Bolton’s rise to the Champions League places was once again orchestrated by the performance of a strike pairing who are becoming the most feared double act in the Premier League. I can barely believe those words as they are typed.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies justified the oxygen we’ve been feeding them on these pages but sharing four goals in the 5-1 dismantling of Newcastle at the Reebok today. Throw in one assist each for the pair and you’re left with points totals that see them both take up places amongst the top four Forwards in the Fantasy Premier League game. Elmander, incredibly, is now at the top of those rankings and if Bonus Points fall kindly, he could rank as the top scoring player in the entire game. Astonishing.

Currently owned by just under 14% of FPL Managers, the Swede enjoyed a price rise this week. Get used to it – Elmander’s value will surely soar with Bolton facing the porous Blackpool defence in a week’s time. At just 6.1 in the FPL, the lure will surely prove too much and already there’s talk of the armband for Gameweek 15. Rewind 12 months and such an accolade for Elmander was simply unthinkable – he was lucky to experience the warmth of a crowded bench, let alone that of the Reebok faithful.

Poor Kevin Davies is having the season of his life but even his substantial contribution looks likely to be overshadowed; Elmander’s seemingly relentless rise to prominence is looking just too irresistible. Owen Coyle’s prize asset will be a hot property in January – even hotter in the Summer. Right now it’s Fantasy Managers who will be shopping at the Reebok and they’re likely to come in droves.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Jaaskaleinen is a sensible choice I feel (but then I have him). Bolton look a decent side and should keep more clean sheets. At some point they will come. He is also a good keeper who can score points for saves. Gomes is expensive for a keeper playing in a team that likes to throw caution to the wind. Better cheaper options.

Fabianski is a different situation. Arsenal are conceding goals partly because the goalkeepers they have aren't good enough. There are far better options for his price and I can't understand why anyone would want an Arsenal keeper.

although bolton has been team of the season so far the fact is that they hasn't kept a cs since the opening day n there defence isn't good at all...it is just they have very good attacking players a bit like arsenal, spurs, blackpool n west brom...these team can hide there defensive difficulties by simply scoring more goals without a cs....

fixtures doesn't matter this season...bolton will score in most of the games n their goals will only come from elmander, davies n lee...i think bolton will easily score a minimum of 3 n maximum of 5 goals ag b'pool n majority of them will come from 3 players...bolton has changed their style of play under coyle n b'pool attacking players are good(although they are over-acheiving)...so i think it could be a high scoring game simply because both defences r below average...but this is one of the most unpredictable season of the pl so no one can predict what is going to happen in future...

I've gambled on Gyan rather than Elmander. It may prove the wrong choice but Gyan is very much a temporary fill-in in my Van Persie slot.

Hi mate, you are in my Sportal League in the Sportal EPL game.
NMR is my username. Foley doesn't rotate with anyone. He is useless. EVE & LIV play home & away every week. One of your strikers or Cahill would have to be the one to go for a defender upgrade.

Sportal is alot easier really. Every player gets points unlike FPL. Hope your doing well to be in the league next season. You are doing quite well in FPL anyway. Not a fan of hits but they do work on some occasions. Plenty sold Drogba to Elmander & it's paid off already. They could swap this week & still be in front.

You'll have to downgrade somewhere - having those 3 defenders along with Everton and Liverpool defenders, one of whom will always be away is too weak. Personally I would downgrade Cahill. His seasons are usually fairly consistent so he cannot continue to perform this well. He is not as much value as the rest of your midfield is for the price. Plenty of good midfielders in the 5.5 - 6 price range for that slot. Then you'll have plenty to upgrade the defence.

Take a 4 point hit this week and then do the rest one by one. The rest of your team is fantastic.

He has a point in which case I would stick for a week - play Jagielka, Foley and Konchesky and then do what I suggest in my other message. You won't score much but at least they all play. Your midfield and strikers should more than make up for this.

Get rid of him now then and take a look at Kolarov today as an option. Of the defenders you have, I would keep Konchesky and Simpson definitely.

And do it gradually. Only necessary to ship out Cahill and probably Foley this week. Perhaps that might even be enough on its own.

Stop taking unnecessary hits. Your team is really good.

To continue our discussion on the previous page, MoreTragics, the things you class as luck add up to the 40% figure I would think - BPs 100% luck is overdoing it a little as some players get a lot more than others and you can pick them. What would your assessment be? Not the 80-20 from Roger surely?

True about the BPs. Most of the time they are good enough. Players are bonus magnets for a reason. I still stand by the 70:30 figure but could go down to 65:35 if I had too.

