Salah becoming difference maker among top 10k managers

The new Fantasy Premier League template among the top 10,000 managers appears to be suffering at the hands of the previous one, especially as Mohamed Salah delivered once again on Friday night.

Recent Gameweeks have seen a shuffling of the most selected players, many who have been steadily performing since the beginning of the season.

There had been notable shifts of top 10k ownership for big hitters such as Salah and Eden Hazard, as well as expensive defenders like Marcos Alonso and Andrew Robertson.

The new template largely preferred other emerging options like Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Harry Kane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, with Salah and Hazard hitting form and Kane and Aubameyang struggling to live up to their value, it seems like the old template is fighting its way back.

Comparing the top 10k ownership statistics of last gameweek to the current one, we find the following statistics:

PlayerGameweek 17 Top 10k OwnershipGameweek 18 Top 10k Ownership
Salah58.77%48.14%
Hazard43.19%59.07%
Sterling50.66%55.04%
Kane61.41%57.95%
Aubameyang37.11%42.89%
Sane28.52%41.74%

Numbers suggest that managers have been shipping Salah, Kane and Aubameyang and putting more faith into Manchester City assets and Hazard. As Salah punished his sellers again this week, it remains to see whether Kane and Aubameyang will follow his lead.

This back and forth shifting of assets leaves the most selected team this week looking like the following:

As the figure shows, Salah drops back to the fifth most owned midfielder despite recently scoring a hat-trick, and registering a goal and an assist against Wolves.

Hazard rises to second and Sterling settles at fourth. Meanwhile, Kane is still the most-owned forward with Aubameyang dropping to the fourth place.

The decline of managers’ faith in the new template of Kane and Aubameyang, plus the old pick of Salah, also manifests itself in the captaincy percentages this week.

Although the three of them are face relatively decent fixtures this week (Everton, Burnley and Wolves respectively), none of them is captained by more than 8% of the top 10k.

On the contrary, managers opted for Sterling (44.2%), Hazard (20.37%) and Sane (15.61%) for the armband.

These captaincy statistics ensure that, for the first time in many weeks, no player has an effective ownership of more than 100%, with Sterling the best at 99.34%.

This is good news for the game as this kind of splitting between managers is what allows for significant rank jumps, if you are correct with your captaincy choice.

Really hoping Man Utd do a Leicester or Hazard and instantly turn form around when the old manager they want shot of finally leaves... sold Salah, Richarlison and Jiménez for Sané, Pogba and Rashford for -4.

Regret selling Salah already... and wouldn’t mind Richarlison and Jiménez back for GW19... I feel like I’ve made a catastrophic error and it’s going to bite me hard!

Strange moves really. Most players might take hits to get in the ones you replaced. Hoping it works out for you tho as a united fan myself

Correct point made upthread in the midfielder v striker convo by KLAREN that I think deserves its own post.

"The strikers are so disadvantaged in points compared to midfielders that the premium midfielders have to really underperform for strikers to outperform them and such a discrepancy in performance seems unlikely atm."

This exactly. There's going to have to be a bit of a rethink at FPL

Perhaps strikers should get an extra point for assists. Doesn't this make sense in the same way that MFs get an extra point for scoring goals

lose the mid cleanie point. how can Salah deserve that as effectively a striker?

Good shout, but then we get into the realms of defensive mids keeping a clean sheet point.

Ultimately it all simply comes down to price point, not the scoring system - change one and you affect the other :)9

Yeah that could work. Maybe players like torreira who do affect whether their team gets a cs can make up the lost points in bps with more emphasis on tackles, blocks, interceptions, etc.

What about Sane, Haz, Sterling etc.? They don’t directly affect whether their team gets a cs but still get the pts

I think with strikers the idea is that their output tends to be more predictable which is useful as a captain option and that the bonus point system means when they do score they are more likely to get bonus than a midfielder who scores.

Aubemeyang goes from 37pc ownership in week 17 to 43pc ownership in week 18, yet the author somehow concludes that he is being "shipped" by managers. How does a 6pc ownership rise equate to a player being shipped out?

They didn't ship him out though, they didn't own him and thats why they moved into top10K

I'm seeing Auba as having a net transfer of -53,000 between GW's 17 and 18.

No, he isn't. He states: "Numbers suggest that managers have been shipping Salah, Kane and Aubameyang." The numbers referred to are in the table above his comment, the top 10,000 between weeks 17 and 18. That table flatly contradicts his suggestion. Overall net transfers of Aubameyang may currently be showing sales, but that is not the point that he is making.

It’s confusing because the top 10k are not the same people week on week so teams with high scoring players one week will be more represented the next week!

Also depends which 10K you are referring to. The one as the deadline passes or the Live one when GW is in duration and of course changes when GW is finalised.

Am I crazy for considering Lindelof/Shaw and Mata in for TAA and Fraser? This is obviously predicated on today's lineup and result, but say United win comfortably, is it a decent set of transfers considering United's amazing run of fixtures until March?

good article, interesting because IM FINALLY IN THAT TOP 10K!!!!! Question though, my rise to the top 10k has been because of Hazard and Salah so why is the template shifting? Should we even be talking about templates?
