FPL Question Time – Spending big in defence, end of forwards and Arsenal fixtures

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 3.

We may have one Gameweek 2 match left to play, with Crystal Palace hosting Liverpool in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

Not least that of how much money to spend in defence, how best to cover an unpredictable Manchester City attack and the upcoming good fixtures Arsenal are about to enjoy.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 3 Question Time:

Lee from FPL Family – One half of the popular married couple who play FPL together and run a YouTube channel.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Ben Crabtree – Winner of FPL in 2016/17.

QUESTION ONE – SIMON MARCH

Should we be giving up on forwards and putting that extra cash into having at least four premium wing-backs? I’m thinking of getting Robertson and Alonso to partner Mendy who I already own.

Simon: “After two weeks of watching the likes of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso marauding forward, getting goals and assists while also chipping in with the odd clean sheet, it’s pretty tempting to go big at the back.

“It’s hard to argue that, right now, 6-6.5m spent on a defender doesn’t yield better value than the same amount spent on a forward.

“However, one challenge is that while you can get decent value from a budget defender, you can currently get almost no value from a budget forward.

“If it takes a 4.5m forward to afford an additional 6m+ defender, that’s a big collective outlay on what is, effectively, one active player.

“It might improve your first eleven but it could also substantially reduce your squad’s strength in depth, increasing your exposure to rotation and reducing your ability to adapt to changes in fixtures and form.

“You could go without a premium forward but, as Aguero demonstrated on Sunday that this, in itself, can be a huge risk.

“A premium defence might be a viable strategy, but it has its trade-offs to take into account.

“Also, it only takes a week for things to change in FPL so I’d be wary of writing-off forwards this early in the season.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN CRABTREE

Given their run of fixtures I currently have three Man City attackers (Bernardo Silva, Sterling and Aguero) – is this too much given possible rotation and the cost of the investment overall?

Ben: “I see it as a necessity to have three Man City players so that if they turn it on, as it looks like they will often, you maximise your chance for a share of the points.

“It looks like the build-up to Pep Guardiola’s team sheet is destined to cause palpitations but the stress can be reduced with maximum coverage.

“Aguero, Sterling and Bernardo Silva is a lot of money and the value of the outstanding Mendy, probably one of the more secure starters, means you should prioritise him pretty much over all other transfers.

“Aguero has to stay in your squad. Sterling looks the most sensible to remove given his omission against Huddersfield and the extra expense.

“However, he will come back in the team at some point and does have the potential to be a great explosive differential compared to Bernardo Silva who looks more susceptible to small scores in big wins.

“The safe move is probably Sterling to Hazard and get Mendy as your third City player. The ‘in it to win it’ move would be keep Sterling and change Bernardo Silva to Mkhitaryan.

“Rotation is a huge problem for us and owning great players that are certain starters is ideal. One or two rotation risks is okay, but many more and every week you leave yourself open to a disaster week.

“I don’t like the idea of a strong squad of 15 to cover many risky players due to too much money on the bench. £4.5m defenders can come to the rescue with potentially 6 points entering the fray.

“Throw in an element of attacking capability and the ceiling points potential is higher than most 5.5m mids.”

QUESTION THREE – LEE FROM FPL FAMILY

Who are the best Arsenal players to fit into your side with their upcoming fixtures so good? It’s tricky with lots of other in-form options in the early Gameweeks. For me, the only spots that could be a straight swap are Pickford (for Cech/Leno) and Aguero (for Auba/Laca), as I don’t feel like ditching any of Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, Salah, Mane, Bernardo, Richarlison or Zaha. What would you do?

Lee: “I was not at all convinced by Arsenal defensively against either Man City or Chelsea. Emery is asking them to play out from the back and they just don’t have the personnel to do it right now – Cech in particular.

“In attack though, Aubameyang is class. He hasn’t shown it yet – but he will.

“If like many though, getting him in means losing Aguero, I would be sticking with the in-form City man.

“The one player who does look good for Arsenal so far is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. If you can fit him in among those other big names, get him in.

“Otherwise, keep a watching brief and potentially be prepared to switch out the more expensive Mané or Bernardo Silva if the Arsenal man shows some serious form.

I really want that Liverpool CS to be gone. Plenty of mini league rivals have their defensive assets while I'm playing Zaha.

Rough with the smooth is way more interesting than listening to their last gw recap. You are all happy you had Mendy and Richarlison and some of you are sad you didnt cap Aguero, no one cares. At least rough with the smooth you get a report of the extremes of the gameweek.

Smooth: Had captaincy on Mendy all week, switched to Kun on Thursday, didn't hear the JJ article on Friday and was busy Sat morning, else may have switched. Both my friends I want to beat this year switched from Kun to Salah on the back of the Guardian article.

Many talking about Hazard in this week, when he has yet to start and Sarri's post-match comment said he can't play 90 yet anyway:

"It's clear. He is a great player. But I think that, at this moment, he's not able to play for 90 minutes so yesterday I thought it was better to give him 25-30 minutes when the intensity of the match has come down. But I think, I hope, that in one week, maximum two weeks, he'll be able to play the whole game."

True but 40 mins means he has less chance to get the job done. I see your point, I'd just rather wait on him. If he is cleared and match fit I don't believe he is over priced, could have a banger of a season. One to watch for sure.

Not every transfer is done directly for the upcoming gameweek. He's showing he's in form and we know that he can get points even while we wait for his first full 90. More importantly no better option at that price point.

