John Terry is facing a potentially lengthy period out of the Chelsea team with a chronic nerve problem in his right leg according to a number of unconfirmed reports this morning. The Daily Mail broke the news late last night and it has since been followed up with numerous stories in the mainstream media. At the time of writing, Chelsea FC have yet to confirm or deny the extent of the injury.

The Daily Mail suggests that there will be a meeting today between Terry and a team of specialists to discuss their next steps. The injury has been lingering around since the end of last season and Terry had admitted that he was carrying it during this summer’s World Cup. But it is the length of his absence that will worry Fantasy Football Managers, with Terry confirming that it will be at least a couple of weeks before he plays again…

“After games I am in agony and not sleeping at all. I used to play with pain at seven out of 10. Now? It’s 10 out of 10. I need to take a few weeks rest, see a couple of specialists and solve the problem.”

This will unquestionably be a blow to a Chelsea defence who leaked three goals at home to Sunderland on Sunday without him in the side and doubts will be raised as to whether, minus Terry’s reliable presence, the rest of the defenders are worth their high transfer values in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. With Terry in the team they have managed 7 clean-sheets this season and after Sunday’s woes and with some very tough forthcoming fixtures (bir, new, EVE, tot, MUN, ars) this could be a worrying time for Ancelotti’s men. In their captain’s absence though, the likes of Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Bosingwa and (when back from injury) Alex, should all be counted on as nailed on starters, but may well need attacking points to justify the required outlay.

With the possibility of a leaky backline, the pressure will now be on big guns Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda to perform at the other end of the pitch. Malouda in particular had a fantastic start to the season, and is still the second highest scoring midfielder in the FPL game on 73 points, but in recent weeks has only been picking-up scraps. Drogba is also still flying high and has the second most points for a forward on 76, but has failed to score a goal since October 6. Defensive frailty for Chelsea could put increased emphasis on attack, so now might be the time for these expensive additions to step-up a gear and recapture some of their early season form.

Another worry and a factor that could affect results is the lack of natural leaders on the pitch, with Terry and Frank Lampard injured, Michael Essien suspended for the next two games and Didier Drogba clearly still lacking form and fitness. The shock home defeat to Sunderland could well be just the start of a decidedly dodgy patch for the Champions.

*edit* Chelsea FC have confirmed the Terry story with an official update on their site and say that the centre-back will see specialists to try and solve the problem. Although the club have yet to confirm many Fantasy Football Manager’s fears that it could be a long time before we see Terry back in action, as no time-scale has been put on his injury.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Thanks people. I worked hard trying to fit A. Cole in last week, but this Terry news makes me think is it worth tying so much up in their defence? I also beleive Man U will sort their defence out. Vidic or Evra?

lol, i was kinda when I suggested that i thought Malouda was overrated as a player just because he bags good fantasy points returns. I love Drogs as a player, he's different class but off form a bit just now. He has really difficult games coming up playing in a really weakened Chelsea team, So its not an anti Drogba rant, its an overall assessment of his situation. To be fair Tevez is as good a replacement as you can get on FPL.

    Fantastic write JohnFinlay.

As they say though, In Chelsea We Trust.

It is quite wierd that certain Chelsea players may become differentials, as people look to shift out the likes of Drogs, Malouda et al. Then when they DO perform, on along comes the bandwagon (gareth bale anyone?). I also think Ferreira may also come into consideration within that defence unit. That said, it will be helpful when Essien is back, to give more support.

What about Ferreira? Only Alex seems nailed-on in the defence (bar A Cole) - the other 3 could rotate. Either way Cole loses value significantly.

Chelsea were a shambles without Terry and Alex, but you've got to think they'll sort it out in training and over the next few games. If Terry really is out for a prolonged time, this definitely makes Bos and Alex (when fit) in particular absolute billy bargains.

These nerve problems are really annoying when they become chronic, and can take a very long time to recover and it most certainly doesn`t do good if you train and play. Been there done that.

Alex is by no means a solid starter as Bosingwa is 1st choice RB, Ivanovic will rotate a lot with Bos and Alex! Also I see comments about Ireland, he has stated he is leaving in Jan, so no Albrighten won't be rotated with him...

