World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Iran

Making their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance this summer, Iran face an uphill task if they are to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

Iran, who were the third team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after hosts Russia and CONMEBOL winners Brazil, kick off their Group B campaign against Morocco in Saint Petersburg on Friday June 15.

A daunting encounter with Spain in Kazan follows five days later, before Iran round off their group campaign on Monday June 25 by taking on Portugal in Saransk.

Road to Qualification

Iran breezed through the second round of AFC qualifying, remaining unbeaten in their five-team group that also included Oman, Turkmenistan, Guam and India. Carlos Queiroz’s side recorded 6-0 wins in their home and away ties with Guam, scoring a total of 26 goals in their eight group fixtures and conceding only three.

The third and final round of qualification in Asia proved just as straightforward, with Iran undefeated in their ten group matches. Injury-time goals from Reza Ghoochannejhad and Alireza Jahanbakhsh in their opening-day 2-0 win over Qatar set Iran on their way, before the challenges of China, Uzbekistan, Syria and South Korea gradually fell away.

Qualification was assured with two matches to spare, following a 2-0 home win over Uzbekistan. The 2-2 final-day draw with Syria was the only fixture in which Iran failed to keep a clean sheet.

Ten goals in as many matches represented a modest goalscoring return, with three of Iran’s fixtures ending goalless.

AFC World Cup Qualifying Third Round
Most starts: Alireza Beiranvand, Saeid Ezatolahi, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Morteza Pouraliganji, Milad Mohammadi (9), Ramin Rezaeian (8), Mehdi Taremi (7), Ehsan Hajsafi, Sardar Azmoun (6), Ashkan Dejagah (5), Pejman Montazeri, Vahid Amiri, Masoud Shojaei (4)

Most goals: Sardar Azmoun (4), Mehdi Taremi (3), Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Reza Ghoochannejhad (1)

Most assists: Masoud Shojaei (2), Ramin Rezaeian, Mehdi Taremi, Sardar Azmoun, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Karim Ansarifard (1)

Since qualifying, Iran have won six of their nine friendlies: a draw with World Cup hosts Russia and away defeats to Tunisia and Turkey the only blemishes on a run of victories over admittedly limited opposition in Togo, Venezuela, Panama, Sierra Leone, Algeria and Uzbekistan.

The Key Targets

With 23 international goals in 31 appearances, Sardar Azmoun (£6.1m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is Iran’s main threat in attack and was their top goalscorer in qualifying (11 goals across two rounds).

Dominant in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet, the Rubin Kazan striker will be the spearhead of the Iranian attack in a 4-2-3-1 or in Queiroz’s favoured 4-3-3 formation. The fact that Azmoun has yet to hit double figures in a single league season is some cause for concern, as is Iran’s unexceptional goalscoring record in qualifying: five teams outscored Iran in the third round of AFC qualification.

With a total of eight goals in qualifying, Mehdi Taremi (£5.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a marginally cheaper forward option, albeit an inconsistent one. Taremi will likely play on the opposite flank to Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.0m on Fantasy iTeam | £7.0m on McDonald’s FIFA), the exciting AZ winger/forward who finished as top goalscorer on 21 goals in this season’s Eredivisie. Jahanbakhsh also supplied 12 assists for the Dutch club in 2017/18.

Iran’s strength in qualification was not, in fact, their attack, but rather their solid defence. Featuring in all-but-one of their third-round fixtures, Morteza Pouraliganji (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) is a safe bet to start at centre-half. The tough, no-nonsense defender is also a considerable aerial threat from set-pieces, having scored an impressive ten goals in 49 appearances for Qatari club Al Sadd.

The Long Shots

Nottingham Forest fans may just about recognise Ashkan Dejagah (£5.5m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), who played all of 14 minutes for the Championship club after signing on a short-term deal in January. The main concerns around Dejagah surround his fitness, having played a grand total of 128 minutes in his last two seasons at club level.

Should he feature, the former Fulham attacking midfielder offers assist potential from set pieces and will also likely be on spot-kick duties, having scored penalties in qualifying and in Iran’s recent friendlies – including the consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat to Turkey on 28 May.

With goalkeepers receiving a point for every two saves made on Fantasy iTeam’s World Cup competition, Alireza Beiranvand (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) could quickly rack up a tidy score in Iran’s matches against Spain and Portugal. Beiranvand is also famed for his long throws and offers the unlikeliest of assist possibilities: his astonishing 70-yard throw led to a goal in Naft Tehran’s 2-1 victory over Tractor Sazi in November 2014.

Areas to Avoid

Nicknamed the “Persian Pogba”, 21-year-old midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi (£5.4m on Fantasy iTeam| £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) is tipped for great things – but also suspended for Iran’s opening group match against Morocco, which surely represents Iran’s best chance of what would only be their second victory in a World Cup fixture.

While Beiranvand has the compensatory save points to fall back on in intimidating-looking fixtures against Spain and Portugal, there is no such safety net for the defenders in front of him.

Rouzbeh Chesmi (£4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), listed as a £5.3m midfielder on Fantasy iTeam, started Iran’s away friendly in Turkey alongside Pouraliganji and looked suspect as Cenk Tosun scored twice for the hosts. The second centre-back position appears to be a weakness, with 34-year-old Pejman Montazeri (£5.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £4.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) another unconvincing option in that role. Veteran centre-half Jalal Hosseini was surprisingly omitted from Queiroz’s preliminary 24-man squad.

