Team of the Season – Mohamed Salah

There are no prizes for guessing who the highest-polling midfielder was in our end-of-season vote.

And following last night’s injury in the Champions League final, it is perhaps a fitting time to dedicate our next team of the season article to Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian’s fitness and availability for the World Cup is now shrouded in doubt. However, regardless of his participation in the tournament, Salah’s achievements in his debut Premier League campaign deserve another tribute.

He ended 2017/18 as the Golden Boot winner with 32 goals and broke Luis Suarez’s all-time Fantasy Premier League record, finishing on a total of 303 points. Salah also supplied 12 assists, the most by a Liverpool player this season.

Incredibly, the Egyptian delivered attacking returns in 75% of his 36 appearances, failing to record a goal or assist in only nine of those fixtures.

Salah’s average of 8.4 points per match was better than any player who made more than one league appearance, while he was the only Fantasy asset to feature ten or more times (11 in all) in FPL’s weekly Dream Team.

Starting the season at £9.0m, the same price as Philippe Coutinho and £0.5m cheaper than Sadio Mane, Salah kicked off his Liverpool career with a goal and assist in the Reds’ 3-3 draw at Watford.

Having surprisingly been benched for Liverpool’s subsequent league fixture against Crystal Palace, Salah then matched his opening day 11-point return in the Gameweek 3 win over Arsenal.

By that point, Fantasy managers were already starting to take notice.

Salah began the season with an ownership of 22.5%, featuring in 874,608 FPL teams from the off. His ownership – and price – rose immediately the following Gameweek, never again to dip below the one million mark.

Seven goals in four fixtures between Gameweeks 11 and 14 saw Salah’s price rise from £9.2m to £9.7m, with the former Roma winger breaking the £10.0m barrier ahead of Liverpool’s Gameweek 18 encounter against Bournemouth.

Salah’s attacking returns continued unabated throughout the season. The one-time Chelsea midfielder never failed to go more than two league games without recording a goal or assist, while a four-month run of scoring in every Liverpool home game between Boxing Day and late-April accounted for 104 points of his total score.

That sequence, of course, included four goals and an assist in Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Watford in Gameweek 31.

Salah’s 29 points, arriving in a blank Gameweek in which 88.8% of the top 10,000 FPL managers captained him, was the highest single Gameweek score by any Fantasy player this season.

Salah’s price peaked at £10.7m following this landmark return, finishing at £10.6m in Gameweek 38: a season-spanning increase of £1.6m was, unsurprisingly, the highest rise among all FPL players.

Come the end of the campaign, Salah was the most-owned player in FPL, sitting in 56.7% of squads. Transferred in 4,223,518 times across the season, only Harry Kane and Roberto Firmino earned more buyers over the 38 Gameweeks, though these two players also suffered a higher number of sales.

With many Fantasy managers having a sizeable amount of money tied up in Salah’s escalating value, the Egyptian was sold on only 2,661,455 occasions – almost half the number of sales that Kane experienced.

The list of impressive statistics rolls on.

Salah’s average of 91.3 minutes per goal was better than all other midfielders who made more than one appearance this season: Raheem Sterling’s next-best rate of a goal every 144 minutes provides some context as to the Egyptian’s incredible output.

Totals of 144 goal attempts, 113 shots inside the box, 66 shots on target and 43 big chances were also unsurpassed among FPL midfielders.

Salah was presented with a chance every 20.3 minutes, the lowest mean among midfielders who played more than 1,000 minutes of Premier League football in 2017/18, and had more penalty box touches than all other players in his classification.

No Liverpool midfielder made more successful dribbles (79), completed more key passes (62) or created more big chances (12) than Salah this season.

Despite all this, the FPL Bonus Points System (BPS) wasn’t particularly kind to Salah, however.

Only Watford’s Richarlison and Nordin Amrabat had inferior averages than Salah’s 17.6 minutes per Baseline BPS among midfielders, with Richarlison the only player in Salah’s classification to fire more shots off target.

Salah missed more big chances (23) than any other midfielder, while Wilfried Zaha, Dele Alli and Riyad Mahrez were the only three midfielders to be dispossessed on more occasions than Salah (143).

