Bolton’s rise to the Champions League places was once again orchestrated by the performance of a strike pairing who are becoming the most feared double act in the Premier League. I can barely believe those words as they are typed.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies justified the oxygen we’ve been feeding them on these pages but sharing four goals in the 5-1 dismantling of Newcastle at the Reebok today. Throw in one assist each for the pair and you’re left with points totals that see them both take up places amongst the top four Forwards in the Fantasy Premier League game. Elmander, incredibly, is now at the top of those rankings and if Bonus Points fall kindly, he could rank as the top scoring player in the entire game. Astonishing.

Currently owned by just under 14% of FPL Managers, the Swede enjoyed a price rise this week. Get used to it – Elmander’s value will surely soar with Bolton facing the porous Blackpool defence in a week’s time. At just 6.1 in the FPL, the lure will surely prove too much and already there’s talk of the armband for Gameweek 15. Rewind 12 months and such an accolade for Elmander was simply unthinkable – he was lucky to experience the warmth of a crowded bench, let alone that of the Reebok faithful.

Poor Kevin Davies is having the season of his life but even his substantial contribution looks likely to be overshadowed; Elmander’s seemingly relentless rise to prominence is looking just too irresistible. Owen Coyle’s prize asset will be a hot property in January – even hotter in the Summer. Right now it’s Fantasy Managers who will be shopping at the Reebok and they’re likely to come in droves.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi

Cech or Hart for the long term considering the rest of defenders are: Evra-R Johnson- Coleman- Jara - Simpson?

    Tks

    1) Elmander for Drog
    2) Elmander for Odemwingie
    3) Davies for Drog
    4) Davies for Odemwingie
    5) Carroll for Drog
    6) Carroll for Odemwingie
    7) none - no knee jerk

Knee jerk, which one would you go for?

That isn't fair, you're not giving us the choice of going for option 7!

I think you should do 'none - no knee jerk', but there you go, your question is unfair so I guess I would do option 2 given the constraint you have set.

What was the point of listing option 7? Just to tease us?!

Yep I know. I'm torn. No Spurs coverage has been the fundamental reason for my downfall in the last three weeks and can only afford Bale or VDV by getting of a big hitter.

I think a lot of people will tell you to out Tevez after a few bad weeks, but i'd beg to differ.

When Tevez has played and Man City have scored, Tevez has either scored or assisted 100% of the time. Yes thats right, not 80% or 90%, 100%! So basically if you fancy City to score at all, i'd keep Tevez!

I have Carroll, Elmander and Tevez now, and won't be changing them unless they have a run of 5+ games with no returns or injury. I like the idea of having the extra cash for some strong midfielders and defence too!

Dnt giv me this stats bullshizzle. If foster never had the game of his life drogba would have had a hatrick. Drogba will come good and start scoring big again soon, this is inevitable, as is te fact that elmander will slow down. He most likely will only achieve the score he did today maybe once again this season if hes lucky. Chasing last weeks points always a bad idea especially at the expence of drogba.

Elmander the next 4 weeks isn't that silly given his fixtures. Drogs will drop 0.1 the next week; Johan will go up another 0.1 to the 0.1 he's gained tonight.

Drogs (not in form): new EVE tot MUN

That's how I'm looking at it. He's also had malaria and been rushed back. It's a gamble certainly, but I held onto him and Berbatov for 7 weeks waiting for them to do something. I think my midfield is strong enough to keep getting me a fair score even if Elmander goes into Megson form.

Hmmm, I reckon we have similar enough teams/goals in life, Hank.

But you're more patient than me. I held onto Berb for too long, Bale for not long enough etc. I'm trying to change my tack to improve my rank. I feel like I cannot pick a decent team this year. It may backfire; I'll enjoy the freedom in the interim.

Thanks 🙂 saves 1am sub decision

Think I have had enough of drogs though. Who would you pick out of these:

        Drogba out
        ---ROony
        ---defoe
        -- tevez
        ---van persie
        ---Torres

I'm thinking Torres but should I give drog till week 17 when their fixtures really turn ugly and lv get a lot better

Lol you have to wonder if these so called experts watch football matches, the bonus points are usually a good joke and ive just seen Fabregas got a rating of 5 on Skysports.com while song, squilachi, denilson and a few others got a 6. We must have been watching a different game...

Yup, although Flamini wasn't captain, he was a leader on the pitch, we are missing someone like him. Maybe the problem lies with Wenger, why we pushed forward so much when we had a 2-0 lead is baffling.

Yeah you have a point. Once Van Persie is back he will get a lot more returns, no disrespect to Chamakh as he has done well but hes not a goalscorer. Looks to me like hes more of a link up striker, he'll always look to pass first, Cesc created a couple of great chances for him today.

