Scout Notes – Lingard and Pogba Topple Toffees

Paul Pogba revives his Fantasy stock, though Jesse Lingard’s rapid ascent as a cut-price midfield option dominates proceedings as Manchester United ease through the gears to see off Everton.

Lingard’s sublime second strike for the visitors at Goodison means he now has seven goals and two assists from the last nine Gameweeks.

The reaction from Fantasy Premier League managers has been instant. Lingard is the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 23, with 42,000+ making the move. That has seen his price rise to 6.2 overnight, with a further rise looking likely prior to the next deadline.

Lingard had already proved a popular figure even before his effort on Merseyside.

He was signed by 94,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline and was second only to Roberto Firmino for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 21, claiming over 303,000 new owners.

It’s difficult to question the move for Lingard at present. Although shifted from a No 10 position to a role on the left at Goodison Park, he still managed to float into central areas and was only denied a second goal by a superb Jordan Pickford save.

Indeed, since cementing a run of starts from Gameweek 14 onwards, his total of 13 shots on target is matched only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders. He easily tops the United ranks for shots over that period and is also second only to Juan Mata for chances created.

That combined threat and creativity, coupled with a modest price tag, creates a very strong case for inclusion in our midfields at this time, even with competition so fierce.

And yet Pogba also used Monday’s match to highlight that he cannot be totally overlooked.

Restricted to just one penalty area touch in his three appearances since returning from suspension in Gameweek 19, Pogba was given more freedom to join the attack against Everton.

The inclusion of Ander Herrera in the starting line-up allowed Pogba to influence matters in attack and he had eight touches in the box, including two of his four shots on goal.

Pogba ended the match with two assists and a maximum bonus return to deliver a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12. However, he is still without a goal in seven starts.

The Frenchman was sold by 73,000+ ahead of Monday’s match, losing 69,000+ in net ownership over the last two Gameweeks.

The emergence of Lingard will do little to reverse that trend, though with an Old Trafford meeting with Stoke City up next, there is surely an incentive for his remaining 633,000+ manages to sit tight.

Trips to Burnley and Spurs then follow – both altogether more testing fixtures for United’s attack.

United Defence Back on Track

A run of just one clean sheet in seven was halted by the goalless draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21. With another clean sheet achieved at Everton, confidence in Jose Mourinho’s backline is being restored.

David De Gea continues to stretch out in front in the overall goalkeeper standings on 114 points, edging ahead of Burnley’s Nick Pope for points per match (5.2 vs 4.9).

Phil Jones – at 5.6 to De Gea’s 5.9 – is the alternative cover in the United defence.

Surprisingly, the centre-back started again for a sixth successive Gameweek, destroying the theory that he may struggle to chain appearances together over this festive period.

That should reassure us on his prospects from this point on, with a clean sheet against the Potters in Gameweek 24 on the cards.

Jones is currently the most signed defender ahead of Gameweek 24.

However, Mourinho’s new outlook on Luke Shaw also has to be considered. The left-back has now started and completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Priced at just 4.9, if Shaw can show that he has cemented a starting role, there is no question that he is another asset to consider.

Concerns Mount for Calvert-Lewin

While United’s assets enjoyed a revival in Monday’s meeting, confidence in Everton as a source of Fantasy talent took a blow.

Wayne Rooney‘s recall to the starting XI failed to produce returns for a player now part of 922,000+ FPL squads. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a rest with Oumar Niasse leading the Toffees attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s potential as a cut-price third or even second striker will come under scrutiny from this point. He has produced just a single goal in six Gameweeks and, with Sam Allardyce confirming a bid for Cenk Tosun, it’s clear that his role and minutes could soon be reduced.

Everton failed to register a shot on target against United, with Allardyce making it clear that the club is moving to address matters in attack.

“We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We’re trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals.”

In defence, Jonjoe Kenny was also handed a rest after struggling in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21. It remains to be seen if he is handed a recall over Mason Holgate at right-back for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, with a visit to Spurs to follow in Gameweek 23.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Perfect timing for us though with the 7:45pm/8:00pm kick offs - I'm about to hit the sack and when I wake up they should be just getting started... 🙂

People who live in the Republic of Ireland don't refer to their country as the Republic of Ireland they all just say 'Ireland' , people from Northern Ireland want to be differentiated from the Republic so they make sure to say Northern Ireland in most cases.

