Dugout Discussion – Gameweek 38

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have one last chance for mini-league glory as the 2017/18 season comes to its conclusion this Sunday afternoon.

Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane, the top two players in our Captain Poll for Gameweek 38 and rivals for the Golden Boot, both start.

Three goals ahead of the Spurs striker, Salah seeks a tenth double-figure home haul as Liverpool welcome Brighton to Anfield.

Sadio Mane is passed fit to start for the Merseysiders, while Roberto Firmino and Dominic Solanke are also in the XI against a Seagulls’ side that they have already beaten 5-1 earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Kane collides with a Leicester defence that he’s scored five goals against in their previous two league meetings. However, owners of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Ben Davies are left disappointed as all three are named on the bench at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho is true to his word and makes numerous changes to the Man United teamsheet.

The likes of David De Gea and Chris Smalling are – as their manager suggested – both rested, though there’s no Anthony Martial in the squad to face Watford at Old Trafford, as the Frenchman misses out through injury.

In the blue half of Manchester, Gabriel Jesus is the man to miss out up front, with Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva all starting against a Southampton side with two clean sheets in 17 home matches. Ederson and Kyle Walker are named among the subs, while David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi miss out altogether at St Mary’s.

Arsene Wenger rolls out the big-hitters for his final match in charge of Arsenal, with Alexandre Lacazette flanked by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the trip to Huddersfield.

Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud are named on the Chelsea teamsheet at Newcastle but there’s no place for Marcos Alonso, who drops to the bench. Eight goals in nine against the Magpies makes Giroud a potentially big differential today.

The most transferred in player for Gameweek 38, Wilfried Zaha is again named up front by Roy Hodgson for Crystal Palace’s clash with West Brom. The Ivory Coast international has delivered 14 points in each of his last two at Selhurst Park.

Finally, Marko Arnautovic is another out-of-position starter who could have a big impact in the final standings.

The Austrian has ten goals and six assists since being moved up front in Gameweek 16 and could prove the difference as David Moyes looks to get one over former club Everton at the London Stadium.

Booked whilst on the bench. No idea whether he will be subbed out or not as he didn't actually play.

Rules say: “If your Goalkeeper plays 0 minutes in the Gameweek, he will be substituted by your replacement Goalkeeper, if he played in the Gameweek.”

But if your sub gk didn’t play either, you’ll stick with the -1 I guess

No idea, sorry. Not even sure I'll get Fabianski on for Ederson. I'm just quoting the rule book :/

You get Fabianski on. FPL comfirmed on twitter.

Only people with a non-playing sub gk get the -1.

That's good news. Though I missed out on mini league title by 8 points (was nearly 30 behind before today) because I wasn't brave enough to take a -8 for Robertson.

              Ifs, buts and maybes eh?

Potentially Bamba? Doherty at Wolves is a decent option.

From the playoffs...if my beloved Rams frustrate the footballing world and batter our way up...Curtis Davies would be good for BPS.

Sean Morrison will be my Cardiff pick, Warnock likes the long throw approach, I think he had something like 27 touches in the opponents box one game which is some going.

Managers with Mahrez and/or Vardy. What made you keep after Leicester lost 5-0 to Crystal Palace and had WHU(h), ARS(h) and TOT(a) remaining?

Did you have other fires to put out and were reluctant to take points hits, or would you have sold if you had another 1m ITB?

Even Jonty declared Leicester on the beach ahead of DGW37, so I'm curious what the thought process was of really good fantasy football managers that kept one or the other.

Thought taking hits to get rid of nailed DGW players was daft, however poor their form was. Was also determined to get at least 1 return out of Mahrez before I ditched - with hindsight, I should've kept him this week too. Vardy had enough form in his time with my team & at a low enough price point to be worth persevering.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 2 days ago

Nice one. Vardy seemed the easier one to keep with him being on pens and two home games in the DGW. But Mahrez at 8.6m? So many other options at that price. I don't know how anyone other than a casual keeps him for GW38. Genuinely!

Got Mahrez in GW 30 in preparation for blanks around that time

Only reason I had him in was there were issues elsewhere to get rid of... If he didn't get a return in GW37 I would have taken him out for GW38 but he scored in 37 and had other issues to resolve in 38 (Willian / Pogba)

It was my intention but with so many rumours going around this morning it was a change of strategy.
I wanted a playing squad so Barnes went to JAyew and with uncertainty with DSilva I decided to shuffle 5th mid Matic to RLC.
I stuck Mahrez as 1st bench to cover rotation (Silva).
So Luck played a part but I didn't want to shift someone who was as close to certain to start as Mahrez.
      77 - 4 btw.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years
        6 years, 2 days ago

Nicely done too. I made some good moves in losing Mahrez and Vardy - brought in Sané and Jesus, who both returned good points, except for Jesus in the double.

I like the idea of making sure all my squad are playing for GW38, or as near as can be. I was left with Barnes on the bench and 10 men in my first 11 because I sold nailed starters. That said, I was a bit unlucky with Alli, Jesus, Vertonghen and Naughton not starting. I'll take this advice into the end of next season. Thanks Gnu!

    4. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 2 days ago

Earlier I was questioned about why I would even sell them.... Don't get it myself

I figured they were okay to keep for the double but not for Spurs, so I had to sell at least one in GW37, then consider whether I should keep Vardy for the final week. In the end I sold both in GW37 for a hit.

The only way I'd have had both for GW38 would be due to poor planning, and even having one would have been poor planning in my book, since I thought there were better alternatives if I took the hit in GW37 and spread it over 3 games. Boy was I wrong in the end! 🙁

      1. Twisted Saltergater

That's the thing. If Alli or Eriksen were at Mahrez's price, or Jesus at Vardy's price... would you not have switched? Sometimes, I think it comes down to being in the fortunate position where you don't have funds for an upgrade. Or a more pressing issue.

Simply had other fires to put out and didn't think it was worth a -4 to lose Vardy, I did rage transfer Mahrez out for a -4 but lucked out with Tadic getting a haul.

Money league won by my keeper Fabianski saving rival's Shaqiris penalty. 10 point swing there 😀 Thanks for everyone for the season

Over the course of the season, did accumulating TVs help your season, with it all being said and done?

Do you think Salah would be able to replicate the points he has amassed this season next season?

That if he is still plying his trade in the EPL.

      Not if he's a striker.

      1. TheCurseOfRaheem

He would have way more bonus points as a striker though. Would be close.

Think he will still be a mid. A striker position btw would have given Salah many more bonus points than what he has had.

I've had 13 green arrows out of 14 too. I always tend to do my own thing and find the game easier once formations and form have been established. I'd put my scores since GW29 up against any team.

Shot myself in the foot by not getting Salah early on, and to a lesser degree Kane. Two punts on Sanchez did the damage.

I love the Scoutcase, but it infuriates me when everyone is following the same tactic. It's supposed to be entertainment.

I was watching it and watching it again..And all over again and I was just suffering. I told myself, man, you have got to play your own game. And I did. I think they do a great job but I think I can do it too. Thanks for the inputs and all the best next season.

you too, mate. Am going to try following the crowd early on with ownership, then play my own game from the halfway point. See how that goes!

Our U21s need to put in transfer requests and get out the country IMO. Rashford is not aiding his development at Utd, IMO, by being on the bench for example. People say if they are good enough they would play. But the thing is they are competing with 25 / 26 / 27 year-old players from overseas who are at their peak - they are highly unlikely to be as good as them at 19/20 - but they could end up being better by the time they are 23 / 24 with matches under their belt.
