Why Wan-Bissaka got maximum bonus as Watford bust clean sheet

Watford crashed another clean sheet party in Gameweek 22 as their away form continues to frustrate Fantasy Premier League managers.

However, that did not stop everybody’s favourite Crystal Palace defender from picking up bonus points.

How that happened is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Watford

Goals: Craig Cathcart (£4.5m), Tom Cleverley (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Cathcart

Assists: Jose Holebas (£4.8m)

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) was the talk of the Fantasy community on Saturday after he picked up maximum bonus in Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Watford. The young right-back managed that feat despite not being involved in a goal or keeping a clean sheet. That just goes to show the power of his Fantasy appeal, with more hauls expected from him in future as his style of play is favoured by the Bonus Points System.

Interestingly, it appears it was more than just Wan-Bissaka’s defensive work that earned him additional points against the Hornets. While he was joint-top for tackles, three players were ahead of him for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI). Where he seems to have performed best was pass completion, coming joint-second there, and playing more open-play crosses than any other player. It must also be said that Wan-Bissaka was also helped to three bonus by the fact that one of Watford’s goal-scorers had already registered and own-goal, while the other was only on the pitch for 22 minutes.

It was a rare week where the majority of his owners made the conscious effort en masse to use him in their starting line-ups. After all, Crystal Palace came into Saturday’s match with the third-best home defensive record in the division, only Chelsea and Liverpool conceding fewer than them in front of their own fans. However, Watford proved to be the coupon busters away from home once again as they scored twice.

Considering that in the four road matches prior to Gameweek 22 Watford were in the top three for big chances created, perhaps it is not too shocking that the Hornets were able to find a breakthrough. In fact, their opening goal should really have been much sooner than it did, as they hit the post twice in the opening minutes. Instead, it came in the 67th minute, perhaps after some managers had logged in and seen a clean sheet added for Wan-Bissaka and his Palace defensive colleagues.

It was an afternoon of frustration for owners of Eagles goalkeeper Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) as he was substituted with a muscle injury just short of half-time. The Spaniard had picked up plenty of transfer interest in recent weeks having made five consecutive starts between Gameweeks 17 and 21 at a budget price. Those who signed him for Gameweek 22 watched on in dismay as he was forced from the field, now in need of further assessment, as Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) replaced him. A possible absence for Guaita could mean a slight reduction in Palace’s clean sheet potential. This season with him in goal, the Eagles have conceded a goal every 164.7 minutes, compared to every 59.4 minutes with Hennessey between the sticks.

“We don’t know yet but it’s a muscle injury to his calf and will have to be assessed. It was obviously bad enough that he couldn’t continue. How bad an injury it is we won’t know until he’s had the scan. It’s a definite muscle injury, it wasn’t cramp or a kick.” – Roy Hodgson

It was another match in which Hodgson avoided using his favoured 4-4-2 formation, opting for the 4-3-3 set-up which helped Palace win 2-0 at Molineux in Gameweek 21. Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), and Andros Townsend (£5.8m), flanking Jordan Ayew (£5.7m), who was making his second start in a row. However, playing a front three did not aid Crystal Palace’s unenviable goal-scoring record at home, which still only stands at six in 11 matches, although Zaha was the match’s top shooter in the peanlty box. The Eagles found the net against Watford courtesy of Abdoulaye Doucouré (£5.9m), whose attempted clearance cannoned into the net off an unwitting Craig Cathcart (£4.5m).

“If you want to win games you need to take the chances that come your way. As far as Watford are concerned they must be feeling quite comfortable in that respect. They had a chance early on which hit the post twice and another chance which was cleared off the line and they had chances to score their two goals. We perhaps weren’t as effective. We also had our chances but we could only score one goal. That’s what football is basically, there aren’t many games this year where I’ve come off the field thinking ‘well we were outplayed there, beaten there, didn’t deserve to win, the opponents were clearly much better than us’.” – Roy Hodgson

With those issues scoring goals, Hodgson admitted post-match his scouting team are always on the lookout for players that can add more firepower to the Palace squad. However, he did explain that he is hoping the recent return of Connor Wickham (£4.9m) and Christian Benteke (£6.3m) can help the situation. The former has been back in the fold since Gameweek 19, although is yet to start, while Benteke made his first appearance since Gameweek 4 coming on as a 78-minute substitute against Watford.