In case anyone is actually here. Thoughts on Ronaldo and Messi in the Telegraph wc game? To me they seem expensive and Messi’s group is pretty tough while Portugal isn’t the highest scoring team ever. However, we all know that they could easily score a hat trick at any given time.

    1. Cheeseoid
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I wouldn't be starting with messi as he doesn't play until midway through wed. Although would may well transfer him in before then.

I think Spain v Portugal will be a low scoring affair. There is no real urgency to own Ronaldo at the start. Maybe for the second round of fixtures.

Cheers. Won’t start with either of them but am just trying to at least get a rough idea about what to do with my transfers. Right now I’m thinking that if I get them it would probably only be for their last game although I’m not sure if it would be better to have them for their other easier games

Maybe. The way I see it the squad is going to be pretty fluid with all the transfers you have at your disposal. If you aren't going to have them pretty close to the start I wouldn't worry about it right now. Inevitibly plans will change

Hopefully we will get a bit more of a clue regarding starting lineups before long. It is all such a grey area right now. There is also an argument for taking on more than the minimum defenders

In the Euros the defenders did the best in the group stage IIRC

Not mad for Messi, their group is pretty defensive and potentially good. But if Spain beat Portugal, then Ronaldo looks good v Morocco and Iran. Will wait with both.

Messi probably the better option of the two, but with the very high prices we normally see in these McDonalds games, I expect them to both be worth about 12m. So if I could get Lukaku and Cavani for 10m each instead of Messi and an 8m forward, that's probably what I'll do.

I think Morocco and Iran will both heavily park the bus and I question whether this Portugal side is strong enough to get more than 1/2 goals past them, whereas I think Lukaku for example could get 2/3 goals in either of his easier games

Its a different format for the Telegraph game. With so many transfers you can pick and choose. Portugal will need to win both games if they lost to Spain to go through. Heavy defending from semi-timers v a fired up Ronaldo is like running a tank over those buses.

About 4 hours ago I registered for McDonalds FIFA World Cup 2018 fantasy and created a auto-fill team but noticed there were loads of bugs - team selected was for Matchday 2 (not Matchday 1) and couldn't make transfers. They now seem to have taken it down and replaced with a 'Coming Soon' message.

    Anyone else find the same?

Apart from my team does seem to consist of a Big Mac, Chicken McNuugget and Bacon Double Cheeseburger.

        So maybe something is awry.

Yep. The Bacon Double is more closely associated with Burger King so it's likely to underperform in the McDonalds game. You could try a McFlurry if you want a punt.

That makes sense. There only seemed to be about four teams on there. Hopefully it will be up and running soon. Also, the rules were more similar to FPL rules than previous world cups where you got points for tackles, blocks etc

I think the hype around Keïta & Fekir is hilarious. If either of them end up as good as Pogba, Liverpool wil have done VERY well. Yet Pogba is generally ridiculed for being a waste of money. Funny old game.

Fabinho is literally like a Brazilian Phil Neville, it’s insane how a Brazilian sounding name generates so much hype.

I’m sure they won’t fail as such, but I just can’t see them dominating the premier league the way some folks seem to expect. They’ll probably be good solid 7/10 players... not world beaters

If rumours are true and Arnautovic goes to Utd it’s very frustrating for FPL.

However it does highlight how the “big clubs” are ruining football with players like Mahrez and Arnie potentially moving to be in a potential rotation situation.

Changes need to be made, but won’t be. For example Chelsea loaning out 50 players a year is beyond a joke. Look at Piazon if you wanna laugh. Or Michael Hector.

Jose's single tactic is to purchase established players, also ruining youth like Rashford & Martial

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

It’s a disgrace that with attacking talent like Sanchez Lukaku Martial, he has not got them scoring freely. Then you come to other massive talents like Rashford. He also hasn’t got the best out of Pogba, Shaw etc. I don’t rate José at all anymore, I think the game has moved on & left him behind.

Exactly. A club with money buys a player that becomes 'too good' for a club with less money.

Then that player has a chance to prove himself at a higher level, which is something the player wants.

we've lost a fair few young players that were just establishing themselves in 1st team to PL/Championship clubs. For not great transfer fees to clubs like Leicester & Swansea.
Get their wages at least quadrupled whilst they are dumped into the new clubs' U23s.
Does seem to be a scatter gun approach from many PL clubs - buy a load of players at around 1-1.5m. Dump them in U23s or back out on lower league loans. See what happens but if it doesn't work then try & flog them to a lower league side or just release them (buy 5 players that'll cost you 20m over 4 years if one pans out then you are breaking even at least with current transfer prices)

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

I believe football and FPL are heading for crashes generally. We should enjoy this last season or two before the whole house of cards comes tumbling down. I think we’ll either see a TV deal go bust, leaving a cash flow issue with clubs unable to pay wages/transfer feees etc, and/or the current FPL model will change so significantly that it just won’t be worth playing.

I really hope it doesn’t change any more than it has. But if you look at the creeping changes over the last 4-5 years, there’s bound to be more on the way. And with a 5m player base... how long before mr. Corporate FPL says hey we can make some dosh off this? As I say hopefully it doesnt

Yeah I don't want to pay for the game, even though 1 pound each would mean a huge payoff for the winner.

I don't think they'll ever charge though because of the gambling laws in various countries. Even as it is now they're making so much money off of it in terms of promotion of the game, community involvement, advertising.. I'm not too worried