True but better options at the moment at a lower price point. I'm willing to wait for him to start one game and if he goes off for a hatty so be it.

"Can't play 90," doesn't mean he'll keep playing 20-30 minutes. Seems like there's no real reason he doesn't play 70ish or more minutes next week followed by a season of playing 90. Not sure the quote is as scary as you are making it out to be. If anything, I feel like Hazard's limited minutes is more about Sarri figuring out who to start between Pedro and Willian, and I feel like he's got his answer on that.

    Hi guys

Trying to raise £1.7m to bring in Richarlison. Routes I'm considering...

    A) VVD / Shaw / Cairney >>> TAA / 4.0 / Richarlison (for a -4 hit)
    B) B Silva >>> Richarlison (then upgrade defence or keeper)

At the moment, I'm 0.0 ITB with 2 FT:

    Patricio (Hamer)
    VVD / Shaw / Mendy (Wan-Bis / Peltier)
    Salah / Mane / B Silva / Neves / Cairney
    Aguero / Auba (Kamara)

    Thanks!

According to the game's own Q&A: "Once the season has started, player prices may change by £0.1m a day, based on activity in the transfer market.

Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors, and won’t be revealed to game players."

In previous seasons there has been a cap of 0.3 per gameweek, and it's assumed that this is true also for the 2018/19-season.

Mendy, Aguero and AWB are the only essentials so far for me due to their price/points return.

Robbo could be TAA quite easily.
Salah is so expensive and could be Mane/Firminho if they both keep pace with him.
Richarlison is easily droppable once fixtures turn.

I think the more sensible thing is not which players are essential, but which 3x Man City and 3x Liverpool assets are the best whilst maintaining some balance to your squad. I'd rather have Sterling than Bilva for example, but the price difference means Bilva enables other options. It might be more sensible in the long run to do Ederson, Mendy and Aguero as the Man City 3 as they're guaranteed game time.

It'll pan out, but so far, only three essentials have come to light.

He is on form. Willian was subbed and Pedro stayed on pitch. If he gets dropped, easy swap to Maddison for example.

I think he'll drop Willian for Hazard.

Why would he drop Willian? Thought Sarri said he loves Willian type player - hence they rejected 65mio from Barca

I get Perdro is on form etc, but sounds too short term to get him vs Maddison/Mkhi/Richarlison

OK - so similar to the guys who got Mahrez, Bailly, L.Moura etc.

Fair enough - no harm with a couple of short term punts. But many teams have 4-5.

I think Willian could get dropped next game, but I agree.

People thinking too short term with Pedro, he has very stiff competition and I would expect Willian to win the place over the course of the next few weeks / months. I think for now though, whilst Pedro is performing, Sarri will reward him with game time.

I'm staying well away. Prefer Mkhi / Rich, but Mkhi is another player that is far from nailed.

    Foster -- Patricio
    Mendy // Robbo // Shaw --- Awb // Peltier
    Salah // Rich // Mkhi // Sanchez --- Stephens
    Zaha // Kun // King

    A: Sanchez + King >> hazard + Ings/Wilson (-4)
    B: Sanchez + King >> Mane + Mitro/Wilson/Ings (-4)
C: Sanchez + King >> Pedro + Firmino (-4) I.e gives me both Chelsea and pool cover
D: get Alonso but either doing
    D1) Shaw/sanchez >> Alonso/Pedro and leave 2.4itb to upgrade King next week
D2) peltier/sanchez >> Alonso/Pedro and leave 1.4m itb. Will allow me to play 4-4-2 /343 at times but means a small benching headache (bench Shaw this week)

Mad to drop Salah on WC? Brighton game is the only one I'd he eating nails behind massive sofa.

    GW3 - Aguero/Mane/Auba
    GW4 - Aguero (NEW)
    GW5 - Aguero (FUL)
GW6 - Aguero (car) or Mane (SOU)
    GW7 - Aguero (BRI)

By GW9 when their tougher fixtures are done, I'd be have a some kind of plan to bring him back if needed with 2 FTs.

Yea you're probably right. Just thinking out loud here 🙂 think the risk would bee too big when the extra outlay you have left from Auba (11.0) doesn't improve team all that much. And when funds are spread all over the team, tough to have a easy way to get him back in.

        1. Pumpkinhead
          • 9 Years

This is why I started with him. I knew if he goes off having spread that cash around it would mean many transfers just to bring him in. If he repeats close to what he did last year + is a consistent captain option than he is worth the price.

100% correct. And yes, I am. Avoided 4 drops, got Alonso and Pedro in etc. Jumping early to 2x Chelsea and 1-2 Arsenal. I am well aware it's not ideal and might come back to haunt me 🙂

I feel too early for Hazard given Sarri's comments. But he would possibly be there for me as well if going without Salah. Sterling is way too big of a rotation risk for 11m when both Bilva and Dilva offer good options imo

Time for some reality check. Like I did with Laca( nobody remembers :D) at the beginning of the season. There is this strange belief that Mkhi is completely nailed. No he is not. Lets see how Arsenal line up against easier opposition, I will not be shocked if he is sacrificed in order for Laca to play.

If Lacazette and Auba both start then Ozil, Ramsey and Mkhi are competing for two spots so no he isn't completely nailed but after his performance against Chelsea he's got to be ahead of the others.
