Our Watchlist player rankings have been updated today, reflecting the forthcoming fixtures, current form and recent team selections. You’ll find these tables in your right sidebar on the frontpage.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that we’ve recently extended our season ticker to six fixtures and this has been reflected in the Watchlist – the next six opponents are now considered when putting these rankings together.

Joe Hart stays on the summit of the Goalkeeper rankings but only just. With three away fixtures in the next four and home games against Arsenal and United, he may need to rely on Save Points to fetch the returns. Newcastle’s Tim Krul offers a very viable and far cheaper alternative; with four home matches in the next six against Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham – the Newcastle stand-in looks to offer exceptional value going into November. Arsenal’s Lucasz Fabianski is a notable new entry, gate-crashing in fourth place in the rankings, the Pole may well be a short-term solution given that Manuel Almunia’s elbow is on the mend, but three “kind†home fixtures in the next four appears to offer strong value if you’re willing to trust a Gunners defence that’s likely to be without Thomas Vermaelen for the foreseeable.

John O’Shea benefits from the return of Rio Ferdinand and the solidity that this brings to Alex Ferguson’s rearguard – this has the Irishman climb to the top of our Defender rankings, surpassing Kolo Toure right now on fixtures with three home games in the next four Gameweeks. Everton’s Leighton Baines is the big climber – his fixtures improve slightly over the next six and he is already displaying form with two assists to his name so far. Newcastle’s Jose Enrique is a big climber just below the Everton left-back; more expensive than Mike Williamson and possibly more secure than the returning Danny Simpson, the Spaniard offers assist potential and a strong alternative to Krul in goal with four home matches in six. Notably climbers include Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz and Sunderland’s Elmohamady who we feel will start delivery attacking points to supplement Sunderland’s defensive returns, despite a harsh run of fixtures to come.

Yet again the Midfield rankings remain pretty steady at the top – United’s Nani and Chelsea’s Florent Malouda holding on to the top two spots, with Fulham’s Clint Dempsey maintaining his position in third thanks to his goal at Upton Park and decent fixtures to come. Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is the big climber and even pips the “bandwagonesque†Rafael Van der Vaart of Spurs. With three home games in four, I feel that Adam offers potential stronger returns over that period as Van der Vaart embarks on away games at Fulham, United and Bolton.

Up front there is also little movement at the top. Dimitar Berbatov’s shock relegation to the bench doesn’t shake my confidence in him ahead of some strong home fixtures, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie remains solid in fourth with some decent opponents to come. Andy Carroll holds firm despite being benched at City – I have confidence that he will return to the starting lineup and exploit Newcastle’s kind run of opponents that follow. Bolton’s Johan Elmander and Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh enjoy climbs with three attractive home games in four to come, despite the lack of form shown by Arsenal’s Moroccan striker.

As always there will be changes to the Watchlist as we near the next Gameweek deadline – Cesc Fabregas and Frank Lampard are almost certain to enter the rankings once we have confirmation of their expected returns. I’ll keep you posted on those and any other notable changes as and when they take place.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sorry posted on an older article!
    Team:
    Foster Krul
    Alex Konchesky Hughes Shawcross Jara
    Gerrard Malouda Bale Davies Barton
    Drogba Tevez Carroll
    1.2 in the bank

    A. Alex (out for 3 weeks), Bale => under 5 defender (Elmo?), Nani (plays WBA, hoping I haven’t missed the boat) 4 pt hit
    B. Gerrard => Fabregas

If I do A this week, I would just do B next GW.
***So essentially I’m asking is A worth the hit?

    Cheers!

      IMO, both are logical.

I'd do B as Alex should be OK for the game after. Fabs is essential so it's only a matter of time before you get him in regardless of what advice you ask or follow.

Depending on what price you got Alex & Bale at, A should depend on your instinct. What you should be asking yourself is:

Will Elmo & Nani score higher than Alex & Bale long term?