“I’m hoping that the return of Benteke and the return of Connor Wickham might give me a few more options than I’ve had over the last year and a bit.” – Roy Hodgson

As already mentioned, Watford had compared well to the rest of the league for attacking performances away from home recently. The win at Selhurst Park means they have picked up 16 points on their travels this season. While that happens to be the same number they have earned at Vicarage Road, it’s the seventh-best road total in the Premier League, compared to 11th from home matches. The fact that the Hornets are proving one of the better away sides this year might urge caution for Fantasy managers looking to start Spurs, Brighton and Cardiff defensive assets against them between now and Gameweek 27.

José Holebas (£4.8m) was the key Fantasy asset to deliver for Watford as he picked up an assist for Cathcart’s equaliser, still on the corners for the Hornets. It was the Greek’s third attacking return in six matches, also earning him two bonus points. Meanwhile, centre-back Cathcart’s goal was his first since Gameweek 4.

“Cathcart is one of the players with the most minutes in the league,” said Gracia. “I trust him. He always shows a very good level, a good commitment and is a very important player for me. I know he scored an own goal, but after that he was able to score from a corner kick.” – Javi Gracia

Ken Sema (£4.6m) had to replace Will Hughes (£4.9m) in the first half after he took a fierce shot to the face. The Swedish substitute was then replaced in the 68th minute after picking up a booking because Gracia feared he would collect a second and be sent off. It was a bold decision, but one that paid off as it allowed Cleverley to come on and get the winning goal.

“It wasn’t an easy decision but in that moment I thought I had to do it. I am very sorry as I don’t like to do it, but I had to do it. It was tough. In that moment I looked for the way to balance the midfield. With Gerard playing on the right, we needed to be more aggressive in that moment.” – Javi Gracia

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita (Hennessey 45′); van Aanholt, Sakho, Tomkins, Wan-Bissaka; McArthur (Benteke 78′), Milivojevic, Kouyaté; Zaha, Ayew (Schlupp 83′), Townsend.

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster; Holebas, Cathcart, Mariappa, Kiko Femenía; Pereyra (Masina 90+3′), Capoue, Doucouré, Hughes (Sema 19′ | Cleverley 68′); Deeney, Deulofeu.

A)TAA to Doherty for a hit
    B)Kane to Aguero/Auba/Jimenez for a hit
If I do one of these moves I have to play 1 of AWB/Puncheon, If I do both I can bench both but -8.
If I don't do any move I have to play both AWB and Puncheon.

I'd say so for now, they are the only two currently fit senior defenders, they will need to them keep the stability. CL rotation might be an issue but they don't have the worry of any domestic cups. I'd be happy with either, Robbo has been in every one of my teams across different formats since week 1, he's going nowhere!

As mentioned by many on site and many new outlets, Alexander-Arnold looks like he could be set to be out for a month.

What are the FPL, PL, and CL implications of this?

How big a loss is it for Liverpool's title and CL hopes? Do you think it means more security for the other starters, like Robertson, as Klopp might want to have more of his ideal XI playing?

Does TAA's absence make you want Liverpool defence less? Is Firmino more of an option for those who had been looking at double defence?
And for those of us who have TAA: who are you looking to replace him with?

I'll have to ride it out this GW and hope Schindler or AWB don't get minus points as already committed to bringing in Rashford & Salah for a hit. By next GW maybe one of Gomez/Matip/Lovren will be an option again?

Not a massive issue for Liverpool IMO. They'll play Milner-Fabinho-VVD-Robertson. That is still a solid defence. Lovren, Matip and Gomez will be back soon so they can survive.

Going out of the FA Cup may just have helped them.....

Not enough funds to get other Pool def and yes, their def looks shaky now without TAA, Gomez and Lovren.
I'm probably taking hit to get Lindelof or Shaw - may payoff this week already.

Lovren good lord better off without him. Did you watch the Brighton game Fabinho was outstanding at CB and a big upgrade on him. TAA is replaceable by Milner not a big dropoff so LFC are actually better off defensively than over the Xmas break with Lovren. Unless ofcourse another injury strikes.

Milner to slot in at right back this weekend then.

I’ll use the cash freed up by the Kane sale (assuming he’s out) to go TAA ➡️ Robertson.

Like u Space Cadete Alonso to TAA. TAA turned his ankle in warm up at Brighton, but played 90 minutes. Last night I couldn’t find any update on him. Now media saying knee injury.
Ive slapped myself around my face a few times for making aggressive transfer, which has back fired. Soon as Clyne was sent out on loan, knew this would happen.

At least its a straight swap for Klopp to Clyne.......oh wait.

In all seriousness, no implications to Liverpool in the PL really. He has missed loads of games this season and they've been fine without him in those. Next 2 games are at home to sides who can't attack so they'll be fine defensively, and after those they will have players returning from injury anyway.

