A buccaneering Liverpool blast their way into the group stages of the Champions League, with rotation the almost inevitable consequence.

Meanwhile, the Carabao Cup claims Premier League scalps in Southampton and Newcastle, but West Ham, Huddersfield, Burnley and Stoke City all ease through.

Here are the notes from a busy Wednesday of action.

Liverpool will have to give it a rest

Jurgen Klopp never lacks for enthusiasm at the best of times.

Having overseen a pulsating 4-2 win over Hoffenheim that ensured Liverpool’s qualification for the Champions League group stages, his response to the press began with a heartfelt ‘Yipee!’.

The animated German seems to be embracing the concept of rotation in the same full-on manner.

He threw 25.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers a curve ball by benching Mo Salah for last weekend’s home match with Crystal Palace – one of five changes from the first leg win in Germany.

Last night, Klopp reverted to the same side which won that first match 2-1, meaning returns for Emre Can (7.6%), Trent Alexander-Arnold (3.0%) and Alberto Moreno (1.9%).

Can scored twice against Hoffenheim, while the young full-back was withdrawn around the hour mark. Whether either occurrence guarantees their selection for Sunday’s visit of Arsenal is hard to tell.

What we do know is that Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have now played four straight matches this season and currently look vital to the Liverpool cause.

Both were in superb form against the Germans, with the Brazilian scoring one and setting up Can to net an outstanding team goal that put Liverpool 3-0 on the night. Mane, meanwhile, was the best player on the pitch, but had to make do with just an assist for Can’s deflected opener.

Salah scored the other goal, tapping in after Georginio Wijnaldum’s shot had hit the post. Jordan Henderson supplied the assist for Firmino’s second-half effort.

We are surely likely to be spared severe rotation this weekend, but it may well be an entirely different matter when the group stages start in mid-September.

The Reds will find out their opponents in this afternoon’s draw, but there is a worst-case scenario involving Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Celtic.

Whoever the opponents, Liverpool’s schedule will virtually demand sacrifice – either in the league or Europe – on at least one occasion.

The most likely rotation hazard will come in mid-October when Klopp’s players return from a second international break to entertain Man United, play the third group match in Europe and then travel to Spurs – all in the space of eight days.

That’s the sort of mini-run that can almost define a season. It will certainly test the coach’s selection skills, Liverpool’s squad strength and our patience as Fantasy managers.

Saints shift shape and slide out

Southampton’s third straight home match of the season ended in their first defeat, 0-2 to Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

Those last two words should temper some of the significance of last night’s loss, particularly as Mauricio Pellegrino made major changes both to his personnel and the side’s shape.

Six players who helped beat West Ham 3-2 at the weekend dropped out, while Pellegrino also switched to a back three of Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and new signing Jan Bednarek.

Should the system survive, that could be good news for managers who have made Ryan Bertrand (16.2%) and Cedric (12.2%) Southampton’s most-owned FPL assets, with the pair likely to offer increased attacking threat as wing-backs.

But Pellegrino has always previously favoured a back four, and a loss to lower league opponents is hardly likely to endear him to an alternative formation.

In truth, the defeat was waiting to happen for the Saints. They laboured to a 0-0 opening day draw against Swansea City and the win over the Hammers was achieved against ten men and with the help of two penalties.

Southampton’s schedule remains undeniably inviting, with a Gameweek 6 visit from Man United the only real wrinkle all the way through to mid-November.

The side’s form, however, is yet to convince us that they are in the best position take full advantage.

At least the 5.8% of managers who own Manolo Gabbiadini could take some solace from the fact that strike rival Charlie Austin failed to impress on his first start of the season. The Italian was afforded just 14 minutes off the bench last night.

Allen shines for Stoke

Mark Hughes made eight changes as Stoke City made short work of Rochdale.

Only Joe Allen, Kurt Zouma and Erik Pieters survived the cut from the weekend win over Arsenal, with the Welsh midfielder producing two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory.

Peter Crouch and Ramadan Sobhi were the other goalscorers on a night when Hughes again used a back three, while handing Josh Tymon a debut at wing-back.

Pieters – surprisingly utilised as a right wing-back – laid on assists for both Allen’s goals. Bojan supplied the assist for Sobhi’s goal.

