Scout Notes – Hazard Blows Baggies Away

Eden Hazard again provided the spark of brilliance for Chelsea, making his late contribution an extraordinarily high scoring Gameweek.

The Belgian fired two goals to double his tally in home matches this season, moving to 11 overall and six in the last six Gameweeks.

Owned by a modest 8.1%, Hazard was captained by just over 119,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. They went into Monday night’s clash desperate for him to produce in light of big returns from Sergio Aguero and Mohamed Salah and he duly obliged.

Olivier Giroud’s presence as the lone striker in Chelsea’s 3-4-2-1 proved significant. It was his lay-off that provided the assist for Hazard’s opener – a crisp strike into the bottom corner.

Giroud made his first start and lasted until 61 minutes until replaced by the fit-again Alvaro Morata.

Returning from a back injury far sooner than expected, the Spaniard provided the pass for Hazard’s second – a stunning finish from 20 yards.

Inevitably, Hazard went on to pick up the three bonus points – a seventh maximum of the season – to move to a total of 22.

Hazard has dropped in ownership in eight of the last nine Gameweeks, losing 419,000 managers over that period.

But even though he goes to Manchester United in Gameweek 28, with Manchester City to follow that, his current form and output makes it very difficult to dispose of his services.

The availability of Giroud and Morata are big factors, with Hazard looking far more menacing as a direct goal threat playing off a recognised striker.

It remains to be seen how that particularly pecking order forms, with Conte’s selection for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Hull City likely to offer clues. As it stands, it would be no surprise if Giroud remains in the starting XI.

Post-match, though, Conte’s thoughts on his strikers were mainly restricted to their lack of match sharpness:

“Morata missed one month with a pain in his back and I hope we’ve solved the situation.
For Giroud it’s the same, he’s coming from a muscular problem and for us it’s very important for him to go into our idea of football and understand the right positions, for example the first goal was a clear example of our idea.
Now it’s very important for him and Alvaro to play games, they need to find the best physical condition. Training is okay but games are better and more important.”

Alonso absent again

The night begun inauspiciously for Fantasy managers, with Marcos Alonso again missing out.

The wing-back was the most sold player heading into the Gameweek with 220,000 managers moving him out. However, there were still 1.3 million disappointed managers who were forced to turn to their bench to fill the void.

Alonso was sidelined with fatigue at Vicarage Road in Gameweek 26, but there were reports that the Spaniard had returned to training. However, Conte confirmed pre-match that he had suffered a twisted ankle in Saturday’s session.

With Chelsea’s next Gameweek action on Sunday February 25, Alonso should have the recovery time, and we will likely hear more on his situation in Conte’s press conference later this week.

In his absence, Davide Zappacosta lined up at left wing-back with Victor Moses on the right. It was the latter who produced on the night, scoring from a Cesc Fabregas deflected pass in between Hazard’s goals. It was Moses’ second goal in three starts.

He helped Chelsea keep their fourteenth clean sheet of the campaign, their seventh in ten Gameweeks. That provided a welcome reprieve for those still holding Andreas Christensen.

The Dane was again withdrawn early on 73 minutes, replaced by Gary Cahill, who dropped to the bench. But Christensen booked his clean sheet, a first since Gameweek 19 having missed out on shut-outs in Gameweeks 23 and 24 due to injuries that saw him depart short of the hour-mark.

Sturridge blow for Baggies

As for the Baggies, their plight remains perilous though their first-half performance will have given Alan Pardew some encouragement.

Daniel Sturridge’s injury after just two minutes is a major concern, particularly with Jay Rodriguez facing an FA charge that could see him suspended for a lengthy spell.

The Baggies boss is optimistic, though, that Sturridge’s latest injury setback will be a short one.

“We’re hoping it’s not too bad. We don’t think it’s a tear or anything. It might keep him out of the FA Cup (match against Southampton on Saturday), but he could be back in a couple of weeks.

In Fantasy terms, West Brom continue to offer slim pickings, though should they go out of the FA Cup to Southampton, their Gameweek 31 fixture with Bournemouth would make them a more attractive proposition.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi all

I've written a short piece on quality v quantity in our planning for the blanks, based on my experience last year

    Hope it's useful!