What confuses people is the random BPs..

Rafael got 2 BPs the other week for playing 48 minutes and basically doing nothing. He got 3 BPs yesterday.. Adds to the notion that whoever dishes out the BPs has him in their team

That can only be judged if you've seen both games. I haven't so I wouldn't know if it was fair or not. The 48 minute one seems a bit ridiculous I must admit. Also attacking full backs are likely to stand out more and thus garner BPs.

I saw the game and he did nothing. Most people think it was a mistake and the BPs should have gone to Vidic.

I agree with old mister tragic that a high percentage of BPs are undeserved,

What are the golden rules of playing Fantasy League do you think? Here is one from me:

Never transfer a player in just after he has scored a hat-trick.

    Any more, anyone agree?

Getting a player that just scored a hat-trick = price rises, confidence etc. Wouldn't say that's a great golden rule. plenty got Carroll after his hat-trick & aren't complaining.

Plenty got Berbatov and Nolan and are. Actually I did buy Carroll after his hat-trick but I was going to anyway having seen his performance against Man United.

I bought Berbatov in week 3 (b4 his hat-trick) but I should have got shot of him earlier.

In general, I think it is a reasonable rule of thumb.

I've thought of that recently, and I don't think there is actually a rule. There is a tendency that a player who gets a points haul gets very few points after all, that's why chasing points works very seldom. But there are quite few significant exceptions from this tendency... I personally think, that you should be very careful when buying a player after a massive haul. All the decisions should be based on your views whether you think the guy can keep (start) scoring in the future. It's more an art than any rule here...

    hi all

Need to sell Elmo. Have 5.5. for replacement (although that doesnt have to be spent).

Who to buy? My other defenders are Kolarov, Vidic, Simpson, Jara.

    Thinking out of:
    Distin
    Konchesky
    Bramble

    Much appreciated!

In order of preference for me:
      Konchesky
      Distin
      Bramble

However you may have rotation problems if you have both Simpson and Jara. And wait until after tomorrow so that you can check what Bruce is doing with Mummy. Maybe he is worth keeping (don't think so but you have the luxury of being able to wait).

No assist for Lee then from Nolan's hand ball. Looked like one to me though I may be slightly biased. Bolton are looking very good at the moment with a decent balance between creativity and defensive solidity. The new Everton?

The issue of bonus points is always problematic (especially when your players miss out).

A colleague of mine advised me that English players tend to be favoured in the allocation of bonus points.

for example the top 4 goalkeepers for bonus points are as follows:
    Robinson
    Foster
    Hart
    Green

The top 4 defenders on BP's
    Cahill
    Cole
    johnston
    Jags

Ok midfield is dominated by non-english players

And up front the top two!
    Kevin Davis
    Carroll

    Whats your opinion on this?
There has been quite a few times when the BP judges have leaned towards the english player (to the detriment of his foreign colleague)

    some examples are as follows
The tendency to award higher bonus to
Shawcross rather than Huth (who has been much better in my opinion)
Davis compared to Elmander (yesterday been an example)

Based on these Bp's you would find it hard to imagine that England had such a bad world cup!

    Just some thoughts,

The best keepers in England are all foreign but all play for good enough sides that they will rarely be tested enough to win bonus points - Hart is an exception, I admit - so it's no surprise that the likes of Foster and Robinson have done well. Goalies rarely get bonus in any case.

With defenders, I think the bonus judges are impressed by a traditional "English" style of defender: big, aggressive and good in the air. (A Cole is an exception here, but never used to trouble the bonus judges and I'm not sure why this has changed this season.) This doesn't have to be an English player though - Kyrgiakos fits the bill and is also a bonus magnet, despite being Greek.

In the striking department, Carroll and Kevin Davies also win bonus points for their old-fashioned "English" virtues - as does Didier Drogba.

Yeah. It would be an amazing amount of free cash though. Not sure who I'd spend it on anyway, though.

In seriousness, I may do Cham for one of them. He gets goals but rarely big points and with RVP on the verge now, he's no longer a dead cert to play 90 every game.

Agree. I'm sure I've done that in the past. Bought a more expensive player than the one I really wanted just to "get my money's worth" or whatever. They should introduce "earning interest" on money you don't spend, like it's in savings.

It's a gamble. As good as Bolton have been, they are still Bolton, and surely won't keep this up all season. It might work for a short term move, with their good fixtures, but if you're losing money selling big-name forwards, it may be difficult to bring them back in when they hit form.

You could just swap Davies for Elmander, I guess, but that'd be one of those potential annoyances, where the one swapped out banged in two goals.