          Starting values:

          Foster 4.5
          Carson 4
          Vidic 7
          Ivanovic 7
          Elmo 4.5
          Coleman 4.5
          Simpson 4
          VDV 7.5
          Nani 8
          Fabregas 12
          N'Zogbia 6
          Malouda 9.5
          Elmander 5.5
          Carroll 5
          Varney 4.5

          Total = 93.5

If you'd bought that team at the start of the season, you would still have 6.5 in the bank, so you haven't gained much value in real terms.

Plus you will be afraid to sell most of your players as you lose a lot of cash.

Hank, go onto your transfer screen, remove all your players from your team, (make all 15 shirts go grey), and see what you have to spend at the bottom of the screen. That is a better judge of team value as it eliminates the tax factor that you have to pay when you sell a player.

For instance, I'd rather have a team value of 105.0, and only a few players in it that haven't risen loads, than a team value of 107.0 that is full of players that have risen 0.5 or more.

It gives you more flexibility if you have players that haven't risen loads, as you don't have to worry about losing value when you sell.

                102.8M

I have a fairly low 'Overall' team value, but I don't mind, as Malouda aside, all my other players are priced close to their purchase price and I won't hesitate to sell anyone of them if I have to.

I don't have to worry about staying super loyal to individual players due to losing cash, I can just go for it! 🙂

30 points so far this week. I'm feeling very down.
ACole OUT Vidic IN just before price rise has cheered me up 1%.
    I've dropped from 11 k to 60 k in three weeks.
Like I said, I'm feeling very down.
Will Arteta/Dempsey/Coleman or PJones cheer me up?
Thought not...like I said, I'm feeling very down.

You probably sold a load of players that lost you cash.

For instance, I sold Drogba last week and lost 0.3 as you only get half the amout that the player has risen since you purchased him.

You have probably gone and lost a lot of cash my friend! 😉

That happens when you start your WC, if your selling players that have gone up in price since you bought them then you only get 1/2 the gain( 0.1 profit in every 0.2 gain). If your chasing value gain at the beginning of your WC week then don't use players that you've made a price gain with( unless your getting rid of for good)
Did any of that make any sense?

You sold previous risers. One of the things you have to watch when using your wildcard.

You can change your players whenever you want, but you can only eek out a bit of cash by getting players that rise twice, ie 0.2, as whenever you sell, you lose half the gain, rounded down.

Pretty much. You can sell them but the 0.1 you just gained disappears. If they gain another 0.1 by Saturday 1am then you can sell them & make a free 0.1
The wildcard isn't really money making as such. Getting your team ready for a 4-6 weeks period minimum is more important. It should give you an instant boast in rankings.

              Play the fixtures.

It hasn't been working as well this season, as seasons past, but it works better than just randomly choosing people.

If you have an Everton and Liverpool defender, they rotate well...

At least for all the people on this site.

We would all gain about 7 million each time we use our wildcard, so 14 million as we get two now, on top of all the extra rises we get throughout the season, and it would make a mockery of the game basically.

So the tax they have on the rises is a great idea, particularly as it makes people scared to sell players that they've had for ages, and they (sometimes) end up being foolishly loyal due to worrying too much about funds.

Would appreciate some advice on my team (players in brackets are the ones I want out by Xmas)

    Foster (Carson)
Samba Konch Coleman Alex (Elmo - what's going on with him? Will he ever play again?)
    VDV Fabs Nani Barton (Malouda)
    Drogs Elmander Carroll

Does that seem about right for people to get rid of?

''(players in brackets are the ones I want out by Xmas)'' - Ha, that's a novel idea, they're almost like reverse Christmas presents.

If you're only planning to get rid of three players, (and by Christmas at that, which is a while off), then surely you are happy with your team as you are planning on keeping the other 12 for absolutely ages!

Therefore, you don't really need any advice, as you have a team that you are happy with... 😉

Sell Carroll, he only has one decent fixture between now and GW28.

He will still continue to score after you've got rid of him, but he won't score as often as he has done in the first 14 weeks where his fixtures were easier.

In saying that, he is unpredictable and looks to pick points and bp's on a regular enough basis. My (sale) value for him is 5.5m and there's not a lot around at that price. He is a good 1st sub especially with the midfield choice available, you do have to bench 1 mid or forw at (least) every week after all.

                Exactly my point.

I've sold Carroll, and the only game in the next 14, where I worry that he could score 10+ points, is the home fixture against West Ham, which is a while off and not worth holding onto him for.

Surely you're better off going for a striker that has 4 or 5 opportunities for a 10+ score in the next 8 to 10 games?

