Mané outscores Salah again as Liverpool penalty plot thickens

Fantasy Premier League midfielders Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sadio Mané (£9.8m) were both in the points again on Monday night as Liverpool won 2-0 at Crystal Palace.

However, there was disappointment for both of them in terms of the penalty-taking pecking order.

There was also a second successive clean sheet for the Reds as they continue to look like a team worth tripling-up on in 2018/19.

We’ve gone over the final match of Gameweek 2 to pick out the key Fantasy talking points.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-2 LIVERPOOL

Goals: James Milner (£5.5m), Sadio Mané (£9.8m)

Assists: Mohamed Salah x2 (£13.0m)

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Sadio Mané (£9.8m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) appear to be the three players required for the optimum Liverpool triple-up, all three of them picking up returns against Palace on Monday night.

Salah’s two assists ensured that he now has seven goal involvements in as many Premier League appearances. At Selhurst Park he was Liverpool’s chief goal threat firing off six shots. No FPL midfielder managed more than that in Gameweek 2, Chelsea’s Pedro (£6.5m) the only one level with him.

Meanwhile, Mané’s late strike, assisted by Salah, means he remains ahead of his Egyptian colleague both in goals scored and FPL points after Gameweek 2. The Senegalese international has found the net three times in 2018/19 to Salah’s once, and he leads him 26 to 17 on total FPL score. With 45 percent of Fantasy managers still giving the heavily priced Salah a wide-berth, Mané’s latest haul will certainly encourage the debate over whether he can cover the output of last season’s Golden Boot winner.

Salah’s shot count on the season is certainly hard to match, he has had 10 efforts on goal to Mané’s six. But the pair are equal when those shots are filtered to in the box (six) and whether they were on target (four). Throw in Mané’s advantage when it comes to bonus, he has five compared to Salah’s zero, and there really is an interesting case to argue that he is the better option. Obviously we will need more matches before coming to a conclusion on that, but Mané’s popularity will almost inevitably rise before a Gameweek 3 home meeting with Brighton.

Trailing away in the Liverpool coverage debate though, is striker Roberto Firmino (£9.5m). Another peripheral performance from the Brazilian sees him now way behind Salah and Mané. He has had just two shots in two matches so far, only one of those was in the penalty area and neither was on target.

However, the need for a third Liverpool attacker seems to have been completely dissipated by the strong performances of left-back Robertson anyway. He and Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) remain close in ownership (around the 17 to 18 percent mark), but the Scot has outperformed his defensive colleague so far, FPL-wise. He has one assist and three bonus points, while van Dijk no goal involvements and zero bonus. Furthermore, Robertson has created more chances and the former Southampton man is yet to register an attempt on goal, normally one of his specialities. That is not to take anything away from van Dijk’s stature as a player outside of FPL. He continues to be one of the main reasons why Liverpool are yet to concede a goal in 2018/19, having won all of his tackles on Monday night, accounting for nine of his team’s 13 succesful aerial duels, making eight clearances and doing all of that with 92.4 percent passing accuracy.

“No-one even thinks about the cost (of van Dijk) now, he is in this market, and he is worth it. It is not important for us.” – Jurgen Klopp

There still remains a case for the inclusion of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) who looks more assured as the first-choice right-back with each game. He was a regular attacking outlet for Liverpool on Monday night and supplied more crosses than any defender other than Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) in Gameweek 2. Given that he could save £1.0m compared to Robertson, he should continue to hold onto just under 20 percent ownership.

Another crucial talking-point from the match was that of the Liverpool penalty-taking situation. Mané was believed to be the favoured option for spot kicks after scoring two in pre-season while James Milner (£5.5m) netted one but missed another. However, it was the former England international who stepped up to take the penalty after Salah was fouled in the box, much to the disappointment of Mané’s 30 percent ownership. The Senegalese might still be in the frame considering that Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) has now returned to match action. He came on in the 66th minute in a straight swap for Milner, both in terms of position within the 4-3-3 and the captain’s armband. Therefore, Mané may become the penalty-taker if Henderson starts the next match at Milner’s expense – after all, Naby Keita (£7.5m) and Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m) have impressed in central midfield so far and look like they could keep their places. We certainly need a little more data before declaring outright who the Liverpool spot-kick taker is.

One thing we can be fairly confident on is that Salah is not going to be too involved with penalties this season. The fact that he was not considered for Monday’s spot-kick despite winning it is quite telling, especially as one of Mané’s pre-season penalties was also given after a foul on Salah.