Good article, my one worry as an O'Shea owner is the form of Rafael, who offers a much greater attacking threat. O'Shea will play when the need the defensive stability but i worry SAF will play Rafael in the easier games, especially at home. Hope i'm wrong though!

I dont really get how Oshea can be top of the def watchlist when he may not start. Rafael, W Brown and GNev could all come in at RB and for my money are all far better players than Oshea.

O'Shea is defensively sound and can get forward a lot, Wes Brown is one of the famous examples where SAF f*kked up a potentially great player. Garry Neville is long past it, in fact, when he looks back he can't see it anymore.

As for Rafael? Who knows why he isn't playing, probably something to do with terrorists.

Rafael offers so much more, I think it will come down to nullifying the opposition.

A tall left sided mid will mean O'Shea plays, but if they have any sort of movement or pace, then Rafael hands down

      Like I mention here...
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/the-monthly-scout-picks/

I don't like to nominate more than one defender from a team unless I have good reason (out of position etc). I consider the United defence as a strong choice of the next four and O'Shea as their best option given his price. Obviously Vidic and Evra offer more security and possibly Bonus but I'm pretty confident that Ferguson will keep faith with O'Shea over Rafael, simply because a home tie with Bursaspor in the Champions League shouldn't warrant rotation and I feel that Ferguson is looking for a settled back four now that Ferdinand is back installed.

Alcaraz 4.4 - cheaper, better fixtures
Elmo 4.7 - better attacking potential, in a more consistent side

I don't like either if I'm honest at that price. There's so many good midfield options (Fabs, Malouda, VDV, Bale(?), Nani) which I think are essential. If I was going for a cheap midfielder I'd have to go with Ferguson or Albrighton.

VdV / Nani / Malouda / Fabregas, so its just a cheapie. Albrighton is a good shout, he seems to be playing regular

Evening all. I'm going to the pretty swish new Aviva stadium on Friday for Ireland v Russia. Wife visiting Sis in England...parents babysitting kids....boys night out...happy days. I haven't missed a home competitive international since 1986 so you think I would be more clued in on these "Johnny Foreigners". Pav is out injured and Arseshaving (tongue out, finger-to-lips, farmer-cheeks, fat face) will obviously play. Anyone have a clue who to look out for on the Russian team? Prospects/ dangermen/ potential weaknesses etc.? Bit off topic but thanks.

Akinfeev their keeper is highly rated. Alan Dzagoev and Pavel Pogrebnyak are both good on FM2009, and watch out for Ivan Drago - the man is a machine. 🙂

I don't play FM. Do play CM 01/02 however....you can update players etc. twice a season with a free download. I stick to that particular version cos playability is second to none.

It's a pretty sweet stadium..you'll enjoy it. But at one end, there's only room for about 30 or 40 people so it takes the gloss away from the stadium..well it did for me anyway! Be wary of Arshavin.

Stoke have that striker in Jones and Etherington is their Arteta.

He got 146 points last season, with nine assists. He already has five of them this season.

I'd be happy to have him back. He did ok with West Brom, got them promoted but was well naive with his tactics in the Premiership. More than good enough for the SPL though.

yeah spot on. made some decent transfer money into the bargain, how many hibs managers have taken a team to ibrox and pumped rangers like he did a couple of times.

Who to get relegated this season?

    18. Birmingham
    19. West Ham
    20. Wigan

    Looks reasonable to me.

I hate international breaks they just draaaaaag on. 2 free transfers this week. Thinking Bale to Fabs and Torres to 6.5m or below striker. This would leave me with Drogs and 2 cheapies up front which was never my plan at all. I was intending to ship out Cashley to accommodate Tevez but I just won't do that with his CS and assists flowing. Would leave me a front 8 of Fabs/Nani/Malouda/Davies/Petrov/Drogs/Carroll/?.
My basic question is; is 2 cheap forwards and expensive Def worth it to have a strong midfield? Thanks.

3-5-2 aint the worst way to go most weeks. If you get 2 cheap forwards who alternate well I certainly wouldn't try and put you off.
