Captains

Captain Sensible – Spurs and Man City the focus in Gameweek 17

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City appear to be the two sides at the centre of this week’s captaincy debate.

Both clubs have favourable fixtures in Gameweek 17 as well as some interest options for the armband.

As usual, we are here to compare the players themselves, their clubs, their opposition in order to work out which player should be our captain this weekend.

Captain Poll

Harry Kane (£12.6m) is our runaway poll leader for Gameweek 17 as Tottenham prepare to host Sean Dyche’s struggling Burnley side. He tops the pile with the backing of 46% of the vote, despite his no-show at Leicester in Gameweek 16 and an intense outing at Barcelona midweek. We are sure that the bulk of his support is chiefly influenced by opponents Burnley, who we will assess later in the article. That and the fact that Kane has four goals and two assists in his last five Premier League starts.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) is proving the second-most popular captain choice this week with 17% in the poll. That makes him the most fashionable Manchester City option ahead of their meeting with Everton on Saturday lunch-time. Sterling has four goals and five assists in the last seven Gameweeks but hasn’t registered attacking returns for the last two.

Up next is last week’s poll winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) who comes in with 10% backing with Arsenal travelling to Southampton this week. The Saints are still in a transitional period with new manager Ralph Hasenhuttle fresh in his role and the Gunners, given their attacking form, are expected by many to record a comfortable win at St Mary’s Stadium. Aubameyang has registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The fact he was rested for Thursday night’s Europa League match indicates he should get an eighth successive Premier League start on Sunday afternoon.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) looks to be the best of the rest heading into Gameweek 17 with a backing of 4.56%. Chelsea travel to Brighton this weekend, where they emerged 4-0 winners last season. The Belgian has four assists in his last three matches but is without a goal of his own since Gameweek 8.

Despite last week’s hat-trick, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains in the differential section of another captain poll. Ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Manchester United, just 3.93% of our voters are confident enough to hand the Egyptian the armband. That could prove a sensible decision considering that Salah has never scored or assisted against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Gameweek 17’s potentially powerful alternative Son Heung-min (£8.5m) sits just behind the Liverpool man on 3.44%. The fact that such a small number are backing him this week, those putting the armband on him may feel more confident in doing so, as the effect could be bigger.

The effect of Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy means that, despite Manchester City being at home, Sterling is the only of their options above 3% backing in this poll. Leroy Sané (£9.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) are the next most popular but have been chosen by 2.03% and 1.61% of voters respectively.

There's no better option than going with your gut.

I'd captain Hazard from the three too.

Sterling is tempting but probably Hazard because he's sure to start.

    Robbo, Alonso, Doherty, AWB, Dignes
    Salah, Sterling, Fraser, Rich, 4.5m
    Auba, Wilson, Kamara

    1.3m ITB and 2FT

    a. Fraser, Alonso > Son, Bellerin (or other 5.6m, just missed out on Luiz price rise!)

    b. Hold Alonso and do Wilson, Rich > Son, Chich

c Wilson, Rich > Jiminez, Alli

So turns out Dubravka injured his leg as a child when he was chopping wood with an axe.

Can't think of a more hard-core footballer's injury than that. Beats Rio Ferdinand's injured knee from putting his leg on a coffee table 😀

Currently looking at a double hit for the below - what do you think?

Balbuena - Robbo - Doherty - Wan Bissaka
    Salah - Hazard - Richarlison - Kenedy*
    Aubemayang - Jiminez

Hennessey - Knockaert* - TAA*- Arnie*

    TAA - Kolasinac
    Knockaert - Son
    Kenedy - Felipe Anderson

I've had one of those all season. Unlikely many could say they've had 2 or 3. He's asking about 3 players. Short term A might be better.

The question wasn't time specific and simply stated 3 squad players against another. Therefore my answer is valid, as is yours.

I was triple with Arnie, Anderson and Antonio. Currently with Snoddy, Anderson and Antonio. Would happily switc to Snoddy, Anderson and Chica, but don't want to take the gihit to make it happen. Personally think "too much", "cover" and "eggs in basket" thinking is heavily flawed.

Kane is most heavily owned so surely safety pick for captaincy if top end of ML. VC on Sterling or Son and reverse if chasing. I don't like putting C on players who may get minutes managed.