All these factors combined meant that, in spite of an outstanding debut year on Merseyside, the Liverpool winger earned bonus points in only 11 of the 24 matches he scored in.

The Prospects

First off, the bad news. A substantial price rise is inevitable next term, which could see Salah valued anywhere between £12.0m and £14.0m.

Debate also rages as to whether the Egyptian could be reclassified as a forward in 2018/19, mirroring Firmino’s transition from a midfielder at the start of this season.

Such a scenario – while not expected – would certainly change how we reassess our frontlines next season. It would impact heavily on Firmino; the Brazilian was the second most bought player (4.6m) in FPL after being reclassified as a forward in 2017/18.

Following his injury against Real Madrid, Salah could either be coming into the new campaign off the back of a World Cup campaign or perhaps even surgery. Either outcome could see his pre-season disrupted.

If Salah is available for the summer tournament – and the player himself is confident that this will be the case – a quick exit at the group stages for Hector Cuper’s men would be beneficial for Salah’s chances of being fit and firing for the start of next season.

Should injury keep him out, we would instead have to monitor his recovery and his pre-season involvement.

Having missed only two league fixtures in the whole of 2017/18, and starting 34 of those matches, Salah’s importance to Liverpool’s cause was obvious.

Similar to Harry Kane for Spurs, it would seem likely that only injury will keep him out of his manager’s line-ups. That pair could once again be crucial to our seasons and should continue to contest the armband on a regular basis.

Klopp’s summer spending spree looks all the more encouraging for Salah and Liverpool’s prospects next season. The Merseysiders have already acquired central midfielder Naby Keita’s arriving from RB Leipzig and have also been heavily linked to Lyon’s versatile playmaker Nabil Fekir.

Ultimately, if Salah can get near this season’s heroics, he’ll remain a must-have in many managers’ eyes regardless of the outlay.

The PFA Player of the Year’s total of 32 goals was the most any player has managed in a 38-match Premier League season. He also holds the record for scoring in the most fixtures during a Premier League season (24) and for the most teams scored against in a single campaign (17, a joint-high with Ian Wright and Robin van Persie).

That consistency, allied with 15 sets of double-digit hauls, made Salah one of the most secure captain picks in memory and edges him towards a “near essential” status in any Fantasy game.

Anyone willing to take part in some football quizzes if I start hosting them as in the yesteryears? Thinking of hosting a new round of quizzes in around 10 days time, but that of course depends if enough people are interested.

    WC Top Goalscorer:

Look at the topscorer odds and their overall records:

    Messi (9/1) - 61 goals in 123 appearances (0.50 goals a game)
    Neymar (10/1) - 53 in 83 (0.64)
    Griezmann (12/1) - 19 in 51 (0.37)
    Ronaldo (14/1) - 81 in 149 (0.54)
    Gabriel Jesus (16/1) - 9 in 15 (0.60)
    Kane (16/1) - 12 in 23 (0.50)
    Werner (16/1) - 7 in 12 (0.58)
    Lukaku (18/1) - 33 in 66 (0.50)
    Costa (25/1) - 7 in 18 (0.39)
    Cavani (25/1) - 42 in 100 (0.42)
    Suarez (25/1) - 50 in 97 (0.51)
    Lewandowski (33/1) - 52 in 93 (0.56)
    Giroud (40/1) - 30 in 71 (0.43)

    ----------------------------------------------
You generally need to play at least 5 games and score 6 goals to get the Golden Boot. Therefore the process:

    1) Who do you think will make it to the QFs at least and play every game?
    2) Once you have identified yor quarter finalists - who do you think has the fixtures to dominate (think of Klose in WC 2002 vs Saudi Arabia and WC 2006 vs Costa Rica and Ecuador)?
    3) Once you have identified your favoured teams - who has the goalscoring record and goal involvement to snatch enough goals for their side?

Lots of hate being directed towards Ramos for no reason some people would want to cop on to them selves.

Ramos went in on a 50/50 won the ball and Salah got in a tangle and fell awkwardly and got injured. The ref had a perfect view of the incident and seen noting a miss.

The fact that Salah got injured so easily suggests to me that he might not have been in peak condition going into the game.

Some of the abuse being directed towards Ramos is totally ridiculous with calls for “revenge ” like what do people mean by that these daft idiots should be held to account.

