FPL Question Time – Hazard vs Liverpool options and Champions League rotation

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 6 preparation.

Key subjects such as how to get Eden Hazard (£10.8m) into our squads, whether a double-up on Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sadio Mané (£10.0m) is still viable, and Champions League rotation are all touched on this week.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 6 Question Time:

Chief #FPL Manager – This man has finished inside the top one percent six times in his career as a Fantasy manager and is one of the biggest influencers in the FPL Twitter-sphere

Lee from FPL Family – One half of the popular married couple who play FPL together and run a YouTube channel.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Question 1 – Chief FPL Manager

Having missed Hazard’s points the last two Gameweeks, is he worth missing another week due to my Salah and Mané double up against Southampton or do I drop one of them for the Chelsea man?

“I was fortunate enough to acquire Hazard during the international break, courtesy of my wildcard. I considered the Mané and Salah ‘double up’ as a serious option, but simply couldn’t ignore Hazard in part after watching his scintillating performances during the World Cup, along with his proven FPL pedigree.

“I also experimented with the possibility of having Mane, Salah and Hazard in one team (along with Alonso and Aguero) but it would have unbalanced and decimated the rest of my squad.

“Instead, I opted for Hazard and Salah, despite the Egyptian costing more than Mane. This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I took into account their ownership levels and concluded that it’s easier to switch from Salah to Mane if needed, rather than the other way around.

“Crucially, to his benefit, Hazard was given sufficient rest in the first two Gameweeks. But more importantly, I think he will feature far less in Chelsea’s Europa league matches than Liverpool’s reliance on Mane and Salah to top their Champions’ League games, which makes Hazard a must-have in FPL.

“Get Hazard in sooner rather than later even if it means selling one of your premium Liverpool assets. It may be worth considering this as early as Gameweek 6 in case Hazard’s price rises again.”

Question 2 – FPL Family

Aguero is doubtful and with Champions League football could be susceptible to rotation by Pep. Is Lukaku the best alternative?

“First things first, the Aguero heel injury doesn’t look too bad and he shouldn’t miss too many minutes through injury. In terms of rotation though, we could well see a reduction in minutes around the Champions League.

“But having watched Aguero so far this year, as well as hearing his manager’s recent comments on his form, I firmly believe he’s their main man this year.

“There’s no doubt that Pep and City will be going all out for the Champions League this year though, so if rotation is a concern, then you are right to consider Lukaku as a viable alternative.

“With four goals to Aguero’s three, Lukaku already has a higher goal involvement rate than the Argentinian – and a higher conversion rate (26.7% to Aguero’s 12%).

“Aguero’s creativity can’t be ignored though. He creates a chance twice as often as the Manchester United man – every 32 minutes to Lukaku’s 64. As a result, he also dominates the Bonus Points, with excellent underlying BPS when compared to the Belgian.

“My advice: stick with Aguero. If you simply HAVE to transfer him out though, then look at Lukaku. However, also consider the value in the lower price brackets. Zaha is back and winning games for Palace, Wilson’s looked incredibly lively in a Bournemouth side with great upcoming fixtures and Arnautovic turned on the style against Everton in Gameweek 5.

“Given the clamour for premium midfielders such as Sterling, Hazard and Mané, the sale of Aguero for one of the budget strikers, should surely only happen if you’re looking to bring in one of the heavy hitters in that position.”

Question 3 – Simon March

Whether Ben Mendy was rotated or injured, at what point (or how many players) does any absence due to rotation become unacceptable for premium players?

“It’s not a new problem but rotation feels like it’s becoming a bigger one. The best teams now have so many options in their squads, rotation is practically inevitable. In FPL, it seems like an added premium we pay for owning players from the biggest teams.

“How much rotation is too much, I think, depends partly on the position. Benched premium defenders can be frustrating and defender cameos are the worst. Overreacting and ditching players we’ll want in the long term is unlikely to be the answer, but frequently-rotated premium defenders probably aren’t worth holding on to either.

“I’m not sure the same applies to premium attacking players though. For example; because of how Man City play, Aguero might get as many chances in a 30-minute cameo as most strikers will in a full match. Assessing players by the number of opportunities they get to score, rather than by the number of the minutes they play, might be the way forward in a world that won’t stop rotating.

“It’s hard to predict who will get dropped but we know when players are most likely to be rotated; during periods of heavy fixture congestion, especially any involving Champions League football. Having a decent bench and selecting a sensible vice-captain become ever more important tactics during these phases.”

Who do you think scores more this week

    Hennessy Begovic
    Robertson D.Silva
    Maddison Walcott
    Salah (C) Mane
    Zaha Wilson

Team 2 could captain Aguero, Mane or Hazard.