Pod back next Tuesday - potentially with Ben Crellin if all of the blanks are resolved :). If not, will be with Ben the week after next!

Sometimes you can do all this planning for weeks and it all comes down to one player (Josh King last year).

Don't over-complicate things and do not break apart your team for the blank.

This year we even have the FH chip which is designed for such an occasion.

Thankfully 2 or 3 Liverpool assets seem to be the “quality” currently. So they are a given.

Hopefully a few cupsets can bring balance to quality and quantity.

Yeah, good stuff... I am trying to get quantity for BGW31 this season nonetheless as I’m trailing over 100pts in my ML and feel I gotta do something different... And it can work out too if I get really lucky in GW31... Plus the key is to try to achieve both quality and quantity I think as they are not always mutually exclusive...

      Nice article,
I too have painful memories of a similar story last season in which I brought in players 3/4/5 games ahead of the blank in preparation only for them to blank every gameweek up to the blank, & in 28! Matt Phillips being the worst as he actually ended up getting injured days before gw28! Lol

I really like your real name ^^

I agree, 9-10 players of quality is better than 11-12 with lower quality for this particular bgw.

Myself, I had Firmino and Salah before I heard about the blanks, and have kept. So far, so good. Also I had Pickford.

Got in Shaqiri for to okay goalscoring rounds recently, and a Deulofou who unfortunately didn't work miracles this gw.

For me, all those five are quality. Only quantity move I have made, and of course regret, so far is Ibe, who might get a match in gw31 if wba loses to soton in the fa cup. Same as your Moting - he's got to go if he doesn't deliver.

Cheers for the article, made me more certain that my strategy so far is valid ^^

Great article, and very painful too. I too ignored Kane that week while my 3 main mini league rivals that season captained Kane, got 40 points over me and took the mini league with it, ultimately. A sad day.

Anyway, this year, to avoid that fate, who are the key big hitters who have form and fixture prior to a probable blank in GW31, and thus may be ignored at our peril?

Arsenal, certainly have the fixtures - Ramsey, Miki, Aubemayang good options

Hazard - typically in great form as soon as everyone sells him, he's quite low owned though and expensive, and has united and city up next, and Barcelona twice. Can probably be ignored fairly safely.

Mahrez - Still a few questions marks over his reintegration into the side, and form once he is back in it.

Man City - De Bruyne looks rotation proof at present, and in wonderful form. Certainly one to target. Aguero similar, but the returns of Jesus, Sane need to be taken into account. Once Jesus is back he's probably expendable. Sterling continues to produce.

Spurs - Well Kane, obviously. But a double up is probably worth it with Son/Eriksen/Alli, or with one of the defenders (Vertonghen my preferred).

With Laca out for a while, Auba looks more like a gem for the upcoming month. Mkhi perhaps. Ramsey more of a fluke.

KDB and Sterling on City will be great, until the premiership is secured.

Toby ahead of Vertonghen of the Spurs defs. Kane will be sold only the last week before the blank.

        Others - ignore ^^

He already was, Auba ineligable for Europe so Laca was going to play the european games. But yeah he does look like a gem. Problem is fitting him in though, I have Aguero, Firmino, Wilson up front at the moment. Aguero likely to become Kane, but no room for Auba. Its the same story in midfield, I'm questioning who I could move on :/

You reckon? Pochettino was saying yesterday that he won't risk Toby's career by playing him just yet, and was prepping him for the FA cup game only. I think Vertonghen is a far more secure pick than toby at present. Agree on Kane.

            Yo mate!

Laca injured definitely giving me cause for thought on Auba - is he worth bringing in for bha WAT after mci?

I think Spurs (cpl HUD bou) the other side as you say to size up - Nick I think considering bringing Mr. Eriksen in!

I wonder what happens now to be honest - it feels like a real crossroads in terms of fixtures stiffening for some sides and loosening for others, plus a lot of cash (Alonso, predominantly, but I also own Sanchez OOOOOOPS) swilling around. The way forward is not yet clear.

