Swansea City confirmed their third new addition this summer with the signing of Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa for £11 million.

The 28-year-old midfielder inked a four-year deal with the Swans and revealed that head coach Paul Clement was one of the key factors behind his decision to join the Welsh side:

“One of the main reasons I had to be here was that the manager wanted me – that’s a great incentive. I felt I needed a new experience and challenge. The manager knows me, he knows how I play and what I can contribute to the team. I’ll try to make the team play.â€

The History

Mesa started out at as a youth player at Levante and made his senior debut for the reserves during the 2007/08 season.

He then took in brief spells at lower league sides Huracan and Tenerife B before linking up with Las Palmas reserves in 2010.

The midfielder moved to the first-team squad a year later, but it was only during the 2014/15 season when his career really began to take off.

He was a crucial member of the Las Palmas side that gained promotion to La Liga, producing four goals and three assists in 35 league outings.

Mesa earned plenty of plaudits for his performances in La Liga last season, with several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Sevilla and Liverpool, reportedly among those interested in the Spaniard.

He has racked up 69 appearances in the Spanish top flight, registering two goals and five assists, playing predominantly either as a defensive midfielder or in the middle of the park.

The Prospects

As Mesa’s position and output suggests, the Spaniard is unlikely to himself be a factor in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but his addition should play a major role in boosting the stock of both Swansea defenders and attackers.

His strengths centre around his passing, ball-winning ability and impressive stamina levels which allow him to cover every blade of grass, helping the tenacious midfielder to be compared to Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.

Last season, only Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi recorded more forward passes in La Liga than Mesa, while since the start of the 2015/16 season, the 28-year-old has recovered possession more times than any other outfield player in the Spanish top flight.

Bearing in mind the quality of midfield players in Spain, Mesa certainly looks set to dramatically improve things for Swansea in that area of the pitch.

Leon Britton was a key figure for the Swans during the run-in last season as the Welsh club narrowly avoided relegation, but at 34, he can’t be relied upon to play week in, week out.

Mesa may well take over from the Swans skipper in the defensive midfield role then, although he could also operate either on the right of the midfield diamond favoured by Clement during the tail end of last season, or as part of a three-man midfield in a 4-3-3 system.

Tom Carroll, Leroy Fer, Ki Sung-Young and Jay Fulton are the other players battling for spots in the Swansea midfield, although Ki will miss the start of the season due to a knee injury.

One of the main beneficiaries of Mesa’s deep-lying playmaking should be Gylfi Sigurdsson, providing he remains at the Liberty Stadium amid mounting interest from Everton and Leicester City.

Jonathan Viera occupied a similar role to Sigurdsson for Las Palmas last term, and with Mesa working his magic from a deeper position, that allowed Viera to flourish in the more advanced areas, finishing third in La Liga for chances created with 81.

Sigurdsson himself produced 72 key passes last term, with that number likely to increase playing alongside Mesa, who boasted a passing accuracy of 91.2% in 2017/18.

Mesa’s lack of attacking threat means he is likely to come in at around 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and bearing in mind he has also picked up 26 yellow cards over the past two seasons, he is unlikely to enter our thoughts as a viable budget option.

Sky Sports have introduced him as a 7.6 option, a good 1.0 more than Britton and 0.7 more than Cork.

But passing bonus could yet see Mesa justify that price tag, with the Spaniard likely to trip the tier one threshold for bonus points for 60 completed passes.

Britton and Cork managed this just twice each last season, averaging 35.8 and 40.5 completed passes per match respectively.

In contrast, Mesa averaged a formidable 64.7 completed passes per appearance in La Liga. However, it remains to be seen if his tika-taka style can immediately impose itself in the Premier League. If he can translate those figures to English football, his Sky Sports bonus potential will be strong.

Indeed, having lost their identity over recent seasons, the addition of Mesa is a giant stride towards the Swans returning to a possession-based gameplan, with the Spaniard the new heartbeat of the side.

