The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 34

We were braced for disappointment and, four matches in, the Gameweek has delivered just that.

While it would have been hopelessly optimistic to expect big returns from Saturday’s limited set of fixtures, it’s already clear that we may have to settle for consolidation, if not damage limitation, from Gameweek 34.

Middlesbrough have been quick to snatch the role of arch villains.

Brought in by 201,000+ FPL managers – second only to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford for transfer traffic – we started the day wondering if striker Alvaro Negredo could possibly grasp hero status. Sadly, it seems we already have our answer.

In truth, Gaston Ramirez is perhaps the real culprit behind Boro and Negredo’s miserable afternoon. The Uruguayan’s needless back-to-back cautions reduced Steve Agnew’s to ten men having already fallen behind to an early Josh King goal at Bournemouth.

That hindered their toothless attack and meant that Negredo would again be starved of service. Agnew’s side mustered a pitiful five attempts on goal, with Negredo treated to two of those efforts.

Meanwhile, at the back, Ben Gibson – brought in by more than 118,000 FPL managers – marshalled a defence that capitulated to concede four goals and return zero points.

With both Hull City and Swansea City earning victory, the concern now is that Boro may be on the verge of giving up the ghost.

They will face Sunderland on Wednesday for their second Gameweek fixture in what has the makings of a dead rubber. The loser will sure be relegated, the victor, in all likelihood, will be accompanying them. A draw would be useless for both.

Optimists among us will be willing Agnew’s side to lift themselves – to bounce back from today’s damaging 4-0 reverse with a convincing performance with goals and a shutout.

However, we have to question just how much they have left in the tank. We didn’t neccersarily expect profit from the trip to the Vitality Stadium, but we could hardly have envisaged such a fruitless defeat.

Over 155,000 (3.5%) put the armband on Negredo, including 27 of the top 100 FPL managers – Rashford, with 20, was the next most popular armband option. That is a staggering statistic and evidence of just how a double Gameweek can turn heads and warp the decision-making of even the leading managers.

To be fair, today’s big single Gameweek asset fared little better.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku started his clash with West Ham as the most captained – backed by 602,000+ (13.6%) of FPL managers.

No doubt buoyed by his record of nine goals in nine appearances against the Hammers, it was the Belgian’s statistic of just a single goal in his last seven away trips that proved a more worthy indicator of what was to come.

Luakaku mustered just a single blocked shot on goal as a dull London Stadium encounter passed by with a whimper. That was typical of a day of disappointment.

There’s still some way to go, but already the fears surrounding the fools gold of double Gameweek 34 have been realised. It remains to be seen if Rashford and Crystal Palace’s assets can change the outlook.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Carrick + Lukaku to Gabbidiani & Sane?
Don't look at the price difference. Gabbidiani has Hull at home, then double gameweek x 2. You can then kick Tekkers out after the Burnley game.

I have WC and will be using it in gw 36. So not thinking much beyond this gw.

Absolutely worth it IMO, plus the fact that you're going AOA makes it more assuring. You can pick up Hull's away stats even under Marco Silva and you'll understand why Gabbidiani is such a great pick for that Hull game. Palace Vs Burnley sounds like a 0-0 game.

Personally think Southampton will let you down in the double.

Bit light in the front. If Rashford or Gabbi doesn't produce and Jesus starts firing, you're gonna want to take a hit straight away

Pick one of Gabbi and Rashford. Upgrade The other to Jesus if your feeling punt or put the money aside.

Someone will have to be downgraded somewhere.

          Hazard to Eriksen
          Sanchez to Ozil
          Cech, Vertongen, Stones, Bailly.

It's not easy I know. The decent double GW defenders are not cheap. But maybe consider defenders that don't have a double GW as quite a few have excellent fixtures in GW37.

See Bournemouth, Palace, Everton, Swansea. 1st 3 all have a home fixture against poor away sides.

Like I said, it's not easy but if Jesus does start firing, you're gonna have to figure out how to get him one way or another. Always helps to have money itb after a WC for these situations

Hi lads! Crap DGW so far as expected.

I'm bringing in a one week punt using my free transfer for GW35 only. Wildcard 36 anyways! 🙂

Midfielder up to 7.2m (replacing grosicki, benching Negredo)
    OR
Striker up to 7.9m (replacing Negredo, benching Grosicki)

    Grant / Jakupovic
    Alonso / Bailly / McAuley / (Pieters) / (Mawson)
    Zaha / Alli / Son / Sanchez / (King)
    Benteke / Lukaku / Kane

Huge benching headache here. King is playing Sunderland and is always prone to score, but the midfielders I have also have high-scoring potential. Who do I bench and who do I play?

