Title-chasers expected to headline Gameweek 38 captaincy debate

The title-chasing players at Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to be the front-runners for the final captain debate of the season.

The 2018/19 campaign comes to a close with Gameweek 38 on Sunday afternoon, with the destiny of the Premier League trophy virtually the only thing left to be decided.

Second-placed Liverpool have been a devastating attacking force at Anfield this year, which should see some interest in options such as Sadio Mané (£10.2m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m).

The Senegalese international may have an advantage given that he has a much more reliable record at home over a longer period, scoring 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, he is currently completely fit while Salah has been placed in concussion protocol.

Jurgen Klopp has said that at this stage he is confident the Egyptian will play a part in Gameweek 38, but he will have missed training for most of the week – so it will be interesting to see how much of a party his yellow flag plays in the captain poll.

The vote is now live on our website and can be participated in either in the embedded section at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, Manchester City face an appealing trip to Brighton on Sunday, knowing that a win will secure a second consecutive Premier League title.

The Seagulls have conceded nine goals in their last four at home, while Manchester City have scored at least twice in each of their last four on the road.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) may prove to be the most popular of the Citizens options given he has attacking returns in two of his last three away trips.

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), who recorded his first blank in a home Premier League start this season on Monday night, will also be considered. He has two goals in his last four on the road as well.

However, with Manchester City’s attack slowing down in favour of their defensive solidity, maybe Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) will prove the most popular candidate.

Six clean sheets in his last seven Premier League outings has helped the centre-back become a seriously reliable option, especially with two attacking returns thrown in for good measure.

In fact, since the turn of the year, Laporte has posted a better points-per-game (6.79) than both Sterling (6.69) and Aguero (6.44).

Whether Liverpool defensive assets are strongly considered may depend on what Fantasy managers believe they can expect from Wolves’ attackers.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.0m) has been particularly effective against the top six this season although Wolves have not been in such impressive form away from Molineux in recent months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) has been a hugely exciting option in recent weeks, stringing together consecutive scores of eight, 11, 10 and 10 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) has two attacking returns in that time, as well as benefitting from Liverpool’s three clean sheets.

The most reliable of them all from a long-term perspective this season has been Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), who assisted twice in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

However, with mini-leagues and overall ranking now the main focus of most managers, it is possible that we may see some bespoke captaincy decisions.

Those looking for differentials on the main players may have to roll the dice given the typically unpredictable nature of Gameweek 38.

Despite a blank against Manchester City on Monday night, Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) still has five goals and an assist in his last four home matches.

Coming to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season are Chelsea, who have wrapped up Champions League qualification and are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 20.

Huddersfield have been poor on their travels too with 15 goals conceded in their last four away matches.

That may cause some to consider their Southampton options for Gameweek 38, Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) the most likely.

He may have been rested for the trip to West Ham, but given the impact he made when he took to the pitch, he should return to the side on Sunday.

Crucially, Redmond has attacking returns in each of his last three home matches against teams outside the top six.

With that logic I should be playing gray over Jiménez/jota!

          Hopefully the pressers reveal something.

    Which option?

    A) Son to Bilva
    B) Jimenez to max. 7.3 mill. forward (Wilson, Rondon, Zaha, Rashford, Mitrovic etc.) and play Højbjerg for Son
    C) Both for -4

Last transfers of the season ... out go Kolasinac, Son and Firmino (for a -4) ... but who should come in?

    A) Shaw, Salah and Long
    B) Robertson, Hazard, Long
    C) Shaw, Redmond, Aubameyang
    D) Robertson, Redmond, Aubameyang
    E) Robertson, Redmond, Vardy
    F) Lindelof, Hazard, Rashford

Feel free to suggest other combinations 🙂

You really think Shaw will out score Robertson this week? Liverpool's defence has been so solid this season and they won't want to give anything away if they are going for the title.

My preference out of those would be A or E.

Hazard's away form is much less impressive

I'd forgotten about Hazard's poor away form ... plus he might have one eye on a move to Real Madrid and not bother to perform. I think I will rule out B & F on that basis. Thanks for the reminder.

Haz stat wise was by far the best performer this week. I wouldn’t rule out a return.

True he turned it on for his last ever home game in front of the Chelsea fans but we know how quickly he can turn it off. Also maybe saved for the Europa League final (should Chelsea get there) and Chelsea have already made the top 4.

    Foster
    Robbo VVD Laporte Shaw
    Pognba Mane Sterling
    Aguero Auba Rondon

    Tavers Valery Elliott Holland

Look good? FH-team 0itb. I decided on Auba and Aguero as both have 20 goals this season and they should be hungry for the boot. Mane on 20 gls too.

      Wouldn't bother with Pogba personally.

Would prefer 352 or 343 given that GW38 has higher average goals per game.

I guess to be fair that defence is pretty solid, if you're sure you fancy Liverpool for a CS.

Don't fancy any midfielders.. Maybe Townsend or Redmond.. slim pickings.

            I quite like Redmond personally.
VVD/Robbo to TAA and Pogba to Redmond gives you 4 (?) million ITB and is an upgrade in my opinion.

But to be fair the team is good, and if you're comfortable enough with it to defend it then you're probably set.

On FH I'd probably want Vardy too (10 goals and 2 assists in his last 10 games) . Do you really need two Liverpool defenders?

I've had the double Liv def since the beginning. They've bailed me out more often than not.

    De Gea
    Cathcart VVD Bednarek
    Salah Son Babel Mane
    Lacazette Jimenèz Wilson

    Gunn Richarlison Doherty Dunk

    0.7 ITB & 1 FT

    Which option looks better?
    A Son > Eriksen
    B Son & Jimenez > Alli & Rashford -4
    C Richarlison & Jimenez > B Silva & Mitrovic -4
    D Son & Richarlison > Pogba & Martial -4

I've spent the last few days trying to figure out what to do with Son, but now I'm wondering if the best thing to do is just to bench him in favor of getting a better defender for the last GW. Currently have Bednarek, TAA, Doherty, Duffy, Dunk. I'm not thrilled about playing Doherty against Liverpool, but it seems a better bet than Duffy. On the other hand, wouldn't I rather have Lindelhof or Wan-B or even Dummett?

Help Needed Fellas!!! Chasing my league opponent by 1 point.

    My Team:
    Foster
    TAA Robertson PVA
    Sterling Eriksen Son Fraser Pogba
    Firmino Jiminez
    Subs: King Doherty Duffy

    Opponents team:
    Leno
    VVD Laporte Lindaloef
    Sterling Eriksen Bilva Deloufou Mane
    Lacazette Rashford

I am thinking doing Firmino + Son > Aguero(C) + Redmond. Cant see anyone else than Aguero to be scoring 2 or more goals. Thoughts?

    Thoughts on these moves?

Son, Jota and Jiminez to Babel, Aguero and bench fodder (MvTominay) for -4

Assuming Firmino is fit leaves me with:

    Ederson
    Monreal, Lindleof, VVD
    Sterling, Pogba, Manè, Babel
    Aguero, Firmino

    Foster, Llorente, McTom, Lascelles

Gents - I need your help.

I’m 13 points behind my rival despite leading the swine all season. One game left and they have a BB still to play although their bench is dire.

    My team is:
    Ederson
TAA Bednarek Luiz (rice & Doherty)
    Deulofeu - Salah - sterling-redmond ( moura)
    Aguero - long - perez

Do I spend points I don’t have to improve the team?

    And
Who do I captain to claw my way back?