Only six teams had less possession than Swansea (45.1%) following the arrival of Clement, compared to 58.6% during their maiden Premier League campaign back in 2011/12 under Brendan Rodgers, when only two sides managed more.

Mesa’s ability to sniff out danger in front of the back four may also be a contributing factor in boosting the Swans’ clean sheet potential.

That could be something worth considering given their very favourable run of home fixtures (MUN, NEW, WAT, HUD, LEI, BHA, BOU) over the opening months of the season and their home rotation pairing with West Brom.

Providing the Swans can keep hold of Sigurdsson and Alfie Mawson, the pair could prosper from Mesa’s range of talents in midfield and emerge as leading mid-price options.

As for Mesa himself, his all-action industry is only likely to be of use in daily Fantasy games where greater emphasis is placed on rewarding passing, tackles and recoveries.

A fit Austin leads the line imho. He's always scored goals and he will certainly take pen's too. Hopefully the rotation-risk sees him @6.5 to solve all our 3-4-3 headaches! 😆

ye im juust not sure if the new manager will favour him, i guess there is a good chance based on his goal record. Hopefully it will become clear in pre-season. Is he fully fit now? I cant see him being priced higher than 6.5 without them even knowing if he is starter could even get really lucky and come in at 6 although maybe thats wishful thinking...

Think 6.5 is probably the mark given all the risks. I read he's back in training so let's see. They play in Switzerland this w/e and @Brentford next w/e.

I don't think Leicester are paying 25 million quid to put him on the bench....also note Leicester's resurgence last year... although I agree he's more of a punt than Austin. Do you think he'll usurp Gabiadinni? Is that guy out the door or #2?

That'd be fair. I'll be keeping an eye on him during pre-season. Fortunately with the Community Shield we should get a good idea of how both Arsenal & Chelsea will line up in GW1.

Class act when fit and playing well. That game for Wales v Belgium showed us all how good he really is. 7.5 looks about right but could easily be worth 9.

I've been mulling over alternatives to Kane if he's priced at £13m and I have a hunch that a Ramsey & Kane combination will cost roughly the same as Alli & Lacazette/G.Jesus, i.e. £20m.

May also need some extra funds for a massive sofa to hide behind if I don't have Kane 😉

They've been crafty with Alli's price, they want you to consider alternatives to Kane by giving Alli away 😆

Also Ozil. I know hes not that popular on here due to Sanchez but if Alli is 9.5 Ozil cant be that price.
Ozil also 8th last year in points per min for mids and maybe new stiker suits him?. (know he doesnt 'cover' Sanchez for explosive/ captain)

You don't need 4-5. And you couldn't afford that many. I rarely have more than 2-3 at a time. I think that if you really think you have five captain options on your squad at a time, you are being a bit generous with the term. There might be some guys you could use if disaster strikes, but I wouldn't include them in the same category of "reliable captain options"

Not sure I agree, some great value in midfield last season and the top strikers weren't too expensive. Adding say 4 to 5 mill to KaneKaku will make it tricky, they've helped us a bit in midfield but all the talk of a heavy defence seems a bit fanciful?

Last season best mids have more or less the same price at which they finished.
I expect Lukaku to be 11-11.5 and Aguero at 11.5-12, which I think would be reasonable

Going to be difficult avoiding Lukaku from the start but I'm really tempted by Lacazette and Jesus. Any chance the brazilian son of god might snatch pens?

Chose choose so they think it's lose loose. Who cares anyways. Or even whoos cares. Jesus took pens last year, last two games over kun. Not touching Lacazette, great player but hasn't played with ozil and co before and even more so, hasn't played premier league before. I'll go with proven

But loose is an entirely different word, both in pronunciation and meaning!

            And I care clearly 😀

I didn't even read the rest of the comment. I agree with you I'll probably leave Laca, although he looks a really great option. Lukaku from the start and one of Kane Rooney Firmino Jesus probably, depending on fixtures and how nailed Jesus and Rooney are

I would say being Swedish and having a Swedish phone who keeps autocorrecting everything hardly helps 🙂

I think Lacazette and Jesus might start quite well, but ownership, fixtures and the captain part of it might swing me to Lukaku.

