An emphatic win for Chelsea books their place in the Champions League knock-out stages, while a defeat for Manchester United ends up doing little to hamper their own hopes of European progress.

Crucially, both managers are able to rotate their squads as the packed pre-Christmas schedule looms ever larger.

Here are the notes from Wednesday’s continental action.

Chelsea cruise mostly good news

Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Qarabag in Azerbaijan ticked many a Fantasy box, if not all.

Key asset Alvaro Morata, at 24.1% the most owned Fantasy Premier League player in the Blues squad, spent much of the match on the bench, only coming on for Eden Hazard after 65 minutes.

That will have pleased the 131,000+ managers who have bought the Spanish striker this week, making him the third most transferred-in player ahead of Gameweek 13.

The in-form Hazard, meanwhile, shone in a front three that also included Pedro and Willian, opening the scoring from the penalty spot before setting up Chelsea’s second goal.

That was scored by Willian, who ended up with a brace of both goals and assists. The Brazilian was twice fouled in the penalty area – Cesc Fabregas dispatched the second spot-kick with Hazard already replaced – and rounded off the scoring with a rasping drive from the edge of the box, Pedro providing the assist.

The win confirmed Chelsea’s progress into the Champions League knock-out stages with a match to spare, but coach Antonio Conte won’t have the luxury of making wholesale changes for the final fixture – if he wants his team to win the group, that is.

The Blues will likely need a draw at home to Atletico Madrid to top Group C, meaning Conte may choose to manage his squad for the two matches – at home to Newcastle and away at West Ham – that bookend the early December decider.

Rotation, in fact, played a part last night, with regular starters Marcos Alonso and N’Golo Kante replaced after 58 and 75 minutes respectively, while young defender Andreas Christensen was an unused sub.

The Danish international has started the last two league matches, providing 13 points from two clean sheets for his 0.5% ownership. Priced at just 5.4, he is the cheapest route into a defence that’s conceded only two goals in four matches – should Conte continue to pick him for domestic duties.

The coach’s pre-match comments suggested that he will.

“In every game I have to try to make the best decision for the team and I think in this situation Christensen deserves to play. Christensen is playing very well, but we have to play a lot of games – we play every three days – and I need all the players.”

David Luiz, still owned by 11.9% of FPL managers despite making way for Christensen for the last two Gameweeks, replaced the Dane last night, suggesting the roles will be reversed come Saturday evening’s vital trip to Liverpool.

Defeat no great loss for United

Things, on the face of it, were rather less satisfactory for Man United.

Needing just a point in Basel to confirm top spot in Group A, Jose Mourinho’s men failed to turn first-half superiority into goals and then succumbed to a late strike from the Swiss that kept their own qualification hopes very much alive.

United will now host CSKA Moscow in early December – a match sandwiched between a trip to Arsenal and the Manchester derby – with the group seemingly still finely poised.

In reality, however, the Russians will have to win the fixture by seven goals to deny United progress to the knock-out stages and Mourinho will surely rotate as a result.

The coach certainly mixed and matched last night, making seven changes from the side that beat Newcastle at the weekend.

One notable player retained from that 4-1 win was Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman’s explosive Gameweek 12 return from injury, involving a goal, an assist and two bonus for 12 points, has prompted a surge in sales, with more than a quarter of a million new managers making him the most popular pick of the week.

His 13.8% ownership might not have been overly pleased to see their man back in action for the second time in five days, but he survived intact and was again the driving force as United dominated their defensive hosts through to the interval.

That they reached half-time still goalless was down to the profligacy of Romelu Lukaku, who spurned both a one-on-one with the keeper and a free header, and the woodwork, which was hit twice.

A Marouane Fellaini header brushed the outside of the post before a Marcos Rojo long-range effort was deflected onto the crossbar as the half ended.

Pogba’s withdrawal after 66 minutes both dampened United’s attacking impetus and encouraged the Swiss to be more expansive, with their late winner reward for a markedly improved second-half showing.

Mourinho’s selections provided a few clues as to the likely line-up when Brighton visit on Saturday.

Marcus Rashford (9.0%) was dropped to the bench before replacing Jesse Lingard in the 64th minute, while David de Gea, Ashley Young and Juan Mata didn’t even make the squad.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was another left out completely – the second time in a week the Armenian has been snubbed by Mourinho and a key reason why he has been sold by more than 110,000 managers ahead of Gameweek 13.

The main question remains the make-up of the centre of defence.

Rojo returned from injury and formed a solid partnership with Chris Smalling. Both are priced at 5.4 and could well be back in action on Saturday, with Phil Jones already ruled out by his manager earlier in the week and Eric Bailly still doubtful.

The alternative is Victor Lindelof, who was on the bench last night, partnering Smalling as he did last weekend, although the Swede is yet to turn in a truly convincing performance in his rare league outings.

At present, the safest option appears to be Smalling, who has started the last six matches in the league, though there is clear uncertainty in the back four, promoting De Gea’s stock in goal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, continued his own recovery from injury with a 26-minute cameo in place of the industrious Anthony Martial, though Lukaku – the only FPL forward to have played every minute of the league season – was again afforded the full 90 minutes by his manager.