Owned by 3.7%, Allen’s 5.5 price tag could make him a very attractive budget option should he manage to bring this sort of goal scoring to the league matches.

He does have previous for such things, ending last season on 118 points built on the back of six goals and three assists.

But the attacking prowess of new men Jese and Eric Choupo-Moting, who were unused substitutes last night, is likely to keep Allen employed in a deeper role against Premier League opposition.

One factor that could work in the Welshman’s attacking favour is a hamstring injury to Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss international didn’t even make the squad against Rochdale and remains a major doubt for Sunday’s trip to West Brom.

Another factor, however, takes the shine off owning any Stoke assets, Allen or otherwise – the Potters have to face both Manchester sides and Chelsea over the next six Gameweeks.

Elsewhere…

Sean Dyche made eight changes as Burnley eased past Lancashire rivals Blackburn 2-0.

Phil Bardsley and Charlie Taylor made their debuts, while Jon Walters was handed a first start for the Clarets, only to go off injured just before half-time.

He was replaced by record signing Chris Wood, but the striker failed to find the net, with the goals – and assists – coming from Jack Cork and Robbie Brady.

Dyche downplayed Walters’ injury post-match.

“I’m not sure how right he was and eventually he had to come off, so we’ll see how he is, but we don’t think it’s anything too serious.”

West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate came off the bench for his first appearance since recovering from a long-standing wrist injury as the Hammers saw off Cheltenham Town 2-0.

Coach Slaven Bilic sent out a much-changed side, with Javier Hernandez, Joe Hart, Aaron Cresswell and Jose Fonte all named among the substitutes.

Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew scored the goals. Mark Noble assisted the opener, with Sakho teeing up Ayew for the second.

You would have got excellent odds on Rotherham being the first team to breach Huddersfield’s defence this season, but the Terriers kept up their 100% win record with a 2-1 victory anyway.

Coach David Wagner made 10 changes to his team, as goals from Philip Billing and Joe Lolley secured a third round trip to Crystal Palace.

Billing netted a penalty after Laurent Depoitre was brought down in the box, while Kasey Palmer teed up Lolley for the second.

Ten changes were also made by Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, but his Newcastle charges responded rather less positively, losing 3-2 to Nottingham Forest after extra-time.

Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring early, before a Rolando Aarons’ equaliser ensured another 30 minutes of play from which the Championship side emerged victorious.

The evening’s assists went to Aarons and Mo Diame.

Just want to ask something and sorry if it's a stupid question:

If I activate WC on weekend and say I bring in Eriksen, who then rises say on Tuesday, If i take him out of my squad a few days later do I keep the profit I made?

Don't know if this makes sense...

If he rises by .2 after you take him in, you make .1

If he only rises .1, you won't make a profit

You get .1 for ever .2 a player rises. The value of your player shown on the transfer page is his sell on price

he would have to have risen by .2 in order to make profit. you only keep 50% made rounded down. i.e for every .2 made you keep .1

But yes, the mathematics of the rises aside, you can use the WC to make money this way, just not as effectively as in seasons gone by.

I believe you do, but he'll have to rise by 0.2 (sometimes 0.3 depending on purchase price) for you to gain anything.

It's never 0.3 relative to what you as a manager picked him up for, it's always 0.2.

I think what he means is that if you get Morata for 10.1 then you would need to wait for him to get to 10.3 to sell for a profit. But it's not clear.

I just don't like having to guess each week which defenders are going to get clean sheets and which aren't, as i seem to always get it wrong, and its also quite often a lottery who gets the clean sheets. For example, last weekend you would have thought that Southampton had a better chance of keeping a clean sheet than Stoke..

No flexibility at all. Wouldn't do two 4.0 defenders. Downgrade a midfielder and spread the funds better

I get this, but I hate having to choose each week between defenders and trying to guess who will get the clean sheet as I seem to inevitably always get it wrong and end up with a clean sheet on my bench

It's a good idea, emulated by many fantasy sports. Another method would be to have a single rise/fall each week rather than on a daily basis

      1. _Make

Or a rise if a player makes into the TOTW (with or without budget constraints, ideally with)

True but could be applied across the all of the players. For example if a 4.5 defender earns 15 points.. 0.3 rise, 12.0 striker.. 0.3 fall.. 9.0 midfielder.. 0.2 fall.. statistically balanced for price and position with an appropriate algorithm

Do we even need falls? There's one to wrap our heads round. What would happen if we only had risers? The non-risers would be the equivalent of fallers, in that if you haven't risen after several weeks that's a good as a fall because player prices get left behind.

