Suddenly the field has cleared again.

Having appeared to be awash with options and configurations up front, Harry Kane is now surely established as the undisputed primary target in attack.

And while Romelu Lukaku toiled in another four-goal victory for Manchester United, the other contenders for our frontlines have lost some ground.

Alvaro Morata’s early withdrawal against Manchester City has temporarily de-railed his burgeoning reputation and Fantasy ownership.

Confirmed as a hamstring issue by manager Antonio Conte, we must now wait on a further prognosis before we can be clear if this is a setback that will knock the Spaniard out.

Thankfully, Conte appears to be playing down the problem but the Morata bandwagon has hit the buffers for now.

With Sergio Aguero sidelined with a rib injury, Kane and Lukaku seem largely unchallenged heading into the break.

Despite his seven goals in as many Gameweeks, that’s a scenario that flatters Lukaku.

With news breaking post-deadline that the Belgian was struggling with a knock sustained in training, the initial thoughts were that he could miss today’s meeting with Crystal Palace.

He started and completed 90-minutes, but was subdued and failed to deliver the anticipated threat to a beleaguered opponent.

Kane, in contrast, was a menace from the first kick against Huddersfield until Spurs shifted down the gears in the second period.

But, typically this season, Lukaku could and should have matched Kane’s two-goals. He rolled a big chance wide before converting a tap-in from Anthony Martial’s centre.

Maybe the Belgian wasn’t fully fit but, in terms of the “eye-test” and pure performance, Kane demonstrated that he is on a different level at present.

My captain selection – switched to Lukaku overnight – was steered by the fears that Palace would capitulate, with the Terriers perhaps presenting a tougher opponent to Spurs.

To an extent that was true. United had more shots and had five big chances to Spurs’ two.

But Lukaku simply did not expose the Eagles frailty and help himself to the big score that I and many others hoped for and expected.

With United’s schedule now stiffening, Lukaku will doubtless suffer some sales, but those losses would be far more severe were it not for the setbacks for Morata and Aguero.

He may well survive in squads with Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus perhaps the most viable and “secure” alternative left standing to partner Kane in our forward lines.

With talk of Aguero returning in four weeks or less, a move for Jesus could also be a short-term measure, aimed at capturing Man City’s plum home encounters with Stoke City and Burnley.

But given that they sandwich a Champions League tie with Napoli, it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola attempts to manage the minutes of his only out-and-out striker.

Arguably, those jostling with Kane and Lukaku for our attention have failed to build their case heading into the internationals.

Kane looks untouchable, and while Lukaku is nowhere near as devastating, he continues to prove effective. That might be just enough for now.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not really for defenders. Even if they miss 1 match, it's not the biggest deal as you want captain them and they don't take up too much of your team budget. It is a big deal if say a 10.5m misses one match and is your captain shout.

Kane is an absolutely class FPL player, as close to essential as they some. However, he is on 42 points... Lukaku is on 50 points, yet Lukaku is being vilified & Kane is the one being lauded. Surely Lukaku is proving every week that he is the #1 player in FPL, with Kane a close second( he's also 1.0 cheaper into the bargain!) Am I missing something?

I think it's madness not to have both btw.

Totally agree Maximus, Kane seems more explosive but Lukaku is consistent and heavily owned.
Where the points can be made is picking the right captain every week, I picked Lukaku this week which stopped me from going 60+ yesterday.

I made the point yesterday that I think Lukaku will be this seasons Costa. He scores almost 1 a game but is not as explosive as players like Kane & Aguero for example. Ideally I would like to have both in my team but if I could only choose one then I would opt for Kane personally because of his ability to explode as a captaincy choice.

    11. Pieterke30
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

      Absolutely not.

Kane is the best, the most explosive, and he is essential.

Lukaku is not. Morata is better than him, and as essential to his team than Lukaku for Utd.

Just very unlucky for Morata owners that he got injured.

