Manchester United equalled their worst-ever start to a Premier League season as they were beaten by West Ham on Saturday.

The defeat at the London Stadium was their third of the campaign and will go a long way to discouraging investing in their Fantasy Premier League assets.

In this latest Scout Notes article, we’ve got all the FPL talking points from the opening match of Gameweek 7.

West Ham United 3-1 Manchester United

Goals: Felipe Anderson (£6.8m), Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) | Marcus Rashford (£6.7m)

Own Goals: Victor Lindelöf (£4.9m)

Assists: Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) | Luke Shaw (£5.1m)

Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) registered his fifth attacking return in six matches as he scored in West Ham’s 3-1 win over Manchester United. The Austrian forward returned to the starting line-up after injury ruled him out of Gameweek 6. His FPL returns on Saturday lunch-time only further complicate the debate over which of the cheaper strikers are worth owning. Remember that this was supposed to be the season where the so-called ‘third striker’ had sadly passed away. We are faced with a plethora of options already in 2018/19.

Interestingly, Arnautovic only actually had two shots in the match and took on a slightly deeper role than usual. In fact, it was his distribution that caused Man United so many problems at the London Stadium, rather than his goal threat. No forward completed more successful passes in the final third than him in Gameweek 7, at time of writing. That bodes well for his prospects long-term as it suggests the potential for multiple points-scoring avenues. With West Ham’s fixtures soon to turn around, the case for his inclusion could be strong.

Felipe Anderson (£6.8m) also looked good once again, scoring the opening goal for the Hammers. While Arnautovic is the clear and obvious choice in West Ham’s attack he is slightly cheaper and has been taking up equally dangerous positions. Furthermore, he is on set pieces for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. While Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.9m) may not look like much of a Fantasy asset, this win over United showed that the Hammers’ attack is getting into a groove and could well be trusted with investment in the coming weeks.

The fact that West Ham have taken four points from matches against Chelsea and Manchester United, and conceded just once is also encouraging. The Hammers are still allowing a fair number of shots, but holding two attacking sides at bay should be to their credit. Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) continues to be the favourite from their defensive options but Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) has put himself forward for anyone looking for budget options. He seems to have nailed down a starting spot in recent weeks, having completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks and registered an assist for Anderson’s goal too.

“We spent some money but we are not going to win the league but the big change was our decision to keep doing exactly the same thing. In the first four games, we were not assembled as a team. We are improving and the results are coming now.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester United, on the other hand, looked a shadow of the side that warranted Fantasy investment just two weeks ago. They offered little in the first-half as Jose Mourinho opted for a 3-5-2 formation. United looked flat and uncomfortable with the system while Romelu Lukaku (£11.1m) was the only player to show any drive or urgency. Paul Pogba (£8.2m) started the match after a week of reported friction between himself and the manager but did not play particularly well.

Anthony Martial lined up as a striker alongside Lukaku, but it was a pairing that did not quite work. At the back, Scott McTominay was named in a three-man defence alongside Chris Smalling (£5.8m) and Victor Lindelof (£4.9m). Luke Shaw (£5.1m) started for the second week in succession, with Ashley Young (£5.8m) used at right-back, wearing the captain’s armband. That was because Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) was left out of the matchday squad altogether. Alexis Sánchez (£10.1m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.8m) were afforded similar treatment.

“I want to play [Anthony] Martial. Something that you are asking for a long, long, long time to play Martial, I left Alexis [Sanchez] out, and I think that Martial is not a player very, very, very focused on his defensive duties. And to play him as a second striker and trying just to cover the area of [Declan] Rice would be much easier for him.” – Jose Mourinho

“And at the same time I felt we needed quality on the ball on the building up from the back and Scott McTominay has that quality with the ball. Everything that left his foot was correct, was accurate, the passes to Ashley Young on the right, the passes to Matic, the passes to the striker, everything was accurate from him. A part of a special character, a special personality, that a team in a negative moment needs this kind of mentality like Scott McTominay has.” – Jose Mourinho

Mourinho did make a change in the 56th minute which introduced some impetus and pace into their game. He brought Marcus Rashford (£6.7m) on for Lindelof in order to facilitate a switch to 4-3-3. The young Englishman played on the right flank of the front three, with Martial pushing out to the left. His impact was almost instant as it headed home, although it was from a set piece that he changed the game. Shaw was the one who put the ball in from the corner, another feather in his Fantasy cap.

But it wasn’t enough to change the course of the result, with Arnautovic managing to break free soon after and make it 3-1. It proved to be another game where Mourinho’s side did not play particularly well over the course of the 90 minutes, and the worrying sign is the fact that the Portuguese manager wasn’t completely prepared to admit that was the case.

“We didn’t make a good start. We didn’t have a good start. The team needs positive feelings. To start losing after five minutes is not what we need. It’s an offside ball. No VAR. The linesman made this mistake. We were punished. The team felt it deeply.” – Jose Mourinho

It is getting to the point now where Man United’s problems off the pitch are starting to play into the hands of their opponents. They can see that something is not right at the club, and Pellegrini confirmed that with some of his post-match words about the absence of Sánchez.