Kane seems interesting at 12.5 but so does Aguero at 11.5! What a fall from grace. He still scored 20 goals in PL last year even though all of his different struggles.

Yeah I remember he did take a penalty last year, forgot it was two. I can understand the reluctancy with new signings to the PL but Arsenal have been missing a clinical striker for quite some time now... I do like a punt or two but maybe going without Big Rom is one step to far.

I don't get it why everyone expects Lukaku to be 12.
11-11.5 max. Don't forget Zlatan (being one of the best in the world) was 11.5 at the start last season.

Which two big hitting strikers are you starting with?

      A) Kane
      B) Lacazette
      C) Lukaku
      D) Jesus

A+C will definately have high ownership, but B+D probably gives you 3-4 millions to spend elsewhere...?

I won't start with B but will change my mind about A C D a hundred times before the season starts.

Im starting with Alli tough, maybe with Kane too. I'm not a fan of the 'I take Alli to compensate not having Kane'. Doesn't make much sense to me. If I don't get Kane it's because I'm not happy with the rest of my team because of how expensive he is.

True, the taking player A to cover player B (cause they play for the same team) is nonsense... No one would say I'll take Alli to cover Lukaku... Kane could score a hatty and Alli could score nothing, how's that for covering... 11 players on the pitch, each player scores their own points...

It's Ken Loach who always writes about the downtrodden. Whatever your social position, this is one of those rare films that manages the trick of combining some good laughs with serious commentary.

The dialogue is really sharp. You are missing out on a gem! 😉

I've seen it. And it is a poignant film. But Ken Loach annoyed me when he went around marketing the film and declaring himself a Corbyn supporter. I am not affiliated to any political party, but so many of Corbyn's policies would be terrible for the poorest over the long-term (10+ years), but noone sees this.

The levels of homelessness in this country since Osbournomics started say otherwise.

The levels of homelessness are a result of poor economic management from 2005 onwards. Primarily too much government borrowing by Labour and not enough saving for a rainy day.

This is one reason I can't stand Corbyn. He wants to borrow more, but borrowing is just consuming more stuff now and consuming less stuff in the future. The worst thing you can do for the poor is borrow more because it is them and their children that pay for it in the future.

              It's not that simple.

I work for a housing charity in Birmingham. Yes, Labour left debt which forced a measure of austerity but that has hit those at the bottom disproportionately and it's gone on too long.

The Labour led council here has used the savage cuts as an excuse to ruin funding for homeless services. Our homeless levels in this city are a national disgrace and the local Tory candidate and previous Lab MP don't and didn't care.

                I completely agree.

It's a political choice to allow homelessness in this country (excluding Scotland) and it IS a national disgrace.

The conservatives always find money when it is convenient for them. £1 billion and counting for the DUP is the latest example. How many shelters could that build?

As Ken Loach has said many times, the Tories are guilty of "conscious cruelty".

You can be a good player and overrated at the same time. All he has is pace and decent finishing.

Looking to old hands for some wise advice on increasing team value over the season pls.....

I've been playing the game eight or nine seasons now.
I've had top 5k to top 100k finishes on the whole.
I look at price prediction sites and transfer injuries out early, generally swapping them for guaranteed price risers.
I haunt FFS like a bad smell through the season looking for tips.

BUT I CAN NEVER EVER GET MY TEAM VALUE UP ABOVE ABOUT 103-4 million.

Yet I have rivals who routinely reach 106-107 or higher. What are they doing? What am I doing wrong? What's the secret of a 108 value?

        Possible faults:

I tend to try to hold my first wildcard as long as I can failing a disastrous first selection/injury bad luck.

I pick my initial team very carefully and look at choosing at least 50% who have a high percentage of initial acquisition and thus might rise quickly based on this.

        Advice appreciated.

        Chief Brody.

More actively buy players that are rising, sell those falling. Monitor ownership/bandwagons. More transfers.
            But team value's secondary anyway.