    Fab (Elliot)
    Azpi Monreal Ota Mee (Hune)
    Salah Sterling Shaq (Obiang King)
    Vardy Jesus Kane

Next week > Vardy + Shaqiri to Niasse + Hazard

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    What are Jones owners doing?

Who are the best replacements - among budget, similarly priced and premium options?

And for everyone - are you looking to put a little more cash in defence for December with Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea among those with a favourable schedule - while the calendar stiffens for budget defences such as Burnley (later in December) and Bournemouth.

Keeping as Cresswell or Ward are on my bench to come in for him. I also couldn’t find a good enough replacement worth a hit for 5.5 or under

I'd be getting rid on a FT if hadn't already done Jesus to Morata

Probably not worth it for a hit unless your defense is screwed.

wat, ars, MCI in the next three are not great and can see them conceding.

Otamendi looks a good three week bet to cover if you wanted him back.

Burnley look to have good fixtures up until the 23rd

Yep the Burnley schedule is great up until xmas - but that festive schedule is awful.

Bournemouth's though gets pretty bad much earlier.

They are both pretty horrendous agreed. I can't really see any teams with that favorable fixtures over the whole period though :/

Alonso is nailed on in my team from next week.

After considering Arsenal, City & Spurs options I came to the conclusion that Otamendi is clearly the standout option as he is the cheapest nailed on defender with attacking threat from those 3 teams.

So for me it’s Alonso & Otamendi with a bunch of other cheapies like Burnley, Leicester, Brighton etc.

I'm strongly minded to keep unless Jose tells me he's out for multiple weeks. A transfer now will almost certainly be 4 points thrown away somewhere down the line and I don't see any replacements this week outside Man Utd being worth a 4 point hit - and the replacement will probably need to be transferred out once Jones is back. I'll let my 4th defender take the strain this week and for the odd week over the Xmas period too.

I'm making the move to Otamendi for a hit possibly. Think it'll pay off over the next few.

With Stones out, City's form, Otamendi's threat and clean sheet prospects I'd be surprised if he doesn't earn back that hit at some point over GWK 13-15.

Agreed. I'm doing it for a hit. Paid 5.2 for Jones. If 5.0 I'd be more hesitant. Tough fixtures after Brighton for us. Could easily concede in all 3.

Same here, espcially since I have Niasse on the 2 gm suspension, squad is starting to look thin so opting for the most nailed on/good injury history defenders I can find.

City's schedule is not too bad either.

Facing a problem now trying to get Otamendi in: need a -4 or -8 hit to shift funds from aguero to Jones. Niasse the one I want but he is bannen and T Carroll will be Hazard but he doesnt have the best fixture.

Definitely want to bring in a Chelsea defender next week aswell.

      Any advice?

He's got to go. He's feasibly a risk next 2-3 Gameweeks given the compressed schedule. Will have to be reintroduced to the side and build fitness.

Bringing Walker or Otamendi in I think, though I can see the sidegrade to big Mike Smalling being of interest.

I'm going cheaper and bringing in Daniels for Jones. Ol' Charlie has wonderful fixtures and I love owning him - always great backing a defender who offers attacking returns from open play. The move also facilitates Sterling to Sane, a plunge I feel I have to make.

Longer term - e.g. into December - yes, I'll be looking at upgrading my defence. I have a very cheap defence currently to allow Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Salah etc. But one of those three strikers will become a cheaper asset in a couple of weeks (probably Lukaku out) and money will move to the backline.

I've always been a champion of top-heavy teams, can't get on board with three premium defenders etc, but think I'll be needing at least one come Christmas time. Arsenal defenders look well priced.

TL/DR - The Charlie Daniels love affair continues.

Benching, his trade price for me is 5.2. No doubt I'd want him back after the City game so I'd be looking at finding an extra 0.3 or possibly 0.2 (if he drops). I brought in Naughton a few weeks ago so he will come off my bench and play BOU, which isn't ideal. Next week Naughton to Mustafi, who will hopefully cover for Jones through those bad fixtures.

With 3 games in a week rotation is a massive threat. Think most of my team will be ok except the 3 city players. Sterling, Sane, Aguero. Which means I need a decent bench to cover. Unfortunately I have Niasse and Mbemba on that bench plus Duffy vs ManU. So a hit for Jones seems worth doing.

Other 2 defenders are Daniels & Ward already, so I either double up with Mee or go with Mustafi who has good fixtures for next 2 at least?

Transferred to Ota last night, would've liked Walker but couldn't afford. Given their short term fixtures after this week, I don't think he's a must and likely would've been rotated anyway over Xmas. May look to get him again in the new year.

I don't own him but if I did I would sell him. United have now 5 central defenders capable of being first team regulars! This is crazy and says a lot about Jose. Anyway I think the smart money is elsewhere Daniels, Duffy, Christensen is a calculated risk I think. If money not an issue Alonso and Otamendi the best options

Yes, between Maguire and Otamendi for me. Been watching Maguire closely and he is a real threat when in the box, however Ota has lightly less threat but better clean sheet potential

Thats what im thinking. Ota would require a hit from me where Maguire would not. Half tempted to keep amd assess next week.