No one is going to score 10+ every week in that price range. Carroll has been amazingly consistent and there is no reason to think he won't continue. He has scored 5 points or above on NINE occasions so far this season. How many other players have done that yet alone in that price range

Again, you don't seem to realise what I'm saying. He had easier fixtures for that spell where he had NINE occasions scoring 5+ points. I ended up collecting most of those points too.

However, I don't think he will score at the same rate over the next 14 games, and this FPL game is about looking into the future and not looking back into the past and noticing all the points that you may have had if only you'd got so-and-so in.

                    Sheesh!

No, but you have to play them most weeks to get the couple of big scores they do get.

Reason to think Carroll won't continue = he has tougher fixtures coming.

                    Stats agree with SuperDunny.

DA and Nibbsy, you're basing your argument solely on fixtures, and to be honest, the quality of the player is always, always more important.

Carroll has had more shots than anyone in the entire league last I checked! Suggesting he won't be able to continue his form just because of his "tougher" fixtures is naive.

Again Camzy, you're basing your stats on his easier start to the season, rather than what might happen over the next 14 games.

You can't use his points and shot statistics when they are during an easy run otherwise you could point to Rooney's goals versus Hull and Pompey and argue that he can do it all the time. Only after GW27 can you compare Carroll correctly, where you can look at his shot stats, his goal stats and his assist stats.

We're just over a third of the way through the season. He has 8 goals and 4 assists.

Do you really think that Carroll will finish the season on 22 goals and 11 assists, (multiplying by 38/14 = 2.7).

                    That is some output!

He is more likely to finish on 16 or 17 goals, and 8 or 9 assists, which is still pretty hefty, but Carroll is due a barren spell to bring his stats back into allignment with where his end of season stats will finish up.

He will get his (relatively) barren spell during the tougher games.

Just wait till Carroll returns 3 lots of 2 pointers in a row, then see how you feel about starting him in a tough away game.

And that will happen, unless you think he's going to score 6+ points in the majority of games all season?

Hey Nibbsy, the games that you would expect decent returns from Carroll are primarily the home games right?

Well his next 6 home games are Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal. They may only win 2 of them so he won't get much bonus points there, but will probably get the odd goal.

His away games are ok, although there are still trips to Tottenham, Birmingham, Sunderland and Fulham which are not super easy.

There's no way Carroll will get anywhere near 83 points over these games. 😀

It's hard to keep a good player down.

Fixtures aren't everything. By all means look to play them while you can, but replacing Carroll when there are loads of other areas to address is most probably a mistake.

Why look to get Carroll out who's a consistent point scorer versus rejigging a flagging midfield or improving your defense? You can't "play the fixtures" on all the players because you only have 1 transfer a week.

Too often, I see people make rash transfers to get form players in only to realize that they've left a key component of their team unimproved (no Nani, Van Der Vaart). At this point, I refuse to believe (unless you're wildcarding, and even then...) that your squad is so good, that Carroll > Elmander/Davies is the only move that would see you improve your team.

I have just done my wildcard last week, (after playing the fixtures from GW1 to GW13). I wildcarded as different teams starting going on better runs of fixtures and it's time to get some of those players in.

My team is now nicely set up till Christmas where I don't need to do many transfers.

                    Foster, Hahnemann
                    Evra, Konchesky, Coleman, Steinsson, Bramble
                    Nani, Fabregas, Cahill, Jarvis, Malouda
                    Elmander, Odemwingie, Torres

It should see me score well over the next 6 or 7 weeks, and then we will almost be upon another wildcard! 😀

I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

Obviously, you place a lot of weight on fixtures and good rotation, but I don't. I believe in a superb starting XI with proven players who you can rely on over the season even through tough games and a purely supplementary/almost dead bench.

I wouldn't have Hahnemann in my team even though he rotates well with Foster/has good fixtures simply because he's not playing in a good defensive team.

Odemwingie likewise in offense. I think Newcastle are a better attacking force, and even though their fixtures might be harder, I can see Carroll doing better than Odem.

A well spread out defense like yours is appealing, but I'd rather have 1 or 2 really high-end defenders and a few cheap rotatables than have a whole backline of mid-price, mid-table team playing defenders.

You have a different way of understanding and playing this game, and I respect that, even if I don't agree with it. We'll see at the end of the season who's strategy worked better I suppose.

Yeah, we will indeed. At the moment you have 829 and I have 747, so I guess your way is better, but then that is because I haven't had the benefit of some of these good early scorers like Carroll, going through an inevitable dry spell yet. After 28 weeks, it may be a little clearer, and I might be ahead of you at that stage.

I don't like the strong 11 and weak bench idea, as you can't rotate as much, although it does have the advantage of not having players scoring well that are sitting on your bench. Most weeks I seem to have at least one player with 5 or more points on my bench, and the trend continues this week with 11 points from Foster!