For those heavily invested in Liverpool, they will be happy to know that, despite overseeing another win, another clean sheet and more goal involvements for his key players, manager Jurgen Klopp still believes there is room for improvement. If the Reds can make the changes the German is looking for, their players will continue to go from strength-to-strength as Fantasy assets.

“It is difficult to always deal with these situations, but I was happy defensively. I wanted more offensively, and the full-backs to be involved more. We still had three or four good situations, where we were perhaps a bit unlucky. It wasn’t a brilliant game for us. We won it because we scored in two very decisive moments. If we’re not brilliant we usually lose, but we didn’t this time. That’s unusual for us.” – Jurgen Klopp

It was a night of mixed emotions for the 22 percent ownership of Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m). He played well once again, showing defensive strength and, from his days as a winger, the ability to get forward too. To be able to own a player of his qualities in a team that should keep plenty of clean sheets this season for well under £4.5m is hugely exciting for Fantasy managers. However, Wan-Bissaka was caught out in the second-half by Salah’s breakaway run and, in fouling him, was sent off. He will now miss the Gameweek 3 trip to Watford but will return in Gameweek 4 when Southampton come to Selhurst Park. For that reason, it would make little sense to sell him for that period. Keeping him on the bench for one week should do little damage to Fantasy squads.

The starting berth of Gameweek 1 goal-scorer Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.5m) has now come under threat following Max Meyer’s (£6.0m) first appearance of the season. He came on for the former Leicester City in the second-half in a straight swap, which could suggest the German will become the first-choice there. At this stage it is hard to know whether or not Meyer will claim the left-midfield position as is own, simply because his pre-season with Palace was virtually non-existant. He played zero minutes in the friendly matches over the summer while Schlupp registered 352, and may still have a week or two left to make his case for staying in the starting line-up.

Finally, the vast majority of Fantasy managers should take some encouragement from the fact that both Liverpool and Crystal Palace named unchanged sides for this match. Yes, there may be some doubt over whether the Reds’ central midfielders or Schlupp can hold down their place, but both sides should be considered on the more settled side of the Premier League right now when it comes to team selection. Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) continues to operate as a centre-forward and there is has been no rotation of Klopp’s full-backs yet.  That is all good news considering how popular the assets of Liverpool and Palace have proven in the early part of the season.

CRYSTAL PALACE XI (4-4-2): Hennessey; van Aanholt, Sakho, Tomkins, Wan-Bissaka; Schlupp (Meyer 83’), McArthur, Milivojevic, Townsend (Ward 79’); Zaha, Benteke (Sørloth 70’).

LIVERPOOL XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Gomez, van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold; Milner (Henderson 66’), Wijnaldum, Keita (Lallana 87’); Mané, Firmino (Sturridge 90’), Salah.

Rough: Aguero (c) locked in all week and was unnerved by the rumours of him not starting so I captained Mendy. Happy with his 8 points but easily could have been 15-16 and clearly taking the armband off Kun was very irritating - lesson learned.
Elsewhere - loads of poor scores from Foster, King, Siggy, Zohore, Tomkins and a no-show from Sanchez.

Smooth: Mendy (8) captain worked out OK but really I needed that clean sheet. Aguero (20), Mane (10), Salah (9) and TAA (5) were my top scorers.

69 points overall... not too bad, pretty average.

Simply, no Aguero was absolute murder.

Shame really as the rest of my start to the season and most other player picks have been pretty good. One wrong decision though is all it takes to ruin your start, Aubemayang missing the easiest chance of the season didn't help my mood. It also didn't help that my sub keeper was the one responsible for gifting Aguero 2 of his goals either.

Oh and my other sub Wan Bissaka getting red carded for taking down my captain when 1 on 1 with the keeper wasn't great either, come to think of it.

      What a bunch of tossers.

Entertained replacing Ederson and PVA for Pickford (what a save v Saints!) and Mendy (must-have) for a four-point hit.
      Rough:
      - Two points down presently having not been tempted compared to if I had.
      - Mendy would have been locked into side early.
      - PVA blanking.
      Smooth:
      - Ederson assist/Mendy not going nuts reducing impact of not making change.
      - Another GW, other opportunities to discover alternative make-weights to facilitate Mendy move.
      - Retain PVA potential, afterall they had just played a tough Liverpool side, fixtures will become more favourable.

