Eden Hazard and Marcos Alonso grab a goal apiece, but Alvaro Morata endures a night to forget as Chelsea and Arsenal share the spoils at the Emirates.

Heading into Gameweek 22, Chelsea pair Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata were among the top five most sold players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after a poor run of form – Hazard had mustered one assist in five, while Morata had returned two goals in his last seven league appearances.

Antonio Conte’s decision to switch to a 3-5-1-1 away to the Gunners allowed both the chance to address their declines but only the Belgian succeeded.

Although he needed a converted penalty to find the net for the first time since Gameweek 15, Hazard fired all six of his efforts from inside the box – more than any player in the current round of fixtures.

Now down to just 8% ownership in FPL, Hazard’s return to a central role may again turn heads as the Blues prepare for a fine upcoming schedule that pits them against Leicester, Brighton, Bournemouth, Watford and West Brom over the next five Gameweeks.

While Morata only managed half the number of attempts on goal as his team-mate, all three of the Spaniard’s efforts were regarded as big chances – more than any player in the Gameweek.

His inability to convert any of them, particularly a last-gasp effort deep into injury time, has already had an impact in the FPL market – despite that run of aforementioned fixtures, the summer signing been subject to more transfers out than any forward in the last 24 hours.

Indeed, Morata has now missed 15 of his 24 big chances in 2017/18 – the only other player as wasteful this season has been the near-essential Mohamed Salah, who has converted just 10 of his 25 big chances.

Post-match, Conte backed his misfiring frontman to get back among the goals:

”This is not a lucky period for him because at the last game versus Stoke I said it is very important for the striker to have the chance to score, and here today he had chances to score, but it is football.

‘The only things I can tell him are to stay calm and continue to work in this way for the team because then the chances will arrive for him and for the other players. This is the first season he is playing with regularity. He has to stay calm and to continue to play in this way, and the goal is coming.”

That would indicate that, despite an obvious lack of confidence, Conte seems unlikely to take the 25-year-old out of the firing line.

The switch from Morata to Harry Kane is currently the most popular among trades between strikers: that swap is somewhat obvious.

Elsewhere, the compelling alternatives are thin on the ground.

An upgrade to Sergio Aguero is available for those with the funds to stretch to the Argentinian, though he will travel to face Liverpool next – the strongest home defence in the league.

Equally, the move to Roberto Firmino is less appealing ahead of a meeting with the City rearguard, and while speculation surrounding Philippe Coutinho’s future continues to cause potential unrest at Liverpool.

Alonso proves his worth

With 16 Gameweeks of the season still remaining, Marcos Alonso has already mirrored his total of six goals from last term after converting David Zappacosta’s cross to net Chelsea’s second in the four-goal thriller.

Over the last six Gameweeks alone, the marauding wing-back has racked up three goals, an assist, four clean sheets and six bonus points to move nine points clear at the top of the FPL defender standings.

Indeed, a total of 123 points has taken him into sixth overall in FPL – only four midfielders and one forward have recorded more points, and all five of them are priced over £8.5m.

That ability to deliver points at both ends of the pitch continues to benefit the Spaniard, whose 7.2 price tag now looks a snip.

Post-match, Conte underlined the attacking qualities that Alonso can offer…

“I ask our wing-backs to fill the box and try to score and don’t forget, he also is good with his head also and with free-kicks. He is in a good period, and his confidence is up, and I am very happy for him.”

For value in terms of points per million, Alonso’s 17.1 is bettered by just one outfield player – Nicolas Otamendi (17.5) – and is level with the top value midfielder, Brighton’s Pascal Gross.

With the upcoming schedule strengthening his claim as a defensive must-have, Alonso is the third top transfer target in the last 24 hours – over 22,000 have snapped him up and another price rise is surely imminent.

Arsenal’s Big Guns Misfire

The return of Mesut Ozil from a knee injury failed to benefit Alexis Sanchez or Alexandre Lacazette – like Chelsea’s Morata, both fired three unsuccessful shots inside the box at the Emirates.

Instead, it was Jack Wilshere and Hector Bellerin who proved the hosts’ unlikely heroes by firing their first goals of the season, with the Spaniard’s late equaliser salvaging a point.