Drogba is a big game player and will step up now. 6 hard games really? Brim haven't exactly been brilliant at the back, Newcastle who lost at home to Blackpool, Blackburn, Stoke etc, Everton and United are tough but I'd still back Chelsea at home to anyone. The spurs and Arsenal games will be tough but Spurs haven't been water tight by any means and Arsenal can't keep keep cleanies surely?!

ok goose, i agree he's a big game player, but not of late. have you been reading what i have written previously. no goals against liverpool or sunderland (at home) blah blah blah. he's done absolutely nothing for 7 games, seems off it without Lamps in the team, worst run coming up this season. given all his goals came in the 1st 5 games which was such an easy run etc etc. currently trying to get over malaria, i could go on and on. i previously wrote 4 difficult games with another 2 tricky games if you want me to be totally precise. But all of a sudden you expect him to pick it up. You have more faith in him than I do. Tevez is a better bet for oints over the next 6 games imo.

I'm not discounting your point fella, I just think he's too good to stay this bad for much longer, there will be a reaction from Chelsea and he will most likely lead that. If this was a budget or unproven player I would be getting rid but like with Cecs a few weeks a go, people were writing him off etc, but I knew to keep hold as he would come good, he been baggin the points without really playing anywhere near his best. IMO the Drog will come good this weekend, especially with a weakens defense he will no the emphasis will be even more on him to score the goals.

Tevez is also unfit and leading the City 'attack' (note the inverted commas). Drogba must be the better option.

Ok folks, advice required by those among you with the talent to aid my rise throught the ranks.

My team is linked (I have brought vidic in for alex).

What 3 would you bench out of:

Coleman, Simpson, Carr, Mummy / Brunt, Nzogbia / Hernandez

    Thanking you...

These are the players I have right now (also linked above)

    Howard, Carson(WBA)

    Sagna, vidic, Konchesky, Coleman, Samba

    Nani, Bale, Nolan, Nasri, Brunt

    Tevez, Torres, Carroll

I've made my free transfer this week (and I've learned my lesson about taking unnecessary hits) but I think next week I should look at patching up my defense/keepers. I think Samba -> Kolarov could be a good move, but maybe it's more important to get in a keeper with some good fixtures coming up, Van der Saar? Or a decent second keeper. Or should I save the cash?

The more I think about this game the worse I do so any advice would be great, cheers.

Nope, not an octupus. I just did some basic analysis of upcoming fixtures and it basically screamed to stay away from Chelsea until after boxing day at least. Too much money gets taken up by their players which can be spent on alternatives with friendlier fixtures.

I don't know how much more patience I have with Fabregas to be honest, all that value he's holding...I just did some hypothetical moving around and I could have a front line of Drogba/Tevez/Torres with a midfield of Nani/N'Zogbia/VDV/Adam and a back 3 of Kolarov/Konchesky/Coleman...not too shabby really.

1 goal would be nice. I dont care who its against but to be honest i think me and drogs are gonna be departing company for the short term, too much money tied up in someone who is consistently returning 2 points per week, he has to improve, it cant get much worse than 1 goal in 7 games.

As a Chelsea fan, really concerned regarding CS's potential. I remember in the Mourinjo era when Cech and Terry were injured near Christmas, in the busy schedule, we were conceding 2 goals per game. 3 games in PL this year without Essien we conceded 6 goals, again 2 goals per game. Alex will be injured now and then, we will be forced to play Bosingwa at right back, who is weak defender, so really concerned. Oh we miss Carvalho badly. New January siging or Mikel as a center back. I think that are the solutions and giving more time to Brumma in the cups and the 2 left games in the CL, but nevertheless the situation is not looking good. I thought Cashley is a season keeper, now not so convinced.

Not bright on the Che horizon.

Nah, the way i see it it's an easy/cheap way into Chelsea attacking/def points. Not that there is any of that at the moment...

ACole won't go thru the season without any goals I think.

For now yes. I can see Bir Che as 0:0 or 0:1 with Drogba converting a penalty. We haven't got a penalty for a long time. I always thought that Cashley is essential and season keeper. Goose its up to u, but in my point of view there is no player which I want badly at the moment. If time comes and I need cash badly for some player like, Gerrard, Lamps, Torres, Rooney or somebody else I will raise cash from Cashley (thats why he is Cashley: ) What u'll do?

        Cheers,

P.S. Cashley at this moment has approximately same points as Drogs and Malouda and just check his price compared to theirs.

Asked this a while ago while not many people were online 🙁

Which is a better combination for the next 8-10GWs or so?

    Vidic+Jarvis+1.3m or Cahill+Cahill

    Thanks for all inputs! 🙂