For me, when all fit, it's Kane > Morata > Aguero > Lukaku > Lacazette > Jesus. Jesus last because of rotation risk, otherwise he would be next Aguero in that list

    12. Cok3y5murf

Lukaku has been consistently ordinary/average from GW1.

Kane was shit for the first 3 weeks, but has since been extraordinary/above average.

So at the moment, Kane is the better pick.

      1. Cok3y5murf

However, Lukaku was just as explosive as Kane last season, so it may just be a matter of time before he's extraordinary as well, so selling him is always a risk (although I'll be doing it).

Neither are essential. Aguero has more points than both and Morata more than Kane. Another Laca double against hapless Brighton today and he'll be above Kane too. All of the big six strikers will score tons as it's a golden age of PL strikers this year. Never before has the league had 6 world class ones at the same time and it's much easier to fit in 3 of them w/o Kane.

Lukaku is good, no doubt, but MUN has had the easiest schedule of all teams so far. When it tightens up and Mourinho begans to aim for 1-0 wins, there could easily be series of blanks for him.

      1. FotnikPL
        • 8 Years

This. Just like Southampton away. Of course, he scored there but we saw Mourinho's attitude there and we should expect more of this coming in next GWs.
Another factor is BPS. It seems that we have 'Costa's case's here - one goal may not be enough to grab bonus. That will be the factor captaincy wise.

    17. Majestic Chanka
      • 8 Years

Lot of people talking explosiveness is why Kane is better and while that's true we need to remember that Lukaku had the easiest fixture run and only has 1 more goal.

Lukaku was rubbish in big games for Everton and I don't see that changing with Man U. Especially as Man U will clam up and leave him isolated.

So fixtures are a big reason people are going Kane right now as he can still score big in tough games.

I don't think anyone's polarised them like this - I've not seen anyone that's worth taking seriously 'vilify' Lukaku. I don't think we need a hulked post to tell us the top 2, non-injured, strikers in the games should probably be in everyone's team.

Do disagree with Lukaku being the number one player in FPL though - I think Kane will outscore him come the end of the season (not an attempt at 'vilifying' though)

      Lukaku is not essential.

      1. I think he is fat. He is not so fast and dynamic compare to Morata, Kane, Jesus and even Laca.

      2. He have the easisest fixture and yet only averaging one goal each. He maybe blank versus top teams.

      3. Mourinho can reset his mind to default tactic: park the bus like what he did versus Saint. It Saint, not City then it will be limit goal fest potential.

      4. Lukaku maybe will be rotate when Ibra back.

      5. He cannot dribble as good as Aguero.

      6. His weak foot are not so accurate. He missed big chance last night!

      7. Lukaku dont take direct freekick like Kane. Kane take direct freekick and hit the post. Lukaku goals are just tap in mostly like cr7. How can people rated cr i dont know. Messi clearly better.

Morata better than Lukaku. More direct even when he play with Hazard not like Costa holding the ball.

I think they are both great options and I think going without either is a risk.

That said I was prepared to have a front three of Kane Morata Jesus, and might still go this way (on a WC) if Morata is fit. I think I can manage without Lukaku for a few gameweeks as Chelsea and City have great fixtures.

Lukaku is consistent; less of a captaincy pick for me, often, but ideally I'd have both

Ive had lukaku since week 1 but will probably sell this week.

Its not that i dont rate him but next 4 are a lot tougher and historically he is a flat track bully and performs worse in tougher games. Different team now but mourinho also has form in parking the bus against top teams.

Means i can bring jesus in for city short term fixtures with aguero likely out.

Im sure i'll get him back at some point as like i said i rate him but i dont view him as essential, especially not with Kane on current captaincy form.

Kane is on another planet right now imo. The media discussion is all around how good he is, comparing his goal rates against other modern greats. You can form your own view on that but the fact its even being discussed is a sign of how good a goal scorer he is right now. If he stays fit he will be the top fpl points scorer this year, you can bookmark this.

