Defenders have been producing the highest individual Gameweek scores so far, so we’ve decided to back two with promising home fixtures to score big this weekend.

A wretched start to the season for Newcastle United means we’re also going for one of West Ham’s leading attacking threats to pile further misery on the Geordie faithful.

Michail Antonio

A hugely impressive showing in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Southampton has seen us opt for West Ham United midfielder Michail Antonio as our headline selection.

The 27-year-old may have only produced an assist at St Mary’s, but his underlying statistics were outstanding.

Antonio registered four goal attempts, with three coming from close-range, and hit the target with three of those shots.

He also shone creatively, producing two key passes, and all in just 67 minutes of playing time as he continues to build up his match sharpness.

Up next is a trip to Newcastle United this afternoon.

Rafa Benitez’s side have lost both of their first two matches and also crashed out of the EFL Cup in midweek, losing 3-2 at home to Nottingham Forest.

With confidence low at St James’ Park, and with players missing due to injury and suspension, now looks a good time to face the Magpies.

So, owned by just 0.4% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, Antonio looks a fantastic option – not just for Gameweek 3, but for the longer term.

That’s because the Hammers have a very favourable upcoming schedule, including home matches against Huddersfield Town, Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion over the next seven Gameweeks.

While Antonio does set us back 7.5 in FPL, his tally of 17 goals and 15 assists over the past two seasons illustrates his potential as a mid-price asset.

While team-mate Javier Hernandez has attracted all the attention this week, it could be Antonio who rises to the occasion this afternoon.

Daley Blind

The potential to deliver points at both ends of the pitch makes Manchester United defender Daley Blind an intriguing differential option.

The left-back has boasted a significant attacking threat so far this season – he has supplied five successful crosses to this point, with no other FPL defender managing more.

His left-footed deliveries have also been a feature from set-plays – Blind has taken nine of Man United’s 16 corners, succeeding with four.

It was Blind’s ability at corners that helped defeat today’s opponents Leicester City in the corresponding fixture last season.

He gained two assists direct from corners in the 4-1 victory, while his quick set-piece also led to a third goal as the defender earned maximum bonus and a tally of 11 points in that encounter.

But it’s defensive returns that appear likely, given Jose Mourinho’s side have registered back-to-back clean sheets.

They have conceded a mere nine shots in the box, with only Manchester City (eight) allowing fewer.

With an ownership of just 2.8% in FPL, Blind offers enough upside to warrant taking one of our three Man United slots in our 15-man squads.

The 5.5-priced defender has seen off the challenge of Matteo Darmian to emerge as the first choice left-back, although rotation is a slight concern when the UEFA Champions league group stage gets underway next month.

But as a short-term gamble, the Dutchman looks well worth a roll of the dice.

Patrick van Aanholt

Another defender capable of producing attacking points has caught our eye this week, with much expected from Patrick van Aanholt when Crystal Palace host Swansea City.

The Eagles defender has registered a modest two points so far, but his ability to produce big points hauls in plum home fixtures means he could be a fantastic differential option for Gameweek 3.

Van Aanholt has been one of Palace’s most prominent attacking players, relishing the chance to bomb forward from his position at left wing-back.

He has produced more key passes (four) than any other Eagles player, and ranks joint-second for shots with three.

The Dutch international is also Palace’s primary set-piece taker – no FPL defender has registered more successful corners (four) than the 3.2%-owned van Aanholt.

Swansea have conceded more chances down their right flank (15) than any other side, so this afternoon’s match-up promises much in terms of the defender’s attacking prospects.

And the Welsh club are also struggling at the other end of the pitch.

They have yet to score this season and have managed fewer goal attempts (nine) than any other team.

While van Aanholt is costly at 5.5 in FPL, he looks a tempting one-week punt for those Fantasy managers who expect to use their Wildcard over the international break.

I'm kind of shocked that so many people will choose Kane over Eriksen as a captain.
Sure, Kane has been a bit unlucky, but Eriksen has been a total beast the first two first games.