And if you grew up in Belfast, you'll know what I mean if I say most who recognise as Irish don't tend to come out with "Ireland is part of the UK". That would generally be more someone who recognises as British.

You just wouldn't assume it meant Northern for a start.

Seeing as 75% of the Irish population are in the Republic and half the population of the North which is the other 25% don't wish to be considered part of the UK i think its fair to say that you should never assume someone means Northern Ireland if they say Ireland.

          Republic of Ireland population: 4.7m
          Northern Ireland population: 1.8m

So if you say to someone from Ireland “FYI, you’re part of the UK..”, you’re probably wrong.

Plus, I’d agree with Sanchez that Northern Ireland is commonly referred to as Northern Ireland while Republic of Ireland is commonly referred to as Ireland.

Go cheapest possible starter. Bury him on the bench.

Makes absolutely no sense getting any of the 5-6m strikers (either based on ppg or playing time) when there are so many better defenders available sub 5.3m.

Quaner means my 5th mid price - wise is Lingard and can have Zanka, Dunk and Ogbonna as rotating 4th defender if I want.

Free Hit in play, so not allowed to

Matches 2 days apart whereas there will be an opportunity (Kun, Salah or Sanchez) to play two matches SAT / WED in a different DGW

I chose to tc son instead ! Hardly anyone in my league has him , I may live to regret it but I have seen people get 3 pts total from a tc score before !! If I can get an assist in each of the games and maybe a bonus point too I’ll take it !! If Kane had not been ill of course I would have played it on him !

High as possible. I’d be delighted if he scored 5 goals. Relatively low number of triple captainers, especially compared to owners not captainers and non-owners. A captainer’s ranking would shoot right up.

The only other thing to think about is who else has involvement in those 5 goals? If 5 Eriksen assists, I’d be a very happy camper.

I just got rid for Arnautovic... in his (Lingard) next 7 fixtures, 4 are away to Burnley, Spurs, Newcastle, Palace and the 3 home fixtures are Huddersfield, Chelsea, Liverpool. Only Newcastle, Huddersfield, and perhaps Palace stand out to me.

WHEREAS, Arnie seems to have great fixtures with the only standout 'tough games' being Spurs and Liverpool away... and possibly Burnley at home.

Agreed. If they pay up, I think we would sell provided we got a replacement.

I think that’s why Coutinho has been playing so well.

Liverpool have granted him his wish and knows it’s only Barca holding up the deal by being right

Was always inevitable mate. Been saying for years he's Barça in the making. Amazing player. I'd put only kdb ahead of him in the league atm.

Of course it will, unless they sign an outstanding replacement. Perhaps not appreciably, but enough so as we notice.

Coutinho is the best player of Liverpool. Whole team will suffer,Klopp knows that.

Don't think so, Salah the main man now, he has played a fair amount of games without Coutiho and was getting hauls. Firmino the one to be affected by it

7 games without Coutinho - includes 4 double digit scores , 1 sub appearance and 1 subbed off due to Mane red card.

      Question!

In FPL what happens for example if you have Coutinho and his transfer is sealed to Barcelona?

Are you just forced to make a transfer and he is red-flagged indefinitely?

Haha I don’t actually have him.

Bit of a rookie question but I couldn’t remember it happening to me before.

Makes sense for him to stay within the game for the remainder of the season.

Annoys me when players of his ability leave the PL, for the easy going La Liga.

If Barcelona finally submit a strong proposal to the Reds, there is the possibility of concluding a deal in the winter, which allows Coutinho to seal a switch ahead of 2018-19. (@MelissaReddy_)

Woohoo, I'll be happy with this.

Why this is win win for Liverpool :

he has no release clause (to this day I still dont understand how his agent allowed that) ,he wont down tools as its a world cup year and liverpool in CL, if barca lose interest, they keep him in the summer, if not they get 134m with Keita on the way.

there is absolutely no incentive to sell now, Barca and Cout and his reperensentives can scream and cry all they like.