I guess the reason why some are binning Lukaku is while Kane is in this sort of form, you will rarely captain Lukaku, we've seen it this week, as plum a fixture as possible and only returning 6 points.

You could probably make up most of Lukaku's lost points by doubling up in defence and buying someone slightly cheaper who you feel no pressure to captain, like Vardy for example, the 3m saving will go a long way.

Bottom line is Lukaku faces Liverpool away, Spurs and Chelsea very soon. Those goals are about to dry up. I'm selling for Morata if he is fit, Jesus if not.

Still a bit peeved at Mou for doing whatever it is he is doing regarding correct injury info on Jones. Sorry, what is he trying to do exactly? Somehow trick Southgate into not calling him up? I'm just confused and feel like I wasted a transfer on this, although Cresswell seems like a good option for the next few.

I'd hold if I had him, but wouldn't rush to buy if I didn't. His attacking returns are a bit exaggerated, but they're there - they're also impossible to predict, maybe he'll blank in an easy game and get 2 goals vs. a top side like with Spurs.

Yeah I'm looking at benching Jones. I planned my defence on GW3 WC & have very nice fixtures for GW8,9,10,11... with no city or Spurs & jones benched for 3 of those 4 games. Naughton, Mee, Bertrand, Forster have a great run for the next 4 - hoping for lots of differential clean sheets in that's period & maybe one or two unexpected CS's from Jones in Utd's tough run during that time

Anyone else hoping Morata's injury is either really bad, or really good? I don't want the uncertainty hanging out there or "he may be fit", " we will have to wait and see", "he is working hard to come back"... eating up 10.3 for 3 or 4 GW's I'd rather know how long he's out for & if it's beyond GW9 then would sell, even for a hit.

Thoughts on this for a -4 (My first one for the season)

Long, Mooy and Mkhi -> Ottamendi, Carrick (fooder) and Sane

    Hart
    Davies / Cedric / Naughton / Mee
    Salah / Mkhi / Ritchie
    Kane / Lukaku / Morata

    Elliot / Mooy / Carroll / Long

    2ft, .5itb.

If Morata is fine, then those moves look ok

Sane nailed? I have Mkhitaryan and giving him a couple more weeks. Not worth the hit IMO.

Looks good. I'd do it for a hit.

    YES OR NO?

Dawson, Mihki, Vardy > Alonso, Mane, Niasse

Lets see if Niasse starts or not and how Mane play

Seems sensible. See how Niasse does because the other two are upgrades.

Vardy can get a few goals but not consistent
      Dawson looking like a dinosaur
Mihki is now an expensive Fellaini

I have a defence consisting of
Kola, Bertrand, Bavies, Bertrand and Rangel. Who to take out? Could upgrade to a 6.5 with funds in the bank.

Possibly one of the Bertrand since you have two

Why take out when they are performing...

Taking out one of the Bertrands is fine 😉

      Bertrand, he's in twice 😉
      Azpi would fit that budget.

        Ignore, Azpi is 6.6
        BDavies or Walker perhaps

    TEAM IS

    Foster / Elliot
    Dawson/Jones/Davies/Kol/Mee
    Astu/Mhiki/D Silva/Ramsey/Carroll
    Lukaku/Vardy/Kane

Can anyone come up with a way to get Chelsea / Liverpool in without sacrificing too much?

Was going to say Mkhi and Atsu to Salah and fodder but I like this more as it solves the problem of having keeper and defender from WB.

Chelsea possibly without Morata and Liverpool tough fixtures... I wouldn't be in a rush

      Luka to 4.5m forward
      Mkhi to Coutinho
      Tom to Hazard

      This may be possible

    Keane | Cresswell | Davies

    Sane | Silva | Ramsey | Xhaka

    Morata | Rooney | Kane

Subs: Elliot | Hegazi | GroB | Kiko Fermenia