Wilshere has now played from start to finish in six successive league matches and, having also supplied an assist in Gameweek 20, looks to be rediscovering his match sharpness due to that increased pitch-time.

Yet with Aaron Ramsey expected back in mid-January, it remains to be seen whether Wilshere’s security of starts will remain intact ahead of a fine run of four matches (bou CRY swa EVE) for Arsene Wenger’s side.

In defence, Arsenal have now gone four matches without a clean sheet, with the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac missing out last night.

Yet Bellerin’s record of playing every minute of the season remains intact – he is one of only five defenders to achieve that feat.

The Spaniard now has a goal and assist over the last four but has struggled to justify a price tag of 6.0 to this point. Team-mate Shkodran Mustafi, at 5.4, has averaged 4.9 points per match to Bellerin’s 3.9. With two goals and eight clean sheets from 12 starts, Mustafi looks one to consider for those seeking defensive reinforcements ahead of Arsenal’s improving schedule.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it time to shift funds back into defence?

Three trends have emerged over the festive period that indicate it may be time to start investing more in defence.

The cheap defender market has crashed.

With West Ham, Burnley, Huddersfield and Brighton conceding far too regularly and Everton’s assets set for more benchings the pool of 4.5m ish defenders is drying up. Arguably having one or two cheap defenders is still necessary, with the likes of Duffy and Schindler at least starting and offering promise. But having four of these players is no longer productive.

Secondly, spending more in defence is clearly bringing in the points, with Alonso still continuing to offer strong value at 7m+, Otamendi continuing to provide clean sheets and goal threat and the Manchester United defence, including De Gea, offering a strong source of points, including bonus.

Thirdly, cheap midfield assets are emerging to challenge the heavy hitters. Lingard offers sensational value among Manchester United assets. Arnautovic has the form and the fixtures. In addition, Mahrez offers consistency at a cheaper cost than the likes of Hazard or Sanchez.

Given these trends are you looking to shift funds into defence? Do you already have a premium focused backline? If so what players would you recommend?

Will a template backline emerge? If so who will be in it? Alonso, Otamendi, Jones and two cheapies perhaps?

Alonso is a joke. Never seen anything like him in 25 years of PL football. He’d be worth it even at 8m.

          Aye, looking like a must.

Not sure how he compares to vintage Baines, but his extra points came from pens and free kicks. Alonso is a legitimate penalty box threat.

Really happy with him, Otamendi and Pickford. Now need a United defender.

Alonso already has the free kicks. If he had pens as well he'd be the greatest defender of all time.

My favourites have been Baines (pens), Vidic (incredible goal threat and bonus hovering) and Graham Alexander (Burnley clean sheets and pens).

Vidic was great. Terry and Ivanovic also good, but tough to fit them in with Lampard and Drogba.

We have to bring out PK history of Hazard.
If we see any flaw then we might pressure Conte to try Alonso on PKs (also a future Alonso owner here)

        Yes, for me.

I have just given up the idea of acquiring Agüero and will rely on Kane as the lone striker.

But in defence, Otamendi (Kabasele, Kenny, Gomez, Ogbonna) will not save me.

I must get Jones or Stones plus Alonso.

This is especially true until CL fixtures start and GW 28, which is relatively calmer and less burdensome on rotation.

I will probably be rocking that backline next gameweek. Cheapies include Duffy and Ogbonna - both with good upcoming fixtures. But ro afford this backline and a good 5 man midfield i have to play with one heavy hitter up top (kane).

Already on it since Smalling's injury forced me to get in Alonso. Jones/Alonso/Azpi/Kenny, with Mbemba as fodder. Has served me well in the few GWs I've had them, though Stones may come in for Azpi soon.

The thing with Alonso is he's one of the few FPL defenders who doesn't ruin your enjoyment of a game as soon as he concedes. That's worth the price alone.

"Can't see XXXX maintaining this form" about a player that has been sensational for well over a year is the same sort of reasoning that meant people ignored Ramsey and Toure in their sensational season, dallied on getting Josh King and were late to the Vardy party.

I don't think this is 'form', I think this is more or less his base level. He gets chances to score in every game.