I always try go for a midfielder since they get more points for everything + in this case the extra point Eriksen will get the for the clean sheet. But I might be off here it seems ^^

Confirmation that price changes have changed.

    So far at least.

At this stage over the last 3 seasons there had been 25-30% more rises and 30-35% more drops.

    Cumulative Totals after GW2&3

    RISES
    14/15 - 33
    15/16 - 33
    16/17 - 33
    17/18 - 24

    FALLS
    14/15 - 207
    15/16 - 201
    16/17 - 186
    17/18 - 132

Over the entire 2016/17 season compared to 2015/16 drops were down by 10.5% reflected in the 186 figure above. Rises were up 4.4% overall in the same full season comparison.

This substantial a variation even over only the first two GWs is unprecedented since the major rule changes after the 2013/14 season.

Great work this Mr T!! Proves what I'd sensed (without doing the analysis). Price moves right down on previous years.

      - Only one double-rise in a GW this season??
      - Players like Daniels shipping 200k owners without a single drop?
      - Richarlison c.150k NTI this GW alone but no rise!?

Really stitching up players who react to save themselves from loss of team value.

"Cumulative Totals after GW2&3"... what does this mean? What is the break point exactly, GW3 deadline? I guess what I am trying to discern is whether those figures are exactly comparable. A clarification would be appreciated, Mr T, if you have time.

If the figures are exactly comparable then they appear to confirm that FPL have slowed the price change mechanism this season. That was my initial surmise anyway and these numbers seem to support it.

What I am interested to find out is whether that is a result of manual interference (for example, applying higher thresholds for the first period of the season) or simply that the whole algorithm has been altered and will remain that way all season. If you would be able to provide an update from time to time that would be very interesting. Thanks for posting anyway.

Rises in GW2 are up until GW2 deadline. Rises in GW3 up to GW3 deadline, i.e including last night.

By cumulative I mean all rises up until GW3 deadline.

They are exactly comparable as GW3 deadline was a Sat in all seasons compared. Friday GW1 deadline this season a very slight difference, technically an extra day to this season as a whole but would not affect price changes imo, although it did possibly lead to changes starting to happen a bit earlier in GW2 (4 rises by Monday night)

You couldn't for example compare GW2 changes only as GW2 deadline was Friday in 2 of the 4 seasons so a different number of days for changes.

Not sure whether I can post external links but more detailed analysis here (excluding last nights changes)

There's definitely been an algorithm tweak. There have been 131 price falls over 117 players with only 23 rises over 18 players. People will have to be on their guard this year to not be caught on the wrong end of price falls but it also does open the door for later season bargains.

Costa and Lindelof for example have already fallen by 0.3 despite 46k + 161k transfers out respectively.

However with Walker having had 352k transfers out and Kane and kdb 250k transfers out but yet to drop - it appears with highly owned players over 10% they are protected from price falls so if a highly owned player poorly performed you are protected from falls until they reach a certain level of ownership.

Players currently not playing that are falling definitely could be massive bargains later on in the season (see Lindelof 5.2, Wimmer 4.4 if transfer happens, Charlie Taylor 4.4)

Applying what we know of last year's system to this year's transfer numbers, it's very possible that Kane's price should not have dropped yet.

It's proving easier to avoid drops than the past 2 or 3 seasons. Avoiding drops has become one of the keys to building/maintaining team value. It would often lean me towards wildcarding if I had 3 or 4 heading for drops.

KdB would have dropped in past seasons imo. And the likes of Fraser, Groß, Ince... popular pre season picks with a couple of blanks usually hurt you.

        1. Diva
          • 11 Years

A rough calculation suggests Ince wouldn't be close to a drop yet this year using last year's system unless the only people buying him were wildcarders and the only people selling him were non-wildcarders (which is unlikely). 🙂

Price drops are calculated on % of transfers out compared with overall ownership, so I would expect the likes of Walker, Kane and KDB to need many, many more transfers out than Lindelof, Costa etc. To force a drop - this is nothing new. But T's data certainly makes it look like the price threshold for changes may have increased. Interesting to see what happens over the IB.