    **** happens get over it.

      Couldn’t agree more

Ramos plays the game on the edge like so many others but the Salah injury was just one of those things. They could tangle another 1000 times and that injury wouldn’t happen.

He knew what he was doing. Not sure if he meant to hurt him that bad but he locked arms with him and brought him down. He meant to make a at least shake him up. He also took a cheap shot with an elbow st Kaius right before the first goal

Say what you want about the Salah incident, the fact that he (seemingly deliberately, although you can never tell with these things) elbowed Karius in the face and Karius then went on to have the worst performance of his life is damning to me.
People should remember that that performance from Karius was uncharacteristic after a reasonably solid season.

      1. Syd.

But is this not a classic Liverpool trait that they need somebody to blame. You can’t blame anyone but Karius for those 2 howlers

Sure, but if he was slightly concussed (possible) or just suddenly scared that a player in the opposition who just injured his teammate took what must have felt like a real swipe at him, he might not be operating on his usual level.

And sure, you can say that Karius needs to man up/ it's part of the game but in my opinion it shouldn't be. Blame lies with Karius, but disgusting tactics like the ones Ramos employed shouldn't be a part of football.

If he was slightly concussed which i do not think for a second that he was he should have singled to the bench that he had a problem instead of being a liability to his team.

This kid just did not have the bottle to do the job plain and simple.

It's not that easy to tell if you're concussed. That's why they have tests for that sort of thing

And even if he felt that he was out of sorts, it's quite possible that he felt like he would be an even greater liability if he asksd for a sub.
How many players in the game would willingly signal for a sub after knowing that what they need to do is step up and shake themselves out of it, let alone goalkeepers? If he wasn't concussed (which i concede is reasonably likely) you can't fault him for trying to better himself in game than signalling for a sub. Sure, you can fault him for the mare that followed but the point is that it's Ramos that physically abused him in the first place which (from my viewpoint) is what got him all messed up

Shouldn't you rather say that it's a classic trait amongst supporters in general? Or is it just LFC-supporters who look for solace in blaiming other circumstances than their own perfomances?

It is a contact sport. If you cant stand up to the odd knock you are in the wrong business.

Ramos obliviously smelt weakness from Karius and it did not take much for him to rattle him which is all part of the game.

Lol the odd knock and assault are two entirely different things though.

          Ramos should have seen red.

Funny how the referees in the CL never seem to see any game-changing things like this that go in Real’s favour every single time

          Ramos is a dirty scumbag.

If it was any other player that got in a tangle with Salah then we don’t think much would’ve been made of it.

Ramos is a cynical cheat - end of.
Ok, he's actually a good footballer and if you are a Real Madrid fan he'd undoubtedly be a hero but don't make him out to be some innocent.
What I detest about him and the likes of Pepe before him is his constant diving, holding his eye or whatever to get an opponent sent off or booked and yet the guy is a cowardly anti - footballer.
He should be seen as a great but instead we're discussing his underhand cheating tactics.

You'll find there's a few who refuse to have certain players whether it was Terry, Tevez even Vardy.
Think Doosra refused to get Suarez for that reason.

I thought the last twist or turn when falling with Salah’s arm trapped was a definite intentional slam into the floor
It goes on though , Pool defenders would rough up Ronaldo given half a chance

Amazed that Liverpool players didn’t give it back to them.

Mané was the only one with a bit of fire in his belly who clattered Ramos.

Ramos smiling after the incident just highlighted his intentions.

Yep as Salah was walking off the pitch in tears. Scum bag Ramos was laughing and smirking along with one of the corrupt officials. It was obvious he was so chuffed about what he had done.

I do agree with some of your points but can't really get on board with 'Lots of hate being directed towards Ramos for no reason' - The fact that he's pulled the wool over some people's eyes shows how clever a player he is and how clever a move it was but he knew what he was doing.

He also did what he did and therefore deserves what he gets in response which, realistically, is likely to amount to nothing more than a load of written abuse on the internet, most of which he'll never see.

Ramos had him in arm lock pulling Mo away from the ball. Held onto him until he fell to the floor, pulled his own arm away then dropped all 82 kg on Salah’s arm. You say “The fact that Salah got injured so easily suggests to me that he might not have been in peak condition”. What are you on about ? He nearly had two weeks rest. Look at how many games hes missed over past seasons, hardly missed a game. What a surprise alot of bored City Utd Chelski & Blue Noses around this place.

