With Argentina, Portugal and Spain already falling by the wayside in the last 16, Fantasy managers will be hoping that Brazil can progress to the quarter-finals at the expense of Mexico in today’s 3pm kick-off.

Fantasy bosses receive only three free transfers before the next transfer deadline on Friday and, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Isco, Sergio Ramos and Diego Costa already surplus to requirements in our squads, an early exit for the Selecao would cause untold misery for those without a wildcard left to deploy.

Marcelo (£6.5m), previously the most-owned player in the McDonald’s FIFA game, starts on the bench for Brazil today after his early withdrawal in the group stage match against Serbia. The Real Madrid defender, who was jettisoned by over 220,000 managers ahead of the round of 16 deadline, is still owned by 31.6% of Fantasy bosses.

Marcelo’s crown as the most popular Fantasy asset in the McDonald’s FIFA game has been taken by Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m), who is included in 54.7% of our squads. No midfielder has scored more Fantasy points than Coutinho at this World Cup: the Barcelona playmaker has scored on two occasions and registered an assist in his three appearances to date.

Neymar (£12.0m) began the tournament as the most popular forward in the McDonald’s FIFA game, though his ownership has dipped from an initial 33% to just over 21% now. Should Brazil make it through today’s test against Mexico, Neymar can surely expect to amass more owners given that the other two players in the circa-£12.0m price bracket – Ronaldo and Messi – are already on their way home.

Thiago Silva (£6.1m), Allison (£6.0m) and Casemiro (£5.5m) are the other three Brazilian players with double-digit ownerships: the trio is owned by 21.6%, 13% and 12.7% of Fantasy managers respectively.

Not a single Mexico player is owned by over 10% of those who are playing McDonald’s FIFA, with Guillermo Ochoa (£5.1m) the most popular asset on show for El Tri (9.1% of Fantasy bosses own the Mexican goalkeeper).

Hirving Lozano (£8.0m) is Mexico’s most-selected outfielder, sitting in 2.4% of our squads.

Those with Brazilian assets in their teams should be confident of attacking returns this afternoon: Mexico allowed the opposition more shots on goal (58) than any other nation in the group stage.

None of the 12 teams left in the tournament has had more shots in the penalty area (34) than Brazil, meanwhile. Tite’s side has allowed the opposition only three shots on target in this World Cup, to highlight their defensive solidity.

Brazil XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Fagner, Silva, Miranda, Filipe; Paulinho, Casemiro, Coutinho; Willian, Gabriel Jesus, Neymar

Mexico XI (4-3-3): Ochoa; Martinez, Ayala, Salcedo, Gallardo; Marquez, Herrera, Guardado; Vela, Lozano, Hernandez

      Its a 'fantasy' assist.

MaccyD's don't do fantasy assists, same when an assist isn't given to a player who wins a score free kick.

Not many bar FPL do give em for that. It's FPL who have it all wrong. I think these have been pretty good with assists which helps make up for their app which is a joke

I sort of agree but that was a cross cum shot that ended in a goal. It LOOKED like an assist. Given by Telegraph.

Why does that matter? I chose Griezmann, Hazard and Lukaku over Neymar. And many Neymar owners captained Lukaku, so 6 points for 12m is poor

Agree , he’s threatened more each game but not quite delivered the monster haul though.
I think non owners are more lucky than clever that he hasn’t if you look at the stats and the chances he’s had

                Griezmann, Neymar, Kane

And now on switch dilemma I guess

    3. AndyCook
        7 years, 6 months ago

Odds on Neymar scoring were lower and people without WC would find it hard to get him in later, you can almost always argue a cheaper was better but it’s a game of odds nd multiple rounds. Next round Neymar will once again be better odds to score than Griezmann and many have used their wildcard. Also having Neymar does not stop you having Griezmann either.

I prefer the FPL assist rule too, but it is what it is I guess.

It's surprising that they use this version, they normally like to give people as much points as possible to keep them interested. Hence the chips. Although ironically I don't really like the chips.

The Thai attitude to health and safety is immense. Kid's drowned at a school I taught at a year before I arrived, (which is not unexpected given that most teachers and kids can't swim) so they decided not to go to the beach for a residential school trip whilst I was there.

Instead we went to the most powerful waterfall in the province, let a hundred kids get in at once, and then basically left me in charge of saving anyone in trouble, as well as letting me guide them back to camp, fat kids included, 3.5km mountain hike away, with no drinking water.

Then on the way back to school, we stopped at the beach for a swim.

The Assist system on FIFA fantasy is rank poor. That was clearly a Neymar assist that enabled Firmino to score.

Sometimes I do wonder about the 'brains' behind these games.

Pretty sure Ronald McDonald himself over sees the game when he's not looking after Jafooli on weekends.

Well, it was 'clear' by your definition, yeah. If you'd spent years playing a game with the McD's game's definition - that shots are not assists as they are not 100% intended to assist - then you would say it clearly isn't an assist. Swings n roundabouts 🙂

The only reason Neymar didn't get the assist is because Ochoa touched it. It was a pass.

I think it was a pass too, but I think the point is that in the Maccy D's game is that it isn't 'obvious'. It can be argued it was a shot. Whereas in FPL there would be no arguing.

Yeah I agree, but the game doesn't decide anything. They have to go by official statistics.

I thought it was a pretty clear attempt on goal tbh. The fact he took it early to beat the keeper rather than guiding it past him across the goal was a big clue. But of course I prefer the FPL rules, though adjustments would still be nice there too.

Just took another look. It's possible it was a cheeky shot, yes. Either way it doesn't matter since touch from an opponent automatically means no assist.

Prefer the FPL rules myself, but the UCL are the best out of three.

It's not the games fault. No assist was given officially.

Obviously we know why they didn't give the assist. lol But it couldn't have been scored without Neymar directly creating it. The FIFA game is marred by the lack of a 'common sense' assist rule.

Read my comment again, it's not the games fault.

From rules: Assists will be credited to a player on basis of the official statistics of a match as published on FIFA.com.