I'll give it a go. Basically it's irrelevant. If you have the right players the value will come. I never try to increase my team value, but it's always more than adequate (106.8 this season) . Try to get on the right bandwagons at the right time and the value will follow.

Early transfers help a lot, you catch all prise rises like that

When choosing your initial team how do you know who has a high percentage of initial acquisition (aren't these stats only available after the GW1 deadline has passed) ? And then why are you then selecting at least 50% who have a high percentage of initial acquisitions, when prices don't start rising until after GW1 ? This is probably where you are going wrong, as players that initially have low ownership percentages are more likely to rise than those that start at a high level.

            1. Chief Brody
                8 years, 5 months ago

Teams selected by tab lets you know acquisition doesn't it? So if Lukaku starts at 12m this season but 40% have him instantly his price rise post gw1 will not reflect the 40%, only those who acquire him thereafter?

I know folk say team value doesn't matter but it kinda does in the final quarter of the season when rivals are 2-3m up on you.

Perhaps I need to do more transfers but then avoiding hits has always been a key foundation in my tactics.

Appreciate the time taken to reply

Your Lukaku example is correct, only transfers after GW1 deadline will effect his price. So if he does start at an almost inevitably high ownership, his chances of rising are lower, and the chances of his price falling are higher, than a player who starts with a lower ownership.

Obviously don't select your initial squad solely based on this, but don't deliberately select at least 50% of players with high initial ownership either. Pick the team that you think is best to start the season with, otherwise you are over thinking IMO.

              Well, here goes.

              1. You will need to budget for early hits, if you are to retain your WC, until the pre-Xmas run-in. I factor in -16 over the first 3 to 4 weeks.
              2. You will need to hop on AT LEAST one, more probably 2 BIG early bandwagons that are SUCCESSFUL.
              3. You will have to take the risk of Saturday evening transfers about 3 to 4 times.
              4. For maximum effect, you have to be lucky enough to chose the value defender(Walker last Season) and the value midfielder(King last Season), not to sell, but to have.

              Hi DZ.
Saw that article on the new chip.
AOA had the possibility to lose you a few points, this has the possibility to lose you a lot of points if not used in a blank week.

Ok I theory you get players with great fixtures but imagine the horror of your standard team doing much better, this is FPL after all.

If only six bottom tier teams were starting in a single weak it allows to take the best on offer and discard them without disrupting your regular team.

Might be to do with the amount of players happy enough just to take 12-16 point hits last season, stocking up early on DGWs having already used their wildcards.

They have a settled side and are pouring money into their new stadium.

If they sell Walker, Trippier can step up. If Dier leaves they're in 'dire' trouble. They don't have enough squad depth for a good CL campaign.

I don't see them doing well in Europe and the League with current squad. Their depth is poor. With other teams improving, I won't be surprised if they missed out on Top 4. Having said that, their first team is excellent. Kane and co. will still get you the FPL points.

Wimmer and Sissoko are for sale. We are in the market for an attacking midfielder, defender and secondary striker. Also a right back if Walker leaves. Levy has made it clear that Dier is not available at any price and the reports in the media are written by hacks like Jamie Jackson at the guardian who writes with extreme bias (describing united as the new invincibles at one point in the season last year), designed to unsettle him

If you're in the market for an AM, that's Barkley. Gossip does link him to Spurs but I can't see Levy coughing up for him. There was talk of Josh King as secondary striker but he didn't want to be a benchie back-up to Kane. Spurs have a fantastic First Team, but I don't see them bringing in any high-quality to add squad depth. I think this will cost them this season.

Problem is we want it profit in the transfer window again, making more money from sales than purchases. Barkley's wage demands and Everton's asking price is too high, for what is essentially a poor man's Dele Alli. We need a player a little more versatile, who can also cover the wings what with Lamela not due back for a while still and Sissoko looking like he will leave

If you get those players, certainly you'll will do well. Your first team is as good as anyone else in the league. You just need the depth, to do well in UCL and compete in the league.