He has been in great form. However he does go off the boil when Chelsea go for runs of games without keeping a cleansheet.

One way to look at it, would you rather Stones and Christensen or Alonso and Mbemba? The mid price premiums offer much better value imo. I still think there’s still value in budget defenders too.

I have owned Otamendi, Jones, Christensen since the beginning of dec and have played them every week.
I have recorded 7/15 CS and thats including owning Christensen through his illness period.

I think that Otamendi, Jones, Alonso is a no brainer and a fourth rotating defender with either a mid or a striker is workable moving forward.

3-5-2, 4-4-2, 4-5-1 are in my view the best formations moving forward given the potential for a strong defensive returns.

Upgraded defence by adding Alonso about 5 GWs ago and it's working (after a shocking start to this season).

Think I've got a decent template at the minute...

      Pope Adrian
      Alonso Ota Jones - 4.5 4.5
      Salah Sterling Arnie Lingard 4.5
      Kane Aguero 4.5

It's the 4.5's that I'm then trying to work out what's best with...

Downgrade Kane for the next 4 GWs...but to who?
Then upgrade the 4.5 mid (RLC)...but to who if I've already got Lingard and Arnie?

If you're upgrading defence, does having two big hitters up front work?

I think this will be one type of template but I'm also looking at 1 big hitter up top in Kane until his poor fixtures GW25-27 and switching to aguero. This allows to maximise mid options.

Yeah i will be doing that with 5 man strong mid something like: Salah,Sterling,KDB,Pogba, arnautovic
and have Kane up top. Ill have 2 def options at 4.5 and 2 cheap striker options and rotate to allow 4-5-1, 4-4-2, 3-5-2

I should never have shifted such funds out of defence! Midpriced to premium defenders by their nature are the best value players in the game.

But yes you are right, up until recently, if you picked the right players, you could get away with a cheaper defence. Now though, I think a 4-4-2 formation offers the best solution at present. It is a flexable formation for a start, but with only Kane, Aguero and Firmino appearing to offer value up front theres no need to have 3 up top.

In defence I currently have Vertonghen, Alonso, Christensen, and Duffy and Schindler rotating for the final spot. Hud and Bri rotate well for the time being so I'm happy with those 2. Vertonghen will probably become Stones after the Everton or Southampton game. I would also recommend Jones, who Mourinho clearly rates highly, VVD, once he starts for Liverpool, and Keep an eye out for when Alderweirald returns at 5.8m. I would also throw Mustafi in there normally, but the Arsenal defensive crisis puts me off for now, so I'd steer clear of him, despite the fixtures.

To be fair it was Chelsea's first 10 games that he did relatively nothing in last season- in his first 10 games I think he did pretty well if memory serves.

He was also the top scorer in GW 2 this season

But that was it just top goal scorer in GW2. and 2 clean sheets in 10. Compare that to GW10 onwards. Same as last year from GW11 I think last year he was unreal constantly involved moving forward and loads of CS

Had super Marcos all season. Had to be patient during his lull but he's back to his best now.

I'm currently rocking a bit of a premium defence

      De Gea

Alonso Otamendi Jones Ogbonna K Long

      Salah Sterling Alli Arnautovic RLC

      Kane Firmino DCL

Gonna maybe do Arnie to Lingard and DCL to Quaner to try and rustle up enough cash to make my magic bean grow into a 5.5 - 6.5 beanstalk. Chuffed with that defence though especially if teams tighten up after the new year (which is the perception)

I used part of Kaneexit funds to bring in DDG/Ota over Xmas and have been running with a 'set and forget' backline of DDG/Ota/Jones/Alonso (Mee/Long) last 4/5 GWs and it has done me well.

Then used the upsurge in Lingard/Arnie to allow me to get Kane back by downgrading Haz and Cout.

8 greenies in a row and gone from 1.3M OR to 260k OR.

Staying ahead of trends can be beneficial but does anyone else agree there's too much emphasis on overall rank & what the community is doing.

Don't get me wrong I love this site, I use it for advice & I do look at my OR. I'm proud to be in the top 100k atm & was happy to finish 26k last season but I'm more concerned about where I finish in my Mini & H2H leagues & what they're doing because of the financial implications.