Definitely, 100% need that cupset or two to give us more options: if Huddersfield beat United, for example, then Sanchez stays!

              Afternoon!

You have a similar 3 up front to me, who would you replace with Auba? I guess you could do an upgarde of wilson combined with a downgrade of Sanchez perhaps...

Yeah I like Eriksen as a pick, I've held Son through his blanks so hoping he can repay me in the next 3! I seem to have a terrible habit of being patient with players through poor patches though, only to ditch them just before they come good again, so that will probably happen again lol.

Yeah it certainly is a fixture turning point. Theres actually a decent case for a wildcard, but the likely layout of the blanks and doubles and the teams involved makes your suggested option of a GW32 wildcard the more attractive to me. Its quite marginal though.

I am the last man still owning Schindler, so I'd quite like United to win that one actually 😉 However Bournemouth v WBA being on would be handy for me 🙂

Have two cash cows basically in Sanchez and Alonso. Lots of factors to come in the Cup and who that opens up, basically, in deciding which one I milk.

If it's Auba, it'll have to be a complex move involving a -8 and all sorts of jiggery pokery with both of them going and Wilson also going... so it might be one for the wildcard - unless Sheffield United (who I am now a huge fan of) beat Leicester in which case the Arsenal game goes ahead.

Haha oh man - I was looking at bottle of the bracket Haderonjagajaja as a signing actually, maybe he will collide (geddit?) with some points soon as his chance creation is... well, adequate 😀

I think Bou WBA being on would be handy for a lot of people - I have a spot in my team for "cheap crap" and I'm looking at Mariappa, Haderonajajja and that ilk as the Kenny replacement. The beautiful man that is Simon Francis could come into play lol

Great article Tom. The captain pick really nailed you last year, unfortunate. This year the good thing is a team like Liverpool have a nice run-up, as do Everton. The first decision for me is which two to get rid of out of Otamendi, Alonso, Choupo-M and Lingard (shambles foursome)... VVD, Walcott, Shaqiri on the radar...

Interesting article. However, I think this comparison between teams is very skewed. You cant really compare scores to another team that just used WC prior to this period, you would expect the WC team to do better regardless. Also, a lot of the difference between scores in the BGW is due to captaincy, which could easily have gone the other way.

Totally agree with your main point though, think having to deal with deadwood after the BGW gets underestimated.

Sup bro - yeah I did write a paragraph on that but removed it. It's only an illustrative story to make the point, as with everything I could caveat it to the hilt and back to cover off all of the "buts" however I didn't think that was particularly interesting! As you have done in getting the point of it, I assumed people would engage brain 😀

Definitely the case that the BGW is blinding a lot of people - been throwing some Choupexit plans on twitter and been asked why I am removing someone with a game in the BGW!
Plus the inevitable, ubiquitous Salah (c) which kind of means with 7-8 players you're probably going to be OK!

It's a good article and I agree with it.

I would add that such is the general obsession with BGWs and DGWs and chips and when to play them that the simple management of the weeks immediately in front of you can get lost. That's a trap. The chips are there to aid your strategy, not to govern or define it.

Thanks for this, although this is a very specific example of your team being worse off than another for a specific period of gameweeks. Had you kept Kane instead of aguero, or brought in King, you would have smashed him.

Essentially over that period (or any similar), there would be a multitude of choices that would have ended up with a score that beat your rival and hence a different conclusion on your part.

I agree that you shouldn't be hamstrung by thinking only about the BGW, but that we shouldn't belittle good planning either

WHY couldn't KUN have rolled out his double hattie during Bobby F's jammy run..???!

I've been on board with Kun since GW17, the Morata injury...My ML rivals hopped on Bobby, and then onto Kun in perfect harmony with their form switches 🙁 🙁 🙁 FPL Sucks 🙂

Which players would you be getting in on a wildcard now?
(which Spurs trio most importantly and which budget keeper, I am looking at Kane, Davies and Tripper with Lowton and someone like Naughton on the bench to cover for rotation)

Don't think Firmino will keep his form going! With CL back rotation will kick in and he'll also play on wing sometimes. Also does best away from home when teams play out. Next 4 has 3 home games and away to Utd

      2 questions:
      1. Anyone know the respective dates by when we should know the fixtures for GW 31, 34, 35 and 37?
      2. Also what is the popular advice for when to play WC if you've used your FH? My thinking is around GW32 to make the most of the remaining fixtures but blank GW35 will be a risk.