Is alli -> sane worth -4?

I think it very well could be. A fully rested sane has a great chance of getting another double digit haul this weekend while I would be kicking myself when alli gets another 2/3 pointer. Can anyone talk me out of it?

I don't think selling Alli to any player before WBA is worth a -4

Very tempted myself. A reason against would Alli played better against Dortmund, and Spurs' have good upcoming fixtures. Would be great to get on him early.

Yes, because it's not only about this week, but the following weeks as well. Saves a FT/possible -4 down the line.

If you really want specyfic player and I believe that he will deliver points - just do it. I did Eriksen -> Salah (-4) and the only thing I regret that I did it so late...

I wonder given Conte's previous comments this season about Morata still adjusting to the schedule whether he will start all of GWK 13-15. I'm fearing a benching in one.

i was worried about that but he only played 25 mins las night so rekcon he will start but get taken off early against swansea if theyre winning

Yeh, i tend to view fixture blocks as just that - blocks. So for teams/players with high rotation risks, im hoping ill get decent minutes/returns across the block as a whole.

Obviously City assets are most at risk as we've seen, but the other top teams are also at risk. For Morata i would expect to see him at least hauled off early in 1 and maybe a benching too, but with such a great set of coming fixtures im prepared to take it on the chin for the hope of good returns over the next 10 or so.

he didn't start, only played 30 minutes in a game that was done already. Arguably the freshest of the forwards for Liverpool or is this a fishing for bites? If so, I've fallen for it

Expect we'll see 70-75 minutes for Bats if the game looks sewn up but it is a concern, having said that, the major plus with him is that they have hardly anyone else to play in his exact position, I can see Hazard getting a rest personally with Willian/Pedro to come in as well.

    Froster : Elliot
Stones** Azpi Daniels : Ward Hun

I was thinking of doing Stones to Otamendi and Diouf to Wilson for a hit.

Two main Midfielders are Salah & Sterling, which 3 should fill the rest:

    A) Sterling, Richarlison, Choupo-Moting
    or
    B) Pogba, Richarlison, Choupo-Moting
    or
    C) Sterling, Pogba, Loftus-Cheek

    Kane & Morata up top.

A & B will mean 5 man Midfields most of the time, C would be a bit more rotation between 4th/5th defender, 5th mid & 3rd striker.

Not quite. Depends how much Basel win by. It would be a 3 way tie on 12 points.

Basel could beat Benfica by 20 and it wouldn't matter as it's only the head to head record of the tied teams that count towards any tie breaker.

It would matter. Because if United lose, all teams are tied on 12 points. In a 3 way tie, it goes to GD and GS

            • 8 Years

It's only the goal difference of the games of the tied teams, goal difference from games against Benfica won't be included in that.

Seen as I'm not going to get priced out of moves I want to do, how does this look?

This gwk: Aguero - > Morata

Gwk 14: Jones, Sterling, Vardy - > Alonso, Hazard, Wilson

Hopefully I won't be forced to do the move before everyone has played but I'd imagine one of Hazard/Wilson will rise before saturday

    Elliot (Foster)
    Mawson, Daniels, Kolasinac (Rosenoir, Hunemeir)
    Eriksen, Sterling, Richarlison, Salah (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku, Murray

Save the transfer and have two next week or drop someone? Sterling out? A defender out? Only got .2 in the bank

Was going to do Sterling to Pogba but Mourinho looks to be handling him carefully and bringing him off after 60mins.

Appreciate Sterling my miss one of the next few games, but City’s fixtures are superb and even coming off the bench Sterling can pick up points.

    Pope - Elliot
    Jones - Davies - Mee - Fernandez - Daniels
    Silva - Salah - Richarlison - Ritchie - RLC
    Kane - Aguero - Vardy

    1FT & 0.1ITB.

What to do? Don't like my team as I got problems with Jones, Davies & Aguero. Ritchie & Vardy also stinking up my team. Also want to get Sane, but there is no easy way to get him in... Think I will keep Davies and Aguero for now (will play 1 of the next 2 at least), but may get rid of Jones.

Just after some advice please. 1ft & 0.2itb
I will probably use my ft = Stones out & Otamendi in - will leave 0itb

    Elliott (Lossl)
    Azpi, Otamendi, Mee (Fernandez, Jones)
Salah, Sane (c), Sterling, Richarlison (Carroll)
    Kane (vc), Morata, Abraham

Anything worth a hit or 2:
    (a) Jones out - Daniels in (play over Mee) for a -4 hit
    (b) Carroll out - RLC in (play over Abraham) for a -4 hit
    (c) Jones & Abraham out - Daniels & Wilson in for a -8 hit
    (d) Fernandez & Abraham out - Daniels & DCL in for a -8 hit
    (e) play as is & take no hits

    Thoughts & thanks.