    Thanks

Thinking of a Mendy and an uber cheap backline (Wolves WBs, Duffy and AWB)...

Allows Aguero/Salah/Haz/Mane/Fraser and two 7 million strikers (take your pick they are all firing)...

Can get there with 4 transfers.

    Thoughts?

The real worry is probably rotation of the big boys leaving thin cover (I would also go an 8.5 GK setup and Billing) and if Fraser gets crocked again he is not easy to replace...

Rotation of the premium defenders is one of the reason. Those cheapies doesn't have any continental match at least. I'll take one odd week on the chin when the autosub hit me

Its hard as Im dropping Alonso to get the cash in. Currently:

        8.5
        Alonso Mendy Doherty AWB Duffy
        Salah Mane Mhki Pedro Billing
        Kun Zaha King

So gutted I chucked Fraser last week or I'm virtually there.
Having Alonso and Hol a bit too much of a stretch but you may have decent SV.

..and that's the game in a nutshell!

Hazard (and the comments of his manager of him attacking even more) has caused the rethink for me...

Could always look at Ings/Jiminez and a 442 if you fancy the better defender...

According to L’Equipe back in 2015-16, just after Jurgen Klopp took charge at Anfield, he was offered the chance to sign Mbappé for just €300k but he was unable to provide the guanratees that Monaco was able to him and his family.

They also reveal in 2017 Mbappe and his family met with Klopp a few times and were sold under his vision but the numbers being thrown about by PSG for his services folded the oppportunity.

Last season they're were no options sub 7m. Wilson trolled, Gabbi trolled. Murray/Wood turned out ok. This season yes, I feel there's an abundance. Mitro, Wilson, Deeney, Ings, Jiminez, Zaha, Arnie. Giroud at 7.8m is also a good option.

Mid priced midfielders, Meh, same as usual I feel

In general, do you think it's a wise strategy not to double up on an average team's attack. Bournemouth for example, if you owned Fraser, would it be better to get Mitro over Wilson to avoid the attacking double up? TIA

Nope. The gaps should be filled with the same number.

The only difference I'm aware of between having players belonging to the same or different teams are:

              - Players from different teams can be rotated
              - The probability of both players getting the same baps (e.g. 3pts) is lower if the players are from the same team, but the probability of each player individually getting any baps (3, 2 or 1) remains the same whether they are from the same team or not. [In other words, this difference doesn't matter; the idea that baps are "shared" is a fallacy imo]

I prefer to look individually to be honest, even if it means tripling up, its fine

I have Fraser and King at the moment. If I feel that Wilson will be better replacement for Tosun, I'll go for him.

With average attack or bottom half teams, we dont really keep them for long, its likely to be for 3-5 weeks and then get rid, so not a big deal..

This is a conundrum. Normally it would be easy to avoid the double up especially with mitrovic and zaha scoring but Bou are scoring for fun at the minute. I am torn. I own fraser and looking ro replace Arnie and king is winning the race for me over mitro. I have aguero and firmino and neither are making way for him either. Any feedback appreciated.

Struggling to decide which 2 of those on WC, Wilson, Mitrovic, Jimenez,Ings...What do you think?
If Aguero no fit then maybe 3 of them and very heavy midfield?

      Wilson and Mitro I think

If you can make some reasonable upgrade with Wilson/Mitro to Jimenez cash, then Jimenez

Just lost my lead at the top of my mini league.

    Should I wildcard??

    Fab
    Robertson - Mendy - Pereia - Alonso
    Richarlison - Salah - Mané - Fraser
    Agüero - Zaha

    Bench: Foster - Kamara - Neves - Wan-Bissaka

Obviously not. But you need Hazard, and I'd probably downgrade a defender and upgrade Mane to achieve it.

Trying to Fit Hazard into this squad:

    GK: Ederson, Pickford
DEF: Mendy, Azpi, Boly, Shaw, Davies
MID: Salah, Maddison, Neves, Ramsey, Fraser
    FWD: Wilson, Ings, Aguero

    Would you rather:
    1) take -4 Ramsey, Azpi (or Mendy) for Hazard, Wan-Bissaka
    2) take -4 Neves, Aguero for Hazard, Zaha
    3) take -8 Neves, Ings, Aguero for Hazard, Jimenez, Mitrovic
    4) take -8 Shaw, Maddison, Aguero for Hazard, Wan-Bissaka, Vardy
    5) None of the above

Yep, thought about Hamer but I don't have enough banked not to still need to drop 2 outfield players to accommodate

Would look something like -8 for Pickford, Maddison, Ramsey out for Hamer, Hazard, Seri

you think that would be a better option than the others?

I know how the majority on here react unkindly to using chips so early in the season. Though a possible theory could be using a free hit this weekend.
My personal feeling is City, Liverpool and Spurs will play their big guns tonight and tomorrow (I think that goes without saying) and potentially rest them at weekend.