He was pointing to the fact that players who are not at the peak of their condition are more likely to pick up injuries, which is true.

I do find it very little relatable to this very special incident as most players, regardless of condition, would have suffered the exact same outcome in this particular situation.

Who knows he might have being carrying some kind of knock coming into the game.

When i seen it first although sore looking i did not think it was a bad enough tangle to cause an injury.

The tangle itself would have been enough to cause most players to suffer injury, with the way he's "forced" to land on his shoulder + receiving the weight og Ramos. To large of an impact on whats probabley one of the least stable joints of the body.

Dont think any "knock" contributed thos this incident unfolding like it did. The only contributing factors as I see it, is Ramos making an awful challenge, and chance making it play out in the worst kind of way.

Agree. Ramos is class. There are players in the country as bad as him that don't get slated. To say he tried to dislocate Salah's arm is moronic. He's not Spain's equivalent to the SAS or some Martial arts expert christ.

Saying that I couldn't give a damn if salah is out the world cup...why would I ? So I'm not directly effected. I get pool fans and Egypt fans being annoyed but saying it was intentional...Really???

        Wow.

No. Ramos didnt try and dislocate Salahs arm. Just as John Terry didnt try to injure Chicarito when he kneed him in the back. The question however is, is it acceptable to be roughing up opponents to give yourself an edge?

My understanding was no it is not. Ramos looks to have intentionally locked Salahs arm and hit Karius. Neither action was meant to injure, but both appear to have been meant to intimidate. If you think thats ok then please keep digging this hole.

Some of the things you defend I dont understand. A player could give the ref a right hook and I am pretty sure you would trot out the "its a contact sport" line.

I play footy every week and one of the guys will bodycheck you off the ball. To me thats fine. Elbowing someone in the face for no reason? Not ok.

When did I say anything about elbowing anyone in the face or punching the ref?

You are just being stupid now. But you were just being stupid in the first place.

Was Ramos even blown for a foul? Studio full of ex pros watching the game none thought anything negative about Ramos's play. Ferdinand thought it was great defending. I agree. Ramos is the beat defender in world football and has been at the top of the tree for a long time now.

I'll value my own opinion and the opinion of ex-pros.

You think a body check is ok? If Ramos body checked Salah and injured him you'd be complaining. But a bodycheck is ok in your opinion? Lol. Probably best giving up now rather than spouting anymore tripe.

I'm torn on it. The elbow on Karius was a clear red card if seen and does Ramos no favours.

But for the incident in question, Ramos has tangled with Salah and has locked his arm to pull him down - that's not a sending off offence in itself and nobody can really be certain on an intent to injure.

Without the Karius incident and perhaps Ramos' reputation, I don't think much would have been made of the challenge on its own but I can also see why there's been a reaction and suspicion.

Emotion is still raw, as is the bitter disappointment for some - including me, and I'm not a Liverpool fan by any means. But let's calm it and leave it there.

Go in half hearted and risk him winning the ball?

Anyone that doesn't really understand what Ramos was doing doesn't really understand defending or football. Also they should probably wear fanny pads inside their boxer shorts.

There's no need to twist your arm around someone else's arm when trying to pull them down, and such an action is illegal in other sporting competitions (rugby, judo, etc.) because a player is very vulnerable to injury when one of their arms is trapped and they can't break their fall properly

Ramos could've easily just pulled Salah down by grabbing Salah's arm (with his hand) or jersey. Same effect of cynically stopping him with a much lower risk of inflicting injury

Please explain why Ramos couldn't just tug on Salah's arm or jersey? Same effect of stopping the play to help your defense, but much lower chance of inflicting an injury

Or are you saying that you condone knowingly choosing an action that has a greater risk of injuring the opponent? That's not fair sport. That is just disgusting thuggery at the same level as flopping to get penalties or to get the opposition sent off. You are free to believe that is all okay, and we can just agree to disagree

I didn't say that I thought any of that stuff. That's all projection on your part.