I think falls are as equally necessary as risers. Under performing players have to drop to allow a gamble and full effective use of the allocated budget

No, we need fallers. For sure.

If a player is over-priced he needs to fall to a level where he is more attractively valued. Otherwise the effective player pool becomes too small.

So true. But sometimes players that have fallen in price early on become the value bargains you need later on.

Dummett, Delph, Francis and Dunk at 4.4m, Sané at 8.3m, Sandro at 7.3m, Zaha at 6.8m, Jesus at 10.4m, Shaw at 4.9m, J-Rod at 5.9m, Lanzini at 6.9m... Any or all of those could be useful in a few weeks' time.

(That list includes potential falls as well as actual ones).

Disagree, that would make bandwagon jump-ery even worse.

As an early adopter of Mkhitaryan for example, I don't like that everyone can jump on my in-form and likely to be one of the best mids of the season season player for such a low price because he's returned well early on.
I identified him as a potential cheap-ish differential who under-performed last year, and I took a risk on him. Now I can only benefit from 50% his price rise if A) I choose to take him out and B) I identify a better player in the same price range. It's bull. I'd prefer it if his price rose with his form and he became prohibitively expensive for those that didn't adopt early. If he performs like a 9.0/9.5 mil player, his price should adjust as such IMO.

I completely understand this argument, but I bet not all of your other 14 picks were a success, despite being chosen with a care and an analytical focus that the vast majority of FPL players will not have used when choosing their teams. You will lose money on carefully-chosen players as often as you gain unless you get lucky because GW1 is too much of a lottery and because the dataset underlying the market forces is far too small and volatile.

Think about it this way, there is no way that the top player after GW1 is a good FPL manager. His or her picks will have been far too random, but there are enough random picks out there that someone will strike it lucky and get all the price rises. It doesn't mean that manager will even likely finish in the top 1m.

I'm not saying they are restricted to 0.1 rise/fall.. price should adjust according to performance and current purchase price. Also, I believe every 0.1 rise should allow the same selling price

Yes I agree that the 0.1 rise should be the selling price - I've been banging this drum for a while. ESPECIALLY as it works that way with price falls. If the falls had the 50% rule too, it wouldn't be so annoying.

I think there's some merit in that.

It'd possibly help to stop a template forming like it did when Mahrez and Vardy were cheap players playing like 12.0+ players.

Exactly what I mean. You'd feel mugged off if say you picked Richarlison from day one, he performed like Mahrez did that season, rose to 6.5, but if you wanted to sell him (for some ridiculous reason, or an injury) you only get 6.5 for him. Meanwhile bandwagon jumpers get to sell him for the full 6.5 and have benefitted from all of his points too. Where's your reward for your gamble and your stellar scouting? A small haul in one or two early game weeks?

            BS.

All I'm saying is that it's incredibly bloody frustrating to find a decent differential like Mkhi, and the a week later he's in like everyone's team because he's relatively cheap. It shouldn't be that easy to form a template and perform fickle manoeuvres like that.

Perhaps removing the hit system and limiting people to just free transfers and WC's would be the best way to prevent a template, force players to have to pick more wisely in the first place and display more "loyalty" to their initial decisions.

Yes, or they are jumping on a cheaper player who's outperforming his price - likely Hernandez. In a form based price system Hernandez would have risen a bit and they wouldn't be banking so much cash - punishing them for both their bad initial choice and their impatience.

Not sound in my view. We already contest form among ourselves; the decision to whether or not we get a player. Price changes on ownership open another battlefront; whether you can beat the market. Not that I enjoy it, but that is the idea and making it on form would lead to non-differential teams going for the same players.

Perhaps I'm getting bogged down in personal anecdotes about Mkhitaryan and Mahrez etc. Getting salty about the 50% profit on price increase etc.

