A fifth of World Cup Fantasy managers are hoping that Lionel Messi (£12.0m) will get his first points of the tournament against Croatia tonight.

The Barcelona man’s total score so far is zero after his Gameround 1 penalty was saved by Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson (£5.0m)

Despite that miss, Messi still sits in 21.8 percent of Fantasy squads. With him being the only Argentina player to find the net in their final six qualifiers, there seems to be no preferred cheaper alternative within their squad as far as Fantasy managers are concerned.

It was Sergio Aguero (£10.0m) who found the net in their opening match but he is owned by just 2.2 percent. Paolo Dybala (£8.0m), who is not assured of a start has more than the Manchester City man with 2.8.

There is still some interest in Argentina’s defence, even though they have just clean sheets in their last five matches, with a goal conceded tally of 11. Nicolas Otamendi (£6.0m) has 7.7 percent ownership while 4.5 percent opted for goalkeeper Willy Caballero (£5.0m).

There will also be some focus on Maximiliano Meza (£5.5m) who created more chances in Gameround 1 than any other midfielder (five).

However, the ownership figures tell us that more Fantasy managers are confident of a Croatia clean-sheet than an Argentina one. Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) is the most popular player in Zlatko Dalic’s squad, owned by 8.3 percent. That’s also more than the amount currently in possession of Otamendi.

Designated penalty-taker Luka Modric (£9.0m) sits in 7.1 percent of squads.

ARGENTINA XI (3-4-2-1): Caballero; Tagliafic, Otamendi, Mercado; Acuna, Perez, Mascherano, Salvio; Meza, Messi; Aguero.

CROATIA XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Strinic, Vida, Lovren, Vrsaljko; Brozovic, Rakitic; Rebic, Modric, Perisic; Mandzukic

I want to watch the tournament. Unlike us, there’s some good teams on display.

Might even start rooting for Ronaldo to win it all out of pure spite for how pathetic Messi and his friends have been

If Iceland beat Nigeria, then Croatia and Iceland will just play for a draw and then there is nothing Argentina can do.

    Rulli
    Bustos Mammana Conti Tagliafico
    Paredes Lo Celso

tbf Argentina wouldn't even be here if weren't for Messi. But he never really wanted to be here anyway and I think that's the big difference in this debate between him and Ronaldo. One wants to be here and one doesn't. It's juts as simple as that

    3. Rainer
      • 9 Years

Messi will be capable in 4 years time.

      If he's arsed!

  18. Dr Dream

    Not surprised Messi bombed again.

I'll stick with what I wrote a few nights ago. The difference between Messi and Ronaldo is that Messi is much more a team player and enjoys playing in a team that all play the Messi way at Barca. Very few players in world football play that way, or can play that way, and Argentina only have one...Aguero...The rest of them are just playing a different type of game.

Ronaldo on the other hand is far more of a one man machine.

The difference between the two types of player has been shown in spades in this WC.

      • 12 Years

I agree. The next 4 years for Messi are going to be a nightmare at Barca as well. Its only him, Bisquets and Pique left now from that Rijkaard/Pep. That team ethos they had is gone and he really has to be individualistic even more now

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Aye. Oddly the National team that has benefited the most from Messi is actually Spain. Their whole team has played the Messi way for many years now...and it's coming to an end...

It'll be interesting to see how long his influence on the Spanish style of play lasts...they haven't always played that way...

They just put Villa in Messi's spot and killed.

Spain are just lucky to have Iniesta and Xavi hybrids (Isco and Silva) to carry on with their possession approach. Its only upfront that they had to compromise really