I dropped from 33k to 197k due to the following reasons:

      - No Aguero (went for 3 forwards 7.0 or below at the start of the season)
      - Peltier never played so didn't get Cardiff clean sheet. Wan-Bissaka, red carded, auto-subbed on with -2
      - Mahrez, my transfer in from KDB, benched and came on for a 1 point cameo, denying Mitrovic, who scored, being auto-subbed on with 6 points

      Smoothissimo!

My second successive century (104 followed by 110). Up to 198th overall, increased my lead over TM in Mods & Cons to 26 points, and all without the use of any chips.

I have finished in the top 4k on two occasions in the past but have never nailed my initial squad so well before and have never finished a game-week in the top thousand before either. :grinning:

My squad is mainly based on value, without trying to shoe-horn players into any predetermined formation or price structure. It has included 4 elite defenders (Mendy, Robertson, Alonso and Walker) from the start, and it also contains 3 big-hitters (Salah, Aguero and Mane). Six of these seven are in the Season Dream Team - shame about Walker being benched by Pep in GW2. So who needs bandwagons? - I've already got most of the best ones!

I saw that Guardian news and I don't know why I had second thoughts about Kun starting as it was logical for him to start, especially in 352 formation which was expected.

Spent 6 hours in switching between Kun and Eriksen captain, considered Mendy even, but not Salah. And in 4.30 am I gave the armband to Eriksen and went to sleep. I thought it will be easier for me to get over blank of someone who is nailed on than to get over Kun's 1 pointer.

Oh how I was wrong. Got 4 instead of 40 points and my rank is now 1.4m. Expected even bigger fall as I was ranked 900k in GW 1. Anyway, I am used to slow start, always have awful starts.

Sometimes it's actually better not to read this place. I had armband on Aguero and had no idea of the "rumours" and that's why I left it. When I heard the rumours it was too late to change it so ended up with 40 points..

Rough: Peltier dropped. Dithered and didn't put Aguero on captain, kept Salah. Salah clean through on goal, AWB hacks him down, red card - no Salah goal for captaincy, and AWB auto-subs on for Peltier.

Smooth: At least Salah got two assists and I have Aguero.

Smooth: Triple digit score second week running. Salah assisting Mané just put me on 100 points. Arnautovic and Agüero (C) paying off the pre-season planning after blanking in GW1. All players got something apart from Fabianski, Bernardo Silva and King.

      Rough :

      Rough:

      - No returns from Bernado Silva in a 6 goal romp for City.
      - No returns for Zaha or Aubameyang either.
      - Lacazette benched again. Mahrez benched. Both got only 1pt along with Patricio.
      - Mahrez appearing against Huddersfield (e.g. instead of Sterling) kept Hughes (8pts) on my bench.
      - Wan-Bissaka red carded, though thankfully my third sub.
      - Mendy captain feels rough given that he was extroadinarily close to: another assist, clean sheet and therefore 2 bonus points (with either one of these events). These things would have given a captain score of 34 to rival Aguero instead 16, which pales in comparison.
      - Lacazette's poor performance and price drop alongside Aguero's great performace and price rise has goaded me into selling my nest egg just as he was about to hatch. 🙁
      - 58pts this gameweek, and dropping further back from 590k to 1.16m OR.

      Smooth:

+ Double Liverpool clean sheet (VVD & TAA).
+ Mane's late goal and 2 bonus points.
      + Mkhitaryan's surprise 12 pointer.

Have you seen the fixtures though? He will at best match Hazards output in the same period of time. Chelsea got BRILLIANT fixtures, whereas Liverpool play Spurs away, Chelsea away and CIty at home in three out of the next four fixtures after this gameweek

Can't see how it can go wrong.

Salah delivers every game on average though, opposition irrelevant. Hazard has always been around 1 in 3 chance of scoring, which is why I think it can't be Hazard while his price is over 10

Good day. I have read a couple of different quotes from Sarri regarding Hazard's fitness, and his ability (or lack of, at this moment) to play 90 minutes. Some seems to say that he should be ready (at least to start) next week, and others emphasize that he's not ready for 90 minutes yet. Anyone who has decoded this in more understandable way than I have?

I went with Alisson over Mané as I wanted a quality home and away season-keeper-keeper. Regretting it at the moment as Ederson with his jammy assist is almost covering Alisson's points, but I still think that Salah will be the cream of the crop and worth the outlay, and Alisson could well become the top scoring keeper.

