorente Vardy Brunt > Caroll Aguero Holgat (-8)
        c)Vardy Brunt > Aguero Holgate(-4)
        d) Neither HOLD

Need to do Brunt to Holgate to fund (b) or (c)

The aguero move would mean captaining him at home ro hull.

My captain choices otherwise would be

        Sanchez Lukaku Vardy

I am afraid of losing an aguero haul. Would a simple Llorente to caroll suffice. A captain candidate also depending on how he survives this evenings game.

        Help appreciated

I think we can exaggerate the effect of fixtures. A good fixture is great, because it suggests lots of scoring. But meh fixtures do not necessarily suggest no scoring. Nil-nil draws happen, but they are not the most likely outcome. Usually someone will score. For MUN, Ibra is usually that someone. Yes, he was stopped by Heaton earlier in the season. But that might just be motivation, and there is every chance he scores this time. Same with City. Two nine- or eight-pointers would be very welcome. In the end the question is: who is going to score more that gameweek (and the ones before and after). Ibra has a great fixture GW 35, a great on GW 32, and who else is going to get you double-figures in 34?

In case of a red card, that doesn't count.

Right thing to do anyway, he was the one giving away the penalty so would be odd if he was awarded more points than other defenders

Rules say that red carded defenders are subject to goals allowed deductions after being sent off. Makes sense, too. Finally, hard to rationalize a defender for being rewarded for being sent off.