If Aguero is deemed fit for the Lyon game, which it sounds like he, and Mendy will both be available according to Arteta, then I see Pep playing Jesus instead of him for an away fixture to Cardiff.

I think Kane 100% needs a rest. I read a stat which stated in the Liverpool fixture last season he made close to 50 sprints in the game, last weekend I think it was nearer to 10. He will play tonight I'm sure, but away to Brighton, we may see Son take his place, or maybe even Llorente.

I think even if Salah scores a few goals tonight against PSG, he would still potentially be rested in the home tie to Southampton. The risk on captaining any of the above to me is high risk (potentially high reward) but it's a bigger gamble than in previous weeks.

I own Aguero, Mendy and Salah out of the above and unless they don't feature in the CL, I have massive doubts over minutes come weekend.

If someone was coy enough to play their free hit this weekend, having Hazard as captain, and remaining players (or the majority) from non CL teams, I think it could pay off. The free hit chip isn't easy to get right and we will all be saving BB and TC for the double gameweeks.

    Just food for thought people...?

I don’t think Aguero and Mendy will play tonight. Not sure if advantage to be gained from fh is worth it this week given we’re certain to have at least two blank gws for most of the big 6.

The Free Hit is easy to use in a blank gw. Also good in a double. I think you should save them for later. Lots of stories from last season where FH in a sgw left people with less points than their original team would have scored.

I actually used my free hit chip to good advantage on a single game week but most of my season was dire from February onwards trying to get a team prepared for dgw- blank- dgw.It meant I had to bring in and keep underperforming players in the spring.Believe me even if you do well
in a single week you’ll lose the points and more over the rest of the season.

My experience as well. Got about 40 over my original team in a sgw, and was happy at the time. Struggled over the blanks/dgws.

I agree with you here mate. An inner maverick in me tries to be a little different from what I'm supposed to do which can lead to failure. I will no doubt save my TC and BB for doubles. I did plan and scored well with the blanks last season though it's not to say the top 4 or 6 will go all the way in the english cups. It's just what we expect to happen

I played my FH early season for a week that looked great for players I didn't own and poor for the ones I did. It was a poor week all round and I really regretted it by the time the blanks came around. Fwiw I don't see any of the big guns being rested this early, especially with Liverpool wanting to maintain their great start and City not wanting to fall further behind.

      I just don't see it.

Bare in mind there are Carabao Cup matches next midweek. Surely the big boys will be rested for those games so no need to rest them at the weekend as well. I think Jesus plays against Lyon and in the cup, Aguero plays against Cardiff. Spurs simply can't afford to rest Kane after losing two in a row in the league.

I've no doubt the big boys will be rested for the Rumbelows Cup. My main doubt is if they all play a tough 90 mins in the CL this week, their minutes would be managed this weekend no matter what. I'm not trying to convince anyone to hit the chip, nor myself. It was just food for thought and if anything, thinking out loud. Cheers mate

Rather let my bench take up the slack on weeks with potential rests, that's what it's there for. Would hate to be jammed up on a blank game week with a potential bulk of my team not playing and no free hit chip imo.

I hear you. It has put me off captaining Aguero or Salah for now though. I planned for the blanks well last time and got my highest scoring gameweek without the FH. But I myself did waste the chip early last season

Rotation is a subject that does seem to get blown up a little bit on this site. As WR says it's still early season and as Member says there is the EFL cup next week which will surely be used for rests.

I'vemanaged to convince myself that Klopp will rest Mane at the weekend, but I also think that depends on Firmino's fitness. Nobody but nobody is playing for either side in the League Cup, though. Especially Liverpool, with ther next two league fixtures. If Mane gets 90mins in the EL, I may een ship him out.

    Patricio.
    Mendy, Alonso, Robertson, Wan-Bissaka.
    Mane, Walcott, Salah, Bilva.
    Aguero, Mitrovic.
    Foster, Ings, Peltier, CHO.
2 ft, 0.3m in the bank. WC at the ready.

    Thinking one of these.
    1. Wally-> Rich and save other FT.
    2. Wally/ Mane-> Haz/Fraser.
    3. Wally/ Bilva-> Moura/Maddison (short term picks before WC).

Some. Had him since gw2. Expensive differential. Nervous ahead of every City lineup posted on their Twitter account. Will never captain (again) most likely. Poor value if not captained and his potential hauls won’t hurt non owners at 2.8% ownership.

I'm getting increasingly interested in him as an option, watched the highlights of the City match a couple of times and really like his positioning (albeit it's a small sample of the match). I am contemplating a cheap forward line and investing heavily in midfield with a double up on Dilva and Sterling.