“I was surprised about Alexis Sánchez. That was a relief. They still had decisive players in the final third.” – Manuel Pellegrini

West Ham XI (4-3-3): Fabianski; Masuaku, Diop, Balbuena, Zabaleta; Rice, Noble, Obiang; Anderson (Diangana 90+3′), Arnautovic (Antonio 83′), Yarmolenko (Snodgrass 71′).

Man United XI (3-5-2): De Gea; Lindelof (Rashford 56′), Smalling, McTominay; Shaw, Pogba (Fred 70′), Matic, Fellaini, Young; Martial (Mata 71′), Lukaku.

Which big hitter misses out for you guys if you were wildcarding now?:

    Salah
    Hazard
    Aguero
    Kane

For me, i would not captain Kane until GW15 against SOT, except for next GW.

I am worried about Aguero's minutes around the Christmas period.

Here is who i think are the best captain options between now and January 1st, when the next wildcard appears:

    8- KANE- CAR
    9- AGUERO- BUR
    10- SALAH- CAR
    11- HAZARD- CRY
    12- SALAH- FUL
    13- AGUERO- whu
    14- HAZARD- FUL
    15- KANE- SOT
    16- SALAH- bou
    17- KANE- BUR
    18- AGUERO- CRY
    19-SALAH- NEW
    20- KANE- WOL
    21-KANE- car

I think Kane misses out at the moment, but a swap from Aguero to Kane later down the line is worth it

I like your logic but what about Form? If Kane continues to score from now till gwk 15, just because he might not have the fixtures doesnt mean he shouldn’t be captained

Interesting. Who will you cap next week then. Kuns minutes are a big issue. He was lucky to score yesterday. Imo Salah gw 8 against Hud is a better cap than Aguero

I might take out Kun to Kane for a hit, captain Kane, then WC for GW9 and go for double Liverpool defence. I'm currently 4.9k OR which i am very pleased about but will drop further as all my players have played this GW

Similar rank to me, I have just pressed the button on Aguero to Kane and plan on wildcarding for GW10, just in time to bring in Salah for CAR (H)?

When I WC around GW 15 or so Kane is a no brainer.. GW 9 to 14 he has 4 away games (vs wolves, palace, arsenal, whu all of which will be tough) and the home ones are vs city and Chelsea. Could get a bumper haul this week but spurs don't look convincing.. over 7 weeks I expect the likes of Arnie, mitro to match him on PPG. Let's see though.. could go tits up

      5. AndyCook
          7 years, 3 months ago

You need to think in deltas rather than absolutes, so if you would captain a player one Gameweek but it is marginal then they are not as valuable as if they were the only good option in an otherwise rubbish week. In addition the players still score points when you don’t captain them so I think the general difficulty of the fixture run and their form is still very important. I would have Kane over Salah or Aguero, Aguero will get little in the way of bonus if he gets taken off at 60 mins in nearly all matches

Haz definitely stays. Form, fixtures, price, no CL or managed minutes to deal with.

The others are more unsure. Kane great short term fixtures but tougher medium term and hasnt looked great so far this season, is expensive. A lot depends on Kun's supposed nigly injury.

Planning to wildcard not this week but next. My current plan as it stands is to own neither Kane nor Aguero. Don't think spurs have very attractive fixtures until gw15, and can't see Kane being too highly captained before then either (apart from gw8).

Aguero is a bit more risky with his ownership, but is a 6-8ppg man at moment and is having his minutes managed. I think having 3 mid price forwards may be the way to go with more money in midfield (salah, hazard, mane in my gw9 wildcard team for example).

Yeah Arnie Vardy Mitro is my preferred front 3 from GW9 aswell. I would go for Haz, Mane, Salah in midfield for gw 9 and 10 for sure due to the pool fixtures, but yeah salah could easily become sterling after then if desired. Vardy's fixtures turn bad exactly as Kane's improve in GW15 aswell, so Vardy to Kane funded by Salah or Sterling to KdB/Alli/Eriksen would also be a good way to take advantage of the fixture swings here. My aim as it stands is to arrive in GW15 with 2 free transfers.

              salah hazard rich
              vardy Mitro arnie

trying to squeeze my funds to bring sterling into that but not sure it will be possible, so may just stick with this and keep a decent back 4

          May I ask something?

Why people always want Aguero as captain for favourable City fixtures?

Why not Sterling if u wildcarded.

          Sterling looks good.

Maybe some will say Aguero nailed, City mid cant be trusted but at the moment Sterling looks nailed.

Last year point per match if in correctly remember

          Aguero : 6.7
          Sterking : 6.9

          This season's stat also encouraging.

Total score, Sterling got more as Aguero have injury history .

Why not the list of big hitters like this:-
          1. Mohamad
          2. Sterling
          3. Kane
          4. Hazard

Without penalty, Sterling still can have more points than Aguero. Mohamad (Salah) also doest have penalty duties but still can archieved 303 points last year.

Probably swap Kane in GW 10 after Kun plays Burnley, likely if Man C yet to clear CL group stage, focus might be elsewhere other than the league.

But i wouldn't cap Kane against Wol in GW20, it is a promoted team, but its quality in defence is so much higher.