Both keepers are worse picks than their left back team mates and you probably want 2 attackers from those sides too, it’s why most went with rotating 4.5s, keepers are a waste of a pool/city spot

        You chose Alisson over Ederson?

The reason to pick Ederson is the lack of a reliable City defensive starter and expensive options. Much more steady Liv defenders to pick up in Robbo or TAA (cheap too!) It wasn't close. Should've gone Ederson.

For those of you agonizing over the Liverpool attack. Just remember last season the points were shared between all the Liverpool attackers. Just be patient. I reckon it's only a matter of time before Firmino starts scoring too.

Just a thought for those on Patricio (4 saves so far) seems like Wolves are dominating teams more and the other team doesn't have many shots on target for him to save, whereas keepers like hamer and fabri made 9/8 saves this weekend

Is it wiser to go for a 4.5 keeper with a team that concedes a lot of shots or one with occasional clean sheets?

Thanks for the point, very valid. I will go Hamer this weekend, got Patricio. Think Wolves have just been a bit nervous and they will come good in defence but right now it's a wait and see. If they continue to concede I will ship for Hennessey probably.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 3

Once again this year, we will have a champion representing the community to take on the Scout Picks every week with a chance to win a prize at the end of the season.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk by midday on Wednesday.

The champion will be selected at random at 17:00 on Wednesday and then asked to submit their XI by 10:00 on Friday.

This will require 11 picks, fitting into an 83m budget. There is no captain in the picks and the community champion must also stick to a designated FPL formation, and also must not include more than three players from a single team. Again, no chips or captaincy will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who has beaten the Scout Picks by the highest margin will receive a £100 Amazon voucher.

In the future, the weekly champion will be revealed in the midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline the Scout’s initial thinking around the choices. Our picks and the champion’s picks will be revealed, as usual, in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community champion fail to provide an appropriate squad, fitting the budget and formation constraints, an caretaker manager will be appointed to take control of the selection to represent the community for the gameweek in question.

Submit now if you’re interested for Gameweek 3!

      Good luck

That reasoning is why players fall so far behind the lead. Make your decisions based on the best available option given form and fixtures. Richarlison and Mkhitaryen are the best midfield mid-price options. Get them.

Both arguments are logically flawed. If a player is playing well he's more likely to continue than stop. It's not as if he's a grasshopper with a finite number of jumps in him. If your team structure allows it, and you can afford him, then he's probably still the best option in that price range. Forget what his starting price was.

hard to say without looking at your entire team. Not B for sure. Pogba has done nothing except score two penalties and shoot from distance (which led to nothing). Man U aren't going to get a penalty every match.

          Hamer / Patricio
          Mendy / Robertson / Baily / AWB / Peltier
          Mane / Eriksen / Pedro / Richarlison / BSilva
          Kun / Aubameyang / Kamara

          0 ITB, 0 FT

Pogba looks like United's key figure. Still, his returns were lucky penalties

I have 4 maybe 5 players I want to get rid of and have only 2FTs, which is why I need your help in prioritizing the moves. Have only 0.5 itb

      a) Cedric->Alonso/Shaw (need funds)
      b) Mahrez-> Mane (Would need to get Firm out first)
      c) Firm -> Kamara/Ings
      d) Lennon-> Mkhi (need funds)
      e) Other

I can do c and another transfer this week, but which one? This is assuming I'd switch to 442 from 343. Any other ideas/help appreciated. Cheers

Get rid of Shaw or Schlupp? Bringing in Monreal with their kind run of fixtures and him back in the team. Will be Robertson/Mendy/Monreal and one of Shaw/Schlupp.

Man Utd look so bad atm, seen both games and they have allowed Leicester/Brighton to have the ball, they invite teams to attack them and look vulnerable. It's Man Utd though, they are going to get clean sheets, typically they will turn up and beat spurs 2-0. Shaw doesn't have the same effect as Mendy/Robertson going forward, doesnt play with freedom and looks a little hesitant of going into the final third(under a diff manager I think he would love to bomb on constantly).

Schlupp playing left mid, only 4.5, Palace good run of games, can grab a goal/assist/clean sheet. Only worry is if Max Meyer(not 100% sure his position) gets match fit do they put him or Zaha out left instead of Schlupp?
