Chelsea have confirmed that Alex will be sidelined for a period of 6-8 weeks after it was revealed that the centre-back will require surgery on his knee injury.

The news follows today’s reports of a prolonged absence for John Terry and leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s defence seemingly in tatters.

Alex and Terry both missed Sunday’s Stamford Bridge encounter with Sunderland and the impact of that was there for all to see. Chelsea will now likely go into trips to Birmingham and Newcastle with Sunday’s central defensive pairing of Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira; following that Ancelotti’s side will face encounters with Spurs, United and Arsenal.

It’s fair to say that Chelsea’s assets now appear to be plummeting in Fantasy value. As detailed in our earlier article on the Terry situation, the chances of clean sheets over the coming Gameweeks look limited, leaving the many Ashley Cole owners pondering a transfer or clinging to the hope of attacking returns.

The only possible silver lining that could benefit owners of Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba, is that Ancleotti’s side may now be forced to push forward for goals with little chance of shutting out opponents. That could simply be straw clutching however.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Arsenal set to win the league with United drawing awat games and Chelsea with a non-existent defence. Only Man City can properly challenge but they are inconsistent.

        Check the fixtures and scoring form.......nothing bold about my claim. Also examine how tough away from home Arsenal play - no joke here that's why getting good Arsenal players are currently essential. Check out this GW playing against Spurs' leaky defence.......easy points for me. 😉

          This season has been too difficult to call.

          I wouldn't even like to predict Arsenal to beat Spurs - but there will be goals.

          Don't Arsenal usually look like title contenders at this time of year?

          Then they revert to type and throw it away if I remember rightly.

            You're correct considering the recent Arsenal but this team has grit as Everton found out. Wenger has been building this team for some considerable time and he's nearly there.

        its a close call, just checked the odds, united 3/1, arsenal 7/2, chelsea 5/6. the gunners have RVP & Vermailen to return, United have Rio back and Rooney due back soon. I would fancy United dependant on Rooney hitting form quickly.

          Chelsea losing a lot of players just at the wrong time when their fixtures are stiffening, could be really costly.

            Utd look very ordinary at the moment, very naive and lack any creativity. The title is surely in Arsenals hands now.

      hello fran, great assumption BUT still long way to go,i think it's now the gap so marginal which are more interesting among top table challenger ... any drop of point will be critical and been take over by nearest rival ...

      it will be close for this season ... therefore these teams chelsea,arsenal,man utd and unpredictable from spurs, man city AND probably liverpool also in the race to fight to the end to gain top 4 spot lol

      cheers.

    Ok, Chelsea defenders aren't nearly the proposition they were 3 weeks ago but at 4.5 for Bruma and 5.3 for Ferriera, I'd still say they are worth a shot if they play the next 4-5 games.

    They have horrendous fixtures but I'd still be willing to bet Chelsea will keep more clean sheets against bir new EVE tot MUN ars than say Bolton, Sunderland or Newcastle over same period. I'd guess at 2, maybe even 3 cleanies. Bolton haven't kept one since GW1 and that is despite playing West Ham, West Brom, Stoke, Wigan and Wolves.

    Form is temporary and all that

            Really? Cant see it myself, but Moyes is clearly at the end of his tether. I'm still annoyed at Fabregas calling us a 'long ball team'. I get enough of that from Liverpool fans that havent watched us play since the late 90s.

    I think it might be time to drop Elmohamady who I have had since gameweek 1 but who shall I replace him with for the next couple of week's Wes Brown looks like he may start at right back for the next week or two and United's next 3 are Wigan and Blackburn at home and Blackpool away which could see potential returns but I am also thinking about maybe Zat Knight of Bolton ,Phil Bardsley of Sunderland or even Phil Jones of Blackburn all look promising over the next couple of weeks with Wes Brown being the least secure what should I do, I would also like to hear people's opinion on whether or not Asmir Begovic will keep his number 1 slot at Stoke

    Chelsea currently plays weak in defence and that is not helping with a dire midfield without Essien and Lampard. Playing ill players as they don't have strength in depth. Yes, considering selling Drogba as his best games are now past until he's well again. Click on his statistics then realise playing Sunderland is the easiest game they'll get for some time. Abandon ship it's sinking!

    "Ancleotti’s side may now be forced to push forward for goals with little chance of shutting out opponents"

    I'd bloody hope so! But they'll need Fat Frank back first me thinks. Since he's been out, their goal output has shrunk significantly. This article here talks about how key he is to Chelsea's attacking returns:

    http://sportingblogs.wordpress.com/2010/11/16/%E2%80%9Cfrankly-my-dear-we-do-give-a-damn%E2%80%9D-why-lampard%E2%80%99s-return-can%E2%80%99t-come-soon-enough-for-the-blues%E2%80%A6/

    I own A.Cole, Malouda, and Drogba, and all three might well be exiting my team this week. I can't see cleanies for Cashley, with no Terry/Alex, with Essien suspended, and esp. with Ferreira at CB. Cashley's bonus points have dried up like a Saharan puddle of late. I can't see Malouda/Drogba getting returns until Fat Frank returns (certainly not whilst without Lamps AND Essien). Could be time for Torres/Van Persie, Vidic, and Van der Vaart for me...

    One silver lining to this Chelsea cloud... there's a good chance some budget kids (Bruma / Van Aanholt) might get game time. Good for CFC's future maybe. Not so for fantasy though...

    a) Malouda -> Nani (4 point hit)
    b) Arteta & Alex -> Nani & Cahill (8 point hit)

      I'd bring Nani in, he could potentially destroy wigan. Wouldn't take the 8 point hit though,
      a) for me.