Any changes here? Have 2FTs and 0.1itb.

        Ederson. 4.0.
        Alonso. Trippiér. Robbo. Doherty. AWB.
Hazard (c). Mané. Rich. Maddison. Fraser.
        Kun. Mitrovic. Wilson.

        Players I want are Kane/Arnie/Sterling.

        Can do:
        A) Kun + Rich -> Arnie + Sterling for free
        B) Kun to Kane and downgrade Robbo/Ederson
        C) Other?

Kuns minutes vastly reduce his appeal. Imo he plays 90 against Hoffenheim and Pool but then against Burnely, the same madness continues. A Kane getting back into form and assured consistently of 80+ minutes is just a better option to me. Also, Salah cap gw8 beats Aguero and Kane for me so it just comes down to ageuro vs burnely 65min or so vs Kane away to West Ham full 90 of which I feel the margin may not be so greaf

        1. MTPockets
            7 years, 3 months ago

Except there's a 2 week break before Burnley and he gets to rest as not called up for Argentina.

But then they have Shakthar away and Spurs away the following week. I fear the same happens against Burnley and them he gets the full 90 in the next 2 games

              1. MTPockets
                  7 years, 3 months ago

And Kane has PSV and Man City the following week. I have no idea what will happen, but Aguero seems to have been managing some sort of minor injury forever yet consistently scoring a lot of goals. But if you're not keen then yeah sell him.

Aguero is a beast. Not taking anything away from him. Still the best player in the league for me but worried about the knock. Kane will always get more or less the full 90 and be rested in the occasional cup game. He looks to be getting back into form bit by bit. All this could prove irrelevant though. Kane could haul against west ham and aguero could do well in limited time against Burnley

                    1. MTPockets
                        7 years, 3 months ago

On a GW8 basis Kane's certainly the better option. Longer term I don't think so in terms of team/price value comparison and factoring in required transfers. But my view's obviously skewed by my own squad setup and reluctance to take a hit or plan for the transfers.

Doubt Aguero will play 90mins in mid-week. He's got a problem with his foot apparently, so his minutes are being managed.

All depends on the result I guess. He most likely plays 90 against Pool and if the game is in the balance, I see him getting extended minutes against Hoffenheim

If I want Kane in for this week and I’m planning to WC in IB, which looks better as a 1 week punt?

              A) Just Kun > Kane (FT)
              B) Kun, Mané > Kane, up to 9.2 (Sané, Ozil, Maddison?) -4
              C) Kun, Mané, Robbo > Kane, Haz, Bennett (-8)

Haven’t really taken any risks so far - only used transfers to fix injuries and hasn’t paid off last few weeks.

              Current team:
              £0.7itb 1FT
              Fab, Foster
              Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, PVA, AWB
              Salah, Mané, Rich, Fraser, Hughes
              Kun, Wilson, Mitro

              Hamer Bennet Gomez Masuaku
              1FT 2m itb

They're both good options. Can see the appeal of Fab over Pat if you already have a Wolves defender (let's be fair, you won't have a WHU one).

Double Wolves saved me this week, but it could be all change another weekend.

                  Auba to Kane for free?

I love the guy and back him fully to score around 25 goals this season but right now even Lacazette looks like a better option than him. I know that eventually he'll come good and it could be his turn to run riot against Fulham. I just feel like he's not doing enough to justify his price and I should move on.

                    A. aguero + mane + mendy > kane + hazard + bennet -4
                    B. zaha + mane + mendy > kane + richalison + jonny/dunk -4
(i held mendy so i could downgrade this week as i didn't fancy trippier with barca rotation)

                    What should I do here?

                    Hennessey Hamer
                    Alonso Robbin Trippier AWB Bennett
                    Hazard Mane Fraser Milner Hojberg
                    Aguero Lacazette Mitro

                    A) Mane & Laca -> Maddison & Kane (0.5 ITB) -4

                    B) Milner & Laca -> Maddison & Arnue (1.8 ITB) -4

                    C) do nothing

Basically I want Maddison in my team - reckon I should lose Mane for it to get Kane? Or keep Mane and get Arnie > Kane

                    Thoughts welcome!

No FT. Is a -4 worth it to get Kane in for Aguero and then WC next week. Can keep Trippier for CAR then

                    Fabianski, Stekelenburg
                    Mendy, Alonso, Robertson, AWB, Peltier
Hazard, Mane, Maddison, B. Silva, Billing
                    Aguero, Mitrovic, Ings

I'm doing Aguero to Kane for a hit. It seems like the logical thing to do.

hard call will want agure long term normally hitting him out sounds bad, but not having kane is also scary. seeing as you have your whildcard i say go for it

I was commited to WC after next gw but considering very few changes needed I am postponing to gw10/11. Your team is good to go. Just hope City vs Liv is high scoring as expected and C hazarad/salah

H2H... could be close but i think my opponent will snatch it:

him: Etherington (BUR), WanBis (bou) + 5pts
me: Fraser (CRY), Pva & Zaha (bou)

West Ham turned a corner or Man United abysmal? Was really keen on getting Knockaert ahead of this GW but now I don’t know.