This week I see a lot of people panicking on here to get Alonso, Mahrez & Aguero into their teams asap because of their potential upcoming points and so called trends. These players are labelled essential but are they?

      For me no!

Obviously very good options & players I might look at when I WC but I think 1 guy has Aguero in my ML & no one has Alonso or Mahrez atm. One guy even WC'd Alonso out 🙂 No one is rushing to get these players in primarily because of cost & as a result for now their points total can't hurt me, maybe just my OR.

Essentials/ trends to me; Otamendi, Salah, Arnie & Kane. Alonso is definitely in my thoughts but I'm not sure I'll actually get him in.

It's not silly, if you aren't concerned with overall rank you can just block certain players in a ML, I never do that but it is a great strategy for ML only players.

Try to be more polite and respect others opinion. For someone who targets ML obviously the position in the leagues is the most important thing. We all pay more attention to our ML towards the end of the season but i think most people here agree that a high position in OR is our main target.

yes, spunked my wildcard today to invest in a complete strategy rethink because I think it's much more valuable for me than a DGW in 34 or whatever

      DDGea
      Jones, Alonso, Azpi, Otamendi (4.5)
      Salah, Sterling, Richarl, Mahrez, Linguard
      Kane (Ayew, A, Quaner)

cheap defenders and almost all strikers but Kane offering unreliability. With Kane a shoe in for the C it was an easy decision

Just to add to Alonso's appeal...regardless of last night's two goals conceded...

N’Golo Kante returned from injury in Gameweek 11 and since then the Chelsea defence has conceded the fewest goals (6) and kept the most clean sheets (7), while limiting opponents to 24 shots on target – again, fewer than any other team.

I've had that for 4 GW's and it's not paid off (other than Alonso's individual hauls) - mainly due to Christensen's absence. I'm optimistic for the next five though. After that, CL kicks in so rotation could be more of an issue.

By then we'll be clear on Luiz and any new LWB that comes in, I guess.

I disagree on the cheap defender crash. It's due to the festive period. Burnley have City and Utd at home in the next four but otherwise their schedule is looking good and they will provide clean sheets for 4.5ish prices. Tarkowski back too. I can also see Palace getting some CS.

I’ve had a trio of Alonso, Azpi and Jones since Jones’ return now and it’s served me well. I’ve had had Azpi the majority of the season and Alonso since GW14.

It’s often been said I’ve got “too much” money tied up in defence but I consistently score fairly decently because of this.

I'd say 2 Premiums and a third cheapie is the way to go, 3 starts to compromise midfield/attack to an extent. Something like Alonso, Otta, Burnley/Brighton/Newcastle or whichever decent rotation is available, sure to be a decent fixture for one of the 3...

Yes it is time for those who wasn't already there.

Matching up the strong template defences is the best way to try and maintain rank for me, allows your attackers to differentiate you and pull you up the ranks.

You could argue it's time to double up on one or two of the sides, Otamendi and Stones or Courtois and Alonso for example, should give you a strong platform for the run in.

Is there any way to access previous years records? (other than total score)

Would be interesting to see how many points I had at this stage last year for example.

      Cheers

It only takes three click of a button on my PC.

Left click and drag to select everything on the GW history page, then copy and paste into a blank spreadsheet.

The Hazard penalty last night is for me the perfect example of why VAR is gonna suck. Seen plenty argue it was a pen and plenty who disagree. It will disrupt the flow of a game and people will get bored of it very quicky. I know this because as a rugby league I can tell you the video is ref is so bad its untrue, great for watching a winger somersault over in the corner, same as its great to know if the ball crossed the line in footy, but soon as the decisions require subjectivity it becomes a time consuming frustrating guessing game. Wonder if it will have an impact on fpl too, could argure there will be more pens because the refs would rather blow and be wrong then restart the game as opposed to play on and wait for the protests

I don't agree with you in principle but your last point is a good and valid one. Nevertheless it surely must be right to do everything reasonably possible to come to the correct decision. Millions of pounds, jobs etc depend on them.

Just leave the game run and stop it if a penalty is awarded - only going to be 30 seconds - anything in the interim is null and voided 🙂