Odemwingie will only occasionally play for me, even though he is crud. 😀

1 decent fixture, means 1 game that he is very likely to do something. He will still get regular 6 - 9's throughout the season, but over the next 14, he won't do it that often. It's a horrendous run for Mr Carroll.

You can't point out the odd game here and there, I am talking about not having Carroll over the next 14 games, we can discuss how well he's done after those games are out the way, and we'll see if he gets another 80+ points added to his tally.

Wow, you really have no idea about my management syle then! Anyway, i really am off to bed now 🙂

By the way Nibbsy, Carroll has already played 2 of those scary 'big four' away games so you'd only have to bench him for 2 out of the next 23 games. Not too shabby

I agree with this. And it's not just the fact that he won't score regularly, it's more the fact that you have to bench a forward every week, and most weeks you'll be benching Carroll with his fixtures so will prob miss those sporadic points anyway.

Good thing Nibbsy. Look to the future to see where your next points are coming from, and don't worry about getting bitten on the bum by players that you sell, occasionally scoring some points.

Carroll could easily end up getting 40 - 50 points over the next 14 games, look at how Drogba and Malouda's points have dried up after there easy run of games at the start.

He's this season's Darren Bent (or for the older posters, Andy Johnson at Palace) - cheap and relatively fiture-proof.

No one's saying that he won't be involved when Newcastle score, but the fact is that Newcastle will score less goals in the next 14 games, than the 22 goals they have already scored in the first 14 games.

Less goals from his team, means less output from Carroll, and if you want to finish high in this game, you have to forget about team value, and get your players in that have better chances of scoring during any given run of fixtures.

Also, I wouldn't say I'm happy with it. Foster has some awful fixtures coming and Carson is a terrible replacement.

Elmo seems to be out of favour.

        Malouda no longer scores points.

I have no city or united defenders, which has hurt me over the last few weeks.

          Keep Malouda and sell Drogba.

Elmo to Bramble is handy if you're worrying about the Egyptian's pitch time.

Not sure about that, Drogba looks to be gradually coming back to form and there aren't really any forwards I want.

Good shout on Bramble. Was also thinking of a Fulham defender maybe. What's happened to Salcido?

What evidence is there of a form turn-around for Drogba?

              His last three scores have been 2, 2, 2 instead of 2, 5, 6.

Malouda is classed as a midfielder, and has a decent goal threat when Chelsea are playing well. Not as much of a goal threat as Drogba, but almost as strong.

However, with Malouda being a midfielder, you will find it hard to find another midfielder with a similar goal threat, whereas you can get other forwards that can bang in the goals up-front.

Just think of Malouda's pointage during the second half of last season, and early this season, I'm not selling the fukker! 😀

Did you watch the game? I've seen the last few Chelsea games and i can tell you that today was a vast improvement on anything i've seen in weeks. He could have easily had two before HT and the guy is proven 100% pure thoroughbred

I watched the game, Drogba is a great player. I still don't think that he will score more points than say Rooney/Tevez/Torres over the next 5 games.

Well then why are you asking "What evidence is there of a form turn-around for Drogba?"

Surely having watched the game today you could see that he was a different player to the one turning up for the last month. Isn't that evidence enough?

Because Drogba's been banging on the door for goals against Wolves and Fulham too.

He played ok today, (considering he didn't score), but not really any better than how he did in those games I mentioned above.

He played much better than in both those games you mentioned above. I'm guessing you're just going off highlights. I was at Stamford bridge for the wolves game and he was absolute gabarge, literally the worst performance i have seen from him in years.

Anyway it's bed time so bye bye

Evidence is admittedly the 10 min highlights tonight, he was unlucky with his chances tho.

I know what you mean about Malouda, I won't be knee jerking. But he played deeper today and has tough fixtures after gw16. Anyway, he's got 2 more weeks to convince me!

He has tough games, but then so does Drogba.

When Lamps and Essien are back, Malouda will play back in the front three in place of Kalou.

You seem to have a good handle on fixtures, any tips on who to rotate with everton or Liverpool fixtures for the next few weeks (apart from each other)?

I'm toying with the idea of bringing in Hangeland. I notice you have Coleman though and unfortunatly Everton and Fulham rotate really poorly. Not sure if that would affect your decision.

Why not go like-for-like and bring in Rafael. United fans on here reckon he's nailed on. I watched the United today game and he's getting forward a lot. Also getting in among the BP's.

Apparently Stoke have not scored from a throw in the last 24 games, so Delap is not really the threat anymore. Whoops!

*I'm not counting Fuller's goal against Liverpool, as the ball went in ages after the throw was taken, even though Liverpool weren't able to clear the danger quickly.