I can only say for gw31, you'll know this weekend if no draws and for the draws youll know midweek GW28
I used mine now, but not that popular, most will use in the DGW 34

Captaincy - clearly captaining Salah will grant good returns week in week out, but do we dare to hope for more by switching the armband to Kun/Kane/Haz for tasty fixtures? Salah seems to have a 15ish point ceiling, whereas the others can hit 18-21. FPL greed at its finest..

I feel I’m making better progress now that I’m captaining Salah and the points to be made are more on the “surrounding” players in my team!

IMO, the way to go is packing your team full of as many premiums as possible and getting very cheap, good value fodder (4th mids/3rd strikers) to enable that. Then the struggle is choosing the "best" captain out of your premiums to maximise their value.

Just captain Salah (most owned and capitan player) don’t worry about captaining the other heavy hitters as they protect your team against other players captaining them (to a degree) the trick is finding those perfect fodder players....

I honestly think it will define our season from here on out. Captaining Salah means the average will rarely be anything but high, whereas risking it with Kun/Kane/Haz could result in nice rank jumps every so often (which could make all the difference). It's a good dilemma to have, I suppose!

Would rather have Salah's 15s than a couple of twenties with many 1s and 2s. Besides who said Salah has a ceiling of 15? If he had the chance to face a flappy Schmeichel he can easily grab a hattrick.

      Fixture shift

Definate fixture shift taking place ahead of the next gameweek, and it concerns a lot of big teams and heavy hitters. who are the players to target, and the players to drop in favour of them?

Positive fixture swings for Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal (from GW29), and negative fixture swings for Chelsea, Man U and Man C. Are any players fixture proof?

        So much this.
The fixture swing is massive starting next GW, and if it wasn't for BGW 35, I would have wild-carded this week and played FH in 31.
A number of players from the template team have a miserable run of fixtures
Otamendi, Alonso, Jones, Sterling, Hazard, Kun all having poor fixtures + a possible blank in 31
        How do we navigate this??

I think Vertonghen is pretty safe whether Spurs play 3 or 4 at the back. Alderweirald not fully fit yet, and once he is, he would replace Sanchez of anyone if Spurs go with 4 at the back IMO.

Theres a slim chance of VVD being rested, but he is their premier defender now, and far less of a risk than Gomez, TAA, Robertson, Lovren or Matip. I think Klopp would do well to allow VVD to develop a partnership with someone, not that he's done that yet lol

      First time questioner here:
      1) What’s the ‘optimal’ plan for teams with just the WC/BB left?
      2) Who are the non-Liverpool targets for GW31?
      3) Is Mahrez a viable option again?

    24. Rhinos

Do you think groupthink has undone the scouts recently? You all agreed kun not worth ripping your teams up for, was this a mistake or is it that just being results orientated

    25. FPL Virgin

      1) Do we really need to waste a free hit chip to deal with just 3 projected blanks in GW35? Especially when GW31 has double the projected blanks and is likely to be a barren wasteland for good fixtures.

      2) What is the opportunity cost of ignoring players with good fixtures in the next 3 but a blank in GW31?

      3) The elephant in the room. It's easy to select Aguero when you have a blank slate like with a scout pick selection or a watch list. But did the scoutcast team get it completely wrong on Aguero with their own personal teams? (Disclaimer: I know I did!)

      4) What advice would you give Andy's team? The template hasn't worked for him. Bold differential moves like getting Sanchez hasn't worked, either.

I think that makes it clearer. Don't commit to too
Many for gw31, then couple of hits for 34 double and free hit 35, get your players back. I'd much rather have my FH back over wildcard I think but we shall see!