I don't think Ramos went to deliberately injure Salah. He's a defender, it was a strong challenge. It wasn't actually even given as a foul? My memory doesn't recall but it wasn't actually a foul? It definitely wasn't a yellow card as Real didn't have any cards. Ramos won the ball in the challenge. He out muscled Salah.

You are suggesting he should have pulled his shirt. That's a foul, and a card. Ramos conceded neither. Why? Because he's the best defender in world football and he knows what's required to win a champions league.

Have you seen the pace they play at. He's hardly got 20 seconds to decide how he should stop one of the best players around . Had he tugged his shirt he would have got a yellow card for sure also. He made the right decision. The proof is in the pudding. It's just a shame Salah landed badly

The referee didn't call it for some reason, but dragging someone down by locking your arm around theirs is as much a foul as grabbing their arm or jersey. Not being called for a foul or receiving a card for it was just a happy accident.

Maybe he didn't think "I want to injure Salah", but the manner of the challenge is still dangerous and has a high risk of injury, hence why it's illegal in other contact sports. Taking that risk even if it might provide a small advantage imo isn't smart, but just plain dirty and unnecessary.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this matter 🙂

Love the anti-Liverpool rhetoric in this thread/on this website.

          Pretty pathetic, all things considered.

Ramos has a reputation for being aggressive, emotional, erratic and ‘dirty.’

He could’ve knocked Karius out. Clearly fouled Salah. He obviously didn’t set out to dislocate his shoulder or break his arm, but I’m looking at that ‘challenge’ and finding it hard to justify it. It wasn’t acceptable within the laws of the game - it just wasn’t - so I fail to see anyone’s point of view that Ramos is just a ‘physical player, so get over it.’

Let’s face it, loads of people HATE seeing their rivals succeed and that’s fine, it comes with the territory, but for it to cloud other peoples’ judgment is another thing altogether.

Crazy to think anyone can look at his performance and think ‘yeah, he’s just a really good defender - not dirty at all!’

Far too much opinion on here and nowhere enough objectivity. And let’s even begin to say Liverpool would’ve won if Salah remained on the pitch or if Karius didn’t mess up so bad - no one knows that and judging by that performance, Real were always going to win.

One last thing - Liverpool deserved to be in the final because they got there. Real deserved to win because they won. That’s how sport works - meritocracy. It doesn’t require your approval to be so. Of course there are caveats that can make any defeat/win hurt or taste somewhat sour, but you make your own luck and when things go against you it’s up to you as individuals and a team to be mentally strong enough to deal with it.

I struggle to fathom how so many people can be so opinionated about things we can all see, again and again.

I love it when we don't understand something we just make up a answer. It's like religion all over again.

How is it that Real were completely outplayed by Bayern yet still managed to win? Well, I don't know, so I guess it must have been their collective will to win that repelled all Bayerns shots from their goal. It's the only logical explanation! Either that or football is simply a low scoring game with high variance, where the best team is often on the losing side, but that doesn't sound as appealing. Lets go with the 'mentally strong' ideology as I don't really understand this variance you speak of.

Why talk about teams being more deserving than others, making luck(how does one do that?), retroactively declaring that because something happened it must have been deserved(reminds me of Hoddle talking about disabled kids). Man City were denied 2 pens and a clear goal against Liverpool, is that because they didnt want it enough?

Knockout football is great because its an exciting spectacle. It creates fun moments, and sells lots of tv rights. But if we over-analyse it things get a bit messy.

So you mean Ramos held Salah’s right arm and brought him down so he can injure his left shoulder??

I think someone watches too many cartoons.

These tackles are common in football. Ramos refused to let go off the arm because Liverpool could have gone on to score. To make it seem as if the injury was the goal is rather naive!

Do quite fancy an e/w punt on Belgium (12/1) for the WC. But Martinez is such an average manager. Do the players really respect him?

If you put five pounds on at odds of 12/1 it means that you will lose five pounds.

          Ave a bang on that.

        A) Luis Suarez

And also, maybe, some things happened WAY before some people’s time.

Just because you might have been around and watching football in 00-01 and remember everything controversial that went on like it was yesterday doesn’t mean everyone else does.

Also, sometimes some players will react extraordinarily in extraordinary circumstances in a manner you’d say is out of character. But obviously one incident is just as bad as a litany of offences when judging someone’s character?

