Chelsea have confirmed that Alex will be sidelined for a period of 6-8 weeks after it was revealed that the centre-back will require surgery on his knee injury.
The news follows today’s reports of a prolonged absence for John Terry and leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s defence seemingly in tatters.
Alex and Terry both missed Sunday’s Stamford Bridge encounter with Sunderland and the impact of that was there for all to see. Chelsea will now likely go into trips to Birmingham and Newcastle with Sunday’s central defensive pairing of Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira; following that Ancelotti’s side will face encounters with Spurs, United and Arsenal.
It’s fair to say that Chelsea’s assets now appear to be plummeting in Fantasy value. As detailed in our earlier article on the Terry situation, the chances of clean sheets over the coming Gameweeks look limited, leaving the many Ashley Cole owners pondering a transfer or clinging to the hope of attacking returns.
The only possible silver lining that could benefit owners of Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba, is that Ancleotti’s side may now be forced to push forward for goals with little chance of shutting out opponents. That could simply be straw clutching however.