Think Andy knew what was coming... Classic fan excitement of a new big signing with a great fixture. Unfortunately Jose has rules for players where as Wenger god bless him just lets them all attack whenever they like. Sanchez for me loses 1.5-2 million in value playing for united not Arsenal. If he'd gone to city would have been different imo

        1. The Rumour Mill
          • 7 Years

I agree with you. Signing Sanchez has also had the knock on effect of moving their most in form attacker out of position (Martial), and appears to have compromised Lingard too. Theres something going on with Pogba too now, but not sure if thats related to Sanchez or not.

I think Pogba is actually an enigma who is entirely unsuited to playing in a 4-2-3-1. From Jonathan Wilson's column in the guardian:

"Pogba remains an enormous frustration, manifestly talented and capable of the moments of penetration, but without an obvious role in a 4-2-3-1: he lacks the control, as Graeme Souness keeps pointing out, to play deep, but is too dependent on space in front of him to be the No 10. Here his touch was oddly heavy, his passing awry, his temptation always to overcomplicate, and it was no surprise when he was withdrawn as soon as United had fallen behind."

Its also worth pointing out that Deschamps doesn't know what to do with Pogba either - remember how Sissoko of all people completely overshadowed Pogba in Euro 2016 playing in the 4-2-3-1.

Its 4-3-3 or bust for Pogba i'm afraid.

Well, that's not strictly true he was playing in the double pivot earlier in the season when they were battering terrible teams.

When you add another player to a team that doesn't do his defensive work (Sanchez), then maybe you can't necessarily get away with playing a right-footed winger at left-back.

Correct. Early on in the season there was a succession of 4 goal hauls from Utd, but most of those goals were arriving in the last 10 minutes against tired, poor sides, having bought on Fellaini and also Martial late on. It wasn't ever sustainable consistent goalscoring really.

Totally agree on martial, altho seems a great transfer definitely a gamble with rumblings of Sanchez not being much of a team player, takes martials spot, demotes rashford further down and on wages that could affect the likes of pogba.

And as for pogba, watched Paul scholes say exactly what oh mention with absolute confidence. Watched him a lot at Juve and he just isn't a play maker, he's a runner/driver who needs releasing further forward.

On (1) I believe the thinking is that for GW35 the players who blank will have 1, or perhaps 2, DGWs in 34 and 37 as well so you will want to have a team full of them, which makes planning for that blank harder. Whereas for GW31 you have time to get into position for the blanks and then probably wildcard afterwards to get back out.

I'm still dubious though - the rather excellent quality/quantity article linked above makes the point that by limiting your choice for the next few GWs you will probably miss out on good scores from players who will blank in GW31 between now and then - it's not just a 1 GW problem. Still, I'm the last person to be giving advice at the moment.

Has the fear/uncertainty of the BGW 31 been many FPL managers undoing over the past few weeks? Have we lost more points over these weeks that we would have “ignoring” the potential blanks?

He has scores the 5th most PL goals (behind Kane, Salah, Aguero, Sterling - all highly owned) and has scored four in his last four? Besides, Leicester’s best run of fixtures is yet to come while the other top storing forwards will be busy playing CL

Is there actually a recipe for BGWs e.g. 3 games 6 players, 4 games 8 players, 5 games 11 players?

If it's only 4 games GW31 is it even worth free-hitting to get 4-5 probable 2 pt defenders/mids?

I'm going to avoid all the inevitable DGW, blank GW questions and ask something that maybe I should simply submit an article about Jonty. Expected stats. Is there a misinterpretation of them. Very often we look at a teams XG delta and conclude that a positive delta means they should regress to the mean and have been lucky. Ditto other XG stats. But given XG is based upon data of all shots from similar positions, it's by definition coming up with a number for the average player. I would argue that the likes of Manchester City and individual players too should always have a very positive XG delta because their players (and other teams) are simply much better than the average.

I think there is a need for a adjusted Expected stats and I just haven't concluded a method yet.

Are Man United defenders rubbish? I never thought I would say that given their CS but it was a journalist discussion I listened to at the weekend saying Jones had never progressed, Smalling had gone backwards and that the fullbacks are simply converted wingers who can't defend. Man U were even compared to Arsenal in that their transfer policy seems to focus on attack and not defense.