Right. Didn’t know so many people on here were so reactionary.

Ramos. Suarez is more feelings than cynical.

who the nasties player is, might spark a more conflicted debate.

Suarez has always been held accountable for his nastiness. Penalty awarded and a red card, ban for biting. Yes, Ghana didn’t score, but Suarez himself was held accountable. (I do not condone what he did, btw)

Ramos has gotten away with s**t year after year, recently the Salah and Cuadrado incidents. That makes him the bigger cheater in my opinion.

This is the case for me, but dont think its about allegiances the way you imply. Question was "most cynical cheater". Cynical implying knowing very well what your doing and being deliberate. That's why I rate Ramos way over Suarez, and probably would with a lot more players as well.

Suarez is all feelings and gets caught up in the moment and makes really poor judgements. He almost allways gets punished for it, and rarely gets away with any of his antics. Ramos is more clever. Even though hi record of collecting cards is impressive, one has to admit that he looks more "in controll" in his shady parts of the game, actually thinking and assessing and doing the things he does to help his team get some sort of leverage? Tha why he's a more "cynical cheater" than Suarez.

He isn't a 'win at all costs' manager. Six final defeats in a row now? Other managers would have been slaughtered if they were seen dancing and singing first thing in the morning after a defeat like that. Media darling Klopp however can do no wrong, in fact he's being lauded for celebrating a loss.

                Let’s be honest here.

Who would you rather work for... Mourinho or Klopp?

I’d love to work for him, he seems like a great guy (doesn’t seem like a guy who is different behind closed doors). Surely having him on your side is a great motivator and you’d want to do well for him.

Professionally I would want to play for the one that's most desperate to win things. Professional football is a result business. At the end of your career you're judged by what you won.

On a hobby basis I would want to play for the one that wouldn't mind dancing and singing after we've been relegated from our Sunday league. Because hobby football is supposed to be for the craic.

I think you may be a little biased from when you supported Man Utd. I'm a neutral in this case but Klopp is certainly no media darling. He gets credit for reaching a Champions League final, yes. Mourinho gets slated for spending insane levels of money and winning nothing of note - also true. But I don't think you can put that down to some sort of agenda.

I think he's probably the sort of bloke who will hold his hand up to any mistakes...but I doubt he'll ever change from his "we'll score one more goal that you" mentality.

Liverpool fans may have to learn to live with defensive averageness for a while to come.

Hard to hold onto a player who clearly wants to leave.

It’s no good for team morale holding onto players like that. It’s not like they didn’t get really good money for him either.

I have no idea if the money obtained from the sale was necessary, but it did go to good use in acquiring Van Dijk. Probably should have spent some of that money to also acquire a new creative player to challenge Oxlade-Chamberlain in case he was not up to par or got injured

Liverpool plays so poorly when Salah is not on the field despite having some quality players, imagine what’s it like for Egypt without Salah!
Glad and hopeful that he will make it to the WC.

Liverpool do at least still have Mane who's very effective and a very clever player in Firmino. I'm not as familiar with Egypt's setup but I do imagine they'll perform much better with him in there.

On December 8, 1963 Frankie Sinatra Jr., who was 19 at the time, was kidnapped by three men while staying at a hotel in Stateline, Nevada. The kidnappers demanded $240,000 and one important condition was that all communication should be conducted by payphone. Because during these conversations Frank Sinatra feared that he would run out of change, he always carried 10 dimes in his pocket throughout his life.

It was Franks son they kidnapped. I believe Frank Sr. paid the money but had the FBI involved. One of the kidnappers let Franks Son go during the pay off I think and the FBI busted them. something like that.

GSW would take it 4-0. Celtics are awful on the road.
And without Irving and Hayward, GSW would sweep them.

The PL is struggling to sell them. The worse thing for the fans would be another broadcaster getting them as that would mean people having to pay 3 subscriptions to watch all games.

Really pathetic of those people and there's no place in football for that

People forget that in the end footballers are human too and never deserve death threats of any kind no matter how poorly they play in a game

That is a disgrace, the poor lad must be going through enough without trying to deal with the likes of that.

These idiots should be directing their anger towards the person who put an inexperienced young lad like him between the sticks on such a big stage.