What it boils down to though is this:
It shouldn't be so easy for a templates and bandwagons to form. Players should be forced to have more conviction in their decisions and loyalty to their initial picks in my opinion. If you picked a player who turns out to be a bit of an unexpected gem, I feel like you should be offered some more protection from half of the game having him within a week or two. That's all I was really getting at.

This would be terrible. The points rich would get richer, the points poor would get poorer. It would bring FPL in line with the way things work in the real world, and that would be dreadful.

Early adopters of good players already get multiple benefits : (I) the points (ii) they are on board from price rises straight away, without needing to use a transfer (worth 4 points) to get a good player in.

"The points rich would get richer, the points poor would get poorer" - is that not what already happens? If your players score well, they generally rise in price - thus the points rich get richer. The opposite is equally true.

As an aside - I'd actually quite like it if the game was a little closer to life in at least one way, and that way is this: You should buy and sell players for their current market value, not for half way between what you bought them for and what their market price is.

    13. The Non Flying Dutchman

In addition to the current system I would like to see price falls for players who are playing but are off form (but haven't already dropped due to transfers out).

This will make overpriced players more attractive as they reach their true value.

This will make transfers harder as there will be more players to choose from and further reduce the element of luck.

      1. nobwak
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

...and therefore you'd expect price rises for players who are playing and are on form (and haven't already risen due to transfers in), yeah?

This will make underpriced players less attainable and help them reach their true value.

This will make transfers harder as there will be less obvious underpriced players around.

        So we broadly agree?

Prices rise for players who are on form due to increased ownership. So price rises can stay as they are.

By that logic then, surely prices fall for players who are off form due to decreased ownership. So price falls can stay as they are? It has to work both ways.

            1. The Non Flying Dutchman
              • 11 Years

Not always. If a player is low owned there will be less people transferring out so there might not be price decrease.

The rule would be something like this:

Over 3 matches if a player got 6 points or less (and is not out due to injury) and price has not already decreased in those 3 weeks, the price reduces by 0.2.

                0.2 prob a bit agressive. 0.1m then.

This would however make it difficult to have 5th midfielders, 5th defenders who could easily breach that.

I think fpl have got the concept right. Price changes should purely be determined by supply and demand, ie transfers in and transfers out.

The only thing i would like to see is more transparency of the criteria needed for a price to rise or fall

      1. The Non Flying Dutchman

There are sites out there like fplstatistics for those that are willing to invest the time to monitor.

Also the other game people play is the Highest team value game. Too much transparency would nullify that part of FPL.

Yes, so use whatever statistics they used to initially set the prices in the first place (presuming that they used some kind of stats), and reapply them throughout the season to create more fluid pricing based on STATS-BASED form?
The stats thus far would make Pogba and Mkhi cost more than KDB, no?

That would be fine if as you say they used a stats based system for the initial pricing which I highly doubt. Then you have the issue of players returning from injury or a ban who would presumably be too cheap and obvious bandwagons. No one would have priced Pogba and Mikhi higher than KDB at the start of the season based on stats so for them to be higher priced after 2 games would mean the transfer market would have to be horrendously volatile.

The current system doesn't really punish early adopters. You get the points that caused the rise and the extra TV. FPL isn't about how good your initial pick was but rather a season long based game where the better managers accumulate a series of small wins rather than get outrageously rewarded for one or two good initial decisions.

I don't really get what OP's problem is or why the current system punishes early adopters. Early adopters reward is that they do not have to consider using a vital free transfer or take a -4 to climb aboard the bandwagon. The longer a manager leaves this the more costly the player. This is the early adopters reward - no pressure is applied by the threat of rises. I cannot see any logic in saying that if you have adopted early and paid 6, they rise to 7 and you sell for 6.5 you have in some way been done worse than someone who buys for 6.5 and sells for 6.5. You made .5, they made nothing except for what is implied by buying and selling at 6.5, two unsuccessful transfers

      1. nobwak

My problem is how easy it is for a template to form, for bandwagons to start rolling, and for your differentials to become template players that wind up in every other team. It's frustrating when an under the radar pick you've identified becomes a bandwagon - yes you got some early points and a potential price rise (which only gets you a poxy 50% increase, if for some reason you decided to sell an in form player), but I personally would rather have the player remain a differential, or rise to a price that reflects their true value. As I said, if say Mkhi is performing at the rate of a 9.0/9.5 player after a few games, you'd expect his price to be at that level too IMO. It can be more fluid and more could be done to ensure that teams are more unique and less template.