Intuitively it seems wrong to me... but then when you look at just how many shots Man U concede vs goals conceded, could (to Granville's delight) it simply be a case that an exception goalkeeper in DDG is making a sloppy defense look better than they actually are? And can this persist?

With Arsenal's fixture swing, and the fight for top 4 (Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Utd!!), are City assets now dispensable as they shift to focus on the Cup competitions?

Are Alli and Eriksen options again?

Jonty justifies missing out on a bucket load of points from an FPL player by claiming to have the same player in another obscure, rarely played fantasy football game = 3 points.

Mark refuses to entertain even the slightest bit of criticism for Harry Kane = 5 points.

Andy sits still when the camera isn't on him = 2 points.

I'm guessing because it's between two DGWs. Most players who have a double in 34 blank in 35 and have another double in 37, so it's very likely people will wildcard in 32-33 and fill their team with DGW players which will result in close to 0 players in 35 and only one or two FTs.

        1. Hotdogs for Tea

          not at all ...
          - players that have a double in 34 are those that blank in 31
          - players that have a double in 37 are those that blank in 35 and these 35 blanks are much reduced (50% maybe) compared to 31

For us non free hit chip owners or those saving it should every transfer for the next 3 GWs be made with the 31 BGW in mind? How many players should be the bare minimum we get out for 31? My thinking is should we be sacrificing potentially good points scores for the next 3 weeks for one maybe less likely to as much but with a game in 31. This approach doesn't sit well with me and am thinking if we get 7-8 players out for 31 with 3 Liverpool assets and salah captain we would easily make up the points lost in 31 over the next 3. Thoughts please?

Alonso/Otamendi replacements? Are they worth keeping?

Why are we not looking at Hazard considering his clear baps potential that you don't get with other premium options?

I have 2FT and My other transfer is Kun To Kane if everything goes well.

113pts this gw with Hazard (C).

There is couple problems In My team J. Rodriguez, Depoitre and Zanka but i need To keep those players In My team because i use My FH allready. I hope that soton will drop WBA In fa Cup and ManU makes same thing To Huddersfield.

I think I’m keeping Alonso. Hop fully back for next gameweek. I’m more inclined to drop Otamendi as they have the league won now. More likely to now be rotated. City don’t seem to care about conceding again more! Whereas Chelsea are going to be in a fight for the top 4 till end of the season

Can I add a rough with the smooth?
Didn't get any sympathy but here goes.
Nice and smooth with a glory rough.
Smooth: Captained Aguero and Hazard did well for me and had the other usual suspects.
Rough: After having Christensen for 5 games and getting a total of 2 points out of him I sold 3 weeks ago for Alonso. I checked the score last night and was buzzing, I knew I needed 18 points to hit my first century of the season. I saw Hazard grabbed two without a yellow so I did the maths and knew that was 16 from him. I checked and saw Alonso didn't play (even though KOL swore he would) and was pretty annoyed but with Foster's 2 points thats 18 points exactly. Woohoo, 100. Wait, wait, auto subs, who's first? No, please, be Goldson, for the love of God be Goldson. But there's Francis, sat there first on my bench smoking a cigar with pegs on his nipples and small party hat upon his horrible little head.

    Hi Guys

looking for a GW31 playing replacement for RLC.
I need someone who is fairly nailed, under 5M and who can potentially bring some returns.

I was thinking about Emre Can. 4.8. Great Fixtures but is he that nailed?
Is Capoue a viable interesting option? I am not sure he is this much nailed , is he?

    Adrian / Gomes
    Alonso / Mee / Ogbonna / Robertson / Holgate
    Salah / Sterling / Willian / Surnam / McArthur
    Aguero / Kane / Wilson

    1FT 0.4 ITB

    A) Gomes -> Fabianski or Pope
    B) Willian -> Shaquiri or Gros
    C) Surnam -> Milivojevic
    D) Other

Willian should at least start playing, while Surnam has been a fire that has been burning in my team for a while. Meanwhile, I am rapidly moving into problems with my keepers and I feel a move to Pope or Fabianksi (favouring this one) would probably sort that area for the rest of the season.
