Four-goal Ronaldo meets World Cup’s best defence

The second of today’s World Cup last-16 ties kicks off at 7pm in Sochi, as Portugal take on Uruguay for a place in the quarter-finals.

For Fantasy managers, the fixture effectively boils down to Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m) versus the meanest side in the tournament so far.

Portugal’s captain has been selected by 32.5% of those who are playing McDonald’s FIFA – no forward has a higher ownership percentage.

Ronaldo is also the only Portuguese player whose ownership exceeds 10%, with Pepe (£6.0) and Rui Patricio (£6.0m) the next-most chosen assets from the 2016 European Championship winners.

After sailing through the group stage without conceding a single goal, Uruguay – and their defence in particular – have attracted plenty of Fantasy investment for this round of 16 tie.

Diego Godin‘s (£5.6m) ownership has soared to 27% and the Uruguayan captain is now the second-most owned defender in the McDonald’s FIFA game behind Marcelo.

There has been money too for Jose Gimenez (£5.7m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) as Fantasy managers back Uruguay to keep a fourth straight World Cup clean sheet and their seventh successive shut-out overall: the two-times World Cup winners have yet to concede a goal in 2018.

No side conceded fewer big chances than Uruguay (one) during the group stage.

Owners of Luis Suarez (£10.5m) and/or Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) have essentially got big-money differentials on their hands, as the Uruguayan strike pair are only owned by 6.2% and 5% of Fantasy managers respectively.

This match could be a set-piece square-off: all five of Uruguay’s 2018 World Cup goals have been scored from set-piece situations, while both sides have made a joint-high total of five attempts from direct free-kicks.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

They obviously aren't as they only made it this time due to Messi heroics. He's carried the country his whole career.

And you need defence to win the WC

AFA chose the wrong managers and Messi has been half the player he has been for his country compared to Barca.

Ota and Rojo play for huge clubs they aren't mugs

Rojo is rubbish and Ota is a wildman hardly a solid CB

Messi has a gold medal and a WC and 2 Copa runners up and 65 goals at 31. Not as glittering as for Barca but very few can top that

Messi is a flop at international tournaments. You can't say the defenders are crap when they have taken Argentina to 3 finals while Messi has few k/o stage goals.

His failure to score is why Argentina are out.

Tough call - I picked Eriksen over Modric so I guess I'd have to say Isco for tomorrow. Modric is a great player and on penalties of course but Isco will surely have more chances.

Cheers. Isco the clear winner on stats.

I have Griezmann and was considering sticking...only problem is that surely Lukaku will get a couple of goals against Japan?

Stick with Cavani? Or twist to Isco/Costa/Modric then Paulinho/Coutinho/Hazard? It’s maybe boring but I’m inclined to stick...

Guess I'll go against mytriggerhappyself and stick on Cavani after his brace despite having Isco, Lukaku & Kane as viable captaincy candidates!

2 played, one goal, no one knocked out. I'd say thats a fine start

This World Cup just keeps on giving. What a GREAT start to the knockouts.

Poor for me, really, considering I had captained Griezmann and it looked amazing after 20 mins! Rolling it on to Isco tomorrow.

Griezmann's freekick was so close. Could easily have been Griezmann owners rejoicing. Fair play to Mbappe owners tho. He's such a threat