        1. Pacer.
          • 11 Years

Surely if you ramp up price rises more quickly as commensurate with form over a shorter time period like just one or two gameweeks you'll just force people to act even more quickly and jump on that bandwagon. You seem really peeved that you are not getting enough credit for starting with Mkhitaryan but I think instead of focusing negatively on templates, you need to be appreciating what advantage you have gained and working out how best that's utilised in a game of such fine margins. Secondly, it should also be pointed out that this is a player who was selected by a quarter of a million managers! It's hardly like you unearthed a gem that wasn't in any teams!

Perhaps think about playing a draft game. We set up an auction game over a decade ago when we got a bit tired of TFF templates and it's absolutely fantastic. But it also comes with its own issues.

As the conversation has moved on throughout the day I've kind of concluded that I'd prefer it if hits were limited in their availability, or removed altogether. This would both slow the template AND slow the changes in prices (as less transfers are made in general). It would increase the variation in teams and perhaps slow the bandwagons.
            What do you reckon?

Yeah I guess a draft would be a good way to soften these grievances with the system, but I love playing against so many other managers and playing for OR. I love this game, don't get me wrong, but that doesn't mean it's beyond criticism and can't be improved.

Why remove or limit hits? Hits are great for the game and vastly increase the fun factor. I appreciate your dislike of the template but there are better ways to discourage it.

Personally i'd like to see a price lock chip that you could put on any one player (whether you owned them or not) that would guarantee you could buy or sell that player at the locked price. You could move the chip as often as you like. It would enable managers to hold on to a player they own but have faith in without having to worry about losing value or they could monitor a bandwagon without having to commit. This would add skill to the game and slow bandwagons while enabling a greater player pool to choose from and discouraging templates.

This is a terrible idea in my opinion. The system is working fine as it stands, so don't try to fix what ain't broke.

You have already been amply rewarded for your player's success so far. You have his points, you don't need to make a transfer to get him in, and your team value will probably increase without your having to take any further action. To expect even more is just pure greed. You have not been punished.

And who's to say that your player's points are purely down to your skill anyway? Good and bad luck also come into it, as well as planning for future game-weeks. Were those who selected Kane (2 points so far) rather than Rooney (17)showing a lack of skill? I don't think so - they were just unlucky.

So should Kane be bought, sold, retained or even captained, and should his price rise or fall and by how much? Just let the market decide - it's the best method.

KDB > Erikson on a FT? KDB struggling to justify huge price tag so far. Dropped to the holding role at points against Everton. Good fixture for him this week, but also a really good one for Erikson. I may activate my WC on Saturday.

You've missed the Eriksen pice rise anyways, so it all comes down to who you think will score the most this week.

Yeah, I sat on this one for too long. I think I'm leaning Erikson.

So there is no truth in the "Phil Jones missed training" thing going around here yesterday. Would have been in the media by today if true...

      He wasn't pictured in training.

Will have to wait for Mou's presser.

Playing in a budgeted draft league, would you prefer

    A) Morata + Abraham (Rotating with RLC when fixtures demand it)
    B) Vardy + Gabbiadini (playing every week)

Abraham could be under threat with Llorente return and Gabby could lose minutes to Austin.

If i had to choose i would go A

Ya I'm leaning to A as well, if Calvert-Lewin keeps his place then Abraham could be dumped for him if he loses his spot. If neither Abraham or CL keep their spot there's isn't a whole lot of options in that range

Clement: “Leon is fit again, but it’s too soon for Llorente. He should be available after the international break."

Is it risky owning both Richarlison and Jese (have 6.5 to spend on a mid).

    Foster / Elliott

    Danilo / Kola / Mee / Daniels / Suttner

    KDB / Salah / Ritchie / Carroll / Ramsey

    Kane / Lukaku / Abraham

Should I stick with this team and have 2 free transfers after international break? Or should I get rid of Daniels/KDB now?

Quick one, I see the flag has been removed off Sanchez.....chances of him starting at the weekend?

Will probably wait until after Liverpool but thought I'd check.

Wingers quote doesn't give much away, possibly off the bench

"I'll have to decide what I do but he's ready to play."