No CL implications either - he will return before the CL starts again.

for FPL, the defence will continue to be good. If you want a secure way in, get VVD or Allison. Or alternatively look elsewhere, theres plenty of options for similar price: Digne, Doherty, AWB, Pereira, Shaw, Lindelof, Luiz, Bednarek, Duffy. some of these would work as rotation options too.

The biggest impact could be on Salah if Milner plays there as a stop gap and takes penalties. This has been the only way Salah has scored recently!

He would have still got assists on the pens. Salah is due he hadn't a penalty called on him in the PL for a year which is absurd considering how talented and often he's in the box.

From a Liverpool perspective hopefully the damage won't be too great as Gomez and Matip are nearing returns and Milner can fill in if we are desperate.

Should make Robbo even more of an outlet to be honest so he could become even more involved than usual if there's a less attacking full back on the other side...

In terms of replacements I'm torn between digne and like Shaw. Digne seems the obvious choice as his attacking returns and bonus potential should mask the lack of clean sheet returns. Shaw could also do well especially with 3 clean sheets in a row for United recently.

Darrrr now I regret selling Alonso for Robertson last night to beat the non-existent Alsono price drop. Hopefully this will make Robertson more attacking, but that could be clutching at straws.

My first thought for a replacement is Jonny. Aside from Digne and Doherty, who I already own, he strikes me as the best value alternative under 5.0. Great, consistent fixtures, which means he doesn't need rotating so a double up with Doherty isn't a problem (nor a triple-up with Pat, in my case).

You’ll soon be doing as bad as me if you keep making such questionable decisions. I thought it had been established that they have a useless defence, and Doherty was the only viable choice due to attaching returns?

                https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19660686

I don't have to use double defenders every week, and Jonny is only 4.3. I prefer to think of them as individual playing cards in this game. Belonging to the same team is only relevant to rotation. Likewise, the keeper is an entirelydifferent position, and I cannot play a Digne card to cover that position, for example. Therefore, who cares that he has an Orange shirt? (Well, actually it's blue, so he's even more different! 😆 )

One further related tidbit is that I rose from 186,432 to 5,291 in 2 GWs the last time I "tripled" on Wolves defence. Not saying it'll happen again, but I think it's relevant to establish that doubles and triples can go either way, and there's no implicit bias toward success or failure, so there's no need to use a cautious approach.

By whoever you were arguing with about it, TGNC I think. It’s true that they hardly ever keep clean sheets and Pat barely manages a save point. But it could possibly work for this easy run.

Doesn't sound like it's established if it's just one guy saying "the fact is that Wolves have 1 clean sheet in 11 attempts" and claiming that people don't buy Doherty for defensive returns. Your argument here is the same as his, that "everybody knows" already. 😆

                    https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19662843

People aren't really buying Doherty much anymore (-52% on FPLStats and falling), surely in part BECAUSE of the poor output in CSs for the price (which also equals lower FPL points output than expected), but thankfully there is still hope for CSs in the future, which means some people will still see value in him at his current price as well as Jonny at only 4.3, who can also get attacking returns. Nothing has established that Wolves defenders will not be good value in the future.

I'm just countering your wild simplifications. I didn't realise your comments were supposed to be read in a vacuum and taken as Gospel 😉

Simple things like saying "they hardly ever keep clean sheets" rather than "they have hardly ever kept clean sheets" reveal an inner bias which I have to counter if the words have been used to argue against me.

CSs are highly variable big events which can't be used to predict CSs very well, especially when there is much more power in underlying numbers. You could have said "Man City always keep CSs" after their 6 in a row and then said "Man City never keep clean sheets" in their following run of 8 without a cleanie. Pretty useless stuff imo 😛

I'm only messing too! Easy to say that 😀 Good luck to you too

Having just done Alonso to TAA for the double clean sheet at Brighton I'm inclined to keep him until he's back. I have Bednarek and The Biscuit who have decent fixtures next 4 and Trent is fantastic value so would rather not do an in out over next month and waste 2 transfers.

Think Pool defence will be fine given the fixtures and Milners reliability.

Removed TAA for Bednarek who at 3.9 becomes a useful enabler esp as I bought AWB for 4.0.

Given that I have VVD, Doherty, Digne with AWB, I always have three useful defensive options so getting the uber cheap Bednarek makes sense as I am well covered.

VVD will play every game so I only need two other options without playing Bednarek.

Presumably, most will be following this thinking.
