Antonio Valencia has sustained a hamstring injury and could now face up to four weeks on the sidelines, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The news has filtered through from Ferguson’s post-match press conference, following tonight’s 2-0 win at Ajax in the Europa League and has now been confirmed by United’s official site. Valencia came off the bench to play a major part in his side’s second goal, sustaining the injury in the process. He was immediately replaced on 86 minutes.

While the injury will come as a major blow to United, the timing does at least coincide with the return to fitness of both Ashley Young and Nani. Young started tonight’s tie and opened the scoring with a smart finish as United outclassed their Dutch opponents in the second period. Nani was also in Ferguson’s starting lineup.

For Fantasy managers, Valencia’s absence would pose a problem with no automatic switch available. Valencia has been in sparkling form since his return to the fold and has attracted a steady flow of investment. His Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price has risen from a low of 7.8, to 8.3, as a run of 10 assists in 11 league games led to a significant increase in ownership. Those recent investors now face losing Valencia for a spell that will see United’s fixtures improve markedly – potentially losing out on continued returns.

Owners of Wayne Rooney will also be concerned – Valencia’s supply line has been hugely profitable for United of late and Nani and Young will need to step up to fill the void. It will be interesting to see if United’s goal output suffers, once deprived of Valencia’s quality.

Those now in the market for a replacement will likely prefer to look to Nani rather than Young – his price has fallen to 9.9 following injury but that’s still a significant jump from Valencia’s sale value. Nani may also take several matches to adjust back to the pace and we shouldn’t forget that he had scored just a single goal in seven league games prior to his recent absence.

Tom Cleverley also presents an intriguing alternative. He, too, returned to the United first XI in Holland tonight and, if he can establish a starting role in midfield, offers a cheap route to United’s attacking potential at just 5.1 in the FPL.

Cleverley was replaced on 61 minutes by Paul Scholes in this evening’s game and, like Nani, will likely need time to adjust back to the pace of matters. Should he show signs of form and regular starts, however, Cleverley could see increased investment as a result of Valencia’s spell on the sidelines.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

May aswell save the transfer, unless you'd play him over Dempsey, Bale, Sessegnon or Silva?

    Valencia & Richards > Silva & Evans?

Team at the moment (2 free transfers and 2.5m in the bank)

    Krul
    Richards Kompany Simpson
    McClean Dempsey Bale Valencia
    Ba Aguero RVP
subs : Vorm, Taiwo, Pilkington, Kelly

What ya reckon? I figure Silva is worth sacrificing a City defender for, plus i think we'll probably score against them anyway.

I think Silva is going to have a field day against us. No rush anyway as i won't be doing anything for a week at least.

Mata has looked better of late and is one to consider but it's the fact i think we'll score which is making me want to do it, plus i think Silva will slaughter us πŸ™

I'd do those two transfers, as it sets you up for the long term with United defensive coverage.

Is the money left over going to be used in Aguero to Rooney the week after.

Does anyone know which 2 are the preferred central Defenders for Spurs (if everyone was fit). Dawson and King? It's hard to tell becasue Nelson and Gallas are not exactly typical sit on the bench types.

OK thanks. I find it strange why Nelson would have made that move from BB knowing he would not really play often. Maybe he wanted to slow down because he's getting on a bit. So we recon Dawson is nailed on? If so Is it worth downgrading BAE to Dawson to get cash?

You don't want to piss about with VC and C, that's just asking for trouble...

By all means keep Enrique in (I prefer instant the instant gratification of points on the board) and have automatic subs boost your total but don't captain him... the worst case scenario is that Aguero gets injured in warm up leaving you with no double points...

Balotelli is a rotation risk with Dzeko plus it seems Tevez is back in the fold. Ba is the real deal despite Cisse in my opinion, is a guaranteed started and on penalties

My wife was planning on bringing in Aguero and Dave, for RVP and Rodellega, but Valencia's injury and the news that Dave will be playing a friendly in Africa on the wednesday before the Sunderland game mean she needs to look again. Who would be the best option from these for the next few. Money no object.

    Midfield. Mata, Nani, Yaya, other
    Forward. Aguero, Rooney, other

She's thinking Mata and Aguero, or Yaya and Rooney.

If she goes Aguero, then he would become Rooney in GW28.

This would mean keeping and benching Rodellega. A risk seeing as Huth is definitely out. This might be a week for a hit, with all of the plum fixtures on offer.

    Thoughts?

GW 26 has promise of good returns. In GW27 cant expect too much v tott. Plus Young is back so SAF can rest him and still have good cover on the wing.

If you get rid of him now, you can always bring him back in for GW28. Might Valencia lose starting role to Young (who scored tonight)? Might he retun and play WB?
