We say goodbye to Gameweek 13 with Chelsea sitting atop the Premier League, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s stuttering side scoring just one goal and picking up three points from their last three games. Over the same time period, fourth-placed Man City have scored just two goals, whereas the bottom three (Birmingham, Wolves and West Ham) have managed eleven between them.

No wonder Arsene Wenger is talking up this season as the toughest yet. The Gunners sit second, just two points off the top, but Wenger has recently admitted:

“This season is by far the most open I have experienced. If you look at some teams who are in the middle of the table, the quality of the teams they have, it is quite frightening. The level has gone up and I think the physical resistance of the teams who are a bit less good technically has become stronger. All the teams in the Premier League can remain disciplined for 90 minutes.”

With only 6 points separating fifth-top from third-bottom, it’s becoming apparent that any team in the division is capable of pulling off a result, as the lines between dead-certs and no-hopers become blurred. This is a season where Man United sit three points off the top, despite winning just one game out of seven on the road. Where Arsenal sit second despite home defeats by two promoted sides already. Where Sunderland get battered 5-1 at Newcastle then sweep aside Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and where Blackpool winning at Anfield was no longer a coupon buster.

We’ve decided to analyse the OPTA stats in order to ascertain what teams are misfiring in front of goal and what teams are perhaps overachieving. With the usual Fantasy favourites becoming less dependable as the season goes on, we try to find any patterns that may offer a certain stability when it comes to team selection:

I've decided. If Fergie gives a clear indication that Rooney will start vs Wigan I will be doing Malouda & Drogba -> Nani & Rooney.

I think the gamble is worth it. Rooney should be fit and wanting to prove a point and fixtures are good. Chelsea are out of form and Drogba is no way 100% fit.

I wouldn't captain either Malouda or Drogba at the moment so it's too much money tied up for me.

Massive gamble but one that could pay off. May even give Roon the armband.

Quite similar to mine (but I suppose a lot of teams are!). Main differences that I changed Malouda to Fabregas a few GW's ago (just starting to pay off). I just got rid of Elmo has he has been benched the last two games (for Bardsley) and I don't have Cole (have Boswinga instead).

So, I guess that those are the things I would be lookig at if I were you! Barton is also suspended I think but not sure how many games.

So I had Stockdale in goal until he joined the circus, brought in Gilks to cover while I used my cash to sort out the rest of the holes in my team and have been cruising along with him ever since. Now I have two goalkeepers who won't be playing and have used my transfer bringing in Vidic (Woop!)... What should I do? I don't mind taking a four point hit as I'm eight ahead in my mini league.

    Thanks!

Can only be good, although i am interested so see where the money has suddenly come from. Rumours are they put 50m on Haye in the 3rd round!

Tons of gossip about De Gae today, seems like he is going to be the new no:1 with Lindegaard his No2. Pig is getting sold as he doesn't want to stay as our back up goaly. Never really seen De Gae in action but worried about signing such a young goalkeeper tbh.

I can't see Chelsea suddenly conceding against everyone but I've completely gone off the idea of trying to get Cole in now. 8.4m is just too much when it only takes 1 goal to completely destroy his points potential.

Man, Bale wins for more reasons than seeming less injury prone. He actually has purpose to his play, can cross, deliver dead balls, header...I could probably go on, but you get my drift.

    Quick Question
does anyone have an idea what position
    Phillip Bardsley plays for Sunderland
he is classed as a 4.3m defender in fpl and can prove to be a cheap way to benefit from sunderland's good home record
but he does not pop up on the guardian squad-sheets so i have no idea of which position he is playing and who his competition in that position is or if he is first choice

He's playing left back, and playing it rather well.

He's crossed my mind as well.

Surly there is no way Rooney will start at the weekend. Fergie has to make him earn a spot in the team after his Antics. I can't see him just walking straight into the starting 11 no matter how much Utd miss him.

*quickly checks BBC Sport so can pretend he already knew the York score*

Yeah, cracking result! Although nothing compared to our 3-0 win away at Rotherham a couple of seasons ago. 😉

As for Rooney, there was some rogue rumour going around that he was shipped off to America because he tested positive for cocaine in a club drugs test! Undoubtedly bollocks though...

United drawing too many games, Berbs and Chicharito not performing recently, Rooney back and fit again.

I think it's a no brainer - he will start. There's no room for sentiment, there's a title at stake!

Despite what Fergie says, Rooney walks straight back into the team when fit for me.

He was a complete twat the way he went about getting a new contract but we need him back and firing. Berbatov seems back to his old ways and Chico hasn't been doing much recently.

      I hope he starts.

He's been out for weeks now.If SAF thinks he could get the jump on Chelsea by playing him I don't think being p*d at Rooney personally would stand in the way.

Struggling to decide whether to bring in Nani for Cahill or VdV. Yes Nani has the fixtures but Cahill has done wonders for me (he was my initial cover for Nani's injury a few weeks earlier). VdV has also risen a considerable amount from purchase, seems fixture proof and by many a season essential. Help?

Afternoon people, just after a little advice:

A: Krul (away to Bolton) or B: Foster (at home to a depleted chelsea) in goal for this wkend?

A: G Cahill (Bolton) or B: Kyrigakos (Liv) to transfer in for Elmo as a mid term option?

It was brilliant play from Ronnie - you'd perhaps like a bit more of a mature reaction from him these days, but he's obviously still a self-absorbed drama-queen.

The reaction was the best part of it imo, I'd expect nothing less from Ronaldo - and that's why I love him.

Nani is such an idiot to do it in the first place, I still can't believe it. He basically wanted to score a tap-in so badly that he went and ruined one of the greatest goals of the season.

By the way, which one is your guys favourite for goal of the year? http://www.fifa.com/ballondor/puskasaward/index.html

        I'm obviously going with Hallenius!

I go for Robben's goal at Old Trafford last season. But considering they won't let me, I vote for Hallenius's goal, with Altintop a close second.