I guess they listened to all the dullards that complained about the market being too volatile, and being forced into making early transfers. It's a shame because playing the markets is fun and is one of the things that makes FPL better than all other fantasy games.

Very true Diva. I don't have figures for Wildcards played GW2 & 3 from those past seasons compared to this. Of anyone does that would be very interesting.

I've a feeling there may have been a lot more Wildcards in play which would dampen down price changes. A high scoring GW1 could lead to more Wildcards, people with 30 to 40 after GW1 more inclined to panic?

From recollection, GW2 wildcards are typically 3% to 4% of managers. This season it was 2.9%. I don't think there has been a big difference but I can't locate exact data.

Excellent work MrT - thanks for posting. Very interesting. I'll see if I can do some fishing to discover what might be behind it.

Of course, the fact that folk have not got Hazard, Sanchez etc and are holding Lukaku and - to an extent Kane - may just have kept less money in the market and made it a little more stable.

I don't like this. Last season the balance was quite good; transfer early for value, but risk injuries. Now it seems like the gain is becoming too small. Takes away big skill element from serious players, but what is gained? The casual who benefit probably don't even notice.

Maybe FFS could make a poll to see who support this change, most probably don't. Could make a message to the towers.

I don't agree with you that skilful players transfer early. They gather the facts over the gameweek, look at stats and make decisions. Knowing that you have people who will just immediately transfer in anybody who happens to have the highest gameweek - and even a casual look tells you this is the case - causing price rises forces people into making transfers with partial info on the week and ironically accentuating price moves because you know other people will hit the button a 4:45pm on a Saturday (and before).

... or there could be more people wildcarding early this season, seeing that the number of teams increase, with the theory that wildcards do not count when adding up for price change.

... or price change happens only as a percentage of the total teams in the game. Increasing number of teams means that we need even more transfers in/out for price to change.

... or there have been more late transfers by the PL teams, with players being locked from price change.

... or there has been a change in the number of days one gets banned from price change after changing clubs or after changing colour from red to yellow to "not sick or injured anymore".

... or you are absolutely right, with this all being due to a change in the algorithm laid out by the FPL team.

      - most probably there is a combination of at least two of the options above. Patience is a virtue, and most top players in the game don't jump on the hits bandwagon just for the price change. So this whole discussion is rather irrelevant. At least until we have more data to analyse.

I prefer this system so far, there is a larger player Base now and early rises have been insane in recent seasons. Don't get me wrong its nice when you catch them but numerous I've been rushed into a transfer due to rising and falling only to have that player injured!

I'm still mulling over Kevin to Eriksen for a hit

What I would do for some early team news about now

Formers price is going down tonight almost regardless so it's more a question of who do I think will score more next two or three.

It has to be Eriksen doesn't it...

The way I see it is that kdb is a £10m player in a top 4 side playing against one of the worst defences in the lg so far - yet I wouldn't captain him for fear he'll play deep or will be dropped.

Eriksen meanwhile is nailed on and has 100% goal involvement this season for spurs against another poor defence.

The 3/4 Manchester Evening News sports writers predicting KDB will be dropped is particularly worrying.

This is highly disingenuous Jonty. It's what 4 people THINK how City SHOULD line up not how they actually will.

It's not a predicted line up.

I think Man United to play Martial over Mata. But I'm not predicting that Jose will.

4 well connected sports writers tho - they are a competitive bunch and will want their 'should' line up to be the right one.

If it was another paper I'd agree but local paper sorts journalists are the best connected around when it comes to their local club.

already done my transfers this week and then RLC got injured.
People being a bit harsh on Jesus. Played okay at Brighton and tactical sub after Walker red card last week.
KDB is a worry but it's looking the same for many of these top sides and rotation. Even Conte this week saying will be rotating because of number of games in September (7 i think he said). Got done by Salah last week!! Still hoping to hold KDB for this week as a place holder for Haz or Sanchez.
Can't afford to have non-playing assets sat on bench this season - certainly during CL group stages and the ridiculous Nov/Dec PL schedule.