Both are a worry. I can't imagine Son will be rotated given he was taken off at 70ish. If he played the full 90 then maybe?

Martial, I think could probably play given Jose's comments about how many are injured right now...

Did Pereira to DLuiz. Gonna try and move Balbuena out next week so I can swap Joselu to Hernandez. Thoughts?

Anyone looking at Arsenal mids other than Torreira or just too much rotation risks there?

    a) TAA to Kola

    b) Laca+TAA to Chica+Luiz/Robbo for a hit.

    Thanks.

Chances of Tripper playing against Burnley?

Think he does damage on set pieces and good chance of a clean sheet if he's fit.

He's out. Saw it somewhere but can't remember where I read it.

    Hi All

    My team is...

    Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, TAA
Sterling, Hazard, Sane, F Anderson, Fraser
    Abamajang

    Bench: Success, Ings, Dunk

    Nothing in the bank

    With TAA thinking...
    A) TAA - Kolo
    B) TAA - Holebas - then have just enough to switch Dunk to Digne
    C) Do nothing (play Success)
    D) Something Else..

Leaning towards B because i thought Holebas might do well (Cardiff at home) then west ham). then after than can use Digne vs Burnley. They are all quite attacking on set pieces? Gives me allot of good options to cover rests/injuries?

Does anyone still rate Holebas as an option, is he still on corners etc? or am i overthinking and should just go Kolo?

    Thanks

West Ham have scored three, in their last three, are in a pretty rich vein of form and have nice fixtures upcoming. I wouldn't bank on that clean sheet from him.

How do you think Arsenal will line up on Sunday? Do you agree with the Team News selection?

    Leno
    Bellerin Koscielny Monreal Kolasinac
    Torreira Xhaka Guedouzi
    Mkhitaryan Aubameyang Iwobi

      Monreal CB !? 😀

Well he has frequently played as LCB in a back 3. Their only other options are Xhaka, Jenkinson and Lichtsteiner

holding is injured, koscielny is not ready, sokratis is one of the worst cb's I've seen with the ball. not much of a choice there.

Yes - but could see Ramsey and Sokratis instead of Guendouzi and Monreal.

        * Forgot Sokratis is banned. So yes other than Ramsey instead of Guendouzi

Fair. I think there's a strong possibility that Ramsey or Ozil will start, though could easily see them coming on at halftime haha. Not sure on Ramsey's fitness, so Id actually bet on Ozil, since Qarabag was basically just a training match (no offence, Qarabag fans)

Sokratis won’t be playing when he’s suspended.

I think Laca and Auba will both start. That’s the main thing.

Are you the same guy who thought Iwobi #10 last week on my obligatory Arsenal post? Not convinced myself. Not yet anyway, especially while Mkhi, Ozil and Ramsey are around.

It does find a way to slot Iwobi, Mkhi and Lacazette into one team, but I sense that it's wishful thinking. Do you own him Lacazette? 😀

I feel like it's more likely Iwobi is dropped to fit Lacazette in unless Emery uses two strikers

Another way would be to put Aubameyang on the right with Iwobi on the left, but fo some reason we haven't seen Auba play there at Arsenal.

Could be a back 3 of lichsteiner, Kos and monreal

True. I posted below considering the possibility of Jenkinson, Kos and Monreal, but Lichtsteiner a possibility too. I'd say it depends on the fitness of attackers, Ozil, Ramsey and Lacazette, but you'd have thought the Emery has his best plan in mind already.

For this game, I think it could be broken down into the following chance of starting:

      Nailed:
      Leno, Bellerin, Aubameyang, Torreira

      Practically nailed:
      Monreal, Kolasinac, Xhaka, Guendouzi

      Good chance:
      Mkhitaryan, Iwobi, Lacazette, Ramsey, Ozil

      Weak but certainly not impossible:
      Jenkinson

Instead of an extra midfielder, perhaps Emery will trust in the system and play:

      Jenkinson/Xhaka, Koscielny, Monreal
      Bellerin, Torreira, Douzi/Xhaka, Kolasinac
      Mkhi/Ozil, Auba/Laca, Iwobi/Laca

Or another variation with 3 CBs