You must be an owner 😉

Stones has had a good run in the team starting 8 out of the last 10, but with Kompany now fit, Sagna due back soon, Navas playing well at wingback ... mmm ... it is a guess who will be the starting at the back for City and there is likely to be rotation

Is it worth WC for GW 35 instead of GW 36 (with only BB and AOA remaining)? You could get a jump on value and looking at the fixtures there are a few DGW sides with good fixtures...SOT (HUL), MCY (mid), LEI (wba), MUN (SWA).

Player most might be shipping for the DGW:

    Middlesbrough (Negredo, def) = MCI
    Swansea (Lorente, Siggy) = mun
    Everton (Baines, Lukaku) = CHE
    Heaton = cpl

On the flip side CPL have an easy fixture but maybe keeping them with a transfer is ok. Also Arsenal (tot), Tottenham (ARS) and Chelsea (eve) don't have the easiest fixtures. Thoughts? When are you WCing?

    Jaku (Valdes*)
    Alonso, Baines, Yoshi (Vertonghen, Rojo*)
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, Zaha (Carroll)
    Kane, Benteke, Negredo

I will get Gabbiadini for Negredo, want a city defender for Rojo (will start them this week):

Last trade before WC. Just early thoughts.

    A) Carrol to King for free (Play 3-5-2 and bench Negredo)
    B) Negredo to Jesus / Gabbiadini for free
    C) Something else.

    6.4itb, 1ft

    Jakupovic
    Alonso / Valencia / Stephens
    Firmino / Alli / Sigurdsson / Zaha
    Kane / Lukaku / Negredo

    Heaton / Davies / Maguire / T.Carrol

      A. Pretty happy with King. I don't remember ever making a transfer and the player justifying it that quickly.

pretty similar, and was planning on B to Gabbi...but is he back to "stormform" again? maybe those few goals were just motivation on arriving a new place!
      I'm taking a hit to ship 2 of the 3 (Negredo+Siggy+Lanz)

    RMWCT 2.0, please.

    DDG, Pickford
    Monreal, Vertonghen, Stones, Holgate, Stephens
    Ozil, Hazard, Alli, Sane, King
    Kane, Gabbiadini, Jesus

    0.0 ITB. Anything worth changing?
Any obvious missing (appart from Sanchez which I don't want to have)?

Downgrade defence and upgrade Ozil to Sanchez.

Kosc - Yoshi- Kompany instead of first 3 I think and get Sanchez

Similar to my wildcard only i've got Sanchez and a cheaper alternatives to Vert & Monreal. My team value isn't great.

    Need to transfer out one of Randolph/Grant. Who should I bring in? I have no WC so need to start preparing for GW37;

    A) Courtois
    B) Pickford
    C) Bravo
    D) Cech

Probably going to get rid of Lukaku as well. Already have 3 Spurs so can't get Kane. Who to get? (Money no object really).

Thinking Aguero or Jesus. Gabbi can wait because I'm going to do Tekkers > Gabbi GW36.

Always a risk as Jose doesn't rate him but must be a decent chance with all their injuries.

Guy 2nd in one of my MLs TC'd him and had De Roon as well. He was 10 points behind me, hopefully I put him to bed this GW.

    Thougts on this WC team?

    Schmeichel - Pickford
    Luiz - Koscielny - Davies - Holebas - Yoshida
    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Sane - Capoue
    Kane - Rashford - Gabbiadini

This team has 4 players with DGW in 36 and all 15 players have DGW in 37 where the BB will be used.

    Your thoughts please!

Hi. 0.2 ITB and 1FT. Going to WC next week so one week punt. Who in and who out? Maybe Lanzini -> King?

    Pickford
    Valencia, Alonso, Walker
    Sanchez, Alli, Firmino, Zaha, Lanzini
    Lukaku, Kane

    Grant, Anichebe, Gibson, Holebas

Anyone thinking Leicester players (Vardy mainly) could be a good shout for the run in? DGW37 is a bit meh for them though facing mci TOT...

No chance. Way overpriced for what they actually are (8-10th placed team). Too many other big hitters available to even consider Leicester.

really looking at it. 36+38 are awesome, and Vardy can score on counter on DGW.
      I think i'm going Kane+Vardy+Gabbi on WC36

    For GW 36 & 37
    BEST GW TO HAVE ?
    A- Cech
    B- DDG
    C- Forster

Probably Cech as you can get cheaper United than Arsenal defenders.

Cech has two dgw's so no brainer for me. I know Forster does too but he's gash
